    The Challenger 2 MBT is an impressive tank hopefully the Challenger 3 will be even more impressive and deadly, I do need to go to tank fest one of these days to experience the noise the thunder of tanks.
    I am restoring a Chieftain MK10 MBT that is fully operational and very nearly restored all we have left to do is to respray the outside. I intend to post videos on how to maintain the Chieftain, starting procedures of the engine, starting and operating turret, using the improved fire control system (IFCS), trimming the gyroscopes system to stabilise the 120mm barrel and many other features on the Chieftain MBT like operating the search light. I will also discuss the L60 Leyland engine good and bad points.
    Also, we recently completed restoration work of a 38 year old Leyland 804 tractor that might be of interest!

      @@rvarmour9255 Thank you RV Armour .
      I too love the roar of the L60 engine whilst the L60 under performed in its infants years this engine came good towards the end of its life but sadly the L60 will always be remembered for being a high maintenance engine in its early life but in all honesty it was only performing 450hp having to move around 46 odd ton of tank back in 1966.
      I think towards the end the variance was up to 14a which the MOD did most of the improvements due to British Leyland failing business. I understand some of the top engineers formed a company that worked with the MOD.

      The Challenger does indeed "look good" but the reality is that because of chronic underfunding it is regarded as somewhat obsolete in comparison to the latest M1 A3 Abrams and the Leopard 2 A6/7 . The Germans are always upgrading the Leopard 2 A6 and the Canadians with whom I was attached with in the late 90's and late 2000's would never swap for the Challenger 2 . If the UK govt aren't investing properly into Tank Development then you get to run around with an out of date piece of kit.

      A formidable opponent for any opposition! The critics of Challenger 2 often only look at the specifications on paper and don't take into account real-world ability or the crews.

    • @AllThingsCubey
      @AllThingsCubey 2 роки тому

      @@rvarmour9255 How does the real world ability differ from the data? And British tank crews have consistently shown themselves to be no better than any other nation's within NATO, so it's hardly the case that inflated sense of British ability will make up for hard deficiencies in the vehicle, like a significantly worse gun, and lower mobility than our contemporaries.
      Challenger 3 is making a huge number of improvements, but over the years of NATO exercises, export trials, and combat, Challenger 2 has proven the data correct. The vehicle, when compared with other NATO MBTs, has issues in every relevant area of MBT design. EVERY AREA.
      -Firepower. Rifled gun is woefully obsolete. It offers zero accuracy advantage when using APFSDS, whilst HESH, the round it's optimised for, has been outdated since the 1970s. The L30A1 CHARM has worse muzzle velocity, bore energy, and significantly worse penetration downrange with the fin round than smoothbore rivals, and lacks any form of HEAT/ programmable round. Very glad to see this dinosaur being retired for a modern gun on Challenger 3.
      -Fire control. It's 2022 and the British still are 5 years away from a commander's independent thermal vision system... The TOGS thermals are a generation 1 system, so obsolete and low in quality that it caused the 2003 friendly fire kill on another Challenger 2, being somehow mistaken for a T-55. Not only is the system outdated as hell, but it's shared by commander and gunner (driver has none at all) leading to zero night hunter-killer capability. Meanwhile, on exercises and in competition for export, the fire control system has proven consistently inferior to our NATO peers' tanks, with lower hit ratios at all ranges, in all conditions. This should not be a surprise, as Challenger 1 was also lamented for among the worst fire control systems of its era, noted in multiple export trials.
      -Mobility. It's not all about speed, though Challenger lacks in that department for sure. Compared to Leopard 2 and Leclerc, the Challenger 2 is beaten in every area of mobility, from torque curves and acceleration, to trench crossing and vertical obstacle. In Greek trials, Challenger 2E frequently stripped its own tracks when mounting obstacles, and the vehicle's ridiculous 75 ton weight in TES standard means it's the only NATO tank too heavy to cross NATO standard 70 ton bridges. This weight is a vast logistical issue.
      -Protection. The single most overhyped aspect of the vehicle. If I have to read "70 RPG hits" one more time, when the actual incident was 13 hits, several of which were not even HEAT, but fragmentation anti-personnel warheads which pose zero threat to armoured vehicles. The one time a modern weapon hit a Challenger 2, an RPG-29, it penetrated the hull through the ERA, because (surprise) a tandem warhead will mess you up when it hits a 76mm steel plate with some ERA and nothing else protecting it. The vehicle's Dorchester armour hides from criticism because "it's classified, you don't know," when there's fairly well documented evidence that even the turret is, at most, 550-600mm KE protection equivalent, which is nothing to brag about when Abrams and Leopard 2 are pushing 800-1000mm. A Greek test officer compared the Challenger 2's protection data to the Leclec, and exclaimed his disappointment after having heard the vehicle's reputation prior to seeing the data. Regardless of how pissed off people get claiming it's "not a weakness", the driver's viewing trench in the hull is absolutely an issue, leaving only a 200mm space for an armour package between the driver's optics and the turret ring, which is far too small to provide any significant protection. As it stands, about 70% of the frontal arc of Challenger 2 would be an easy penetration for modern APFSDS rounds compared to closer to 30-40% for the Abrams and Leopard 2.
      So, how is the "real-world ability" of the tank and its crews addressing these issues?
