I have to agree here... the entire album, front to back, is incredible. Hybrid Theory is the album name, an homage to their initial name before changing it twice to find their footing in Linkin Park.
I still remember the day this album came out. Bought it in a record store in Dublin, brought it home and just got lost in it. To this day, one of my most favourite albums. RIP Chester
funny like 2 months ago I actually re-bought mint unopened versions of hybrid theory and meteora from discogs lol I had them when they came out unfortunately when my first car got stolen all my CDs got taken too....slowly been building back the collection over the decades
The thing I admire the most about Chester's vocal skills is his capability of keeping his voice on that threshold between screaming and clean singing, it's almost like he has two voices singing at the same time.
Definitely do Breaking The Habit next, the first one I've heard by them and that I still remember catching on MTV the first time back in the day. Both the video and the song are fantastic.
You need to see a live performance. The intensity Chester brought makes the studio stuff sound like he was phoning it in. Breaking the Habit would be a great choice.
I saw them live at the Super Dome in New Orleans back in 2002/2003. It was amazing! Mudvayne and Blindside opened for them, both great sets as well! Will never forget that experience being on the floor, front row.
Seeing someone discover Linkin Park is priceless. Man, seeing your reaction to Chester’s first scream brought a smile to my face. Looking forward to more Linkin Park reactions in the future!
This music video also hints at what lead Chester to do drugs to begin with. Chester was sexually abused by an older boy who he thought was his friend. It started at 7 years old and ended at 13 years old. Chester started doing drugs and drinking alcohol at 11 years old just after his parents divorced. He lived with his dad but he was either working or asleep. His dad was a detective for the Phoenix Police Department investigating sex crimes against children. When Chester finally told his parents about the abuse his dad was very upset about not realizing his own son was a victim of the crimes he investigated and didn't recognize the signs in his son. By the time he told them his abuser couldn't be charged as the statute of limitations had run out quite a few years before. He was afraid to tell anyone what was happening when it was happening because he was afraid they would think he was gay. It happened in the 1980's.
Years ago, a friend of mine invited me to his show. He played guitar for a metal band and he wanted me to watch them play. Near the end of the show, they started a cover of Crawling. After the introductory vocal part, the singer put her hand in the air and the band stopped playing. She said that with all the singing she had been doing, she wouldn't be able to perform that song. She looked at me and asked if I would be willing to get up and sing it. I got onto the stage and sang it for her. I am a classically trained vocalist, but I have taught myself how to perform metal vocals on my own time. That really is a difficult song to sing. After the show, she told me, "Thank you for saving my @ss."
In my opinion I think hybrid theory is the most complete album ever made by any artist ever every single song is absolute perfection you can just sit there and listen to it like hit hit hit hit hit hit hit all of them are just 8/10 or more
Your breakdowns are incredibly detailed. I love how you tear the song down and rebuild it for the viewers. Fantastic as always. Some other LP suggestions: Breaking The Habit, Given Up, Qwerty(live), and Waiting For The End. Great stuff, Doug!
I remember when this song was first played on the radio, the DJ rocked this track three times in a row and we just wanted to keep listening to it over and over again. It was a huge hit back then! So, it's no bother for me to see you listening to it more than once. LOL! Chester RIP ❤
Someone that worked with Lp described Chester’s voice as having this ability to sound like multiple voices at once. You can almost hear these harmonies in his voice when he’s singing. It’s just incredible
Doug, check this out: If you listen really closely, you'll hear a MAJOR 3rd over that C# in the chorus, unlike in the verse where it's minor like you said. And since the vocals are alternating between the 5th and MINOR 6th, that creates an AUGMENTED triad (!!). That's really ballsy in my eyes, subtle as it may be, and it's definitely a characteristic of the early 2000s Nu Metal wave.
As a longtime linkin park fan and watcher of your channel, I enjoyed this a lot! :) First, I want to say that their discography is definitely worth exploring. It is more rich and varied that basically any other mainstream modern rockband I know. So, there are a couple songs off their album A Thousand Suns that may be fascinating to you. "Waiting For the End" and "The Catalyst"+"The Messenger" (short, heartfelt bookend to the album). Great music videos for both. I'm sure you'll be getting tons of requests for their more popular stuff, but I think their underappreciated stuff can give you a more holistic view of their music.
Those chords in the chorus are really cool. Mike Shinoda is a great songwriter, and is really good with hiding cool stuf in, what may seem, 'simple' songs. Also, that vocal melody in the chorus feels minor, while the chords are major.
I had never realized the C# chord in the verse is major until today. It also makes the voice leading in the guitars go from playing an E#(F) down to E for the A chord next. That half step down in the guitar voice feels so heavy.
In a way it’s a lot like listening to prog, it takes some effort on your part to hear everything in a Linkin Park song. Mike Shinoda is very musical, I wonder if Prince was an influence?
I really appreciate how, when time permits, you go through the song again and talk more over it. A lot of channels try to capture the reaction at the detriment of the commentary, and others sacrifice reaction for commentary. Your method allows for the best of both worlds! Plus, having already listened makes the commentary more insightful.
The absolute beauty of this guy doesn't cease to shine. Both his voice and his spirit. Just goes to show, doesn't matter how "$*%(&! successful you are, childhood trauma runs deep. I just hope he is now at peace - RIP Chester
You need to hear Given Up to hear the full power of Chester. It is a beast of a song, but it hits really hard knowing his struggles! Great breakdown of Crawling!!
I remember reading the news on 20th of July that Chester, RIP, took his own life. That was a sad day for everyone.. Their music will never die. This was my favourite song out of the whole album when I was a teen and still is. Such a powerful song The fact that he listened to the song again, to give more points and comments.. That is a first, I have never seen that before. I have high hopes for this man!
It fucked me up bad seeing all of the memorials worldwide in the following weeks. It was thousands upon thousands, and each one had hundreds of people attending.
I think by far their most underrated record (and one of my favorites of all time) is A Thousand Suns. It's a concept album where they deviate from their more traditional sound a bit to create something entirely unique while still having their fingerprints all over it. A highly recommended listen, even if you don't do it on the channel.
Absolutely, same here. As much ass as their first three records kick, A Thousand Suns is such a deceptively powerful album that really stuck with me and made me think more than any of the first three.
I was hoping you'd get to more Linkin Park soon! I think this might have been the first song I ever heard from them. I didn't like the yelling vocals but they grew on me when the same friend who showed it to me burned me copies of their first two albums, and I became obsessed for a while.
would love to see an interview with Mike Shinoda. Going over this song and other songs, analyze it and just talk music in general. That would be amazing and interesting. @mikeshinoda
You should check out the One More Light Live version of this song. It's beautiful, haunting, sad, heart wrenching... Just amazing, the video will get you as well.. RIP Chester dude is an absolute LEGEND 🤘💔
Linkin Park was one of my formative bands. I was nine when Hybrid Theory came out. I can't listen to any of their early stuff without bawling my eyes out.
The first album I ever bought with my own money was Hybrid Theory by LP. I mowed a lot of lawns that year haha! Very unique style and sound for that era, I recommend the Live In Texas show they did during their prime, excellent concert. Cheers Doug!
Suggestions for more Linkin Park: -Anyone from the first album (Hybrid Theory) except "Cure for the Ich" -Anyone from the second album (Meteora) except "Session" -Given up (3rd album - Minutes to Midnight)
Awesome reaction! This album "Hybrid Theory" was like the next Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath for me. It still hits hard. I'm thinking for the next reaction same album "Paper Cut" and "One Step Closer" two more amazing tracks off this album.
Linkin Park did a strings version of this song I believe they used cello and violin. You should check it out--that version is called "KRWLNG." It's truly exceptional.
2017? God I can't believe it's already been 7 years since Chester left us. Thank God we have his music forever. It's like he wanted to give us that gift before he had to go. I've always loved their music but since he's been gone I feel all of these songs on another level now. Just knowing how much he was truly struggling and then finding out why. There's a special place in hell for people that hurt children and I hope whoever hurt him gets what they deserve. He was a one of a kind male vocalist. No one will ever sound like that again I'm afraid.
Chester actually wrote most of the lyrics to this song with Mike helping him. This song was hard for him to sing in this way on his vocal cords and it was also hard emotionally as a reminder of his addictions that he could not over come. Chester got sober from drugs in 2005 or 2006 but the alcohol addiction was something he just couldn't overcome every time he tried. He used music as his healthy way of dealing with his demons that also helped other people to overcome their problems which made him feel good about what he was doing.
Maynard is a supreme vocalist. Top five in the metal world. But I wouldn't consider him a screamer. Yes he has some screams, but Lane and Chester screamed a lot more often. And they also didn't have the range and control that Maynard did
Another wonderful reaction. Very enjoyable. If you want a real powerful, gut-punch from that amazing band, try “Given Up”. It’s brutally strong and heartbreaking, especially knowing what happened in 2017. Keep up the great work, buddy!….er, I mean y’all.
Would be nice, if you could listen to the piano version of Crawling from 2017. It's a complete other vibe or listen to the album version of The Little Things Give You Away by Linkin Park, please.
Linkin Park is definitely a band that I return to a lot. I liked their song BURN IT DOWN the first time I listened to it. What I’ve Done, In the End, Lying from You. They have a pretty good repertoire. Would love to hear more!
"That's a G Sharp! 🤓" ... this "classical composer" always just wants to show off his lil parlor trick instead of just giving a genuine reaction or providing insightful commentary.
Even though Crawling is a 4 chord song, the chorus, when it comes in, grabs you instantly. The vi chord they use in the chorus is actually a major VI, so a C# major. That adds even more intensity to it :)
I had never ever thought i'd hear anyone mention Porcupine Tree, and now that you said it, it makes a lot of sense. I can understand the comparison. You sir are a god.
After you've listened to this album in its entirety you have to listen to and do a review of Reanimation. Its Hybrid Theory but they let Joe Hann go ham with the remixing.
I saw Linkin Park in Mesa AZ when this album dropped. I got in for free as a gift from my older brother who was working security for the show. Mid show, Chester got on my brother’s shoulders. After the show, Brad Delson gave him a guitar pick to give to me. I still have that pick. They definitely put on a great show that night
I never would've thought of "Anesthetize" next to this song, haha. I do hear it now that you pointed it out, though! Given how much you enjoyed this song, I suggest listening to the remix of this song on Linkin Park's Reanimation album. It features the singer from Staind, Aaron Lewis, who sings a great counterpoint melody to the chorus here.
This song and video were the very first thing I ever heard by Linkin Park. With the way it gets right to the rocking chorus, it made a strong impact on me. And I was interested in their work right away. Then I was looking at an album tracklist when I realized they traded in shorter songs. But they could pack in enough expression to execute their art.
Too sad my education did not open the doors to "g-sharp" and alikes. In an act of stubborness i lived a life enjoying musik to the bone. You´re on a good path. Keep it up
So so happy to see you listening to more Linkin Park. If you can, listen to the whole album! Hybrid Theory, Reanimation, Meteora, they're all fantastic. Give their later work some love too.
I like Chester's voice he has a very unique voice. His live performances are more intense than the recordings. Everyone in the band is just a force to be reckoned with
Honestly Doug, you could do a video on every single song of theirs. They really grow/change/morph in each album. The entire discography is a living being going through life.
My girlfriend at the time introduced me to Linkin Park, specifically with this song. Sadly it was the best and only good thing that came out of that relationship. Been a fan of theirs ever since. RIP Chester.
I believe you missed the most interesting harmonic tidbit: The chorus changes to C# Mixolydian b6, which makes the C# major, followed by an A major (Add9), which hints an augmented melody.
Thank you, Sir. Your takes have been very helpful to me. This is one of those songs that helped me get through active war and the PTSD after the Iraq war in the mid-oughts.
The new Linkin Park song is out now! You‘ll love it. It‘s called Emptyness machine and is their first song of the album coming in November. The new singer Emily Armstrong rocks it so heavy… Curious how your reaction will be…
This was the first track of LP I've heard. I remember to this day listening to this on the radio. I instantly knew this was VERY powerful. It is such a powerful track with Chester's vocals. This album is tied with one from Guns N Roses for the best selling debut album of all time.
Just do this whole album.
I have to agree here... the entire album, front to back, is incredible. Hybrid Theory is the album name, an homage to their initial name before changing it twice to find their footing in Linkin Park.
Agree wholeheartedly
Gotta be done, why not do their discography, including the Fort Minor Album - Rising Tied
Absolutely agreed. I recently bought the CD and frequent it from start to finish in the car.
He should at least listen to "Given Up". We all would love that!
I still remember the day this album came out. Bought it in a record store in Dublin, brought it home and just got lost in it. To this day, one of my most favourite albums. RIP Chester
same man, bought like with one week out in portugal. it was mindblowing.
funny like 2 months ago I actually re-bought mint unopened versions of hybrid theory and meteora from discogs lol
I had them when they came out unfortunately when my first car got stolen all my CDs got taken too....slowly been building back the collection over the decades
same here in indonesia. listening endlessly on my walkman and stereo
Yeah. Same in Russia.
He was amazing
"These wounds they will not heal.. and they didn't, did they?"
Damn :( RIP Chester
Best but saddest comment 😞 x
The thing I admire the most about Chester's vocal skills is his capability of keeping his voice on that threshold between screaming and clean singing, it's almost like he has two voices singing at the same time.
Absolutely true! It's what always blow me away and set Chester apart from so many other singers.......of any genre! 💜
Definitely do Breaking The Habit next, the first one I've heard by them and that I still remember catching on MTV the first time back in the day. Both the video and the song are fantastic.
Couldn't agree more, the deep base drop always get me good.
I have the DVD for this song/video. The making of it is so great. SO much work went into it. They are all true artists.
"In the End" next, please. "Somewhere I Belong" is also incredible.
The first album is great all the way through
Yes. My highlights are "Crawling", "Papercut", "Points of Authority", "Cure for the Itch", "A Place for My Head" & "Pushing Me Away"
One of few albums I can listen to in full, in order, know what's coming next and have zero skips
Excellent album definitely holds up
@@remastered-00-pl YES, The whole album is great, but these songs define it!
You need to see a live performance. The intensity Chester brought makes the studio stuff sound like he was phoning it in.
Breaking the Habit would be a great choice.
Yes breaking the habit live!! Itunes festival 2011
I saw them live at the Super Dome in New Orleans back in 2002/2003. It was amazing! Mudvayne and Blindside opened for them, both great sets as well! Will never forget that experience being on the floor, front row.
Would love to see “Breaking the Habit” next. “Given up” is another great song with one of the most iconic screams of all time.
second that, love breaking the habit
Seeing someone discover Linkin Park is priceless. Man, seeing your reaction to Chester’s first scream brought a smile to my face. Looking forward to more Linkin Park reactions in the future!

Be sure to check out Chester's (Linkin Park) cover of Adele's Rolling in the Deep live (No need to do a react, unless you want to)
One of the few times the cover is better than the original.
Somewhere I Belong 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Phenomenal.
Favorite song

„Faint“ is one of my favorites, would be nice to watch your reaction to that one. Greetings from Germany! 😊
One More Light is a great show of what they sounded like before we lost Chester....that song always hits hard.
He's gotta see the live version where he's in the crowd. That one fucked me up bad
Doug, check this out: If you listen really closely, you'll hear a MAJOR 3rd over that C# in the chorus, unlike in the verse where it's minor like you said. Hard nostalgia. Freshman year of high school. This is what brings me to one of the toughest years of my life. RIP Chester.
"In the End" next. 😘

You should probably listen to "Krwlng", the alternative version. It is a bit more psychodelic and has a great build-up before the verse.
Those chords in the chorus are really cool. Mike Shinoda is a great songwriter, and is really good with hiding cool stuf in, what may seem, 'simple' songs. Also, that vocal melody in the chorus feels minor, while the chords are major.

Now, you need to react to their live performance of this song featuring Chris Cornell. Absolutely the best version of this song.
The absolute beauty of this guy doesn't cease to shine. Both his voice and his spirit. Just goes to show, doesn't matter how "$*%(&! successful you are, childhood trauma runs deep. I just hope he is now at peace - RIP Chester
“In The End” would be great to do. Thanks Doug.
You need to hear Given Up to hear the full power of Chester. It is a beast of a song, but it hits really hard knowing his struggles! Great breakdown of Crawling!!

I have always wondered why noone did that - no way I would absorb or hear it all in one go, and if I liked it, I'd want to repeat!
It fucked me up bad seeing all of the memorials worldwide in the following weeks. It was thousands upon thousands, and each one had hundreds of people attending.
Rick Beato made a great video about this song
When I saw "one step closer" on the Late Night With Conan O'Brien, I was hooked to this band
My favourite Linkin Park song raw emotion at its finest
I think by far their most underrated record (and one of my favorites of all time) is A Thousand Suns. 'breaking the habit' next
Suggestions for more Linkin Park:
-Anyone from the first album (Hybrid Theory) except "Cure for the Ich"
-Anyone from the second album (Meteora) except "Session"
-Given up (3rd album - Minutes to Midnight)
If he's going for musical art and not merely vocals, then "Cure for the Itch" and "Session" should be just fine.
and really, "The Little Things Give You Away" is pretty incredible from that standpoint, too
Awesome reaction!

Chester Bennington and Layne Staley may be the best 2 screamers in music history
You don’t know Maynard ?
Maynard is a supreme vocalist. Top five in the metal world. But I wouldn't consider him a screamer. Yes he has some screams, but Lane and Chester screamed a lot more often. And they also didn't have the range and control that Maynard did
Another wonderful reaction. Very enjoyable.
If you want a real powerful, gut-punch from that amazing band, try “Given Up”. It’s brutally strong and heartbreaking, especially knowing what happened in 2017.
Keep up the great work, buddy!….er, I mean y’all.
Pleaseeeeee listen to the first and second albums all the way through 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 they're SO good
Would be nice, if you could listen to the piano version of Crawling from 2017. It's a complete other vibe or listen to the album version of The Little Things Give You Away by Linkin Park, please.
Whole of Hybrid Theory, Meteora and Minutes to Midnight each, please? Pretty please? I'm very curious of your opinion on them as a whole albums
A lot of people don't know this but Chester wrote this song because he was se****ly abused when he was younger. I just thought I'd put that out there.
Linkin Park is definitely a band that I return to a lot. I liked their song BURN IT DOWN the first time I listened to it. What I’ve Done, In the End, Lying from You. They have a pretty good repertoire. Would love to hear more!

There's a video of him singing this with Chris cornell. On youtube
This isn't the best version of the song. The remix version is so much better imo it's called "krwlng"
I had never ever thought i'd hear anyone mention Porcupine Tree, and now that you said it, it makes a lot of sense. I can understand the comparison. You sir are a god.
That first album is solid gold....RIP Chester.
Please do In the End! Though there's _tons_ of good Linkin Park tunes, that one is probably one of their best known.
Shadow of the Day
After you've listened to this album in its entirety you have to listen to and do a review of Reanimation. Its Hybrid Theory but they let Joe Hann go ham with the remixing.
From now on all the time keyboard camara on... no more under stamate any kind of metal. Thanx
If you want to appreciate a great yell of Chester, listen to "Given Up." The way his sings that song, you really feel his pain.

I think I spent 3 years listening to their hybrid theory nonstop on my portable cd player. It was just a great continuum song to song
Points of Authority please please please!
I was looking through Linkin Park reactions and yeah a classical composer doing Crawling was definitely the main event 👍🍻
An entire album reaction would be awesome Doug, the whole thing is crazy good, Hybrid Theory and Meteora aswell.
PLEASE DO A LINKIN PARK ALBUM REACTION
Hey Doug and y'all! Would love you to react to the live version of this song on One More Light Live Tour
So so happy to see you listening to more Linkin Park. If you can, listen to the whole album! Hybrid Theory, Reanimation, Meteora, they're all fantastic. Give their later work some love too.
just do all of hybrid theory bro
Try "Giving up" next.
Reaction to Papercut 🔥🔥🔥🔥
'Waiting for the End' next!
This is one of those songs that helped me get through active war and the PTSD after the Iraq war in the mid-oughts.
you should honestly just listen to the entirety of both meteora and hybrid theory
You may check Krwlng fom REANIMATION album. Masterpiece
hi ! if you want, listen "Rolling in the deep" cover by Chester live withe mike on piano !
My favorites that are definitely worth a listen are: Papercut, Giving Up, One Step Closer and Breaking the Habit.
One AMAZING song you should listen to: Emotion Sickness by Silverchair, you will ADORE it
Y'ALL !!!!
The new Linkin Park song is out now! You‘ll love it. It‘s called Emptyness machine and is their first song of the album coming in November. The new singer Emily Armstrong rocks it so heavy… Curious how your reaction will be…
really fasincating we re amazed by your reactions, im big LP fan me and my mom would like to hear reaction of Breaking Tthe Habit song aslo
This was the first track of LP I've heard. I remember to this day listening to this on the radio. I instantly knew this was VERY powerful. It is such a powerful track with Chester's vocals. This album is tied with one from Guns N Roses for the best selling debut album of all time.
