The Artist Behind Australia's Most Iconic Shirts
If you lived in Australia in the 90s, you remember the Mambo brand and their range of loud shirts.
Chris O’Doherty, AKA Reg Mombassa - artist and founding member of rock band Mental as Anything - was the man behind many of Mambo’s iconic shirt designs, and his graphic art is now synonymous with the brand.
I spoke with Mombassa about art, Mambo and the end of the world.

I Co-Created Crash Bandicoot
Переглядів 8066 місяців тому
In the mid-90s, animation character designer Charles Zembillas was engaged by video game developer Naughty Dog to work on their new game, Willy the Wombat. The resulting character designs sketched by Zembillas would end up becoming one of the video game industry's biggest icons - Crash Bandicoot. I spoke with Zembillas to learn about his work on Crash and how it wasn't the only iconic Playstati...
The Artist Who Designed He-Man Characters
Переглядів 1,5 тис.7 місяців тому
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was the biggest cartoon of the 1980s. The way Mattel had teamed with Filmation to sell toys would change the industry forever. Charles Zembillas hadn't been at Filmation very long when a package of He-Man toys was delivered to the studio. He would soon find himself designing characters for the now iconic series. I spoke with Zembillas about his career in a...
PJ Lynch: My Career Illustrating Children’s Books
Переглядів 7128 місяців тому
The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey, Written by Susan Wojciechowski, is the Kate Greenaway Medal winning picture book that has become a holiday season favourite for millions. The book's rich and textured artwork by illustrator PJ Lynch caught my eye 30 years ago, and has stayed with me ever since. I called Lynch to learn more about his creative journey, his current projects and how he craf...
Image Founder Erik Larsen On His Career In Comics

One of the founding fathers of Image Comics, Erik Larsen, tracks his journey in comics from self-publishing, to Spider-Man, to 30 years writing and drawing his own creation - Savage Dragon. In this interview Larsen shares with us his early days jumping from Eclipse to DC to Marvel, how he accidentally gave Venom his tongue and his advice for those trying to break into comics. Erik Larsen's Webs...
The Artist Who Cross-Sectioned Star Wars
Переглядів 3,7 тис.9 місяців тому
Star Wars hype was huge in the late 90s with the imminent premiere of Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. New Star Wars movies meant new Star Wars books, and one particular series of books caught my eye. Star Wars: Incredible Cross-Sections gave us the first detailed look inside the classic ships and vehicles from the original trilogy, and to an 8-year-old they were holy texts. With the release of e...
The Artist Who Crafted The Stinky Cheese Man
Переглядів 87 тис.9 місяців тому
The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales is the Caldecott Honored picture book that took the children's literary world by storm when it was published in 1992. The dark, textured and unique artwork of illustrator Lane Smith helped turn The Stinky Cheese Man, as well as The True Story of the Three Little Pigs (both written by Jon Scieszka), into American classics. 31 years later I call...
The Fantasy Artist Behind Deltora Quest
Переглядів 2,6 тис.9 місяців тому
When Emily Rodda's Deltora Quest series of fantasy books launched in 2000, they quickly became a worldwide phenomenon, selling more than 18 million copies - and it was easy to see why. You're not meant to judge a book by its cover, but the Deltora Quest covers looked nothing like the other children's books on the shelves at the time - and to a ten-year-old, different was definitely good! I spok...
The Odd Cards That Hooked Australia
Переглядів 2,9 тис.10 місяців тому
Oddbodz, a collection of crazy and crude cards, completely captured the imaginations of 90s kids in Australia and New Zealand. The series was made up entirely of artwork from Australian artist Andy Hook, with many of the characters he created becoming iconic for a generation of young creatives. I tracked Hook down to discuss the series and to find out how it all happened. Andy Hook Art: www.and...
The Artist Who Gave You Goosebumps
Переглядів 141 тис.10 місяців тому
R. L. Stine's Goosebumps book series was a worldwide phenomenon when it launched in 1992. Growing up I read some of the books my brother had collected, but I was far more enamoured with the cover art created by Tim Jacobus than the words on the page. From the frightening images of Slappy the dummy and the Haunted Mask, to the rich colours of The Cuckoo Clock of Doom and One Day At HorrorLand, t...

He later went on to use the Oddbodz characters in K-Zone comics, and had some Flash fames based on these renditions up on the K-Zone site. There was also a PC game where the conceit is that YOU'RE Mystery Kid, basically a kid from our world (you) sucked into the Oddbodz realm.

As a Kiwi, the fact that the original artist didn't even know his work was super popular here until 20 years later is hilarious to me.

Fabulous artist. Great to hear his backstory and behind-the-scenes info about the making of the books you wouldn't hear anywhere else. It's a little disappointing there isn't a cross-section book accompanying Rise of Skywalker, but I've heard there wasn't enough new ships or locations to warrant a full book for it, so they added six or seven new drawings to a new 2020 edition of Star Wars Complete Vehicles that covers ROS.
