I laughed when I saw the title of your video, know that there would be plenty of fun content as usual. As the old song says, "I've got plenty of nothing." Once I started watching, I was still smiling--your beautiful rainbow-colored necklace brightened my morning.

Terrific necklace! Griffins traditionally guard treasure and priceless possessions so it figures they're attracted to watercolor paints. Though I'm not a griffin, if there's a fire, I'm grabbing my Roman Szmals as I run for the stairs. Priorities!

    Hi Lindsay!
The more often you say " got nothing", the lengthier your videos become 😁
Apparently a format which works just fine for you 👍
Perhaps other Tubers might take an example 😉
    Have a great weekend 🙏
P.s. your comment counter is stuck at 1.

I had a great customer service experience with Arteza about a year ago. I ordered the 120 set of pencils. I had a duplicate of one color, but was missing another. I contacted customer service and just asked for the missing pencil. They said they were unable to replace a single pencil, but they would send me an additional set that had the missing pencil. They sent a 72 set because that was the lowest size set that contained the missing color. They asked me not to return anything but to donate the extra pencils to a school or some place where someone could use them. They are a bit on the pricey side but their customer service was above and beyond for me, and the prices aren’t so bad if you take advantage of sales.

With Jason back to work, you just have to do what you can and if that is a sketchbook Sunday on a Tuesday, that is ok.. I think flexibility and giving ourself grace when we need to adapt our schedules with whatever life tosses at us, including some balmy 40 degree days with sunshine, with our long winters that is just what you have to do. The schedule you keep still amazes me with all you do get done and share with us here. Inspirational to say the least. Hope you are enjoying the warm temps today too and have a great weekend! Another fun Sat chat! Thanks for sharing and hanging out with us.

As a Da Vinci Paints loyalist, I say yes! to the upcoming review series of some grandfather brands. Da Vinci Paints are vibrant, maximum pigment, re-wet amazingly and minimal shrinkage unlike DS brand whose paints tend to weirdly shrivel up. Their paints are consistent and they are not creating new-ish gimmick colors every year. The price is fair (but I live in California too.) Long may they thrive. lol I've off-loaded all my other brands except a tube of M.Graham neutral tint because I like that they do not use PBk and a small tube Winsor Newton Mars Black after watching your "create your own granulating colors video".

I have never commented here that I remember so I just wanted to say that you for your Sat Chats and all of your You Tube contributions. I look forward to them every week. I can empathize with you when you say that manufacturers always seem to change your favorite products... especially make-up! Oh, btw just had a tiny snow storm, 30 minutes worth. Envy your winter weather there in Maine, believe it or not. I feel I should have been born up north. But, I guess the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

Since I live in Mérida Yucatan our weather is very good in Winter so every February several of my friends from Canada and the US come together for a week of plein air painting then on the last Sunday we hire a band, serve up some local cuisine, and have a silent auction for our art. The fiesta de arte is tomorrow so I will be finishing up some of my art today.

The puppy and lovebirds are very cute. I can't wait to see those. That's really good information about product changes, too. It can happen in a flash. I was watching a pandemic era home show and the paint expert said he has trouble getting dark paints because of manufacturing and shipping problems. That has to spread down the line to artist paints, too, I'd think. It's been warmer here, supposed to drop again tomorrow. Good for syrup production though so that's okay. Thanks for another great Sat Chat.

I have no memory of a griffin on a DaVinci paint tube! They have superior quality paints that have become my go to watercolor paint! I got my books from Rosi’s shop and I am painting and drawing on the covers so those are my current art projects. I probably spend to much time on them but I do enjoy a nice cover on my sketchbooks. I have even coated one with watercolor ground as I was not happy with the drawing I started! I do enjoy watching your videos, even when you say in the title “I got nothing” but you are always a delight and find plenty to say! Thank you for sharing your wonderful sentiments of the day! Now take care over there and be safe as well.

Always enjoy the chats. A very nice start to the weekend. I'm glad you are getting a few warm days too. Actually it's warmer there than in Mid-Missouri. It seems to be stuck at 19 and not budging. The thorn in my side as far as trusted products lately is socks of all things. I relied on Hanes for years and years and now they spin on my feet with the heel and seam topside and get holes with the first wash! I don't know what happened. With a fixed income I hate to buy expensive socks to wear inside shoes and never even get seen! No problems with my art supplies.. yet. Have a great week and thanks for the visit.

Lindsay- you say more when you think you have nothing!!! Outsourcing products means no quality control...& beginning artists like me who have no clue what quality is, can get burned w/out reviews (& Sat Chats)like yours. Your idea of an opinion day (like today) is fantastic!
    Experience is the best teacher!!!
-(btw, in their big box store set of 18 WC tubes,Phoenix also swears " all colours are completely lightfast" .🙄 AND their chalks are like granite!😂 . I couldn't resist bc I hesitate to use the better paints ( your description of a possession being too precious to use is a very real thing ), I couldn't wait to play around w/ the cheap set & I saw the difference between transparent & weak color., and paint from the tube looks better bc you are using more. And you cant even see they might crumble when dry in the pallet until you dry them. I love your channel-

Lindsay...That necklace against the black sweater is so stunning! Just Gorgeous!
As a pretty new beginner, I follow tutorials and often think my really poor results are just me...but now I think it is partly the brand of paint, paper, and brushes that can make a huge difference. I was wondering if you have or could make a video explaining the basics of watercolor paints and what makes them different besides the actual hues. Like quinacridone vs cadmium etc I often purchase paints because I like the shade and haven't given much thought to how they vary beyond that. LOVE the puppy!!! HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY xoxo

I was always told German cars are the best, but apparently the ones sold in the USA are made and put together in South America, so they aren’t as well build. So now I am extremely hesitant. I miss the artist magazines so much. Especially the ones full of projects with transparencies or line drawings in the middle. Paint Works is one that comes to mind. I don't understand why they just disappeared instead of transitioning to digital. They could surely offer a PDF download for the patterns and even videos if they wanted.

If it helps the magazine "Watercolor Artist" is available for free in digital format via Libby, the app linked to public libraries. You only need to be a member of a public library 📖📚. It is not the same as paper, but it is nice to have access. You can ask Libby to notify you when a new issue of the magazine comes out. Enjoy.

    Hey Lindsay,
    So yes what has changed;
Moleskine Watercolour sketchbooks, are awful, I'm told they were a favourite!
Jane Blundell, my teacher, said this to me, which caused me to have an "over-reaction to buy more of a supply that I love".
(So I love the Etchr watercolour, 100 percent cotton, CP, the fabulous texture, warm white pages, A4 landscape in the white linen so much, I bought 6 of them, just in case! Lots of pages. Takes both ink and watercolour well.
It has been handy, as now I have one for swatching, one for illustration, one for collaged serviette rags, and I gave one to my niece. The first one I bought off Jane, ended up having paintings, swatches, flower studies, playing with materials, all kinds of things in it, so it didn't feel like an idea expanded, so when I decided to have topics per book, it is really nice to have them there to do that.)
Straight up, round Derwent pencils from the 50's 60's 70's 80's were very good, creamy and waxy. Later it changed, and recently another formula? They added to their line the lightfasts, and Inktense, and others, but there was a time just before this, when their whole line was really crappy.
Coloured Pencils and watercolour ones, were all one could get, and they both were terrible. They have come back to the party with the new lines....otherwise Derwent would have faded into existence.
I love Daniel Smith paints, but some of the tubes separate, and seem to have way more gum Arabic than needed. One can mix them up again in the pans, but still, they either explode and pour out, overfilled, or the consistency isn't quite right? So when I use Schmincke I find I always get better pouring out of a tube, more often. Da VInci tubes are consistently great too.
QUESTION(S) for LINDSAY (and others reading this?)
I know you don't own many tubes of Daniel Smith, Lindsay, but have you found this happening with this manufacturer in your tubes?
Do you buy /get given DS tubes and find this happens with most of them?
Is it a dud, or a case of overfilling? Is it the end of the batch, or the bottom part, or first part of a batch, with too much gum arabic, rising to the top? Could I send these back, if opened and annoying me?
(I always stir it all in, but I do get shiny areas in masstones, and uneven palette pours. Just not satisfying. I also have to use all the paint that pours out onto some cotton paper, to not just wash it or rag it all away. I feel like a heel, saying it isn't right, particularly when it is most of them! I do squish the sides to get it to pull back into the tube, but seriously sometimes it is half the tube.
I prefer half pans, as they look good, are more consistent, we may use them straight away, and brings back the childhood feeling. If I fill with tubes, it is messy, not as fun, and if I forget to shake them, can be a huge gummy disaster, my tube exploding, my hands covered, they don't dry flat, so they all need to be stirred in the pan, and makes me think, I could never mix my own paints.
Some people love doing this, neat stuff.
Now I can swatch for months, but making my own paint, nope, not interested!
The exception might be say Potter's Pink in Schmincke as a tube, rather than a pan, as it it can be used straight, as it is a difficult one to rewet. Apparently it is one of the nicer Potter's pinks, rich and dark too. It is usually out of stock at Jacksons, UK. For me, saving money buying tubes, isn't as satisfying as opening up a pan that is wrapped like a chocolate, with the foil and paper. It is a sweet lolly that I can not get fat on.
    In kindred spirit,

I have experienced the exploding DS tubes so I always have a pan ready to go. I havent experienced more separation with DS vs other paint but its more likely to happen with granulation mineral based colors. I really like the sticks they sell. They re wet perfectly and are a better value especailly if it's primatek. I have serpentine, socialite and colbalt teal in sticks and they are great. I slice a chunk off and put them in a pan.

I am really curious as to what company that cobalt turquoise if from. Crossiing my fingers that this isn't Lukas, because I know that they changed their pigment, and I love the old version that I own and would hate to no longer get the same quality. 😐
But I don't think the big European brands sell different quality in the US than they do here. Reason for this being that all the packages that we can buy here are also already labeled wth everything that they would need to be sold in America. Not just English language but also things regarding safety, like specifically mentioning that they conform to ASTM. I even have a couple of products here that have an extra sticker on them with the additional infos that products need in California.
    Love the puppy dog picture!
Oh and I think it would be really cool if you reviewed more traditional brands.

I had that experience with the Albrecht Durer Magnus pencils. I ordered a set bc I like watercolour pencils and I enjoy using jumbo pencils so I figured it would be great. Also the Magnuses had higher light fastness than the regular ADs. Then I got them, tried them out on two different sketchbook papers and at least three watercolour papers and I was so bummed. I mean they are not *horrible*. But I have other supplies, cheaper ones that are superior. And it's Faber Castell's high end product, five dollars per pencil. I don't use them, they been sitting in my drawer. I regret buying them.

I ALWAYS look at most recent reviews. For everything. The mascara that I used for several years, that wasn't cheap, changed. I tried their other products and they weren't what i wanted. I looked at all kinds of brands. It took me many months to find a comparable one. It's so frustrating! Some years ago, when I first got into colored pencils, I bought that nice set by prisma for students. I eventually gave those away and bought a set of the really nice ones. Fast forward a few years and I was looking to buy another student set for a gift and the reviews were awful. I went with a small set of the nicer ones and just assumed that either the manufacturing had changed or the sourcing had, because my original student set was really nice. The puppy is completely adorable! It got to the very low 60s here the last 2 days. During work, I left my windows down a couple inches so it wouldn't be hot when it was time to leave, lol! Hope you have a great weekend! Edit: I have to be nice and apologize for the overuse of the word 'nice.' I will be nicer next time and find a nicer word to use instead of 'nice.' 🙃🙃🙃

Sat chat yay!! So i want to add something to the changing art supplies topic- so I think Daniel Smith is one of the biggest culprits in changing paint without telling people- 4 artists of UA-cam have mentioned how colors have changed or differ from older colors they have from the brand: the Transparent Pyrrol orange and Burnt Sienna, Sodalite and Zoisite just changed out of knowhere without warning. Also i have an old Daniel Smitth Dot card and some of the tubes Ive bought definitely dont match the dot card color!!! So you are not imagining it, i think its bc watercolor has blown up and have been increasingly popular the last few years and has tempted those greedy higher ups to rub their hands together...Anyway great sat chat as always!! Much ❤ and thanks for sharing!

That necklace is a show stopper. I know what you mean about tumbling quality and color changes of late. As an Art teachers I supply all my students supplies, so took the lull in 2020 to do some restocking on the pastel kits. Certain colors get used more than others, green for example. So I purchased the exact same pastel colors, same brand, same vender and they didn’t match. I mean like 4 shades lighter and definitely harder, the sticks had cracks in them, usually they are much softer (pastel artist say buttery). Called vendor, told me to check my packaging (in small print) it says they have the right to alter colors formulas according to availability of pigment. This is SENNELIER. A very okd, very respectable art manufacturer. I was flabbergasted. There wasn’t much the vender could do, they get sent what they get sent. So if you find a color you absolutely can’t live or paint without buy a stash of it.

About the motions in quality. I find that often in "white label" products, where companies outsource their stuff to generic companies. I tend to use Schminke a lot, and never had that issue. Same with White Nights. They both produce their own products in their own factories. Schminke is good at informing when they have changes a formula or a pigment in a colour, so you have the choice to buy it in the new version or not. That stability is what keeps me using established brands rather than spend money on budget stuff which I don't know how it will react or whether it will be there in a few years time.
