  • The Indianapolis Zoo is located in White River State Park, in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States.
    The Indianapolis Zoo is an institution accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the American Alliance of Museums as a zoo, an aquarium, and as a botanical garden. The zoo is a private non-profit organization, receiving no tax support and is supported entirely by membership fees, admissions, donations, sales, grants, and an annual fundraiser.
    Biomes:
    The Indianapolis Zoo is organized around the concept of biomes. Biomes are areas of the planet with similar climate, plants, and animals. Animals at the Indianapolis Zoo are clustered in groups with similar habitats, which define the biomes. At the Indianapolis Zoo, one can visit the five biomes listed below. Each of the biomes participates in conservation and breeding programs.
    Oceans:
    Sea water covers seven tenths of our world! A trip through the Oceans biome provides a multi-sensory experience that includes stunning animal exhibits and opportunities to view penguins, touch sharks and marvel at this mysterious underwater world.
    In addition to our Oceans collection, the St. Vincent Dolphin Pavilion features multiple daily presentations, and guests can go 17 feet under water to meet the dolphins in their own environment in the nation’s first underwater dolphin viewing dome!
    Forests:
    Along with various flora and fauna, forests are also characterized by diverse animal species that call it their home. Forests occupy about one third of the Earth’s land area and contain nearly 70 percent of the carbon present in living things. Whether interacting with tigers, bears, or any other creatures of the trees, you are sure to feel transported away from the cityscape while in our Forests area.
    Deserts:
    Step inside the Deserts Dome and discover an arid oasis surrounded by beautiful and mysterious creatures - some of the friendlier ones are even free-roaming!
    Sunlight fills the space and guests can often see lizards sunning on rocks high overhead close to the windows. The temperature-controlled climate remains above 80 year round, providing a warm environment where our species can thrive.
    The hot, dry environment might not be hospitable for some species, but it’s home for these creatures.
    Flights of Fancy:
    These beautiful birds in this exhibit come from warmer climates, like Africa, South America, Asia and Australia, and for their comfort, many of the species spend the winter months inside their climate-controlled off-exhibit area. However, the flamingos and the southern ground hornbills will be on exhibit in the winter as weather permits.
    Plains:
    When you walk into the large savannah, surrounded by tall grasses and trees on all sides, you’ll feel like you’re on safari in the bush as you watch a variety of African animals graze. The large exhibit spaces have been designed to provide guests - and animals - with multiple areas where they can watch these beautiful creatures.
    Rides:
    Endangered Species Carousel:
    The Carousel features many different hand-carved animals, such as seahorses, penguins, seals, elephants, rhinos, dolphins, lions, and many others! This charming ride is always a favorite of our younger guests. The Carousel is wheelchair accessible.
    Kōmbo Family Coaster:
    Featuring 13 two-seater cars individually themed as safari jeeps, the Kōmbo Coaster delivers just the right heights, speeds, twists and turns for the whole family to enjoy. Available from mid-March through October, the coaster reaches a top speed of 21mph over a 656-foot-long track with a maximum height of 24 feet.
    Skyline:
    Open 11am-3pm Tuesday through Sunday, this slow-moving, gondola-style ride offers incredible views of the Zoo, especially the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center and downtown Indianapolis. The Skyline reaches heights of up to 50 feet in the air. The 8-minute ride will give you a new perspective of how orangutans view the world, and you might even see one swinging nearby on the Myrta Pulliam Hutan Trail! Each ride car is ADA accessible and seats a maximum of four people. Open weather permitting.
    White River Junction Train:
    Climb aboard the White River Junction Train Ride for a tour of the “Zoo behind the Zoo.” Riders will enjoy a 10-minute narrated journey and learn about our Plains animals, greenhouse, gardens, the Zoo’s 15,000-square-foot veterinary hospital, maintenance and commissary departments and other behind-the-scenes operations necessary to run the Zoo. Available mid-March through December, riders will also learn about the Zoo’s animal conservation mission.

      It really upsets me when ignorant people tap on the glass or make noise to try to wake up the animals. They aren't there to do tricks, it should be a good enough experience just seeing them.

    I loved your zoo tour I've lived in Indiana since 2008 & haven't been there yet &
    now I REALLY want to go & when I get my $ up to go I will be going thank you for
    the tour it was really enjoying except for the beginning with all the kids & loud people.

    • @TomsRoadTrippin
      @TomsRoadTrippin  4 роки тому

      This is an awesome zoo, so much to see and do. The one thing you'll encounter at any zoo is loud people. Depending on what time of year you visit you will see school groups as well. Most are loud but well behaved and they usually move to the next area pretty quickly. Thanks for your comment ☺ hope you enjoy the zoo too.

      @@TomsRoadTrippin No problem. Also, do you ever find it hard to like zoos, I mean with some of the animals being in cages rather than actual wide enclosures? Because as much as I like them I do sometimes feel sorry at certain ones when the animals don’t have enough space. I wish most could be like the Columbus Zoo or Toronto Zoo

    • @TomsRoadTrippin
      @TomsRoadTrippin  3 роки тому

      There have been a few zoo's I've gone to that have out of date habitats for the animals. I try to not interject too much of my own feelings. I try to remain neutral so the viewers can make up their own minds on whether to visit or not. There are several properties I refuse to visit due to the fact the animals don't have enough space. Most zoo's are working to transition away from cages to a more naturally looking habitat.

      My next zoo is a theme park and the largest zoo in Florida. Busch Gardens Tampa Bay will be my next (zoo) it will be up in 3 weeks.

    The elephant exhibit just got expanded and there is now a third yard and a trail where the elephants can travel from yard to yard which is kind of same thing D.C does. There is also an elephant encounter where you can get up close and personal with them, so close you are even aloud to pet one. The only other zoo that has up close elephant counters that I know of is Pittsburgh. This new area is called Tembo Camp (Tembo means elephant in swahili)
