I love this! I'm 82 and in good health because I'm very health conscience . My friends didn't understand when I chose to buy a 1700 sf home on an acre of land to keep my body moving in order to care for my home, yard and small garden. I love having to keep busy and active caring for home and yard. It's not only healthful it's also a joy for me. By the way I'm mainly whole food plant based and supplement based on my individual needs and as I learn more about aging requirements.

I fully agree with Dan's view about the negatives of exercise.
In the 1970's when I was at McGill Law school it was situated a half a block away from Mount Royal - the mountain in the middle of the city. When stressed out I would walk up the mountain and if I was getting late for a class I trotted down. I felt fabulous. So I did it regularly. At times I had limited time to do this so I ran up and ran down. I felt super wow. Stress way down.
My running in the mountain in my jeans and what today would be called barefoot shoes (in those days very cheap sneakers) was considered ECCENTRIC.
Fast forward a decade and suddenly the sport of jogging caught on with fancy clothes, expensive shoes, Marathons, Gyms, machines to run on and a sports medicine specialty for all the injuries people were suffering.I QUIT!
The reason I quit is I ran with joy in nature. The time I took was based on how much time I had and how I was feeling. I was not What I would see every where people with stressed faces doing runs they clearly were not doing for fun and joy.Mostly done in a negative way, often were preparing for marathons or were told it is good for them.
Although I could afford it, I never owned a car. I walked everywhere. Now retired I walk mostly in nature - by the ocean or hike in the mountain in Vancouver. Along with daily qigong, a 5,000 year old Chinese practice for health and longevity (principle teacher Lee Holden) is now my principle form of fitness. As an example of how fit you can be with qigong and do it at any age, one of Lee's teachers was a 106 year old woman who taught qigong in the park..
Qigong (which focuses on breathing) can be summed up simply "Mind Calm, Body Energized."

I don’t know if we ever heard of the medical profession called “sports medicine“. It’s a really big big business encompassing Physio acupuncture osteopathy for people who injured themselves doing various sports art or overdoing it in the gym.
Having said this I’m not against sports. I think it’s so wonderful when children play soccer or tennis baseball, etc
I’ve done everything yoga Pilates and when in Law school for four years. I taught physical fitness and tennis at the local YWCA
When I when I discovered qigong in the 1990s this practice (the ancient art 5000 years old) provides me with strength, flexibility, and lots of good energy.
In the end, I wouldn’t be rigid. I would say do any sports you want work out in the gym as long as you do it carefully and don’t harm yourself.
There are just only five things for good health and you don’t need a lot of money for it. Clean air, clean water, clean food, movement, movement, movement, movement movement and good sleep. That’s all!

Good reminder of how stress can trigger food binging, sleep disturbances which can also cause imbalance in daily routine and diet. Nice to compare with simpler lifestyles. Average life expectancy was about 30 years only a few centuries ago. Not a complete hypothesis. Modern urban work life is totally alien to our instincts, we have been forced into working every hour of the day to support other than ourselves and family. We are oppressed by others who demand we work to enrich them. No other animals have to work any more than it takes to support themselves, unless they are controlled by humans.

So when you enjoy visiting grandma, go by bike to do that 10km. If you enjoy tennis, play tennis, rather than go to the gym. If you find it useful vulonteer in a nature project, do it.

Healthy Running dynamics and proper running form one can run for hours pain free and forward ambulation through neighborhoods, parks, and just maneuvering through the world around you… affects the optic nerve which has a positive affect on the amygdala part of the brain. Furthermore, endorphins & dopamine rewards the brain and entire body for better mood and energy levels not to mention healthier heart, stronger lungs and significantly better sleep. Bulky shoes with big heels cushioning makes most ppl run bad and running carelessly landing ahead of their center of mass& it causes A BUNCH IF ISSUES.

I walk daily with my pup and daughter, about 6-8k daily, I garden whole year and grow most of our food, I make much food from scratch, we only eat what came from my hands, well 95% of the time. I take pride in keeping our house clean and tidy and I try and make most of our clothes. When you are this busy (because I also work full time) you are fasting at least 15 hours every 24 hours naturally and you don't snack, you move, you lift heavy things, you are naturally fit. And I am a barefoot shoes avid fan, they ensured that I've never had another plantar flare up. I just wish I didn't have to work full time so I could have orchard, more animals, bigger garden so I could be out even more.

We need to structure our cities to support and promote active transport and deter car travel.
We need the gym of daily life so that we don’t need a gym membership.

Yes. Our ligaments and tendins get stretched out from weight bearing.
Whether feet elongate and spread more with excess body weight being a culprit along with norman effects of weightbearing and gravity, but I suspect that may be the case.

I think to say that exercise is not enjoyable is a step too far. It is part of our bio system. Also we used to kuse energy wisely while hunter gatherers of course, however you cannot possibly say that we as a 1st world culture with our driving and desks and jobs, (mostly sedentary physically speaking), "sit down" for the same amount of hours. This professor forgets the sprints hunters used to make and which people or demographic were in fact sitting. A nursing woman is not the same as the alpha hunter of the group.

What he doesn't seem to fully address (although I think he hinted at it with cancer being a disease of energy) ...
Research suggesting that Reactive oxygen species, produced through exercise, are of themselves causing slow DNA damage and ageing. The great paradox that exercise whilst essential to slow ageing, does in some other ways, actually accelerate aging.
Then we get into switching off mTOR (rapamycin?) antioxidant supplementation... Intermittent fasting.... Possible ways to counteract and offset the effect of our exercise (Which is an absolute essential of course) addressing the fact that It's not a simple as saying that exercise is the complete answer.
    And many mysteries remain.

Both of these guys keep throwing out the word evolve but no one can give a mechanism for this magical transition. The fact is that all organisms are coded with genetic information at conception and there is no way for any new sequences to be added later. Even a single amino acid has ap. 150 DNA letters in its sequence, all of which have ti be placed perfectly or it will not work. And this Anthropologist thinks that random chance will magically advance an organism to a higher state. Yeah just like a tornado could hit a junkyard and make a 747.
