I Was A Little Golden Book Artist
Little Golden Books are a literary institution. Since 1942, they've been filling the bookshelves of children across the globe. Recently, their stories are tackling some of the most famous people in the world - including pop sensation Taylor Swift. I spoke with artist Elisa Chavarri about how painting Frida Kahlo led her to illustrating Taylor Swift's Little Golden Book Biography.

I Was A Harry Potter Cover Artist
Переглядів 50 тис.5 місяців тому
When a new Harry Potter book was released it was a big deal. While the American versions of the books kept the same cover artist throughout the series, the UK covers went through several artists. The artist responsible for the final three covers - The Order of the Phoenix, The Half-Blood Prince and The Deathly Hallows - was illustrator Jason Cockcroft. I spoke with Jason about his career and hi...

If you lived in Australia in the 90s, you remember the Mambo brand and their range of loud shirts. Chris O’Doherty, AKA Reg Mombassa - artist and founding member of rock band Mental as Anything - was the man behind many of Mambo’s iconic shirt designs, and his graphic art is now synonymous with the brand. I spoke with Mombassa about art, Mambo and the end of the world. Reg Mombassa Website: www...

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was the biggest cartoon of the 1980s. The way Mattel had teamed with Filmation to sell toys would change the industry forever. Charles Zembillas hadn't been at Filmation very long when a package of He-Man toys was delivered to the studio. He would soon find himself designing characters for the now iconic series. I spoke with Zembillas about his career in a...

The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey, Written by Susan Wojciechowski, is the Kate Greenaway Medal winning picture book that has become a holiday season favourite for millions. The book's rich and textured artwork by illustrator PJ Lynch caught my eye 30 years ago, and has stayed with me ever since. I called Lynch to learn more about his creative journey, his current projects and how he craf...

The Artist Who Cross-Sectioned Star Wars

Star Wars hype was huge in the late 90s with the imminent premiere of Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. New Star Wars movies meant new Star Wars books, and one particular series of books caught my eye. Star Wars: Incredible Cross-Sections gave us the first detailed look inside the classic ships and vehicles from the original trilogy, and to an 8-year-old they were holy texts. With the release of e...

The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales is the Caldecott Honored picture book that took the children's literary world by storm when it was published in 1992. The dark, textured and unique artwork of illustrator Lane Smith helped turn The Stinky Cheese Man, as well as The True Story of the Three Little Pigs (both written by Jon Scieszka), into American classics. 31 years later I call...
The Fantasy Artist Behind Deltora Quest

When Emily Rodda's Deltora Quest series of fantasy books launched in 2000, they quickly became a worldwide phenomenon, selling more than 18 million copies - and it was easy to see why. You're not meant to judge a book by its cover, but the Deltora Quest covers looked nothing like the other children's books on the shelves at the time - and to a ten-year-old, different was definitely good! I spok...
The Odd Cards That Hooked Australia

Oddbodz, a collection of crazy and crude cards, completely captured the imaginations of 90s kids in Australia and New Zealand. The series was made up entirely of artwork from Australian artist Andy Hook, with many of the characters he created becoming iconic for a generation of young creatives. I tracked Hook down to discuss the series and to find out how it all happened. Andy Hook Art: www.and...
The Artist Who Gave You Goosebumps

R. L. Stine's Goosebumps book series was a worldwide phenomenon when it launched in 1992. Growing up I read some of the books my brother had collected, but I was far more enamoured with the cover art created by Tim Jacobus than the words on the page. From the frightening images of Slappy the dummy and the Haunted Mask, to the rich colours of The Cuckoo Clock of Doom and One Day At HorrorLand, t...
