    Mark I was laying here watching this video just waiting for you to make it around there to that sweet potato bed back there brother and man they have really taken on a tremendous growth spurt since your last update on them! That bed is completely full and overshadowed by the foliage of the plants! Pretty soon you won't even be able to see the planter that y'all are growing them in, they look great man, deep green leaves and those new purple growth tips are peeking out everywhere. They are definitely loving the location and the soil that you and Tina planted them in. Are you looking to harvest around August, I heard you mention that they were at about the mid season point now.

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  5 років тому +1

      Oh yes, we let them run a couple years back (not last year, and we should have) and they will be to the point you cannot tell what color the planter is... It is crazy... Letting the runners root down goes back to feeding the main root base, but they also leave small tubers wherever they root, so we had them coming up in the lawn the following spring... ahahaha Hey, while I got your attention, I was gonna suggest to you a cheap bug zapper and a timer to run it only at night... Many common pests like the cabbage looper worm are the product of nocturnal moths (not pollinators) and you can have at them with a bug zapper... Ours are solar and located in each of the chicken runs so I forget about them as part of our insect control plan... You can also attract song birds and other pest eaters to your yard when they come in the morning for fried snacks... In any case, food for thought.... Thanks so much for your support brother, it is much appreciated !

    • @TheGreenThumbGardeningChannel
      @TheGreenThumbGardeningChannel 5 років тому

      That definitely sounds like a plan to me, they are fairly cheap here at my local garden center, and the pest issues here are getting worse and worse as the season progresses, thanks Mark!

    Hi, thanks for the garden tour, it’s beautiful and very organized, I like that. I’m wondering about how the broccoli that you cut off is doing it’s been three months now, did they grow up and produce anything? Are you familiar with the Mittlider Method of gardening? Your garden reminds me of that with it being so organized and growing so well. How often do you fertilize your garden and how do you do it? What state or zone are you in? It seems like you have a long growing season, I’m in Michigan and it’s not that long for us, I think the last frost in the spring is May 12th and the first frost in the fall is September 28, four month to get grow everything. I think I’ve bothered you long enough, I’ll look at your play list, maybe my questions have already been answered, thank you for your service to our beautiful country and also for the great videos that you and Tina produce. Sincerely, Cindy

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  4 роки тому +1

      LOL... The broccoli came out great... I think we do have a video on that... Not a Mittlider fan, but perhaps I do not understand it well enough... We feed weekly... Our main feed is the Jobes Veg and Tom in the red bag at most Lowes... We are in E. TN, but the zone charts vary... Our season is long enough we can often grow back to back sweet corn...

    The sweet potatoes look good. I didn't know how to identify Japanese beetle damage. Where did you get your beetle traps? You may have said but I don't recall. You and the missus have a blessed day.

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  5 років тому +1

      Heyas Lynne ! Yeah, Japanese beetles can really be a pain... I like to catch them early... I actually just learned that it was them skeletonizing leaves just a few years back when they tore into some wild raspberries and did that to the leaves (it was obvious they had done it by the number of them present) so I did some research... I get the traps from Amazon and they are the Spectricide brand... Each comes with 2 bags so that is nice... Be sure to hang them so the wind blows the lure smell over the area you are trying to protect... And put it a good distance away because it may bring them in from other areas too... You can likely save a little money just buying the lure, then stand the handle of a bucket up and put the lure on it, and an inch of soapy water in the bottom... Not sure you'd even need the soap... Then the drown beetles would make for good chicken food, or fertilizer.... LOL

It is probably because we maintain pesticide free flower gardens here on the property just for the bees (thus our name) and Tina covers the porch in flowers every Spring in her planters... I am in and out of the garden so often with the tractor / tiller that I am afraid nothing would last there long (in the gardens)... That and we usually have something blooming in the garden too... LOL But I do like the look of a cottage garden with flowers... Just dont give Tina any more ideas... ahahahaha I am the one who pays the price... LOL

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  5 років тому

      We water every morning... And yes, we feed 2 parts bone to 1 part blood weekly from mid season to harvest now... Or you can use that Jobes organic Veg and Tomato food they sell at Lowes...

    • @trishsmith2811
      @trishsmith2811 5 років тому

      this is my first year growing sweet potatoes and it seems very confusing. I just heard on another channel that if you water and fertilize too often the vines won’t make tubers! They’ll just grow vines. I don’t live in sweet potato country (the south) so all my information comes from UA-cam or the internet, but I think I can still grow them successfully. I just get frustrated because of all the contrary opinions. We don’t usually have a hot summer mostly 70’s with a few 80’s sprinkled in but we do have a long growing season with frost not happening until December. I just top dressed them with some hard wood potash mixed with compost. They seemed to really take off after that. I hope it was the right thing to do. I feel like I’m just guessing so thank you very much for all the information you share!

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  5 років тому

      Not to worry, you are doing just fine... We feed once a week BUT the blood and bone meal are not as rich as the compost and wood ash you amended with... So you will not need to add anything for a good while, at least until they start to show they are in need (listless, wavy leaf surface, slow tip growth, etc)... But you should be fine... Any sweet potato plant will form tubers though... You just have to leave them long enough... Cut back the nitrogen from here out... That will turn them out of the growth state and into the "storage" state where they built tubers to last the winter... // I know it is confusing with the varied info out there... We are working to be a trusted source of information for new gardeners so they enjoy their gardens rather than struggle and give up... And we let our results speak for themselves with our harvest videos in the Gardening playlist linked at the end of this video... Glad to try to help... Just let me know what I can do for you... But most importantly, enjoy your garden !

    • @trishsmith2811
      @trishsmith2811 5 років тому

      ;thank you so much for taking the time to clear that up for me! I have more sweet potatoes on the hot side of the garage and I’m anxious to see how they do as well. They are in huge 1/2 water barrels so I know they’ll have plenty of room. I love gardening! It’s so fun to grow something totally different than anyone else is growing or that I’ve ever grown. I’m still trying to understand interplanting and what goes where and when. You have helped me learn about succession planting and inter planting. I have a lot of onions just starting to bulb so I hope I can plant another crop when I harvest them. Maybe a fall crop of something. So thank you again!

Do you pick any beans before you do that (like a week or so beforehand)? Or do you just let them grow to a certain point then cut them off? Also, Im thinking of planting brassicas after my beans. Do you guys grow broccoli from seed? I feel like you’ve covered that but I cant remember. Thank you!

      We wait until the beans are in full production and do a smaller pick first, then they are all starting from the same point... Then they grow out their main "flush" of beans, and that is what we pull up the plants to harvest... We could leave them for another small picking, but it is more productive for us to plant Fall beans right back and double up the crop... // We do plant Fall brassicas... If you click the link at the end of this video, it will take you to our gardening playlist... In there, you will find a video called Planting Fall Broccoli that will explain how we do it...

      BT... It is considered organic and garden safe... Very effective... Just google Cabbage Looper (the worms) and BT together...

    A ground hogs got a hold to one of my raised beds with sweet potatoes they ate a lot of the leaves but it was a few left on them so instead of pulling them I just left them hoping that theyll keep growing you think I'll still get some sweet potatoes and the plant will still live? Dont know what to do to keep the ground hog away I put repels all around them and I've even put hair from the hair brush into the raised bed and I put new plants in the bed and the ground hog got them again I'm just gonna see if theyll grow and if I can I'm gonna shoot that ground hog lol

      You may just have to trap him or shoot him (I hate to say that, but they can be destructive)... He should be giving you some indication of the direction he is traveling... If you put up a couple pieces of fence to funnel him to an opening at the bed, that is where you would put your trap... Otherwise, all I can really think of is to shoot him... They are like a watch, and he is coming the same time every day, so that should be easy enough to narrow down... I am sorry the options are sort of limited with them...

    Last year my first time they came out real skinny what did I not do right?

    • @BumbleBeeJunction

      Usually either too crowded or too much nitrogen in the soil... Crowding is pretty easy to fix... But when sweet potatoes have nitrogen they grow big tops and no potatoes... Focus on spacing, and bone meal (phosphorus) rather than nitrogen...

    What does it mean when you say they bolted?

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  3 роки тому

      Bolting is when a plant prematurely goes to seed... Usually caused by heat...

    How many pounds of potatoes do you normally harvest

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  5 років тому

      That tank usually produces between 100 and 150 lbs of sweet potatoes... This should be a good year... We have a couple harvest videos in our Gardening playlist (click my logo to find the playlists).... Thank you for watching !

    Where do you buy the Japanese Beetle traps?

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  5 років тому +2

      I bought ours on Amazon... I picked up 6 traps and each trap comes with 2 bags... But then I ordered several spare bags... I dont think we will need them now, but I was not sure how bad the beetles would be this year....

    I 've planted bell peppers and I notice that the stems are turning a dark color is this a sign of a disease.

      @BumbleBeeJunction  5 років тому

      It is really hard to tell not knowing what type they are... One thing you can do is make sure it is able to use all of the nutrients in the soil by spreading a little Epsom salt around them and watering it in deeply....
