- Here's some video of the Challenger Tanks at Bovington Tank Museum putting on a great display for the crowd.i gotta say this is the best sounding tank for sure.
The Challenger 2 has a 12-cylinder, 1,200hp Perkins Caterpillar CV12 diesel engine and a David Brown TN54 gearbox, with six forward and two reverse gears. Second-generation Hydrogas suspension and hydraulic track tensioner are fitted. The maximum speed by road is 59km/h and 40km/h cross country. The range is given as 450km by road and 250km cross country. - Авто та транспорт
that tank sounds amazing when its on the concrete, the screeching it makes when it turns, wow. THATS scary noise. the roar of the engine is too, but that screech is scary haha
Although a very very beautiful sound, the whistling is not the turbos, it's the 3 huge cooling fans that make that sound
I don't think you could hear the turbos over the big v12 anyways.
And a lot of transmission noise, people forget with any sort of heavy equipment most the noise, especially whining/howling is cooling fans/transmission, hydraulic pumps make a fair racket too.
@@deezelfairy Yes, exactly that, this sounds more like a V8 engined double decker with a really loud Voith gearbox, the only thing telling this is a tank is the tracks
@@teravolt6113 D854
lol the most idiotic thing to assume thats the sound of the cooling fans😂😂Its a huge engine with huge turbos. Makes a huge whistling noise too.
Ahh the beautiful sound of a Perkins diesel.
Beautiful
What a sweet sound.
The Chally might not be as advanced or as competitive as its contemporaries, but it sure as hell is a beautiful piece of machinery. I hope the British military won't give up on their tanks.
Definitely, the chally is an absolutely beautiful tank and it has the potential to be one of the best in the world if only the MoD upgrades it.
@@Koyomix86 no it doesnt have that chance lmfao. You need a completely new tank designed from ground up. This thing is far from being the best as a platform no matter how much you upgrade it but yes it sure does look beatiful and sounds nice
@@thomasschumacher5318 Does the latest news upset you? Lol
@@kalicom2937 what? you think because this pos is being sent to ukraine makes it good?
HOW MUCH ARE YOU PAYED FOR THIS BS, LADDY?🥺🥺💀💀👎👎
0:42 I love how it looks like an owl perched on a branch
Used to work on Challenger 1 with & Armoured Workshop, QRIH and 14/20 Kings Hussars. Brilliant bit of kit, British engineering at its best. Absolutely awesome sound, I was back at Hohne ranges or Ex Lionheart in my Chieftain ARRV which was slower forwards then Challenger in reverse gears!
back in the 80's, i was a guest of some family friends who worked at ROF Barnbow for an open day to celebrate the sale of challenger tanks to the Saudi Arabian government. I got to see how these things were made on the production line, the size of the lathes and milling machines was stunning, they were making both challengers and cheiftains and it was interesting to see how the castings were assembled.
When your a young kid and you think tanks are awesome, you can imagine what a top day it was.
You jammy git! I'd love to quiz you about that. I used to visit crossgates a lot in the late nineties and saw Chally's coming off the line. An amazing sight. Why did the bloody gov't shut it down!
whenever i here that noise from the tracks it always makes me think about the people who fought in the world wars and that sound even now could be one of the scariest sounds ever for those people.
Great memories on Chally 2. That one has the exhaust heat shields on and the reactive track armour.
I've heard them both back in Kuwait, this video doesn't do the Chally justice,
The sound of that monster is awesome
thats gotta be my favourite sound of all time
@JerryTheHeretic
The driver was just easing up on the throttle in order to balance the large tank on the tip of the small hill. The tank has more than enough power to climb a small incline such as that one. The turret turned only to help the driver balance on the tank as well, not because he "Strained" to get up there, as turning the turret wouldn't have made a difference anyway. If you've ever seen a video of a struggling tank, you'd see the tracks slipping, and mud / dirt flying.
i just love the pyping sound of the tracks
Sometimes when I'm wheeling my Hayter lawnmower back into the shed, it sounds like a tank from an old war movie. :-)
Nice looking and great sounding turbos.
Thank you for this footage
this video was made the day after i was born, wow
11B that callsign still gives me the chill. I hated working on it....
Love the Tank and the place, Awesome Place to go to =)
Im an Abrams kind of guy, but the Challenger is an awesome tank!
to me the Challenger is the most beautiful/elegant looking tank...how are the Brits making such beautiful war machines?!
Love Our Challenger 2 Tank it sounds awesome and looks awesome as well sry to say its still 1 of the best Tanks in the world for its Speed ,Armour and Power
bruh but nothing against the leopard 2 a7
@@Future183 yeah thats why i said one of the best leopards are awesome tanks as well
@@Future183 why does it have “nothing” against the leopard?
@@bleedinactionman8578 because the challanger2 is wayyy to slow and way to heavy and expensive , the leo has the better weaponsystem, the better maingun, thats why the british government wants to replace the Challanger 2 with the Leopard 2. The challanger only placed onve and as 6th at the natotank competitions in 2018, the leo was always first, once in 2016 3 leos took the first 3 places, even the old leo 2a4 outperformed the abrams at the natotankcompetitions. And please do me a favorite and dont start talkin about the rekord of the challanger2 with the longest tankkill in history (4km), every tank can do this today u just have to find a tank thats 4 km away and u have to be lucky to find a place thats 4 km flat without any hills. And dont start talkin about the destroyed leopards in syrie cause these were old first generation leopards without any protectionsystem against incomin missles and incomin rounds and those leopards stayed on an wide open hill without any support and they were used as artillery with bad traned crews.
You didn't mention it, i'm just saying a 70 ton composite box with a cannon is never going to be stealthy.
easily the best looking tank :)
nice looking tank :D
beautiful sound!
needs one of these in my life!!
fabian thomas then get off utube, go to the Uk and live there for 5 years to get citizenship, and then build up some muscles and enlist in the army. That should fullfill ur requirement.
I LOVE THE SOUND OF A TURBOCHARGER ON A DIESEL.
I love this beast.when this event held on what months and dates planning to go one day
Tanks are amazing!
For everyone saying that you will hear it from miles away, you're forgetting a few things. Firstly, this video is from less than 100 metres away by the look of it so how can you judge the noise properly? ALL tanks are noisy, a lot just as loud as this. The tank was throttling it in the video, in the field it would be a lot more controlled with its power. Terrain effects noise massively. In tight forest, you can't even hear Chinooks till they're right above you.
The engine was originally of Rolls Royce design - CV12 was it not? Shrewsbury built.
Yes Rolls Royce/Perkins CV12.
Our country has made a lot of high tech and very good equipment, this is one of the best tanks out there probably par with the leopard and m1, and we have made many brilliant aircraft and tanks, infact we invented the tank.
very nice tank
damn that tank is huge
Certainly the best looking Met without doubt!
Love that turbo whine.
bravo pretty tank
Thanks for the reply to my question
Majestic beast.
@firkit2 the tip is du which gets not red hot but white hot which melts a hole through the armour allowing the charge to blow inside
i'd love to go to this but it costs A LOT for me to come over from Aus
Challenger is very cool!!!
Engine does sound GREAT!!!!!
has a nice perkins sound.
Love how youtube recommended this to me after i watch how to challenger tank war thunder
wow 17 years ago..
the bovington arena sure has changed in 8 years
+1
The Spitfire of the tank world.
The day of the tank is over! It is about to pass into history the way of the bow and arrow! I am an ex-tank soldier and I can assure that planes and helicopters can destroy tanks from 40 miles away! Now that is not fair!
nice I want one great bit of kit
Awesome.
Listen to them turbo chargers sing - its magnificent 65 ton monster
its undesputably the best in the world.. people should not be deluded to the fact. its battle tested and undefeated so far. no other tank can claim those claims. thats why this is the best,
True, only confirmed Challenger kill was by another Challenger in a firendly fire accident.
@@davidscoltock3970 It was a blue on blue shot by Abrams(what kind of twating idiot do you have to be to shoot an another friendly in sight) and 2 crewmembers died and 2 survived.
@gizmo1watts1
It is a Perkins 26.6 litre diesel engine. The Abrams uses a turbine.
@Misiame I bet it only works on soft muddy ground.
The gas turbine is actually a very quiet engine. Which is why the Abrams was nick named whispering death.
@tamaskrisztian its the British challenger 2, main battle tank in the British armour divisions.
LOL gota love the brake lights
cool movie!
twin turbo cv12. absolute beast of an engine, weighs 6.5 tonne alone
OMG a 13year old comment
@WonkyTonkBotty Russian tanks are smaller in all dimensions, with only 3 crew (auto loader) rather than 4 (and yet still more cramped), Ammo squashed into the turret, rather than in separate "blow out" compartments at the back of the turret (which is safer)and have more of a reliance on reactive armor, which is ligher than the composite armor used in Challenger, Abrams etc.
did we all see the M1 Abrams export versions all over the streets of Egypt during the recent unrest? Nice order for tanks a while back, a bit tricky now....
Man, Bovington has some cool tanks, but the Challenger in the "Desert Rats" Gulf War paint scheme is my favorite. Of course, the two Tigers come in close second.
Also remember the Abrams uses Chobham armour that's several generations older than that used on the Challenger II. Abrams is a great tank but Challenger II is newer and better.
Yes - and this with 1500 horsepower and 120 mm glattrohr!
@reda888 they have turbo lag but like all turbo charged vehicles once they are going thats it. Its only really in first gear when your first pulling away you notice it.
An Abrams also uses a Jet engine
Best tank
OMG i love that movie.
wow it can drive!
Yup. The Challenger.
Turbodiesel...nice. :)
well it sure isn't the beauty queen of the tank world...
From the inside, LOTS more noise, and live firing! Challenger 2 A Driver's Story. RWxY
I love turbos
The green and black one is Challenger 2
The desert cam one is Challenger 1
@tamaskrisztian its a mix match, their leopord 1 tank looks like the m-18 helcat turrent , now their leopord2 tank chassies looks like a m1a2 abrams chassies , mixed with a chellenger 2 turrent idk tats what it looks like to me
@rubennojoda thats a defensive smoke screen, for the tanks escape
Megatron! :)
Best tank in the world.
@YB49887 Sure the turbo diesel sounds great, but the Abrams engine start is totally awesome sounding, almost like science fiction.
I wish I could get my diesel ford fiesta to sound like that LOL.
Chally sounds like the tank in Unreal Tournament 2004
Perkins V12!
oRGASMIC
Sorry... M1 and Leopard sound like wet farts in a colander compared to the Chally. :P :D
Best tank in the world !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Challenger 1+2's have been war tested. T-72's, T 80 + T 54/55 T62's are also war tested. All tanks are noisy especially in the interiors with turrets hydraulics so they wont hear each other from kilometers away.
Great sound quality with which the video camera was made?
The last shoot! What was the version?
Imagine meeting that on a battlefield
Kill it with fire! Hellfire! From an Apache...
Nick Dzink Yes of course lets shoot a British Challenger 2 with a British Apache great idea.. It has countermeasures anyway
AddictiveBiscuit Well I meant American ones. They seem to have destroyed quite a number of Abrams during both Iraqi campaigns.
Nick Dzink Four Abrams was disabled by a Hellfires from a Apache a few crew members was injured.
Type in "major Robert kane" he'll tell you about meeting several tanks on the battlefield on foot and on his jack Jones mate check it out
0:30 Me trying to find a signal on top of a rural mountain.
is it true, that same engine & transmission also equipped to chinese upgrade of Type 59G?
@EggChops No I deff hear it miss firing.. maybe the spark plugs needed to be regapped..
i like the new frenchie tank leclerc
what is that white smoke?? comes out from the engine only on reverse or it has a purpose?
I want some ripsaw action now. :$
Imagine Fitting That Engine On A Ford Ranger Wildtrack 2017 Model
