that case is called a squeeze and shake... you place your fingers on the small parts of the bottom then squeeze in a bit and shake the tape out.... hence "squeeze and shake" they were all the rage in the 90's... that Gremlins is way cool
I learned from CinemaSickness that if you're thrifting VHS and find something you want, scan the rest to see if any have a squeeze and shake and you can put it on what you're buying.

With those plastic VHS cases, you squeeze the sides on the ribbed parts and the tape should just slide out. That scratching sound you heard it normal. 😅
