Ribeira Funda: The Hidden Secret Of Madeira Island

"Ribeira Funda is located in a valley between Seixal and Porto Moniz and only recently (2006) it is possible to reach by car. Before the road was built, the families who lived here had to climb about 800 steps in a dangerous path carved in the cliffs to get home. This path even took some people's lives.
It is not known the date of construction of the staircase, it is only known that it was the inhabitants who placed each step with rocks of the river and cement to have access to the sea.
The cars were then parked in the old ER101 protected by a cave.
Ribeira Funda was the beginning of Seixal, because the inhabitants of the parish lived first in this zone and then moved to the center.
There were once at least 100 families and a school with about 50 students but it closed (burned and became inactive).
At Ribeira Funda you will not find grocery stores or bars, but there are still sellers that drive here to sell their bread, fish and fruit.
The population shows some reservations in the contact with those who come from the outside, they have a lot of resistance to everything that is strange and they are little communicative.
The elderly people who live there leave very few times (usually only for medical visits) and don't even like to ride cars. Despite the old age, many continue to look after their agricultural lands."
