When I first saw the film, Eboshi seemed like a villain to me as well. From another perspective, however, she is a heroic figure.
In the documentary book of this film, Hayao Miyazaki says that Eboshi, like the women of the Iron Town, has a history of being sold off as a prostitute to the pirates who were ravaging China and Korea at the time. But Eboshi returned to Japan where she defeated the bandits, stole cannon technology, and founded Iron Town as a racism-free paradise where similarly oppressed prostitutes and lepers could live and laugh.
And in Japanese folk mythology, the gods of the forests and animals were fierce and always unfriendly to humans, who could easily take their lives if approached carelessly, and humans had to live under their tutelage. That is why Eboshi, a modern rationalist and godless man, burned the forest.
To add, it was not Eboshi's will alone that burned the forest and killed the gods. The emperor's army that dispatched the monk Jigo also wanted to kill the forest gods and create a world ruled by humans. But they did not want to commit such an impious act as killing the gods, so they used Eboshi. Eboshi also carries out the god-killing, knowing that he is being used. Certainly Eboshi and his friends did wrong, but it was a mistake they made because they had something to protect.

I have the VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray, and have attended several fan-showings across multiple conventions and streaming releases. THIS is perhaps the film of a LIFETIME. Following up on NAUSICA. This is one of the best pieces of art that Ghibli has produced. Very hard to recreate this bottle of lightening. MADHOUSE and GAINAX have come very close. This kinda stuff BEATS DISNEY WITH A BROKEN THORN! Real.

    Some context:
cutting of your hair often represent a point of no return. This is usually more a eastern thing (yet not exclusively).
The moment Ashitaka cut of his hair symbolizes the start of his journey and his willingness to give up his role as prince.
Saying "You are dead to us" is not meant to be brutal, but they respect his decision to leave the clan without the possibility of his return.
Fun fact: Kaya isn't really Ashitakas sister but his bride-elect (the sister only appears in the english dub)
The 'taking in the strength by eating the flesh' is meant in a more spiritual sense. When you eat food you regain strength. If you eat certain foods it will provide you with more energy then others. An deistic beliefs you might entertain the idea that you 'absorb the essence' of the food you consume. Therefore if you consume a more powerful being you become as powerful. As Monoke states this is not something the apes usually believed, it is a desperate attempt to defend themselves against the humans, because their usually tactics do not work against them anymore.
40:00 this was basically jerky. He was too week to chew it himself so he chewed it so he can eat. Basically what bird do for their chicks.

    • @satomz
      @satomz Місяць тому +3

Confirming this context to be accurate.
I'm adding another fun fact. Moro (the big wolf matriarch) and Okkoto Nushi (the boar patriarch) used to be in a relationship.
Moro in the original Japanese movie is acted in the way a seasoned woman talks to an ex from her youth. The voice actor originally voiced like Moro was talking to an old acquaintance, at which point Miyazaki told the voice actor that they used to be an item until about 100 years ago. The voice actor's reaction, understandably was "Huh!?"

It is common in Japan (and probably in Korea as well) to call an older, close male a brother. Kaya uses the old term "Anisama", but you can hear the modern word "Oniichan" frequently in anime.

I watch this movie at least twice a year. It's my absolute favorite movie of all time. So many messages and so many truths spoken in this film.
Ashitaka is like the king of morals - a true example of how people should strive to be. And me being a romantic, I love this movie for the chemistry between him and San, too.
The way they both reach to give back the head, then the neck extends and Ashitaka's not sure what's going to happen, so he holds San, is just everything.
Even the smallest details in this movie help make it the wondrous thing that it is.

Same with me! I didn't really understand it when I watched it as a kid in early 2000s but I watched it again in university and it hit so differently, now it's a tradition that I watch it twice a year (not including when I watch along with reactors :P )

Ashitaka was once a PRINCE of his village, but had to be lowered down into the rest of the shit-ugly World to truly express and find his values. A TRUE Marine. A TRUE Hero. A learning experience for all young Men and Boys and girls and Women... To SEE the struggle and APPRECIATE the struggles of others and to empathize. A GREAT MOVIE.
There is NOTHING great about War. And quit destroying nature and animals for no reason.

5:48 What the old woman said in the original was "We are unable to see you off as per the old code. May you be well". I think they changed the line to emphasize that Ashitaka could not return to the village anymore.

It's such a wonderful movie! Glad you watched it and i support another commenter that you might wanna also check out "Nausicaä of the valley of the wind" with similarly strong nature and balance undertones. One of their first films and the manga was written/drawn by Hayao Miyazaki himself (given it was still unfinished as of the release of the movie but they did good with what they had, took him 20 years to finish the manga)
Eboshi is the voice of human interest imo, not necessarily with negative connotations and more the struggle for us to survive and live well. She helped the women of brothels and took them in, no doubt rescuing them from very horrible conditions. That along with caring for the lepers i feel display a great amount of compassion for her fellow humans, but she's going about caring for them and them alone in all the wrong ways with no consideration for nature/animals. She's driven to make the irontown successful by any means because it allows her to provide for the ppl she loves.
Meanwhile San and the wolves are the equally skewered opposition, only caring for nature and the animals, of course understandibly harboring great resentment towards the humans exploiting and destroying the lands, killing animals mindlessly and cruely. Even abandoning their own when San's parents threw her at Moro to save themselves. But they never consider humans to be a part of the ecosystem, something that also belongs in the natural order of the world.

oh and if the human vs nature, industrialisation vs myths and all the grey area of Mononke hime didn't give you enough of an existencial crisis ... watch caves of the fireflies .. I didn't know anything and the title sounded mysterious yet interesting .. had nightmares for months

you're probably not gonna read this anymore since it's more than a week since you've uploaded, but here are my thoughts on this film (my favorite of the Ghibli films):
This is such a great movie about conflict, anger, hatred, nature, life, and humanity in general.
and unlike most man vs nature stories which are so biased against humans (cough couh blue people Avatar cough cough), this actually provided a proper view from both sides.
And as easy as it is to view Eboshi as evil, like you said, it's not black and white.
Eboshi is very shrewd, cold, and ruthless, but she is also the only one who cares about the social outcasts like the lepers and the oppressed such as the brothel girls.
She creates weapons that destroy and kill, but only to arm her people to be able to protect themselves.
while it's not as obvious, the Gods and animals of the forest are as imperfect as the people of Iron Town, Jigo and the hunters, the Emperor, and Lord Asano and his samurai.
They quarrel among each other as much as the humans do, The Apes, the Wolves, and the Boars fractured and disunited against the humans despite the existential threat they pose to not only the forest, but to them, the animals under them, and the Forest Spirit itself.
They also as savage as the humans as well, as despite saving San, She and her wolves still tried to kill him.
and ultimately the Forest Spirit, who literally represents nature at it's heart, it's both life and death. animals eat plants, animals eat each other.
The Forest spirit, despite being lord of the forest and the other gods, seems to be the most disinterested in the conflict. it kills moro and Okoto, while letting San and Ashitaka live.
because that's how nature is, it lets animals die, plants burn, without a care, because it doesn't. but that doens't mean it's evil, it's simply it's nature, no pun intended. its a cycle of life and death, and as the ending shows, irregardless of what humans and animals do, nature will continue to go on, even if you destroy it. life will find a way.

This is one of my favorite movies. I saw it for the first time when I was probably a bit too young to really understand it, and parts of it were a bit more frightening (Like Okkoto becoming a demon). Turns out my mom happened to think it was a kids movie, whoops! But we still watched the whole thing and at least for me it is cemented as one of my absolute favorites. It also probably nudged me towards more of an appreciation of nature and an environmental world view. I enjoyed the reaction and feel a lot of the same things you felt when watching this movie!

6:19 Unfortunately, those who are cursed cannot return to their village. In reality, those who contract an epidemic or break the taboos of the time and do something that negatively affects the entire village are banished from the "village." The curse received from the gods spreads throughout the village. That is why Ashitaka leaves the village as a "dead person," with no one to see him off. Cutting his hair is a ritual for the "dead" while still alive. It is the same ritual as when one becomes a monk or nun.

Honestly, this movie means a lot to me and I’m just like you, really sensitive when it comes to nature, animals and their right to exist in this world as well as humans. Our race is so definitively greedy that we tend to want everything and anything just to destroy it later on. This move is a lesson and everytime I watch it, I’m really emotional because it impacted all my childhood (I’m 22 yo now but I first watch it when I was 11). Anyways, ghibli movies have always strong moral about war, ecology, life and emotions. This is so impactful (sorry for my bad English I’m French)
