- The Memphis Zoo, located in Midtown, Memphis, Tennessee, United States, is home to more than 3,500 animals representing over 500 different species. Created in April 1906, the zoo has been a major tenant of Overton Park for more than 100 years. The land currently designated to the Memphis Zoo was defined by the Overton Park master plan in 1888, it is owned by the City of Memphis. The zoo is set on 76 acres (31 ha), of which approximately 55 acres (22 ha) are developed.
Since the early 1990s, the Memphis Zoo has invested over $77 million for renovation and expansion. The zoo's animal inhabitants reside in three zones with 19 exhibits, such as Teton Trek, Northwest Passage and China, home to giant pandas Ya Ya and Le Le
The Memphis Zoo is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
Exhibits:
The zoo hosts modern exhibits that mimic the animals' natural habitats, such as Once Upon A Farm, Cat Country, Primate Canyon, Dragon's Lair, Animals of the Night, Tropical Bird House, Herpetarium, Aquarium, African Veldt, Zambezi River Hippo Camp, China, Northwest Passage, and Teton Trek. Viewing all the exhibits requires a walk of about 2 miles (3.2 km). Operating seasonally, trams provide visitors with guided tours of exhibits for a small daily fee; the trams are also useful for shuttling visitors between distant exhibits. Other attractions at the zoo include a carousel, an area with rides, a miniature train offering a scenic view of the Once Upon A Farm exhibit, and several theme-oriented gift shops and eateries; many of these amenities operate seasonally. A children's playground is located next to the Cat House Cafe, and several family picnic areas are maintained beneath groves of mature trees. An ice skating rink is operated seasonally at the zoo; the tented rink has an area of 5,400 square feet for skating. Camel rides and giraffe feeding are offered from March to October 2012 for a fee.
The zoo is divided into three zones that showcase a total of 19 different exhibits.
East zone:
Teton Trek
Northwest Passage
African Veldt
World of Waterfowl
Birds and Bees
Central zone:
China
Primate Canyon
Commercial Appeal Cat Country
Zambezi River Hippo Camp
Bonobos
Animals of the Night
West zone:
Dragon's Lair
Tropical Bird House
Aquarium
Penguin Rock
Once Upon A Farm
Herpetarium
Round Barn
Landscaping:
Landscaping plays a key role in each of the zoo's three zones, both within exhibits and along the interconnecting trails.[23] Water features, such as ponds, waterfalls, fountains, and streams, are dominant elements of the overall design, in addition to artificial rock formations which blend into the containment walls of the animals' enclosures. Other key elements of the landscaping are a diverse mix of trees, shrubs, and seasonal herbaceous plants.

Tom the bird at 16:30 looks like a Pale Mandibled Aracari from Ecuador and Peru. Enjoyed watching, thank you 👍
Thank You for the help with identifying the bird. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed my tour 😊
Totally enjoyable , feels like I’m there too. Love Love seeing all the zoo animals. Keep it up please
Thank You for letting me know you enjoyed the vid. I do try to show everything and will continue to go to more places.
Man, I used to spend so much time at this zoo as a kid in the 80s. Glad to see it’s still going strong 💪🏾. It sparked a love of animals within me that remains today. Great video
Thank You Jeremy, I really love hearing from people that remember going as a kid. Thanks for sharing your memory.
Just finished watching this video with my family! RIP LeLe the Panda🐼 We had a great time at the Memphis Zoo❤️ Thanks for sharing👍
For the most part, the Memphis Zoo is amazing. The Pandas shouldn't have been kept there as long as they we're. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the tour.
@@TomsRoadTrippinplease send the other panda away alive, provided one has died already
very good camera work; looks like a fun place to go to. Thanks for sharing this with us.
My pleasure Daniel, Thanks for watching 😃
I remember going here with my family when i was a kid. I loved it so much.
Memories with your family as a child are some of the best. I hope my tour made you happy 😁
Great video; good narration too. Never went to the zoo when I lived in Memphis. It sure is a nice facility. Wow. I'm glad it's still operating, but it's depressing because no one's there and there's only one of each animal. Kinda sad for each animal too.
This was first thing after opening so not many people there, I also try not to film people. It's a really nice zoo, especially the entrance areas. There are some animals that are alone while other habitats have multiple animals that I may of only seen just one of them. Thank You for watching, glad you enjoyed my tour and narrative.
16:39 Green Aracari
It is related to toucans
Great video!
Thanks for the identification, glad you enjoyed the tour.
Thanks; made for a great virtual date night trip!
Very nice, I am happy you both enjoyed my tour. I hope some of my other vids will help with future date nights.
Wonderful video mate, except one thing 47:50 Teton pronounced, Tee- tOn. Wonderful video, thank you
Thanks for the correction, I've not had a chance to visit Grand Teton National Park. I'll be sure to call the area the correct way 😊 I'm glad you enjoyed the video despite my oral snafu.
Love seeing all different types of birds!!
As do I, so many beautiful different types of birds to enjoy.
20:11-African crowned crane (the sign was incorrect)
26:42-Ripsaw catfish
29:19-Spanish hogfish (the smaller yellow ones with the blue backs)
Thanks for letting me know the names of the animals. Really appreciate the time markers too.
31:21-common white stork
39:20-white-necked african raven
33:07 The sign was incorrect. It is a Jackson’s chameleon
great video, looks like a pretty cool zoo.
Yes it was, very nicely run zoo. Thank You for your comment.
Yes it is i was there with my friends and mom
Finally an awesome vid thanks:)
Thank You, more awesome stuff to come.
That’s awesome keep it up
As someone who frequents that zoo, I wish they would/could do more with the aquarium.
Considering its the oldest area of the zoo now it really needs some TLC for sure. At least they need to fix or replace the display signing.
I was the aquarium today with my friends and i agree with you
I only live about 150 miles away, but I never have the time (work, family and all that fun killing stuff!) but I have managed to make it there twice in the 3.5 decades that I've lived here. And loved every minute of it!
It's a great zoo, I can see why you'd like to go back again. Thanks for sharing
I remember riding the boat ride at 19:48 back when I was about 4 years old and having to ride with a little boy from another family. He was about the same age and spent most of the ride flirting with me . My mom has picture of us on the ride, me smiling really big at the camera, the little boy looking right at me. Very cute memory and nice to see they’re still there after all this time
Thank You for sharing your lovely memory. Glad my tour brought back a good memory from your childhood 😊
Thank You for The Zoo Tour.
Thank You for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed my tour 😁
3130 are Storks. Good video!!!! Thx
Thank You for the info 😊
When I was 5 you used to be able to swim in the stream for when you first walking in it is so good to see the zoo doing so well
That must of been fun, my guess is someone got hurt. Or perhaps it became too crowded near the front. At least you have that nice memory from your childhood 😊
@@TomsRoadTrippin yea it got to crowded
That’s a lot of good info. Thanks
Hey mate, 1 other concern, you seem to be missing a donation page, most popularly Patreon, is that in the works?
I am looking into setting a patreon page and perhaps some shirts with my logo. I appreciate your suggestion.
The design of the architecture emphasizes what is important
We're going for my sisters birthday. Our favorite animals are the lions, rhinos, and octopus.
Loved this video. Had to subscribe. You do really great tours.
The Memphis Zoo is a great place to go for a Birthday 😄 Thank You so much, I'm glad you enjoyed the tour. Welcome to the channel.
Very nice video. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed 😀
I’ve been here to this zoo very good zoo I recommend anyone going there that wants to go or never been

Very enjoyable zoo to visit
This is a great video tour! We just released a vid of their kangaroo Walkabout and giraffe feeding, ok well maybe it was more like giraffe making out! 😂 I think the kids loved the kangaroos or nocturnal area. Thanks for sharing. 👏
I appreciate that, Thank You for watching 😀
The two fish in the eel tank are Lungfish (eel looking one) and Northern Snakehead (the one at the top of the tank)
Thank You for giving the info, I'm glad viewers are helping 😊
24:59 fire eel
25:10 northern snakehead

26:24 black ghost knife fish
26:31 leaf fish

I laughed so loud at 53:10 there is some person in the background a girl i think? that sounds like a Canadian Goose.
Beautiful tour btw!! love the architecture and design throughout the Zoo!!! stunning!!!!
The overall design of the zoo is fantastic. Thanks for watching and your fun comment.
i really loved the video! thank you so much for this, it was an extremely relaxing watch during quarantine
That's great, It's nice to hear from people that enjoy my zoo tours.
I used to live Memphis and I’ve been to this zoo 5 times I think.😅❤️
It's a fun zoo to explore, I really liked the entry plaza 😊
You should do the Minnesota zoo soon!
I'll add it to my list, thanks for the suggestion.
34:31 not an Amazon milk frog. It’s a species of dart frog instead. Wrong sign
The unnamed bird in the bird house is called an Aracari. Great tour. I can't wait to see tours of the National Zoo and Shedd Aquarium. What are some zoos you will be visiting this year?
Thanks Grizzly, the zoo was missing so many signs. I don't have a list of places I'll be going to this year yet. I will be doing the North Eastern US and into Canada. The National Zoo us one of my stops. I won't be going to the Shedd Aquarium this year since I won't be near Chicago. I'll make a post about my 2020 road trip when I have all my plans.
I love these videos
I appreciate that, Thank You 😁
what about the zambezi aviary
It's been awhile since I was at that zoo. I'm pretty sure the aviary wasn't open, the netting was being replaced.
i am trying to remember the name of a long tailed birds that used to roam free there in the mid 40s,, when i lived nearby as a child there, went to a grade school (snowden) just across the street, and often played there after school...these birds would sometimes wind up (with keepers searching for them), in our garage area behind where we lived a block away.
Thank You for sharing your childhood memory. I wish I could tell you the name of the bird you described.
@@TomsRoadTrippin thanks for the quick reply...my best.
Next to the meerkats and big cats (particularly the lions) , my favorite part of this zoo was the ancient Egyptian theme.
Yeah the theming is really cool at the front of the zoo.
24:55 American Eel
25:11 Northern Snakehead
Thank You for the identifications, I appreciate the timestamps too.
What time will the Nashville zoo tour be posted at
I finished editing yesterday and began creating the vid. However for some reason my editing software was lagging a lot through the night. Hopefully it will be completed by the time I'm off work. It will be uploaded as soon as it's ready. Either later this evening or first thing in the morning.
5:18 not necessarily. Big cats are territorial animals, and have a habit of patrolling the borders of their enclosures even if they’re not stressed. They also do this if it’s almost feeding/training time.
Great tour!
Those are some great points, thank you for sharing. I'm glad you enjoyed my tour 😊
Wait wait wait you saw the white tiger there. There are few spots where you can
see it such as 4:40 to 4:42
Nvm
Cool thing about Memphis Zoo is that the entire city is the ape exhibit
WOW
when i look at the comments i cant see the video ?
UA-cam changed the layout of the comments. You need to click the X near the top right of the comment section. You should be able to continue watching the video.
I’m literally watching this as the Prentiss family and the statue of two people is my great grandparents
Now that is very nice to have your great grandparents immortalized like that.
I love it
Thanks Marie, glad you enjoyed my tour
I went recently, the parts I was disappointed with were the reptile house and the aquarium, the bird house could use some fixing up too
Those are a few areas that can most definitely use a remodeling. It's still a fantastic zoo and very enjoyable to visit.
You should tour this zoo in the summer or spring so you could see every thing
I'll go back again sometime
Love Teton trek
That was my favorite area as well.
Plush crested jay
What’ zoo are you going to next
Nashville Zoo will be out on Tuesday
How many aninals are
Could you please complete your question?
A crene or storck
Nerbraska
the bird at 16:30 your looking at is a green aracari

I’m going to this zoo tomorrow
I hope your having an amazing time 😁
Can you please do a video at the Little Rock zoo?
I had plans to visit that zoo during my Oklahoma trip but it wasn't open. I'll get to it eventually, not sure when 😒
Awesome
Thanks Jordan 😁
Can you visit a animal kingdom park is in Disney World in Orlando ?
You can find all my Animal Kingdom vids on my other channel Walt Disney Planet. I have a vid all about the animals.
@@TomsRoadTrippin thank you
Not only does this zoo suffer from missing signage, some signage is just wrong. Those tigers are not Sumatran, they're 'Bengal' tigers (or more specifically Bengal hybrids). Likewise, those giraffes are definitely not reticulated. Seems like they're either rothschild's, or not of a specific subspecies at all.
Another wrong signage is the crane. It says white-naped, but it's very obviously not that, but a grey crowned crane.
I really like this zoo though. Great collection of cats, birds and nocturnal animals.
It annoys me when signage is missing, it's even worse when they're wrong 😒 it's still an amazing zoo, they just need to fix a few things.
Love it
That's Great, Thanks
25:43 looks like a Jack Dempsey
25:47 assorted as above are class Cichlids one of the largest groups of African freshwater fish they each have own name ive had over 50 pairs in a single tank with a pacu a cousin to perrahna up to 26:15 cichlids
26:18 knife fish / ghost fish bottom left black with white
26:55 2 Oscars middle orange/ black+ white
27:00 the label you showed
26:29 ( you may had missed seeing him) top water predator by filters 1 group of African leaf fish he never moves and likes to stay by filter or behind it theres another i like best it looks more like a mini grouper and very intelligent like Oscars its more of a bottom cave/ cavity dwelling predator bass like will surface feed too had both kinds together beautiful camo and they know your its owner and does tricks for treats . They like to hide because full grown 6-8 " max they're laid back not over aggressive like cichlids are for being same sizes.
Thanks for sharing 🎉 nice aquarium/zoo
Thank You for the identification of those fish. Some of the tanks make it very difficult to see some of the critters. I'm glad you enjoyed my tour
What is the next zoo tour?
Next zoo will be up in a few weeks
@@TomsRoadTrippin thank you
I didn’t know it was open in December?!
I went at the end of November
am going there next week
That's a great zoo to visit, I hope you have a fantastic time. 😃
That crane u saw it’s a red crowned crain
Thank You for the identification
Le Le already looked thin at that time😮
Yeah, looking back at my your I didn't realize at the time how bad they both looked. I hope Yaya gets to return to China soon.
Which zoo did you like more Nashville or Memphis
The Memphis Zoo was better themed which made the animals habitats more enjoyable for the animals.
It’s a really good zoo
I really enjoyed this zoo Seth. The theming is fantastic.
16:29 green aracari
Thanks for the identification 😊
My fan white tiger!!
Meant my fav white tiger!!!
White Tigers are gorgeous and very rare. It's always a treat to see one 😀
Did you know they permanently closed their Stingray Bay Exhibit
Seems more zoo's are closing their stingray habitats. Perhaps they are redesigning the area like Zoo Tampa after all the stingray died.
@@TomsRoadTrippin no Im pretty sure its permanently closed because I read it on am article
Thanks for the information

So reptiles live indoor during winter
Yes, any animals at the zoo that require a warmer climate will be moved indoor for rhe Winter.
Wood the Guineafowl be ur 6th fav bird
For the all white variety, they are gorgeous. Even without the colors they have very nice feathers.
26:42 is a sturgeon
I appreciate the info.
Black and white smaller bird not culture. But a white named raven. Damesell cranes with ut it. Other birds were white storks
Thank You for the info, it helps to learn the correct types of animals.

Is there no rhinos
The zoo does have two Rhinos, I don't recall why they weren't out that day.

Hip-hop hurray 😀
Do the Nile crocodiles don’t like the cold
Since they are cold blooded they prefer warmer a climate. The crocs on display at the zoo are housed in a suitable habitat during the Winter.
Memphis zoo haves red billed hornbill and toco toucan
