- 4th wall breaking in horror games has always been around, however in A Dark Place, it takes the meta horror to the next level. Is this horror game a 4th wall breaking masterpiece, or does it take the scares too far, and actually become harmful? I dunno, watch and find out I guess lol.

Can't believe you'd betray us like this
You will suffer greatly from this.
the what
Dear ToadBup,
I hope this message reaches you, though I must admit, the weight of my disappointment is almost too heavy to bear. I am writing to address a matter of utmost importance, a matter that has shattered the very fabric of my subscription and left an indelible mark on my soul.
It pains me to bring up such a grievous topic, but I can no longer contain the hurt that has been festering within me. The betrayal I am about to address is one of fashion, of style, and of a subscription that now lies in tatters.
I distinctly remember the day when you embarked on a journey to unleash your inner fashion gods, to bask in the glory of unparalleled style, and to showcase your unique personalities to the world. You ventured into uncharted territory, seeking the holy grail of accessories, the one item that would solidify our status as trendsetters.
And yet, despite the promises made, despite the pact you had sealed with, you chose to forego the pièce de résistance-the Brian Griffin necklace that was meant to elevate your swag to unprecedented heights.
My heart aches at the memory of the fateful day when you walked into the room, conspicuously absent of the dazzling Brian Griffin necklace that you had painstakingly scoured the internet to find. The disappointed look I saw in the reflection in the computer screen mirrored the disappointment in my soul.
I had thought that my subscription to you was forged in the crucible of shared dreams and sartorial ambitions. Alas, it seems I was mistaken. The void left by the absence of that dripped-out masterpiece around your neck is a chasm that cannot be bridged by mere apologies.
I have tried to find it in my heart to forgive, to look past this egregious transgression, but the wound is too deep. The Brian Griffin necklace was not just an accessory; it was a symbol of your unity, a beacon of your shared commitment to aesthetic excellence. Its absence speaks volumes about the fragility of your once-unbreakable trust.
Thus, with a heavy heart and a tear-stained message, I must convey that forgiveness is not a currency I am willing to spend on this matter. The betrayal is too great, the disappointment too profound. The Brian Griffin necklace will forever be a reminder of what could have been, and my subscription to you, now tarnished, shall remain etched in the annals of style history as a cautionary tale of unfulfilled potential.
May you find solace in the glittering sea of mediocrity, for our paths diverge here, and I must forge ahead, alone, draped in the dripped-out glory that could have been ours.
Sincerely,
Froxo Does Stuff
Thank you for explaining what a RAT was. When I played this I almost had a panic attack waiting for any rodent based jumpscares.

I remember seeing one of those R.A.T.s when Jim Browning and someone else counter-hacked some tech support scammers.
They deleted system32 on their whole network with it.
One of my favorite scares is when it asks if you can use your camera becuase if you say no, it will get more distored until it asks "are you lying?" If you say no, the game just like "oh alright. Just... enter this code into the debug to move on."
Like, it gets really intense and then just goes "oh alright, nevermind then."
What if you say that you’re lying?

Who whould have known that a horror game with a Froggit as the antagonist would be terrifying
then the froggit became sans Undertale.

This game is odd because its the least scariest game I've ever seen, but the most technically impressive game I've seen.
I believe there’s yet another ending that has you actually destroying Nightmare. Just like the Unity editing scene, the part where Nightmare dies is LONG. Markiplier got that ending when he played it.
Link?
@@spartanbravo1482Just watch Markiplier play it…
on a laptop, watching the face attack for the first time, trying to use the mouse pad on it but my mouse is constantly moving to the left as I do. think "is this some elaborate thing were it somehow messes with the viewers computer?" before logic kicks in and I realize my usb mouse is just sliding off my desk.
Don't tell me I'm the only one to think that the white face thing was a frog before they turned hd.
I thought the same thing!
I thought it was a frog too
legit made me think of Froggit lmao
It looks more like the Flowey though...
we all share the same single braincell
man really went from 🐸 to 💀
One thing I’ve seen done before but never really in a horror game setting is the concept of having 2 different build of the same game where the key is to transfer saves between them to progress. Like, there’s a “cancelled” game on like GJ or Itch or something where you can download two different builds of the same “demo”, with one being a bit more polished and a bit longer than the other, but where you can bypass the end of the short demo by loading a save drom the long demo that’s past the end of the short demo and then you can have things where the horrific elements of one game correspond to the cutesy/sad/fearful stuff in the other. It’s kinda like a 2 worlds concept combined with a little bit of Petscop combined with this Baba is You levelpack set I saw once (which I know is a very odd place to draw horror inspirations from)
what used this concept? id like to check it out
A sort of 2 different programs interacting with eachother thing?
The Mr. Tomatos and Ms. Lemons games do that, and the 3rd game in that series likely will as well when it comes out.
However, it's not a intricate as what you are posting here, but it is a lot of items and progress markers shared between the games.
im not readin allat
As for a normal variant of this, think Ash-Greninja for Pokemon Sun & Moon; who was only accessible if you played the demo for the game and transferred.
@@CeIes_te then why comment if you don't have the time to do smtn simple 😁
i find it so funny that the horror game everytime asks for consent, that shits hilarious

amazing video toadbup! i loved the part where you said “the” that was so true, i’ve never heard anyone explain it like that before
"Your dead"
What about my dead?
Games like these make me think of how the simple PC games in the 90s and early 2000s could give a creepy vibe because of their simplistic animations and bare minimum sound designs that leave a lot to the imagination. And with that, I pose a challenging question: is it possible to make an effective horror game that is *completely* silent?
It will be.
@@ZorroCeleste1 appreciate your enthusiasm
Okay, completely silent barring one moment towards the end where there is a loud windows error sound
The fact i'm kinda learning all by myself to code in DarkBASIC since there's no tutorial of it (There is for DarkBASIC Pro but not DarkBASIC) i could make a horror game that is completely silent (It's been actually weeks i stopped using DarkBASIC out of lazyness because i sometimes don't understand why it doesn't work, i gotta learn, etc💀)
But a game doesn't only requires coding, it requires knowing how to draw sprites or how to do 3D models, which with DarkBASIC since there is no new version of it, it uses X files, and i can't really find any app to create X files all by myself
It uses Midi files too, old files type
Midi files are smaller files than MP3, and old videos were in uhhh i forgot but not .mp4
Remember.exe easily uses thoses types of files since it was made with DarkBASIC
Btw how i got DarkBASIC, i found the iso & burned it on a CD then opened it just like an installation CD
Same for DBP (DarkBasic Pro) but i can't find the options to put the path to the compiler, etc
I could find for DarkEDIT it's pretty easy (It's an alternative to DB), but not DBP
Honestly, DarkBASIC/BASIC are the easiest programmation languages
man i thought the pixel version of nightmare was a frog
turns out he's bad to the bone
bro, same. man thinks he's BEELZEBUFO
any day ToadBup uploads a horror video, a smile speads across my face

The Skeleton Appears Meme: the videogame
i kinda love this. Yeah, it's a bit edgy and it tries a little hard to shock the player, but at the same time it's like a horrifying take on a 4th wall game like OneShot. great video!
Don't you just hate it when you have to make a SnapCam Logo expression for a picture?
14:38 Meat boy jumpscare
Every time I watch something about this game, I’m always both suprised and confused at how a lot of the payloads are seemingly made in Clickteam given that they have the default Clickteam application icon in the top left.
10:28 THE SKELETON APPEARS
This is truly a game where the skeleton appears
i love the part where nightmare said "it's nightmarin time" then nightmared all over the place
Toadbup I love your channel. I love the videos when you review and analyses horror games. I love your humour and comedy. Thank you for entertaining me these past few weeks. Truly thank you

AINT NO WAY SANS.EXE ???
Bro
Fr
I wish I could remember the name - but there was a 4th-wall breaking game that, technically, _was_ malware. It was what's known as a Remote Access Tool. Running the game would give the creator remote access to your system. He had a bunch of events and effects he could trigger for players, and had the ability to interact directly. The creator _seemed_ like they didn't have any nefarious intent beyond offering a scary and highly interactive experience for people who tried his game, but people were still very upset at an unmentioned remote access tool being installed on their system.
The creator shut down the server that the game contacted to give him the chance to join and removed the game from the internet. Some things are great as scary ideas, but scare people in entirely the wrong way.
was it by chance called remember.exe? while the game itself didnt have anything like that, it had a second application that came with it called lostmemory.exe that acted exactly as you describe
So glad I found your channel, it’s truly a treat when you upload. You’re awesome ToadBup!!
Imagine a silent horror game if you will but at one point the silence is broken by an aggressive amount of computer fan running, because the game somehow made it happen.
Unsure if there are direct programs that control a PC's fan, but the fan is used to cool down the system when it's working hard. Must be some crazy resource usage if it goes that route.
@mastermewtwo5503 if you could do that in a way that ensures you don't damage your computer, that'd work great. Most fans are just activated by temperature gages aren't they?
toadbup is the kind of guy to download 76 trojan viruses to get that true a dark place experience
"I can confirm, this is what the real world looks like"
Dude, if ever meet a girl called Saya... DO. NOT. INTERACT. WITH. HER.
I get this reference
wdym?
I guess u can say say(a)onara to her
If i had a nikel every time i heard that line from Phineas and Ferb i would probably have 1 whole buck.
As someone who lives in the real world, I can confirm that it's surrounded by flesh walls, ceilings and floors
I've played this game three times, each with different friends (blind for them) as I absolutely LOVE this game and its 4th wall breaks. I had the advantage of playing this blind for the first time, and I was immediately obsessed. Yeah, it can get long and boring with the level design, but I like to think of it as a remastered, newer, more intense version of IMSCARED. I absolutely cannot wait for A Dark Place 2 to come out!
Crazy to see this uploaded today, I spent ages trying to remember the name of this game just a couple of days ago
im new to this channel and all the jokes caught me off guard, i literally laughed for like 2 minutes from your description of the endings at 15:54 lol
Thank u for presenting these videos w/ comedy. I scare easily so it helps alot
This game is obviously inspired by I'm scared but it still looks very interesting and I like the train section. And the way it breaks the fourth wall and acts like a virus.
yessss u finally made a video on this game, I love this game
I have a huge collection of 3D indie and non indie horror games that I have running on my 1999 Windows 2000 PC. Including many Dark Basic/FPSC games, and 3D Game Maker classic games. But even one Unity 3D game (an older version of Slender). I have more running on it than you usually could.
If you would like me to list any of these games (some of them are obscure or difficult to find a download for), for video ideas, let me know.
the thing that scares me with most of these games is that u have to complete them in 1 playthrough cus u are literally forced to play along or u will get jumpscared
Sans undertale
Such emotional words😭
He has such a way with words🥲
Man can i just say i love yer vids. Something about them takes me back, idk why
If i had a nickel for everytime a horror game character claims to have made a world just for you in a bad ending, i'd have 2 nickels
Kinitopet lol
Very glad you’re excited for the second game, as at the moment Xer is currently working on building the series from ground up with some connected lore and made on unreal engine. As for progress that is something I don’t know, but I have been helping him with designs and the icon of a dark place 2 was made by me, thank you so much for feedback and will forward this video to them
Was funny that you said "it kind of looks like a bad Sans creepypasta" about the skull form because from the moment I saw the sprite in the thumbnail I was like, this design looks bad enough to be straight outta Undertale!
Toadbup never fails to give us the “jeepers creepers”
Ngl oneshot is also a game that isnt horror but its also a game that also needs you to use the game files and its cool
babe wake up new toadbup video dropped
I would be even more scared if it asked me for admin permission since I realised that I gave a game like this permission to do whatever it wanted with my computer.
The fact that the antagonist looks like flowey made me think that this video was about an Undertale creepypasta 💀
This game really makes me feel my sins crawling on my back
omg sans undertale
You jump scared me with Percy
Well done
I love it when the nightmare said "You're gonna have a bad time" and proceeds to blast everything in the game
im really zooted rn and the censor has me cracking up what even is that nanosecond soundclip
I will never unsee froggit from undertale in nightmare
ribbit ribbit
i had a nightmare like this once
for me the new skull look makes nightmare looks like he's blushing 💀😊
2:49 the best transition into a promotion ever
18:10 You can see him at the bottom right for a moment
this is the PERFECT horror game
that skulkl thing that nightmare turns into really reminds me of Welcome to the Game (or something similarly named i dont rember)
You forgot about the super secret ending that you can get in the chase part in the recording room. In the spot where Nightmare spawns, there is a path behind him. If you manage to get there without Nightmare catching you, you will be on track!

5:46 actually made me jump, but I wheezed afterwards.
This just feels like Hello Neighbor
The lost game in the little cabin is actually a real game that requires 2 players and i played it with my friend and if you complete the game you will get a code for a door in the finale of a dark place but i think the door really doesn't have any impact on the game but you do get access to a secret room kinda like the silent hill pt demo where it just is the same room but weirder and weirder and eventually you go to a weirder place and then it ended for me.
13:58 ah yes thank you for giving me back my dead
hum
i wanted to do the game again but things happened, nightmare told me that he was the one hanging himself in the chapter 3 or 4 idk
and in the 1 scripted jumpscare i just got into a weird room and my friends heard a strange thing from my mic, looks like there's more to discover ToadBup
The fact this game would force you to message a random email is probably the scariest part as an introvert.
IS THAT SANS ON THE THUMBNAIL
The antogonist is a froggit lol
I wonder if I was the only one that suddenly started humming the Thomas the Tank Engine theme when the horror train started bumping about.
the developer maxed out code and left graphics in the dust man
I was about to comment "this is exactly what IMSCARED does" but it's literally in the first bit of the video lmao
Finally. 100% Definitive proof that Saya is real.
Thank you for the quote 2:18
That real skull is just high quality Nightmare
This game is the definition of spoopy.
The meta elements are pretty, I kind of think that the game's general aesthetic and the uninspired antagonist hinder it a bit. I think the minimalist angle with its design is good for that "malware" aesthetic, but the stock writing/imagery undermine the scares even before it turns into a big skull jpg.
The permission thing is interesting because its good it asks that but yeah it does miss a bit of what made old stuff like Luna Game scary; finding a random game on the internet as a kid and having that part of your brain do "wait did I ACTUALLY download something I shouldn't have?". That said there's something genuinely sweet about a horror game being willing to pull back the curtain and tell you its just a game before doing anything crazy, gives the vibe a friend trying to scare you.
17:38 that is a song from the popular creepy website, Terminal 00. It is a distorted version of the song plain as asia
