Hey everybody! I started a raised garden bed company, Gro-Rite! My first product is a beautiful raised garden bed you can assemble in 10 minutes or less. Claim your bed before they are gone - pre-orders are piling up fast and quantities are limited. -> groritegarden.com/launch
Justin…I am 64 years old and I learn more about vegetables and landscaping from you than people twice your age. You should consider running 2-3 day clinics for gardeners. I would pay to attend and buy some plants!
Justin my Friend, this video was PACKED with very useful information. I've never seen this process before. I ordered slips that arrived at the wrong time and were less than desirable. We had to start over. What an easy way to grow your own slips. Awesome!! Thanks for sharing this with us! Cheers!!
This was the clearest tutorial I've ever seen. I just subscribed and about to stsrt growing sweet potatoes. I look forward to watching you more. Thank you.
This video is a work of art, much like your other videos! Justin, this medium is perfect for your teaching and sharing. Alex, I appreciate the camera work and thoughtful compilation of the final product......excellent work!!!! 😃 Looking forward to the next one!!! Thank you!!!
I will tell you why i subscribed right after watching this video. Because you got right to the subject matter. Pack full of information in a short period of time. Love it.
I love how you’re talking about making a greenhouse with the plastic container. I do that for all kinds of stuff not just sweet potato. I start seeds in those every year. I’ve got seed trays but I like those better.
It's so great seeing you're as nuts about Stout Ollie as I am. I've been using it for years and there is just nothing better. The company is in Eloree SC, not that far away from where I live so all the feed stores and garden supply places here sell it. Don't know how far away they sell it but it's sure worth every cent, best compost ever. They don't call it "'Mater Maker" for nothing :)
You are right!! It's definitely more popular in SC, where you live. I discovered it about 3 years ago and I love it!! It's probably some of the best compost on the market.
Hey Justin! This was a fantastic video! As someone who has grown sweet potatoes a few years now, I totally appreciate the differences in method. One thing that I do that might be different is as the plants get taller rather than snipping off the sprout off plants, You can add more soil and those will continue to grow more tubers off of that direction. So, you can take two plants and plant them low in the planter and as they get about six or 8 inches taller you can lay them down on the soil and add more soil. Since you have a longer growing season it would probably work better for you. Then, if you don't want to dig out all of your potatoes on the same day, you know that each of those groups will likely be ready a week to 10 days apart. This is my first time on your channel, and I look forward to seeing some of the other videos you've made! Thank you for making people plant people!!
Hi Justin! Thanks for sharing!! I really hope you’re going to do a garden tour this year of William and Susan’s garden and Bruce Duncan!! I absolutely LOVED their gardens last year and I watched them repeatedly! Thank you!! 😊
Oh my gosh funny you mentioned that! Spoiler we’re filming Williams next week! ❤ and then Bruce’s! I can’t wait to go back to both places but really excited about Williams ❤
I’m just getting started with gardening and have found a lot of unclear information, but this is by far the best video I’ve found for growing sweet potatoes. So informative! I feel like I know what I’m doing now. Thank you so much! I’m excited to see your other videos!
Thanks, Justin!!!! My only attempt at going sweet potatoes was a failure but I'm in zone 4/5. 😄 Not the most ideal temperatures. BUT! You've inspired me to try again. This time in a cold frame next year. Great info!
Hey hey...you know who I'm talking too...yea you...! Just seeing this - as always... well done. Hope to see my sweet pots produce this fall ... still waiting on that rain!
@@RealALSK Way to make an entrance! Oh yeah...that Carolina humidity is no joke..remember it all too well, so does my hair! We finally got some rain...and in comes the blight! Can't win...can't lose - somewhere in the middle. Be well my friend! 🐝🌱🌻
thanks for the very clear information! we also eat the leaves of the sweet potato, like spinach, has a paai, or in the wok. makes the plant grow bigger tubes.
I just grew some sweet potato slips. I just didn't know what to do with the slips next. By watching your video help me now know what to do. I am in zone 6 , 6a.
Thank you for this, I'm in the UK, so trying for the first time. I feel like an idiot tho, I just planted the tubers that sprouted by coincidence in my kitchen 🤣 I'll dig them up tomorrow, see if I can rescue them!!
Love your video. I wish I had thought of sweet potatoes earlier in the season but if I can find slips I will plant them anyway because I live in SE AZ and we have a long hot (sometimes humid if there's monsoon rains) growing season. Experiment! Your video is very clear about what to do and I appreciate that. Next year I will start my own slips for sure!
This tutorial is A1. Starting my sweet potatoes in Raleigh in May, hopefully I get roots fast so I can harvest this year 🤞🤞 I wish I had done it earlier!
Hi Justin Thank you for making the tutorial very easy for me to start growing sweet 🥔. I have planted slits in September - they are doing well and I was wondering when should I start digging up the sweet potatoes? From South Carolina. 😊
Best informative video on growing and planting sweet potatoes slips!! Thank you!! I used the whole potato in soil to grow slips. I have one question..after planting the slips in a large container what do you do with the running vines that overflow the container onto the ground as they grow? I have a small area in my yard and I’m concerned about that. This is my first year growing sweet potatoes also.im excited!!
i live in the uk. i just bought some purple sweet potatoes online. i really needed your tutorial. but worried it's too cold here. worth a try anyway. i can try grow it indoors
Best Video yet for complete information. ❤ But I just can't see the savings in having to buy all those bags of soils! How did they grow in the Old days with just the land?
Great video, well done! Thank you. I'm in Florida 9b and I tried my hand at purple sweet potatoes last spring and I had a few fields of sweet potato greens. But I only got 1 decent potato from each starter. I planted them in the ground, mostly wanting the ground cover, but looking forward to some purple sweet potatoes. Can it take cuttings from those 10'-15' long runners and root them into their own plants and get potatoes down the road? They have all rooted themselves, but the roots didn't go more than a couple inches. That's actually what I'm being told caused such a low yield, because I allowed them to take root. If so I have thousands of starters for next season if that would work. I just don't want to spend another season with unrealistic expectations. Thank you and anyone else in advance for a response.
Very informative. I'm planning on planting sweet potatoes for the first time ever. I'm in Tennessee, so we have about the same weather. Thanks for sharing.
God bless you for all your info...where did you get the big plastic containers that you just added all the soil to then added your morning glory plants? Your garden is beautiful TY
I tried sweet potato got nearly discouraged as some slips wilted. However good thing is they are usually good in number or try to have several to make up for loss. What I also read is to cut of the part on the slip between the tuber and slip at the bottom, which helped a lot.
Woooooo Sweet taters! Haha 😂 Y’all it was super hot filming this one! So much planned so much support Me and Justin love you all! Become a plant person! 🌱
😍 Beautiful! Thank you for the video! 🙏 💡 I’ve seen someone do experiment on the number of plants in a container. As it turns out the fewer plants in one container, the bigger tuber. ❓ What would you do if you slips began to rot in water? (Small already shooting) Can I cut the rotten part off and keep them in water to grow more roots/ cut off the rotten part and insert into some soil? 🧐
Great video! Thank you!! I’m a late into starting my vegetable garden but was wondering if it’s worth it to start the process to get the slips this late in May if I’m in zone 8a. I look forward to learning more from your channel. :)
Hi. Nice video! You explained and demonstrated the process clearly and concisely. What kind of of sweet potato/es would you suggest growing to reproduce Terra krinkle chip sweet potato chips? What kind do you think they are using? I was unable to find the answer.
After the abrupt “used cars salesman‘s“ start… I was pleasantly surprised when you settle down into a delightfully authentic tutorial. I’ve subscribed because I genuinely learned a lot….& then you ended with the “Used car salesman shtik “. Being bona fide is better. Go with that, You don’t need a gimmick…you’re good enough🌞
I’ve started your technique with the sweet potato, I was concerned I wasn’t going to get any slips, but I got them, now they are in the jars rooting, and I will be planting them soon…what I’ve seen in other videos is how people let the vines grow wild, I don’t like that mess..lol, when they get to that wild stage, can I cut them back?
Coming from Asian country, I love sweet potato leaves. This is my first year to plant slips from water. Can I plant it even though it has short and few roots..Bought sweet potato (yam leaves) from a Chinese store..

Awesome video. As prices for Groceries go up you are seeing more interest in home Gardening. Thank you for sharing these great methods.
You should do a video on building a raised bed and what type of soil to add to it from start to finish 😃👍
Can’t wait to try this
You can put a square water bottle with the top cut off. Put the bottle over the plant and you make like a terrarium and keeps in some moisture
Great job Justin!

My problem is the vines get sooo long! Can you keep the vines shorter by pruning the ends and still be able to get good tubers?
I remember getting a plant in 5th grade, planting it in my grandparents back yard and my god those potatoes were massive
