      That big ring eats a lot of soil... IE: The 3 cu ft bag of peat would cover 36 sq ft one inch deep and the 8' dia bed is 56 sq ft - so each big bale really only added say 1/2" - and the smaller bags, even less... Its full though... No doubt...

      Thanks so much ! We modified it some for the sweet potatoes, but the main mix would work for about anything... You just have to cut the Nitrogen down for root crops or they will grow huge plants, and little roots, the opposite of what you want....

      @@BumbleBeeJunction agreed..I need to see if you have corn videos on planting and fertilizing methods.. I've gardened for years here on oregon coast but my mom never had luck growing some things so I never tried. I'm finding that there were methods she didnt know about for growing certain things like corn. I'm gonna try little melons next year too..so.many short season things now days with access with the internet

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  4 роки тому +1

      Well... A few hints real quick... You can plant melons in the shade, and dig a hole... Put a cup for balanced 10-10-10 in the hole, then about 5" of dirt, then plant your seeds about 1" deep... Let the roots reach the fertilizer on their own, and give them room to go around it too (out to the side) and the plants will do well... Corn, you fertilize 3 times... Before you plant... At 18" (which is also when ours gets its one and only weeded) and when about 25% of your corn has tassled on top.... And when you see the silk on the ears, count 21 days, and begin test harvesting, it should be ready within a few days..... If you have a short season, get a short days to maturity variety (usually they are marked "early")... Good luck, and we are always here....

      @@BumbleBeeJunction thank you so much.. I did do corn this year and it did good. I followed the hoss tools advice. It was the same as yours..He had a video on corn.. my problem was knowing when it was ready and it not all being ready at the same time. Very sporadic readiness. We have warm weather but not everyday . The corn seemed to love the hot days.
      Will do your advice on the melons next spring..will do that on my squashes too

      LOL... 56 sq ft of surface area eats up a lot of dirt fast... Filling it the first time was the real trick... ahahaha

  • @raynall3593
    @raynall3593 4 роки тому

    Being filthy is not a bad thing, means you have been working in the dirt. Learning a lot, going to try that cause we have mostly clay soil that is hard to grow root crops and get any size, so thanks.

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  4 роки тому

      I hear ya... Clay can be a real nightmare... It is made of such super fine particles and they bind in such tight layers, that it makes it about impossible to do anything with... The trick is to introduce surface areas... Lots and lots of organics (grass clippings, leaves, wood chips, etc) that will spread that clay further and further trying to cover all of that surface area... If you have access to perlite or vermiculite, those are great surface makers too. Look for the large bags at greenhouse suppliers, not the small expensive bags at box stores... But organic matter is your best friend battling clay... Don't hate the clay though, as you will find out those fine layers are also packed with nutrients... Once corrected, it can make for some extremely fertile soil....

      @@BumbleBeeJunction I remember the energetic days! Lol. They seem to be fewer and farther in between nowadays, so I'll just watch the energetic crowd and reminisce! Lol.
      I wanted to ask y'all for advice on a different subject this time since you sent me on the right path with "water run-off" and uncaring neighbors. NC Statute #156-23,24,25, all broken and level 3 misdemeanors, and now I'm waiting to see if it'll be an easy fix or if I have to take further action. I'm hoping and praying for the best. Thank you, again for the direction.
      And now I have bookoos of perennial flowers that have out grown their spots so I need to do some thinning and I've given everyone I know as much as they'll take over the years. I don't want to throw them away, and at this time I can't get to a market to sell any, so my question is do y'all know of a program that accepts free plants and flowers or a place. If not, do you know anyone just starting a yard or that just would be interested. I can give you a list of the names, and if you and Tina are interested I'll be happy to send all you want your way. Mine are mostly what I call "old school" flowers, like Canas, Iris's, and Monkey grass, plus a lot more. If I don't get something done with them all the ditches within 5 miles of me are going to get them. Lol. Hope y'all have a great day, and God bless.

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  4 роки тому

      We do not, but all we really do (like in our potato bucket videos) is add Phosphate (Bone Meal) to the buckets before we "hill up" our potatoes... Otherwise, potatoes do not really like rich soil (makes them grow tops rather than potatoes)....

    I am just setting up my raised beds and the Lord must have led me to your channel. Now I know how I will fill them. Your process is much easier and produces much better results than the lasagna garden layers that I was going to use. How deep are your beds? I was planning on making mine 11 1/2" deep. Is this depth adequate? Are your beds completely filled using only super soil, or is there a filler material in the bottom? The different soil mixes for different crops is wonderful. Does this mean I will not need to rotate my crops? Thank you and your wife for your service. My husband walked across France and Germany in 1944 and was wounded 1 week before then end of the war. He's 93 now and fully recovered! These experiences made you all very special people. With my best regards, Dawn Cramer

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  4 роки тому

      Thank you for sharing your story. Your depth should be just fine. You can fill the bed with straw and peat moss, and just put the soil mix on top. Then you can add to it each year as the straw breaks down, spreading the cost of filling it over several years. And since you are refreshing the soil each year, there is no need to rotate crops. I hope this addresses your questions. Blessings !

      LOL... Man I just go by the old southern saying "Hit a lick, sit a bit, hit a lick again..." ahahaha It aint quick, but we get it done... Never tried goat droppings... I got a buddy here locally that swears by 'em though... Best advice I could give ya is check the smell... Strong scent means its hot (high nitrogen) and might need to sit a bit (year or so)... Low smell should be good to go though... If it is hot, maybe try spreading it on the garden this fall and throwing some rye grass on it... Let that grass pick up the nitrogen and then till it in next spring... Let it sit a couple weeks after you till it, and you should have ya some nice rich stuff to play in.....

      I have seen it done in 5 gal buckets (drill holes in the side about an inch above the bottom) but only 1 slip per bucket... Keep the soil light and fluffy (add perlite or vermiculite) in whatever you use so they can expand... You really, in the end, only need about 1' in depth... They stay pretty close to the surface...

    ...... I wish I found this video before planting this year’s slips. I did learn (Somewhat) not to make (some) of the same mistakes as last year. My soil is fluffy but I didn’t layer it. I I used a lot of Coconut Coir, perlite and other potting mixes from a Growhouse supply store. I also used something called California Gold(well rotted fungal heavy forest wood), and worm casting mix that has rock dust and some other stuff) I couldn’t find my bone meal, so I just mixed what I had all together. After planting the slips, I used a liquid fish fertilizer that had no Nitrogen (0-10-10). Will it mean a repeat of last year? I hope not.

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  4 роки тому

      Actually, your mix sounds really good... Any excess nitrogen (which disolves in water and is carried away) will be knocked back by your initial heavy watering of the slips to get them to take... Just don't add any more nitrogen back in... And you can apply bone meal a few times (say a week apart) and water it in good later on... I think you will be fine though...

    I am a first time gardener & first time to grow sweet potato. I have a 2' x 8' x 14" deep raised bed to start . This is how I understood by watching your video:
    bottom layer: use 1 cu ft pea moss + 24 quarts perlite + 3 pound fish bone meal. Mix well.
    top layer: 1 qt pea moss + garden soil (how much?) + 2 bags of black cow manure (how much?) + 6 pounds all purpose fertilizer (such as veggi & tomato with 2:5: 4 (NPK). Mix well only this layer. Do not mix into first layer. Am I correct?

    Since your 2 layers are so thin, and get mixed together in the end, would it be ok to just mix them together as one?

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  5 років тому +2

      The growing layer (which I opened by stirring - added our supplements - and stirred again) is actually from 2" deep down to about 12" deep... And it is mostly Phosphorus (the bone meal)... The top 2" layer is mostly Nitrogen... You want the roots down in the Phos where it will help them grow strong / large... And you want the plant in the upper nitrogen layer to grow a strong plant... So no, you would not want to mix the two layers... I do understand it might look that way, but they are separate for a reason....

So we topped it as you see here... That will eventually stop, and we will just fertilize when we plant... And I should warn you that not everything we do is cost effective dollar for dollar... The bed was originally filled with straw, and then topped in a soil mix similar to what you saw here... As the straw breaks down, the soil level drops, and we add back as you saw...
