Container Garden Secret Super Soil Mix

  • Container garden secret super soil is our own potting soil mix of soil amendments that we use for gardening in our bucket garden and containers. It is a blend of peat moss, perlite, composted cow manure, garden soil, sodium polyacrylate / diaper crystals, pelleted lime, Epsom salt, bone meal, blood meal, oyster shell calcium, and boron. You can make an organic soil mix from this basic recipe with very few substitutions. We fill, and later top dress, our buckets and containers with this once a year and allow the nutrients to work their way down to the plants roots over time. When planting, we plant or direct sow into this mix with no further amendments needed other than weekly feeding the bucket and container gardens, usually with a water soluble fertilizer. This mix provides everything else, including nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and boron. It also contains a number of organic materials that will break down over time and extend the fertility of the soil beyond that stated in the base ingredients. This is similar to our Raised Bed Garden Secret Super Soil Mix but is adapted to be closer to a potting type soil. This is NOT a How To, it is a How We Do. And we let our results in the vegetable garden speak for themselves.

Hello from West Tennessee... recently widowed, you ARE AN ANSWER TO MY PRAYERS! Thank you both for giving me the knowledge and confidence to continue with what my husband and I always did together. I just didn't think I could continue alone, but I know I can do this by myself!!

I have learned that people judge. They want to know how things work in YOUR house......but what they should do is worry about what goes on in THEIR house. I cant make assumptions from what I see ....I only see what You want me to see.....and with that being said........God Bless you, forget the comments, and please keep the videos coming!

Not cool when people want to judge other people and others relationships. Like in my relationship my hubby has been criticized by family for doing our laundry at times and my hubby just laughs and says to them only I and my wife decide how we run our marriage and no one else’s opinion matters. Don’t pay attention to people that don’t see the bigger picture of your marriage. You guys are a team, and a strong one. And teams rely on each other , so if one falls I’ll, the other can still carry on with everyday chores. Watching Tina mow the lawn or do the planting or carry and mix bags of dirt, makes me so proud of her. Tiny Tina is a strong independent woman, with a loving husband that allows her to be the tuff cookie she want to be. Sorry this is long, but you know I love you guys and it upsets me that someone may of had the nerve to try to hurt you. Stay safe and much love to you both 🤗

But she will tell you the same thing in reverse... It takes both of us... And on bad days, we can cover for each other... But I hate to explain all that on every video... LOL

Tina is so cute stomping around in the dirt. I used to do that all the time when I was younger. Loved the dirt in my bare feet. LOL Our good neighbor would use his john deere & till up our garden & stir in fertilizer as well. My hubby & I would lay down our heavy duty plastic. Then we cut small holes as far apart as we needed for certain kinds of plants. The plants grew in abundance since the soil stayed so moist. We drug out extended hose out to it to keep things watered. We also had to put up an electric fence all the way around it, about, just guessing, 20 x 80ft. We had to do the fence due to so many deer eating our plants. Then my sister, Mom, & I would can in the fall. Now I'm retired caring for my 2 & only small grandchildren while parents work & too tired too keep up with it. But loving my life with them. God Bless you guys.

I love your videos and your relationship, it's nice to see a marriage that is not defined by 'typical stereotype' duties. I am married to an over-the-road trucker who is only home 34 hrs a week. I manage our twenty acre homestead, the twenty-five laying chickens, 50 meat chicken, 10 ducks, and 5 beef cattle and 1/4 acre earth and 17 raised bed garden on a daily basis. I used your 'super soil ' to top dress my raised beds last year with fabulous success and have top dressed them again this year, hoping for another great year. I only have one negative comment about, Tina please make sure you place your garden rake tines down when not in use, this from someone who learned years ago what happens when you accidently step on a rake with the tines up--my head still hurts every time I see someone leave the tines up. The videos are geared toward struggling new gardeners, with the hope that they will stick with gardening after some initial success. As their skills grow, they will naturally gravitate towards the more advanced methods that meet their goals (as you obviously have). We lose far too many new gardeners to the initial struggle though. I will simply trust you understand.

Thanks so much! This will surely be helpful not only financially (I hope) but to help my children garden again. We used to have beautiful in ground gardens but have since moved and no longer have the space to do that. This seems like the perfect alternative. I did a cost breakdown on our original Super Soil video, which you can find by searching for: Bumblebee Junction Super Soil For Raised Beds... Yes, you can reuse the soil... We mix it with some fresh, or add some Jobes Tom and Veg, but you can definitely reuse it... And yes, we weekly feed... Most often with the Jobes I just mentioned...

Hi guys. Thanks to my wife I have just found your video's First thing first thank you for your service both of you. You said during your video that this mix may not be enough for your buckets. How did that turn out. Also how do you figure the ratios for smaller or larger batches. We are just getting into the cooler days so I am planning on doing a lot of prep work for our spring gardenBeing in Florida I don't have a lot of time so any help is greatly appreciated. If you are prepping beds, you might find our Super Soil more useful... It is in our gardening playlist, or just search for Raised Bed Garden Super Soil and it should pop up... As for proportions, it would be easy to double or triple... Smaller batches would be more difficult, but its likely possible to cut the batch in half anyway....

I cannot thank you enough for all you have taught me. Your Raised Bed Garden Secret Super Soil Mix is like magic soil!! I'm making more this season for the rest of our beds and dedicating one bed to your carrot soil. Will the carrot soil be good for beets too? Also, for a dahlia garden, how would you tweak the SSSM? And one more question I'd be so grateful if you had time to answer: our tomatoes tasted terrible last year, any ideas why? They were also planted in the SSSM. Maybe they were too crowded, I NEVER expected them to grow like magic beans. They were huge, it was a jungle!

    • @BumbleBeeJunction
      @BumbleBeeJunction  4 роки тому

Yes, the SS for carrots will also work for beets, though beets can handle some nitrogen, so dont be afraid to feed them once they are established... For Dahlias, I would throw in a few doses of bone meal (say a handful, a few days apart and water in, a few times) to get the best bloom I could.... I am not sure on the tomatoes other than sometimes good soil lets the tomato be all it can be - in which case, they may not taste the same as they once did... I really dont know...

Very thankful for all the info you’ve shared. I’ve watch many of your videos recently and the Super Soil video many times. I have a decent sized raised beds garden in our backyard. I’ve used the Back to Eden method in the past but have not had very good results the past few years... hardly any produce. At some points with all the insects I’ve wanted to take a flame torch to the whole thing.😆... When you mentioned the high nitrogen and adding bone meal this made since after you explained. Really considering adding this to our existing soil but I do have a question. I also have a similar chicken run similar to what you have, we put hay, garden scraps and leaves during Fall into our chicken run. They turn it into compost and I dig it up and put this into the garden. Will this have any effect on this mix or can I skip a step? Thank you ~ Eva

Heyas ! Thanks so much for watching and your kind words ! For flowers, I would take a look at the original Super Soil video - they will require a denser / richer soil to really show off... In ground, for a refresher, I like a bale of peat with two bags of black kow, and then mix in some Jobes Tomato and Vegetable fertilizer... For potatoes I would look at our vids on setting up the sweet potato bed, which I would do the same for regular potatoes... Strawberries do really well in a bed topped with peat moss, but then planted with a handful of black cow for each plant... I hope that helps...

    Hello Mark and Tina,
Having one of those days. I am mixing up SUPER SOIL . I make a half of a batch at a time, useing my 10 CF wheelbarrel to transport to my raised beds. I am planting so late this year. This old body can only do so much at a time. LOL. Layered the first 4 ingredients and can't find my pelleted lime. So I used a 1/2 cup of wood ash instead. I wasn't sure how much to put in or even if it was a good idea. Finished the last of my layering and started to mix. It's kinda windy here today. All of a sudden I started smelling flowers coming from my mix. What is going on here???? Well last week I had my husband pick me up a small bag of epsom salt at the grocery store, that was it. He got me lavender sented epsom salts.
I have 2 4x4 beds left to fill. So , tell me if lavender carrots or lavender beets would taste better? I refuse to dump the soil, so since I pickel mostly all the beets, lavender beets it will be.
Hope everyone gets a good laugh. I let you know how they tasted. If I haven't ruined all of them, maybe I discovered a new flavoring mix.
    Happy gardening to all. Shelly
