Are you guys ready for the next generation of "Air Crash Investigation" videos? A brand new episode is coming this Friday. Stay tuned! By the way, I hope you appreciated this "extra" Tuesday episode. Thanks for watching! ❤
It is always a relief to know that everyone on board survived. The accident report states that 14 passengers were "seriously injured" in one place and "very seriously injured" in another. It also states there were no life-threatening injuries. When I saw the condition of the plane when it came to rest, I wondered if everyone was able to walk away. I guess some passengers may have needed help. A large woman who did not want to leave the plane was observed by the captain being carried off by a crew member, so at least one passenger required help.
cristilush Same here. I love the "everyone survives" scenarios. While the pilots made mistakes that were serious the bottom line is that all souls survived to live another day.
This doesn't mean that all souls escaped without life altering injuries, or that all were able to return to work. In fact, this video states that it was “a few YEARS” before captain and copilot returned to flying.
Brisoup1 yep....unions that negotiate good salary/benefit deals are great but when they make it very difficult to fire mediocre employees they actively harm the entire organization including the other employees they represent. No thriving entity should ever be required to keep people.
@@33moneyball No where did it state that these pilots were "mediocre". In the USA it is RARE to land with a tailwind. Why do aircraft carriers turn into the wind on launch and recovery? The wind is a pilot's best friend. AA gets all the blame. Sure the pilots could have performed a "go-around" but there is no guarantee the second attempt would have been any better. I refuse to land in a cross-wind let alone a tailwind. I will divert to my alternate that have favorable runways.
@@thonatim5321 IF you’re lucky enough to find one close enough by. The difference between landing a small plane and landing a jet are worlds apart, especially in a rough tailwind situation. And unions DO protect mediocre and poor employees. Good pilots wouldn’t have to fight so hard for their jobs, especially for a year or more. I’ve worked on both sides of the aisle, in the union and not in the union, and I can say with complete certainty that unions are only called and involved when a “mediocre” to poor employee need their butts covered. Would you trust your family on any aircraft piloted by that pilot?
@@miriamsamaniego3335 I understand the purpose of unions. I, too, have been in a Union as a Committee Man so I know. I am also a Pilot so I know there is a basic level of proficiency that is required to operate or pilot an aircraft. No airline wants to have a sub-standard pilot and will find a way to fire him/her. Union personnel also know who is worth fighting for and who needs to be let go, especially Pilot unions. Mediocre pilots will make enough "little" mistakes that will be discovered and that pilot will be forced out and transferred to freight or even ferry pilots. In the US, these pilots will be afoul of the FAA and no Union can save him/her. I have heard about some cases where the airline will call the FAA and tell them about a sub-standard pilot. Even though the union was able to "save" a pilot, the FAA will perform a "deep dive" and eventually find something wrong and clips his/her wings. The Union cannot save any pilot who is afoul of the FAA.
@@thonatim5321 great info! Thanks! That will make me feel a little better next time I fly lol. It’s crazy how you really never know the true proficiency of pilots when you board an aircraft.
Omg I remember that accident so much!! Our airport is one of the hardest to land on due to the length of run way!! Its so short.Thank God everyone survived.
Another well explained mishap. Congratulations Flight Channel. Just don't understand why pilot picked downwind approach. In any event the failure to effect a go around after bouncing with half the runway behind the aircraft was unfortunate. Common sense has to come in play, training or not!!!
My flight instructor told me that the three most useless things in aviation are; air that's above you, runway that's behind you and gas that you didn't put in the tank.
I just don't buy that the lack of training on tailwind landings. It is one of the things even private aviators are taught in flight school. If you can avoid a tailwind landing you do. I was stunned when I read the runway and the wind direction and the crews decision to keep going as opposed to changing to a headwind landing option.
@@IanMichael19 What's interesting is that multiple interviewed AA pilots (including pilots NOT involved with this crash) stated that they did not receive decent tailwind landing. To me, that sounds a lot like union grooming where pilots plan ahead of time what to say in case of an accident in order to cover their asses.
Awesome man! Keep up the gud work.. I mean, this guys just makes whole 2hrs goddamn documentary in just 12 min, even with realistic flight simulation ..... I'm impressed :)
this is similar to what happened in guyana in 2011 a 737 ran out of runway and crashed into some bushes and the aircraft broke in two everyone survived if you were wondering the airline is Caribbean Airlines
A friend was on that flight. The airplane broke apart just in front of her, so she grabbed her handbag and carry-on, climbed out of the break and called her husband to come and pick her up on the Port Royal road (where the plane stopped)... She was in her early 70’s at the time - she’s still a tough old bird today!
These videos are of amazing quality. Well done like always! But, I just want to point out that if the runway had in fact had the proper groves, that 737 would've been able to stop. Those reversers are extremely powerful and so are the brakes on the -800. It had 4,000 Ft or so remaining. That's enough to stop a 737 regardless of the 14 knot tailwind.
Great work thanks. I’m a pilot, and seeing these accidents/incidents by high time pilots making such mistakes (ignorance/negligence of basic flying/navigation) makes me angry and sad. Angry of such silly mistakes carried by highly experienced pilots, Sad at the LOSS OF LIFES.
As an armchair (Sim pilot FSX) I would have opted for a go around, especially after a very long 4000 ft. bounce on a relatively short, slick runway. But then 20/20 hindsight is a wonderful thing. Fortunately there were no fatalities. Any landing that you can walk away from is a good one. I'm careful with approach and landing speed too. I like 140 kts. for a 737. Full flaps. Max autobrake, spoilers, thrust reversers. Throw out the anchor! Good that it wasn't a water landing either.
I really appreciate the time and effort it takes to prepare these videos for the viewers. I am not an arm chair quarterback but I believe the flight crew used poor judgment to continue the landing when the plane bounced on touchdown. I believe the common sense thing to do is go around and learn from the mistakes made on the original attempt. There is no margin for error on an 8,000 ft. runway. That would have been my decision to avoid potential disaster!
This is really fascinating. I’m a new subscriber, these videos are so well done. I work on Super Hornets and Growlers in the Navy, like my dad before me before he retired and went to Boeing. I’m sure I’ll be joining him, but some of the maintainer error videos are good “lessons learned” too.
Love me some Flight Channel. Could watch all day but think I am out of videos to watch......or pretty close to it. Keep up the great work guys its very enjoyable and sometimes painful to watch at the same time.
Not surprised by another great documented air crash investigation. The addition of the extra hud display really show's more of what's going on inside the cockpit and what the flight crew are doing along with disconnecting of the AP sound, this is what makes your channel the best. I was going ask if a go around could have been performed when the pilot realized he wasn't going to get stopped but you answered that question as well, thank you again FlightChannel for another great video.
When I see these types of accidents, I always wonder if there is some sort of pride factor in play that prevents them from going around. The TOGA switch is designed just for such occurrences.
It seems like every conclusion drawn from the investigation of this incident should have been common practice. I love to fly. I expect that the pilots should have training for a variety of situations. That is why I respect decisions on cancelations of flights. I do not want to be flown by pilots who are tired, have inadequate training, and I do not want to fly through storms, or land in the them. At any rate, this video was awesome, and delivered the goose bump moments of elation for the living! Thank you again for this great video!
"No tailwind instruction". How did they get their wings? It was in the op manual about max tailwind. They just couldn't own upbut disregarded limitations and procedures. They were fortunate to fly again.
Thank you so much for your channel, when i found out i was pregnant and i was feeling horrible throwing up and without energy i would drink cold water and find these videos extremely relaxing it made me forget how bad i felt, amazing channel. Much love xoxo❤️

there s a phisics effect that may be named sometimes ~weight slide~ , an airplane wich bounces and lands again throws all its weight to the front and delays the stopping like a ~sliding~ .
Happy #FanGirl here👏👏 What did we do to deserve an extra video❤❤ Now the fact that everyone survived made this video even better, but I couldn't even imagine being on the plane, especially by the window and noticing that you're not stopping!! Can you say severe panic attack!! Thank you once again..... Anticipating Friday!!

My father, a former air force pilot, says that on day one they were taught to always land into the wind.
Normally they always try and do that. Not sure why this one was landing with such a strong tailwind.
@@ianrivaldosmith There was a massive storm brewing. They were trying to beat the storm.
