  • R. L. Stine's Goosebumps book series was a worldwide phenomenon when it launched in 1992.
Growing up I read some of the books my brother had collected, but I was far more enamoured with the cover art created by Tim Jacobus than the words on the page.
From the frightening images of Slappy the dummy and the Haunted Mask, to the rich colours of The Cuckoo Clock of Doom and One Day At HorrorLand, the Goosebumps cover art was seared into my brain.
30 years later, I called Jacobus to discuss his work.

@@nate6045 Totally. I'm 36 and seeing those covers is a flood of old feelings and wonder from the later days of elementary school. The art used to amaze and inspire me. I still remember studying the muscles on the "Attack of the Mutant" guy, and wanting so bad to draw superhero looking characters like that. Monster Blood II also really appealed to me, I think because I associated it with green Nickelodeon slime.

    Tim Jacobus is legendary.
His artwork for Goosebumps was what drew me in as a kid to the series; it was visually scary yet enticing.

The reason why I love videos like this, Is that it reminds you that your favorite media had to be made. I feel that people often overlook the work that goes into making something. Tell me, Have you ever looked at the painting on a Goosebumps book cover & wondered: "Hmm, I wonder who painted that?" I bet not. I don't, & I bet most people don't as well. These types of videos help to counteract that, by showing people how it was made. Thank you for not letting artists talent go unrecognized!

What a beautiful short... genuinely moved me. Goosebumps reshaped my perspective as a child, creatively and substantially. I couldn't believe something that Nightmarish and yet the perfect combination of cartoonish was in SCHOOL libraries!
Spent all my youth in principal offices and pulling my mother out of work in trouble because I couldn't stop drawing monsters or being distracted by drawings in books and would always carry whacky toys. Discovering GOOSEBUMPS sort of justified all that.

Didn’t know I needed this. Seeing the cover again reminds me of wishing I could afford them at the book fairs lol. What a Legend!

This man is the original Clickbait, never had I been so disappointed by a book because of how tame it was comparing it to the illustration

These covers are so nostalgic for me. Outstanding work and cool to get some background on the actual artist.

This was dope, and Tim seems like an awesome guy and a great artist. I really enjoyed learning about the man behind the art who scared and captured my attention as a kid.
    Great video.

This is so cool. I grew up with these books and always looked forward to the artwork... like Pokémon cards, I collected them (and also read them). Thanks for making this!

I remember being a kid, reading so many goosebumps books, just one after another and I always chose them based on the cover instead of the synopsis; I loved the cover art so much- I still do!
I would go back and look at the covers as I was reading to get that feel again before diving back in. What a legend!

Will never forget in 2008 (kindergarten) just staring at the goosebumps books even though I was scared of some of them but I couldn’t stop 😂

I don’t think I ever read a single full goosebumps book but I had almost all of them, this guys art is what sold those books, had there been no (or inferior) cover art, no one would know R.L. Stines name.

      R. L. Would’ve done alright, but Goosebumps definitely wouldn’t have been as big without Tim. Both working together made it what it was!

Goosebumps was such an obsession of mine as a kid, and Tim Jacobus' name had just as much of a spotlight for me as R.L. Stine's did! I have very distinct memories of browsing his online portfolio when I was young and trying to replicate his compositions in my own art, and it's so cool to learn more about him and his career through this little docu!
