Normally Southland is relied upon to send bailage North but we need it ourselves too.Last year we had a good balance of rain vs sunshine.A steady several inches each week on average and grass coming out our ears. This year we are as dry as everyone else but the milk production for the province still nearly the same as last year.I'm guessing it'll drop like a stone soon if the rain doesn't come
Hi Andrew hope u got some of that awesome rain that they had in taranaki we don’t have that problem we just have boris Johnson ..so enjoying ur videos thanks for posting
If got neighbours with a couple of sheep see if you can grab their wool that shearer doesn't want and put around the young tree's keeps moisture in ground so don't need to water much 🙂 Or ask around for a bale of old moldy hay but that breaks down faster, wool takes couple of year's and by that stage tree's mature enough.
We all farm differently it is great to see how the other half lives .I well remember 18 and lack of rain here there is a good poem "rain from no where" you remember the important thing .I know you are used to dry weather
Andrew if you could get some old woodchip and put a layer around all your trees itll help hugely to retain the moisture in the soil between waterings 👍😊
@@TheOnceADayFarmer perfect just make sure theres no heat in it and that it dosent touch the actual bark in the trees about 50mm is ideal. Itll also help suppress weeds around them. 👍👍
Hi Andrew, really enjoy your videos, we have a similar dairy farm to yours here in Kentucky USA, although smaller, we are dealing with ice, a little snow and worst is the mud, always a challenge with cows on the outside, hope you get rain soon.
Yes, they do, we mostly calve in March and April, our spring, so in winter cows are late lactation or dry, so not quite as bad as it would be with cows at peak.
Hi Andrew we’ve just started to calve here in Co Down and it’s bloody freezing your video reminds me of last year’s drought here when we had to feed cows in June for the first time ever
I have some good third cut hay you could have but the freight would be rough!!! LOL It sucks having livestock in dry weather. Always worrying about feed for tomorrow.
Feeding cattle during the summer, don't think I could ever get used to that. Only time I seen it in the UK is when they are robot milked and are fed fresh cut grass
She’s dry now alright. Getting some big cracks in the ground and heard the crickets for the first time last night. So we’ve had 3mm in 50 days in ngahinapouri
Yeah nice vid Andrew We’re of the same thinking as you re just looking after BCS not litres during the dry. Over here in South Gippsland there is plenty of feed available to buy in but quality ain’t great so per mj it still just seems to be another bill Each to their own I guess but hey I’m with you guys👍
@@TheOnceADayFarmer I reckon you chase coin or keep things constant then enjoy good times. With that attitude we don’t seem to have many bad times. That is what I have experienced anyway but again each to their own
We’re also lucky that growth rates on grass is still 15kgs/dm/day going into Feb so are not feeding heaps but cost of N is a factor to grow it @ 54 kgs urea/ha to grow that with urea being $1092 + gst spread
Hey Andrew we have 4 hustler chain bale feeders best feeders ever made some blokes here are feeding 8 bales or more dayly if it makes you feel any better 😂
In Australia we had Murray Golburn and Fontera 'claw back' money already payed to farmers to try and keep the show on the road. Failed for Murray Golburn ended up been sold too the Canadian company Suputo.
Yeah feeds heading north isn't it. Pke is $407 spot for us northlanders. DDG $ 710 Tapioca well over $500. and gosh whats urea and DAP going to be in the autumn when the rain gets more regular it's already insane. Urea and sustain are actually double what they were last year aren't they now.
But whats the situation on the maize silage? All that has got to go before the new stuff goes in the pit, hows it looking and when will it be ready? Could you bunker the old silage on the concrete apron/yard at the old shed youre pulling down, if you dont use it all. Double handling sucks, but wasting feed is worse. Seeing cows all happy and playful chasing the tractor makes me laugh, they are hilarious.
Not sure when it’s going to come off now, probably a couple more weeks. I’ve got another bunker that I can put it in so I can feed it out for the rest of the season, might be a bit of double handling but too much feeds better then none 👍
Don't wanna blow that profit from the good solids prices, but all the other inputs have gone up too, fert and roundup holy crap man 🥴 and good old gubbermint with a new near 3% levie on top of all the other increases they are making business now pay that extra money coming in is just going to go right back out the door
That view from the milk shed never gets old. From Auckland we luv yah. We've had piss all rain as well
Thanks 🙏 hopefully this weekend or start of next week 🤞
Great vid , I always enjoy watching .
One thing is for certain , it always rains after a dry spell . 🙂
good vid mate!
Plenty of rain up here in North Queensland, a very wet weekend. Will try and send you some 😂🤣
Sounds like some parts of Aussie are constantly getting drenched 😅
Enjoyed

I’m surprised the national milk production isn’t down further than it is 🤷

Yep got about 70mm today so great result, 😂 well he might not be for too much longer!

Not many sheep around here but that is a great idea, I might have to keep a eye out!!
Hope you all get some rain soon

👍
Hustler, the chain version, are popular in N.Ireland. Stallion calf feeders, and Milkbar, are also sold here
They make some good gear! Love the stallion feeders too 👌
Andrew if you could get some old woodchip and put a layer around all your trees itll help hugely to retain the moisture in the soil between waterings 👍😊
I’ve got a heap from the calf sheds so might chuck some of that around them 👍

We're feeding 8 big square silage bales a day by hand, good exercise, they wiegh around 250-300kilos each
👍
Love the camera!
Mate dig around the trees a few inches so the water will pool and maximise water available to the tree
Hope the grass is starting to grow for you
👍

Do your cows stay out all year? We’re lucky we have such a mild winter here compared to you guys 👍
Yes, they do, we mostly calve in March and April, our spring, so in winter cows are late lactation or dry, so not quite as bad as it would be with cows at peak.
Great video Andrew 👌
Great video Andrew, your editing skills are 👌
Thanks mate 🙏
Hi Andrew we’ve just started to calve here in Co Down and it’s bloody freezing your video reminds me of last year’s drought here when we had to feed cows in June for the first time ever
Hope calvings going well for you Eric 👍
I have used a calf feeder for hauling water for calves and tree saplings the last 2 summers respectively; it worked well
👍
I have some good third cut hay you could have but the freight would be rough!!! LOL It sucks having livestock in dry weather. Always worrying about feed for tomorrow.
😂👍

Pretty standard here 😂👍

My lawns cracked really bad but that rain was a beauty!
Have a good day
nice vid andrew and good video
Thanks 👍

Yeah it’s a hard one aye but at the end of the day you just got to go with your gut and do what you thinks best 🤷

Yep they’re pretty robust! That’s a few more than me 😂
And Mike from Our wayoming life have one too
Wow super bro u r farmers which place very nice
We’ve got a chainless hustler has feed over 16,000 bales and still going strong
👌
We received about 30 cm of snow here sofar today. Hope the trees survive. Do the chickens roost on the tractor?
That’s a bit, yes they do but dad goes out at night and chases them off 👍
Thanks for another great video. Are your tress Locust trees? And is a drought common for you?
I’m not sure what they are now sorry.
Yeah pretty common for our summers, would be nice if they weren’t
Logical name for the calf feeder
Dairy auction was up again
At least that’s a positive 👌 you would think it’s looking good for next year too
True Andy is fonterra going to pay the full $9.20 kg/ms or are they going to keep some back
Have you decided if you'll be at the national fieldays?
What do you mean fontera keeping some of the pay out back?
At the moment that’s what’s forecasted so hopefully, but they can’t hold any back as it a co-op so the farmers own the company 👍
Ok may be wise to read your shareholders hand book very carefully
Can they hold some back??
In Australia we had Murray Golburn and Fontera 'claw back' money already payed to farmers to try and keep the show on the road. Failed for Murray Golburn ended up been sold too the Canadian company Suputo.

Crazy aye and can’t see it coming down anytime soon 🤷

Great vid 👍 take it all your calves are weaned now ?
Yep we’ll and truely 👍
It's hard to get them back if you check them to hard, they usually just put on weight
Good for next season, not great for this one though
Yeah that’s true, but of a fine line
Tractor could do with a wash Andrew
Definitely 👍
great rain last few days 62mls huntly how about you?
Beautiful rain and it’s all soaking in, think we’ve had about 70mm so pretty similar 👍
