    This is the best tutorial I’ve seen yet! How many yards of fabric do you use for the tray liners? Thank you!!!

    • @FerretTails
      @FerretTails  4 роки тому +3

      Wellsr thank you! I usually get 3 yards of each color/pattern. Or 6 yards if your using the same color/design for the top and bottom of the liners. But to be honest that’s way more fabric than you’ll need. I end up making hammocks and all kinds of other stuff because I always have about 2 yards of left over fabric. So if your just doing cage liners you could probably do it with 4 yards total, but I would get a little extra just in case.

      Wellsr Joann fabric is always having sales on fleece so it’s normal not to expensive!

    Hi! So glad I found this video! How many yards would I need for just the large bottom pan and the cutout pan on top? 😀

    • @FerretTails
      @FerretTails  3 роки тому +2

      I would get a yard and a half for each side (the pattern and solid color) I cut mine about 40” and then fold the open end back and stitch it to make a finished edge. That will leave you enough room to tuck the liner under the pan to help stop your baby from getting inside of it 😂
      I have another video where I make the ramp covers, but in that video I show how I fold back the ends, in case you wanted to see it ua-cam.com/video/0YuUUMvsNp4/v-deo.html

      @@FerretTails Thank you so much for getting back to me. So if I was doing a solid color get 3 yards and that would do both pans, top and bottom. Can you tell I’m mathematically challenged? 😂

    Your videos are so helpful! I'm very grateful for your tutorials. I have made a couple of liner sets and they work pretty well except I seem to have an issue with thread breaking in my liner seams. The seams sometimes rip when I pull the cover on the pans. I've repaired 3 seam rips now and I'm thinking I may be using cheap, garbage thread. Lol Do you have any recommendations for a stronger, better-quality thread?

    • @FerretTails
      @FerretTails  3 роки тому +2

      I’m so glad you like the videos and that you have been able to make a few sets! As for the thread, I would recommend a good polyester thread, like Clark’s & Coats or Gutermann.

      Khyael Kurosaki I haven’t , mainly because my ferrets use the litter box in their cage and I don’t really have a need to do it. My friend who has guinea pigs is getting a new cage and asked if I would make her liners with uhaul pads in them. When I do it, I’ll make a video!

    What would you say your seam allowance is for these? I noticed you are seeing outside the traces lines but could not tell an approximate seam allowance. Thank you!

    • @FerretTails
      @FerretTails  4 роки тому +2

      I cute my large pans approx 24.5” W x 37” L and the small shelf pans 19.5 W x 24.5 L with the opening being on one of the 19” sides. I cute the ramps 6.5 W x 19” L (unless you have plastic ramps, then I would make a little longer so if you add Velcro it will be able to close.
      For the length, these sizes will give you about 2” extra to tuck the liner under the pan. But the longer it is the more you can tuck it, which may help deter your pet from trying to untuck it and climb between the liner and onto the pan (which my ferrets do no matter how long I make them 🤦‍♀️). But, the downside is, if there’s to much extra fabric you will be able to see it hanging out from underneath the small shelf pans and/or it make cause your pans to not lay flat. The sizes above work for me, but some people like them a little longer. I make the pan liners I sell Esty a bit longer by about a 1.5” in length.

    So do I need 2 separate pieces of fleece to do this?

    • @FerretTails
      @FerretTails  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, you need a piece for the top and a piece for the bottom of each liner. If your making liners for the double story cage you will need about 3 yards total for the top and 3 yards total for the bottom.

    Hey love your cage liners:) I would like to try my hand at making my own. How would you go about measuring your ramps? They are curved which is making it a little more difficult. TIA

    • @FerretTails
      @FerretTails  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Amanda, I have a video on how I make the ramps, I attached a link. I’m not sure if your ramp are metal or plastic, but I make all my ramp cover the same way and so far it has worked great for both ramp types. Also, my cage liner videos is kind of old. I need to update it, but now days, I make the open end of my liners the same way I make the open end of the ramp covers in the ramp cover video.

    Ferrets must be SO different than rats XD I’m about to make some liners for my rattie girls and no matter what, I KNOW they’re going to chew their way under the liner LOL
    EDIT: just finished the video, glad to know that ferrets try to get under as well LOL we have the same opinion- it’s soft and fun and warm and still absorbent, so no matter what it’s worth making liners for our babies!

    • @FerretTails
      @FerretTails  Рік тому

      Ferrets are a little bit different than rats in that not as many ferrets chew the way rats do. None of mine chew thank god 😂 but some definitely do.
      I also have a video on how to make the liners and add an absorbent layer if you were interested, I don’t know how many of my videos you’ve seen , but if you have any video suggestions, let me know, I’m always looking for new video ideas that people would like to see.

    For the open sides, do you sew all the way up to the corners or leave them open? Also how would you add Velcro to them?

    • @FerretTails
      @FerretTails  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Tracy, this video is kind of old, I need to redo it 😂, but in my ramp cover video I show how to add Velcro to the ends. But for the pan liners you would probably want to add Velcro all the way across the opening or at least most of the way across. Also, in the video I use iron on Velcro, but I would no longer recommend that, I only use sew-in Velcro now. The iron on will fall off over time. Here’s a link to that video ua-cam.com/video/0YuUUMvsNp4/v-deo.html
      And you for the sides of the liners, you do sew all the way up the sides.I would also back stitch to make sure the stitches stay in place!

    I noticed your sewing with a walking foot since I’m new to sewing ...what stitch width of would you use on fleece liners with a U-Haul pad between them?

    • @FerretTails
      @FerretTails  4 роки тому

      I usually don’t adjust the width, but I adjust the length to 5. It definitely makes it easier. I always adjust the length when sewing anti-pill fleece or when I’m sticking fleece and uhaul or fleece and batting. It makes it much easier and I’m addicted to my walking foot. I rarely ever use the other feet.

    About how many yards of fabric do you think I would need for my single critter nation? :)

    • @FerretTails
      @FerretTails  3 роки тому +1

      You would need a yard and a half of each fabric (front & back of the liners), if you are doing all one pattern fleece you would need 3 yards. I can get the following out of that amount of fabric:
      - One Bottom Pan Liner, no cutout
      - One Shelf Pan Liner
      - One Ramp Cover
      - 16” x 16” Flat Hammock
      And I make the liners about 4” longer than the actual pans so I can tuck them under the pan to try and keep the ferrets from getting between the layers.

    • @FerretTails
      @FerretTails  3 роки тому +1

      Also, this video is kind of old and I do things a little different now. I fold over the ends of the fabric where the liners open and sew it to create a finished edge. I show how I do it in my DIY ramp cover video in case you wanted to see it. ua-cam.com/video/0YuUUMvsNp4/v-deo.html
