There is a slight misunderstanding regarding a comment I made about the live instrument performance sounding like pre-recorded tracks. I only meant this in regard to the music video. I'm being mistaken for saying that the band doesn't actually play live. I totally understand how this misunderstanding happened (I wasn't 100% clear in expressing my thoughts there) but trust me, that's not what I meant. I was simply commenting on the music video itself. I have no doubts that the Kami band is extremely talented and do actually play everything live. Apologies for any confusion. 😀

No need to apoligize. The truth is somewhere in the middle. What many people dont get about this particular video is that its not a live video. Its and official music video of a live performance. So it is absolutely the audio from the concert but it has also absolutely been massaged a bit so to speak. BABYMETAL sells a lot of blurays of live shows, they put a lot of effort into making the overall quality very high, which includes a little nipping and tucking of audio. Which is not a bad or unreasonable thing. Having seen them 6 times I can say for sure they sound outstanding live but this video is not using raw live audio. Its also not just a studio track either though. Because it is an official music video and part of an entire pro-shot concert. They record the live audio and then do some post work before releasing it. So you are not wrong completely. But the best part is that there are videos that are more raw of live shows and from first hand experience, they sound outstanding live.

At 6:10 you said you "kinda hate to use the word *fun*".......DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FUN IS THE POINT OF BABYMETAL!
    BABYMETAL = FUN!
I completely understand your angle. You are doing critical analysis, with theory and historical references, etc, etc. That is great because not a lot of reaction channels do what you do. Most UA-camr reactions are just purely emotional and some are even fake (I know, how dare they).
Ok, so the people who want you to react to live performances want your hyper-emotional response to BabyMetal. They want to see your jaw-drop and they want you to say things like "I can't believe how young they are and how amazing it is they can command a huge 20,000 - 55,000 size audience", etc etc. Basically, they want you to react to the shock value of BabyMetal.
I love those emotional type of reactions. But I get that's not what you do. What you do is awesome. You do your thing. I have no complaints.
But just keep in mind that it's OK sometimes to take off your college professor hat and just feel, not think, and enjoy BabyMetal critically analyzing them, have a bit of fun, friend. :)

There's no wrong way to enjoy babymetal, I think. The fanbase can be a little too passionate sometimes, but that's because we kinda started as underdogs in the metal scene, being bashed from many directions before being somewhat accepted. So when we see someone interested in learning more, we can go a little overboard with the excitement, and we want people to have the best experience they can. Sometimes we still feel the need to prove ourselves to others.
But from what I've seen, the babymetal fandom is one of the most non-toxic and welcoming out there.

Thanks for doing this. I don't think anybody intended it as a criticism of what you do or how you reacted to 'Tales of the Destinies' in saying you should have seen a live performance, you did absolutely nothing wrong (personally I really enjoyed your reaction and it was informed and interesting), but there are good reasons why people wanted you to see a live performance.
Something you said after listening to the studio track was actually quite telling and I think it goes a long way to explaining why people said what they said and that was you felt Su's vocals were "overshadowed" by the instrumentals. This is one of the major issues (possibly THE major issue) BABYMETAL fans have with the studio recordings - her vocals are over processed and compressed. That does not happen when she performs live where her natural voice and the power of her vocals cut through all the guitars and drums. She is an incredible vocalist when you hear her sing live (even the live videos don't do her full justice). This is one of the main aspects for why people consider they are better live.
BOH, the bass player with the Kami Band, said that when they first came in they were told to play as hard and as loud as they could, not to hold back because the girls were Idols, not to hold back because they were girls.
You were absolutely right - Herman Li and Sam Totman did indeed write the guitar arrangements for this song and they laid the guitar tracks down for the studio version. When it came to the live version you were mistaken when you said you thought it was a live performance with studio tracks, the Kami Band really are that good live. Obviously this is from a DVD and there will have been some post-processing, but honestly that will have been minimal.
The middle 'woah woah' sing along was extended for the live performance (even more than in most live performances when they play this song) because of the occasion and because it was the last song of the night, so it was done for the audience, letting them have their moment.
I agree it isn't their best song, but people wanted you to see the performance to give you a better idea of how BABYMETAL are best listened to and seen performing live so you could see the effort and energy and how they interact so well with the audience - this was the end of a 60-90 minute show and the girls and the Kami Band were still going as hard then as they had been going from the very first minute with no drop in quality, no less energy and no less enthusiasm ... also another thing you picked up on, BABYMETAL are fun and they are entirely unapologetic about that as well.

@@CriticalReactions Thanks for replying. Yes I did understand what you meant - there are official videos where they did (unnecessarily in my opinion) use the studio audio over the live performance footage (eg 'Pa Pa Ya', 'Gimme Chocolate'), but for those it is the full studio audio and not just the instrumentals. been a fan since 2013 and I had never heard the studio version of this song til now. the live version is so much better. this version was the last song of a long show. went to a show this year and it is something you have to experience. I understand you are just music but Babymetal is a visual band. and yes she was 17 at this time of the video. she has been performing since she was 8 9 years old. she is the reason why there is a band not the band first then she was added. no. she was the reason Babymetal was formed. and very few performers have the crowd presence as she has at such a young age. and another piece of info. the lady that does all their choreography is the best in Japan. she is the one responsible for the Tokyo Olympics next year. she has been with them from the beginning. the band has some of the best in Japan also. sometimes the band playing live is not the ones playing in the studio. but I will say this too you aint heard nothing yet if you continue.

I find that, in a lot of other bands, the live performance distracts from the audio quality because the band simply cannot perform the songs as well live as they can in studio so I can understand why you prefer the audio only. With Babymetal, that is not true. They are actually better live, even if you were to close your eyes and not even watch the visual aspects.
The argument is sometimes made that visual (gimmickry) is just there to cover up for poor quality music. The fact that you still prefer the audio suggests you believe the quality in Babymetal is top notch. So in that way, I couldn't agree more.

  • @Zedem0n
    @Zedem0n 4 роки тому +44

They're (we're) telling you to react to their live performances because BABYMETAL is better live for one thing :P. I genuinely have downloaded the live performance of most of their songs to incorporate them into my spotify playlist because they're better live.
The fact that their live shows also happen to be a mindblowing visual experience adds to the musical aspect in my opinion. They've won countless awards now for Best Live Act and their crowd interaction has also won them awards for "Most Dedicated Fans". It also allows you to see (and hear) for yourself that they're not just a band with talented music producers, but the musicians can also play these songs live with ease. Like it's great to compose sublime music but what if you can't find a gifted musician to play the parts you've written ? May aswell ask for a computer algorithm to play the song for you. It loses its artistry touch. Atleast that's my view on it.
I've got to agree that their shows are so good on every aspect (audio, visual, pyrotechnics, dancing, crowd interactions) that you can feel overwhelmed at times. SO many things to process. It's like trying to eat a masterchef plate with 4 or 5 different tastes altogether at once. Each and every one element tastes incredible and the mix together brings you to pure sensory overload. That's how I'd describe BABYMETAL ;-).
What we meant also is that you don't really need to listen to the audio because the live version is almost identical. I understand your concern in the first place about reacting to live performances because frankly 98% of the bands sound worse live let's be honest. Imagine introducing someone to System of a Down by listening to some of their live stuff ? That'd be a dumb move. What we're telling you here is you can safely assume that the BABYMETAL musicians will deliver the goods. They're amongst the best musicians in Japan for a reason. Also live versions sometimes have cool solos from the musicians that you don't get on the studio versions. One example of this would be Rondo of Nightmare. It's a great studio song but if you watch the live version with the solos as introduction, it gives a whole new level to the song. As for the vocals, the studio versions rarely do justice to the singer's voice. She's a true talent and sometimes her overproduced vocals on the studio versions just don't give her the justice she deserves.
And as you said earlier, by listening to the studio version, you remarked that you were more impressed by the work-rate of the musicians as opposed to the singing, but then after seeing their live performances, you also remarked the fact she was also dancing. That is something you wouldn't have picked up from just listening to the audio version. That means as a vocalist she sure isn't slamming her drums like Hideki but I'm not sure Hideki envies her position where she has to sing right and accomplish all of her dance routines and jump and interact with the crowd all at the same time ;).
    PS : I've seen your 5-string Bass, did you notice Boh uses a 6-string bass ? He's a long-time admirer of Billy Sheehan ;)

The band was formed in 2010, with the original lineup of Su-metal (Vocal and Dance), Moametal (Scream and Dance), and Yui Mizuno as "Yuimetal" (Scream and Dance), with the concept of a fusion of the heavy metal and Japanese idol genres. Originally a sub-unit of the Japanese idol group Sakura Gakuin, Babymetal became an independent act in 2013, following Nakamoto's departure from Sakura Gakuin. Babymetal released their eponymous debut album in February 2014. Their second album Metal Resistance was released worldwide on April 1, 2016, charting well internationally for a Japanese band. Babymetal has also embarked on several tours, with a majority of their tour dates taking place outside of Asia.
On October 19, 2018, Babymetal announced that Yui Mizuno (Yuimetal) had decided to leave the band due to poor health, following her absence from live performances since December 2017.[3] Since her departure, the band has performed with one or more backup dancers called at live performances. In 2019, the band introduced three backup dancers that were present in a rotation on each live show to form a trio with Moametal and Su-metal, with the dancers being called Avengers.

Thank you for taking the effort and reviewing both, the studio version and the live version of this song. And while I absolutely can understand your sentiment regards using studio track for appreciating the musical side of an artist, especially with BABYMETAL there are some songs, where the recording clearly is not as good as the live performance. Most of Suzuka's (lead singer) solos song for instance (especially "Rondo of Nightmare"). But it's perfectly fine to review their album stuff.
Regarding your "disbelief" regarding their musicians playing actually live: Trust me, they do play live! There are backing tracks in use for instruments other than the guitars, bass, and drums and some songs use harmonizing tracks to complement Suzuka's or the other girl's voices and sometimes to take some pressure from the other girls since they carry the main load of the dance-performance.
P.S.: When it comes to recreating the distinctive sound of another band, it certainly helps that their producer (Key Kobayashi aka. KOBAMETAL) is a huge metal-head.

One of the things I've noticed is that their songs evolve over time. The studio version of some of the earlier songs are quite different than what you'd hear from a more recent live performance. The song that really showed just how powerful they could be was a live performance of Ijime, Dame, Zettai (No more bullying, forever) at Sonicsphere in 2014.
    ua-cam.com/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/v-deo.html
What stood out about this performance was that they were playing to a crowd of semi-hostile metal fans who'd mostly never heard of them before. This tour was their first foray into big venues where it wasn't just filled with people who were already fans, and they nailed it.
Just for an example of something different in their catalog, I"ll also post links to a ballad, "Akatsuki" from Tokyo Dome (Black Night) in 2016, ua-cam.com/video/g2372C5PJLM/v-deo.html , and a fun song from their new album which I can only describe as pirate metal, "Omajinai!". ua-cam.com/video/rqSUu6tR8sE/v-deo.html

The studio version of this track isn't just influenced by Dragonforce, the guitar is written and performed by Herman Li and Sam Totman.

Thank you for taking the time to check out both versions, and for understanding our motives for recommending the live version! Personally, I don‘t really like the guitar sound of the album version. It sounds different from the other songs, too, so I just assume it‘s Totman‘s and Li‘s sound (I don’t know much about Dragonforce). So the guitar sound is another aspect of why I prefer the live version.
One question: At the end of the video, did you still think the guitars were pre-recorded?
Crowd interaction is important at BABYMETAL shows, many songs are created with that in mind. So as you already assumed, the audience is certainly enjoying every second of that extended middle section. I’m pretty sure for most of them it’s a highlight of the show. Personally, I love watching those scenes on video as well, I‘m amazed by the passion and dedication of the fans (especially the Japanese ones). So on one hand I do understand that those parts might seem a bit long for people who are not sharing that passion, but on the other hand I think at least a musician watching this must appreciate those moments, because it‘s exactly what most of them are dreaming of, isn’t it?
Oh, and no need to hesitate to use the word „fun“. I use it all the time when talking about BABYMETAL. To me they are frankly the most fun Metal band in existence.
If you get back to them later, my recommendation would be one of the more „kawaii“ and genre-fusing songs like „YAVA!“. Those are what makes this band really unique.

"At the end of the video did you still think the guitars were pre-recorded?"
Yes and no, I don't know yet. I re-watched some parts of it and I'm fairly confident that there is a close up of the drums where there is an extra drum note heard that the drummer doesn't play. BUT regardless it just means that the music video used a studio track for (at least) that section of the drums. I don't believe that there was a backing track used for the actual concert.

Sam Totman and Herman Li wrote the guitar parts for Road of Resistance, and actually played them on the studio cut of this song; how can it not sound like Dragonforce?
There is a tradition in Japanese theater of interpreting music and lyrics through dance, and at times Babymetal does that, where the movement adds context lyrically. A perfect example of this is Gimme Chocolate, where the opening verses sung by Yui and Moa aren't actual words just onomatopoeic sounds, and the meaning behind them is brought into focus by the dance.

I did give this video a thumbs up for the fact that Critical Reactions took the (extra) time to not only react to the the song but two versions of the song. I think people bring alot of themselves to any song they might listen to or anylize. I will let others decide what this particular analysis might say about the analyzer. That being said, there were many points made that were spot on about breath control and overall presentation of the live performance that I concur with. Thanks again for reacting to BABYMETAL.

The mixing of genres(ska, death metal, heavy metal), funny lyrics that originates from Jpop culture, cute and confusing choreography just like what Gimme chocolate did, Kami Band's fantastic intro, chanting section which can be easily followed by people from different countries. It just got so many things that make us love Babymetal.

Something being missed here, which is more plain to be seen if you react to the video Rondo of Nightmare (with Mischiefs of God Intro). You'll see that the Kami God band that you are seeing here, indeed plays live. They are a rotating group consisting of:
    Leda Cygnus (guitar)
    Takayoshi Ohmura (guitar)
    Mikio Fujioka (guitar, RIP)
    BOH (Bass)
    Hideki Aoyama (drums)
    Isao (Guitar)
All are well accomplished studio/session musicians, or play in their own band; in Ohmura's case, he plays with and is a protoge of Marty Friedman from Megadeth. So the band is live, and with Babymetal's range of songs going from Jpop to Speed metal to Black metal to metalcore, to Prog metal, they are all up to the task and exceed it. I'd definitely suggest Rondo of Nightmare next, followed by Akatsuki.

I think Kobayashi painted himself into a corner composing whatever he felt like in the beginning when it was just a little school-project done on computers. He then had to get top notch musicians who were able to play it live. But since the metal was more or less dead in Japan and many metal musicians were surviving as session musicians, music teachers, and playing small clubs, it probably wasn't too hard.
Babymetal runs most of their live stuff on click track, with some pre-recorded parts. So their live stuff is usually quite close to the studio version.

Really nice reaction, and it is great to see someone who knows what they are talking about discuss in a bit more depth rather than just have someone listen to the song silently and then say ohh ahh etc. You are right that this is not really a "live" performance, as like their Gimme Chocolate vid it is basically a studio-cleaned audio-track with the live show. It is worth listening (tho maybe not as a reaction) to some of the live stuff as (like your points about Blues) it can be quite different when properly live from a musical perspective on some tracks. For example on Awadama Fever (a more pop oriented track) the studio version is a little over-produced. It's quite clean with the more pop higher melodic elements just a bit too crisp and possibly even a little time-synched. This means that it can feel a bit unemotional and a bit flat. The live version (the best ones on youtube are a single live recording over a compilation of video recordings) however is far more distorted, giving a much more metal/rock driven feel to the guitars that helps push the song along, and ceates a better juxtaposition between the music and the lighter singing (one thing fairly unique in this band is how weird it sounds by having both the very low metal notes but then pushing the singing into a totally different and unexpected range). The rawness of this result makes the entire song feel totally different, in a way that you don't get in Road of Resistance. As I say, not one for a reaction as such, but something that I think you will enjoy as a contrast to this. Thanks for the vid, and look forward to seeing more! :)

The KAMI band on the last tour consisted of the two guitarists and bass from Galactic Empire. Takayoshi Ohmura is a very technical guitar player as he is a teacher. He was also in Marty Friedmans band and he was in the most amazing group, Liv Moon ua-cam.com/video/ej98AVy4dkc/v-deo.html and with Akane Liv on vocals ua-cam.com/video/eRi7BrIZHmc/v-deo.html where they played classically infused metal much like Nightwish. BOH is one of the most intricate bass players and his ua-cam.com/video/r-mL_s3x7jE/v-deo.html bass demonstrations are interesting. Mikio Fujioka (RIP) was so wonderful and had a Jeff Beck Jazzy style in Harmony X ua-cam.com/video/_G-r-uuKv_s/v-deo.html and Led Boots ua-cam.com/video/e8iHy6QHnkU/v-deo.html .. In concert they do rely very heavily on their backing tracks and they are all on the click track. Su does strive to be perfect and sing everything but the backing vocals are quite often canned. It sounds as if there is always a backing track for each (including Su) down in the mix as well as the instruments that are not there in a performance to use as needed. Everyone involved in this production is well versed in their craft. Koba-Metal, the producer had a band called Coalter of the Deepers C.O.T.D. so he has experience. Check these out if you care but the pieces in this equation are much more grand than Babymetal and that is saying something. If you listen to a Babymetal album you will have trouble counting the genres that might be in just one song. A brilliant puzzle that shouldn't work but does. There are a huge number of fancams that show just how well this plays out on stage.

I prefer seeing live versions. Studio versions are enhanced and more layered (sometimes overproduced depending on what band) and if made a mistake cut and pasted. Any band can be made sound good in the studio. Instrumentally and vocally.
With live performances you can not hide all those things and you see the musicianship right in front of you. So if they are still able to get that high quality live, they are just a great band.
Probably that's why you prefer studio versions, cause most bands can't live up to their studio recordings on stage. There are of course bands that can pull it off and sometimes because of the freedom of playing live, differenciate from the studio recording and make it more amazing. For me that is what defines the musicianship of a band and i look for bands that sound live just at least as good as they would on a record and make you think twice if it is live or pre recorded.

For me, I think music come first before visuals like any other bands. When babymetal first formed, they picked Su-metal because of the vocals.

You really need to watch, and listen to Rondo of a Nightmare to see and hear the caliber of musicians in the Kami Band. Then you’ll begin to understand why they are so good live.

I am a bit disappointed in the BabyMetal Fans today for the comments and instant hate you were getting. There is no reason for the shortsightedness and naivete that every video on youtube is exactly as it was live. No matter what sometimes they will doctor the video after the fact especially with a music video going into a bluray like this. This is the reality of the japanese music industry they want it to sound as close to the album as they can. We all know that the Kami band would never pretend to play with a background track and this is not what he was saying. Personally I enjoyed this reaction and was glad you expressed your honest thoughts.

I'd like to suggest looking into Emilie Autumn. She's called her music "Victoriandustrial" and a lot of it lives up to that. I've found that she's excellent at evoking emotions through her music, and I believe she plays all the parts of her tracks herself except maybe the drums? Her songs are pretty much always complex, layered journeys into the mind of someone who was training to be a concert violinist but got derailed by life events and went in a different direction, but she does some very interesting things vocally and musically that I haven't heard many bands do.
She doesn't have a lot of live performances on UA-cam but you can find studio audio for most of her songs pretty easily; for one that (for me) sends chills up my spine when I hear it, find Scavenger; if you want to hear her play electric violin there's an entire six minute song called Face the Wall that's just electric violin, but obviously that doesn't have any other composition stuff to look at; one of her older songs, before she found her more recognizable style, that's especially unusual musically is Second Hand Faith.

Probably my favorite songs of hers, and some of her more popular ones, would be:
      Girls! Girls! Girls!
      Opheliac
      Fight Like a Girl
      Four O'Clock

    You could try
Epica - Ascension - Dream State Armageddon (Official Lyric Video).
That band uses orchestra and choir elements in their music. Sometimes those elements are playd by real instruments: retrospect live, we will take you with us and in some studio albums. So I guess it could be called composing :).

you don't have to listen to those talks, that you have to look at visuals to fully enjoy a performance, then it's a half song... I'm not like a crazy fan of BabyMetal, but they are cool, they're live versions of the songs are much better, not the visuals, even just the music itself. I Hope you can react to one of BANDMAID video, they are so dope, got some crazy creative and very talented musicians

Not to disappoint you but I've done a Band-Maid reaction already and wasn't a fan. They are clearly talented musicians but the music wasn't for me. I have a couple more of their songs queued up to see if it was just that song though that didn't hit me right.

Maybe you can react to 和楽器バンド (Wagakki Band) they play rock or maybe a bit metal too with wagakki, maybe interessting to hear! I think good songs are 天樂 (Tengaku) or 戦 (ikusa). Thank you for your time.

Let me say, I personally didn't find anything wrong with your "Tales of Destinies" reaction. Hell, I was elated to see someone react to that song! Yes, BM is better live imho, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy just the music without the show. So don't take it personally.
EDIT: Also, I see nothing wrong with calling BM songs fun. So many of them I find I feel exactly the same way!

for a non-metal song I strongly suggest reacting to "GIANTS" by True Damage. This song is blowing up worldwide right now and there's a lot of cool ideas to discover and analyse as a composer, that's also why every reaction channel is reacting to it ;)
btw. I don't know why people dislike this video, I think there's nothing wrong with your idea of doing it however you want

Interesting reaction , singalong bit long. I suppose so but us fans have being eagerly waiting for that bit and every other call and response in there songs Just to show our appreciation . I have even heard the fans sing along to the intro to this song . How should i put it you wouldn't listen to just the sound track of a big blockbuster film ( unless you physicaly could not ) same with BabyMetal seeing is an important part of it . With Tales of The Destiny's they was choreography to go with that ! Lot of us wondered if they could do it but they did and it was great .🤘😁🤘

Older video, but I feel compelled to mention that not all power/speed metal is a constant barrage ala Dragonforce. If anything, I'd say most power metal is the genre keeping the sound/style of "classic metal" alive, especially in regards to melody ala Maiden and Priest. Helloween, eg, is one of the most melodic metal bands ever.

The backing band is definitely real… the Kami Band. If you see the backing band wearing skeleton costumes, those aren’t real musicians. The Kami Band are some of the best instrumentalists in Japan. Kami Band of the West are real musicians but are Americans. They tour with BabyMetal when the original Kamis aren’t available to join the World Tours.
