    We're back 🎉 We've had a busy few weeks at our day jobs and working hard to save up our funds for what's coming up next on the land, so we hope you enjoy this video! This is also our first full vlog using our new mic's, so we hope it's improved our audio quality for you all 😁

      I thought the audio was bugged, but it seems like the mic is only audible on the right channel. so when i watched this video only with my left earbud, the voices were muted.
      Everything else: very nice vlog

      We realised when we were editing we set the mic balance up wrong during filming 😂 just glad we got sound and no wind interference like we used to get on our gropro 😂 all a learning curve

    • @TheErador
      @TheErador Рік тому +1

      Oops. I had that problem on another channel where they just got the rode wireless go mics, where you have a choice of either splitting the input so each transmitter is on a separate channel (i.e. mic 1 is left and mic 2 is right) which gives you flexibility in the edit room to tweak each mics relative volume separately - but they hadn't duplicated each channel for stereo, so like you say you got nothing in one earbud, or the alternative is to send a merged signal so both mics are recorded to L & R. Easier to edit but harder/impossible to fix any balance issues. Anyway audio sounds good here, but i didn't use earphones today so was blissfully unaware of balance issues ❤

    An absolutely inspiring journey you've embarked upon. Transforming abandoned land into a sustainable, off-grid homestead is no small feat, and the commitment you've shown is commendable. It's evident that you've invested not just financial resources but also an immense amount of hard work, time, and emotional energy. By taking the bold step of selling everything for this dream, you've given many of us the courage to consider sustainable living as a feasible and rewarding lifestyle. Your video serves as both an educational guide and a source of inspiration. Looking forward to witnessing the continued growth of your homestead. Best wishes.

    Well done on all the raised beds - it's so satisfying when you start to get an actual harvest, isn't it? A couple of tips on watering to make the most of it: if you water in the evening, it gives the water time to soak in before the heat of the day starts to evaporate it. And try to water at the base of plants rather than just from above. Water droplets on the leaves can just evaporate, and in strong sun, they can act like lenses and scorch the leaves. Good luck!

    Garden coming along very nicely. When your beans start getting very big and too tough to eat leave them to go to seed and dry out - you can then use the seed next year to have new plants. If you have far too many seeds once dried you can cook them and eat them like kidney beans only they will be a lot bigger. They make a lovely tasting hummus too, albeit a strangely coloured one

    Rocket needs to be well watered to stop it bolting. Mint in its own pot. When u prep veg in kitchen, retain seeds, dry them if wet, plant them next spring. If buying seeds look out for disease resistant, eg carrot resistant to carrot fly

    Hi guys. When things get a bit to busy here is a small idea for the garden.
    Look at getting a rain water collection system. Build a water header butt with a pump on a timer to water the garden at set times. You can then add nutrients to the irrigation system to enhance the growth of the vegetables. This will reduce your workload to simply checking your garden is watered. It will stimulate better growth.
    Best of luck guys. 🙂

    Just a thought. When you are shovelling soil, wood chips, mulch or sand etc. from a heap - always operate from the ground level.
    Amongst other things it reduces the heap’s footprint but when the shovel slides in from below the material above it automatically falls down .
    By working from the top or part way up of a heap the shovel “bounces” against the edge of the stack.
    A lot less energy is used when working from below.
    Just try it!

    If you are getting a polytunnel, may I recommend "First Tunnels" we used one of their 12 feet wide tunnels at our community allotments. it was 35 feet long with double sliding doors at each end had twin roof supports and aluminium wind up air vents on one side, all for under £2000. well made and well worth every penny. Do not buy the cheap green plastic covered tunnels with poles that are only 1 inch dia. they are useless and will be wrecked in the first storm. The First Tunnel frame is 2 inch dia and sturdy as a rock...you could even rig a swing from the top of the arch and it would not move.
    I have no connection with First Tunnels...I am just a very happy customer.

    observations: 1. you need gloves for your workers. they work faster and safer when they aren't worrying about hurting their hands (they may not know this but now you do.) 2. also why on earth do you always park the delivery or take away truck so far from the site. you trying to get your steps in? you work way harder than you need to with all the to-ing and fro-ing. 3. you also need a hose. for watering. (yeah i know it's nice and relaxing to water with a watering can -right now. wait a while. it gets old fast!) 4. why such low fencing? when you're going to the work and expense of putting it in, why not at least 6 or even 8 ft? most dogs will just hop over that ilttle fence (or climb it) and it is absolutely no barrier to deer at all. that said, i do love what you are doing. excited every time for the new video to come out!

We’ve kept rescue battery hens for many years and one of the best devices we’ve used is the Chuxaway pop hole auto opener /closer. It’s run on batteries and you simply set the times you want the pop hole door to open in the morning and close at night. It saves you having to get up very early in the summer and having to shut them up each night. Also if you have an evening out you know that they are safely tucked away.

    H'guys for feeding chickens it is good to know that corn has calories however is poorly nutricious. It holds much omega 6 which is inflamatory. Grains the same thing. In the summer they absolutely do not need it if you can let them free range and give them scraps of your own cooking or vegtable garden. The best in the world poultry meat and eggs you can have is letting them sort out their own food in bugs and young grasses, maybe some letuce, they love it. The biggest problem for healthy eggs are the inability to free range, foxes, ferrets and other predators. Good luck 👍

    Hi Jon & Emilie, I just started binge watching you two on your amazing journey and luv it's development thus far and can't wait to be up to date and see what else you've done. It is really rewarding doing stuff yourself - not fuss re numpty folk on youtubeland who critisize you - there will always be those folks that think its a show how to show instead of this is the way you two do it and learn on the go.... The veggie patch is great and like others here when I saw your mint in the bed I said too nope if you don't separate it into a large pot or grow bag you'll end up with it overtaking the bed as it's a mad bush and goes crazy everywhere.... Ps luv the hat.... just wanted to say hi from Debzs from Oz

    Brilliant progress. You might want to think about moving the mint and lemon balm to their own areas. Mint spreads like wild fire and will soon take over the raised bed. Lemon Balm ( my favourite ) from my experience is 'toxic' to other plants and you'll find they die back just to get away from it. 🤗🤗😎😎

    • @CampOutWest
      @CampOutWest  Рік тому

      Thanks Paul! The mint/lemon balm are in little pots in the raised beds actually, just placed on top, but thanks for the tip/advice! I didn't realise it could be toxic to other plants either so that's good to know!

    Wow, thats very expensive that Vegepod is £487 . You can make two 8 by 3 feet raised beds made from railway sleepers with two layers of sleepers on top of each other to give it more high for less than that.
    I have very similar with the space for the self watering ok you would need two to be the same sized of your one which i have but it was only two for €80. I have them a year now and they are standing up to everything so far.
    Its really looking fantastic you both got so much done i had to go back to see if i had missed a video.
    You can make a covering for the raised beds that comes off when not needed as we'll

      We saw them on the TV show shark tank before, so it was so great to get to try them out for ourselves. We can see why they are so popular, especially for people that have limited space/no garden or mobility issue. They are the only veg in the garden that isn't currently under attack from bugs haha! We are loving having the garden so much, very pleased we decided to just go for it and plant, rather than wait for next season 🙂

    Please consider Aquaponics - its an eco microclimate based food and fish harvesting system made famous by Murray Hallam using recycled water based nutrients from fish waste which plants eat and cleans the water for reuse in a constantly cycled microclimate - feed fish, they poop and grow, plants grow off poop and clean water - you eat food and fish when grown, then restock… love your channel too guys ❤

    Lovely progress, nice to see you have chickens! We keep chickens too, but in our small back garden. Just a suggestion, get the biggest enclosed run you can afford if they are not going to be free ranged and also as you are very rural, you might want to consider digging in some galvanized mesh to stop you having a visit from a fox.
    Chickens are a gardener's friend (apart from they will eat everything 🤣)- Their manure is such an amazing fertilizer! Just make sure to leave it for a few months before using it as it can burn your plants 😅

    your is garden is looking great well done also the border fencing is a very good idea especially the double one with ditch When I worked on a farm in the sixties I think its called a mole plough which is a cylinder which used with a tractor you plough lines to the ditch creating drainage tunnels to the ditch have a word a farmer especially an arable farmer good luck

    • @joncampoutwest
      @joncampoutwest Рік тому

      The original plan with the fencing guys was we were going to use a mole plough from that drain all up the land but their tractor is huge and couldn't really do any straight runs with it on our land with all the trees and obstacles. Going to do a series of french drains now with a small excavator, drop in perforated pipe and clean gravel into the ditches as a means to direct to the exhaust ditch we've made
