Driving the ALASKA HIGHWAY through Northern BC (Van Life in Canada)

- This week we reach a huge milestone in our journey - Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway! We'd been warned about the risk of cracked windscreens along the Dalton Highway, and in Alaska in general. Gravel roads, snow melt carrying rocks and huge industrial lorries are not the best combination. But the inevitable happened much sooner than we anticipated!

↠ A BIT ABOUT US
We're Chesca and Ben, and with our two pups River & Scout (🐶 🐶 ) we live and travel full-time in our self converted sprinter van, Sophia. We spent the past 2 years road tripping as much of Europe as we could, from the wild coasts of Portugal to the Syrian border in Turkey, tackling lockdowns and a van re-build along the way. But now, we're feeling like a new challenge. In the summer of 2022, we'll be shipping our van from the UK to Canada, on a mission to drive her all the way to Argentina!

Hello! Completely forgot to let you know what the price was for the windscreen, we were just so happy it was possible! Are you ready? It cost approx £350 all in. Absolute madness when you consider companies were charging £200 to fix a chip with resin a couple of months ago. Here we are in the middle of Northern BC, with a new windscreen delivered and replaced next day. A* service!
Great news on the windscreen prices
This same Company replaced my windshield in my driveway!! They are great!!
It's Canada, we take care of each other...
So glad you are being looked after
@@philipgray9155 nice to have free healthcare or I'd be in deep trouble, thanks
Your blogs get better and better.. I’ve watched you traverse the continent from Nova Scotia to Maine .. to Florida New Mexico .. etc.. and now Your in British Columbia.. you have done well my friends!!! Godspeed!!!!! Lollllll❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊
Thank you so much Mariam! Your support and love each week always makes us smile. We really have come a long way from Nova Scotia! And there's still a loooong way to go yet 😬😳💞
You guys are quite brave to tackle northern Canada and Alaska in April and May, where yikes it is still winter! I have called a few moose I happen to know and asked them to come out and say hi to you on your amazing journey!
Hehe thank you! We're looking forward to seeing them 🤪 Yeah we're sometimes wondering what the hell we're doing! But we do love it being cold and icy and winter, makes it feel like we're earning the drive to Prudhoe Bay!
Customer service is so important. Without it, I don't know how people stay in business. I always think it's a thing of the past as it's often hard to find, so it's heartwarming when you find a business with excellent customer service. So glad you were treated well. Makes such a difference! 💕
Canada do customer service like nowhere else. Everyone is just so friendly and helpful, everywhere 🥰 💕
Another wonderful video. Safe travels. :) PS: Loved the drone shots. Really shows the landscape and road so well.
Thank you 🥹 The drone shots shocked me when I saw just how much of a scar the road cuts through the landscape. As straight as an arrow for as far as the eye can see! 🤯
Just wanted to acknowledge your skipping all the everyday journey footage as while it's amazing, I'm a Canadian and I've seen it a lot in others vlogs (which were also great), but you're heading at the right time so your journey while there will be completely different! 😍 Can't wait! 💞
Thanks Deborah 💕 Only skipping a few hours here and there as we make up some time. But the further north the harder it is to do that! The landscapes here are breathtaking, they're leaving us pretty much speechless!
….love how excited you both are…makes me smile as I sit with my jackapoo rescue Linus watching y’all- he’s a be bit jealous of the adventure and b pays very close attention 😂🤍
Loving this series 🙌🏻🙌🏻❤️
Woop thank you Scott, so happy to hear this 😌 Sending love to you and the fam xx
@@OverlandingSophia You all look like your having a fantastic time 🤗stay safe and be lucky 🍀
Glad to hear all is well and the windsheild replaced. Happy Birthday River!
Thank you Kim! 🧡✨
Happy birthday to River 🎂. Another fantastic week. Stay safe 💕for River and Scout.
Thanks Jillian, sending love! 💕
So pleased you got the screen fixed, yet again a great video 😊
Thanks so much Tony 😊
I used to love watching ice road truckers too, it was so intense and fascinating ❄️ happy birthday to River, she was such a cute puppy and grown into a beautiful dog ❤️
Yess! Just loved the adventure of it all, even if they did over-hype the drama sometimes. Maybe that's why I gravitated to UA-cam 😂
Your enthusiasm is a delight to watch.
Just feeling so happy to be here 🥹
We're loving the cinematic drone footage at the start of your recent videos guys! what an amazing time of year to drive through Canada and into the Alaskan Highway! Enjoy!!
Whew! So glad to hear MB windscreens are a global part. Speedy is a great chain all across North America, warms my heart Dawson Creek done you right.
Congrats on Milepost 0 (both of them), and the moose sighting! Many more of both on your way north. 🇨🇦❤️❤️😎👍xx
They really did 💛 And it's the biggest relief to know they can source it again if needs be! Although obviously, let's hope not 😂 Hope you guys are keeping well, sending love 💕
I used to watch every episode of Ice Road Truckers, as well.....really miss the show.....hasn't been on in a few years ever since one of the main drivers died in a tragic plane accident......forget his name now. Seeing that bit of ice road reminded me of the show right away.
Ah I didn't know that! How sad. Wasn't sure if it was still running or not. The further north we get the more the scenes remind me of the show, especially seeing the big trucks on a snowy mountain pass!
Great episode looks amazing glad you got your windscreen fixed
Thanks so much Alex, such a relief to know they can be replaced!
Happy Monday
Love the caption of your adventures to Alaska
Happy Monday lovely! 💕
love following you, enjoying the scenery and learning from your great research!!
Thanks so much Mary, so happy to hear you're enjoying the videos! 💛
GR8 VID ~ LOVED ❤ IT !!!
Denali, a very beautiful park. A friend of mine worked there for a year. Have a good trip.
Happy you got your windshield replaced , enjoying follow your journey , Happy Birthday River ❤️🥳.
Thanks so much Cindy 💛
Glad I found you this week, and glad I found you guys 8 months ago as you started your journey in North America.
Love this, we're glad you found us too Ashley 💕 So happy you're enjoying the videos xx
I was humming the Speedy Glass jingle the second i saw the sign 🎶 Speedy Glass repair... Speedy Glass replace.. 🎶 Sending good luck and vibes from Ontario for the rest of your Journey!
Omg, in the UK we have a jingle with the exact same lyrics, except it’s for a company called Auto Glass. Wonder if it’s the same?! 🎶
@Overlanding Sophia It could be owned by the same company. I noticed that in Ireland, they had a lot of stores with different names but were an almost exact copy of what we have in Canada
Amazing video. Well done and happy birthday River. 🎂
Thanks so much Pat 🥰
As a Canadian who is very much enjoying the start of spring, it just seems wrong to be heading into the snow and ice lol! But glad you're having fun.
As Brits who are watching friends and family enjoying Spring, seeing the wildflowers and blossom back home, it feels very wrong to us to be heading deeper into the cold 😆 The warmer weather is going to be the best reward when we can finally turn south again 🌞
Morning Guy's.
Looks like the landscape has changed once again. The Baha is just distant warm memories.
Happy Birthday River. He loves the pack that he runs in.
Stay safe up there and good fortune.
Cheers, keep the faith.
Dean
Oh it really is. Those beaches seem a world away from where we are now 😂
Please be careful when stepping out onto the frozen lakes at this time of the year, they are starting to thaw and you don't want to suddenly find yourself in the freezing water or under the ice. Take care, loving your journey 🇨🇦
I don't think we want to go on any frozen lakes this time of year! 😳 The one we went on near Banff and Jasper was only the stony edge, don't think we want to walk over any deep water xx
Congratulations on seeing your first moose😊 Thrilling! Please be careful tho, they can get aggressive. People have been hurt or worse
Always, wildlife is wild after all 🥰
Great you got the windscreen sorted
And so quickly! But, it's happened again 🙈
Awesome guys
Congrats on the windshield repair. Make sure and keep the parts number for that window handy.
Very much a relief! And the parts number is on the windshield, so even better 😃
Well, it's all happening your end. Wishing you well on your journey and Happy Birthday River! All the best!
Haha never a dull day! Cheers Nick, sending love 💕
Fantastic news that the windscreen was fixed so efficiently.
Happy birthday River ❤ love the squirrels in a log toy that's awesome!
Stunning video as always you four. Safe onwards travels 💜xx
Thank you 🙏 Isn't it so cool! I love it more than River does 😂 💛 xx
Welcome to BC, guys!!!.....I'm sorry you had a bad experience with a logging truck here! Congrats on reaching Mile 0 and best of luck with the rest of the journey.
Thanks Mark! And it's okay, sounds like it's our inaugural experience 😆 🇨🇦
Hi guys so glad the windscreen was fitted ok. They sound like such an amazing company which is so important when travelling. Another great vlog, happy birthday River from our 2 beagles 🐶🐶 take care Sarah and lee
Thanks so much you two! They were so lovely, makes all the difference when you're far away from home and something like that happens. Knowing you're taken care of and all that 💛 Give your two some belly rubs from us! xx 🐾
Hi guys and pups. Your videos are the best!
Happy Birthday to River!
I have a short hair BC as well, and mine loves the squirrel hide and seek toy also :)
Drive safe ❤
Thanks so much Renee 🥹 Ah love that about your pup! I think I like the toy more than River does 😂 xx
love the epic scenery footage you've been taking. You've been showing me my country. Never been that far west before :)
Love this 🥹 I hope you can make it out here one day, it's bucket list stuff! 💛
If I ever go to Dawson Creek, I will be taking a photo of YOUR sticker!
& Happy Birthday, River!!
Aw yes!! There was barely any room on that sign so we're tucked into the corner 😂
The squirrel toy is the best! I had one for my colliie x poodle when she was young and it was her absolute favourite toy......maybe she needs a replacement for her next birthday too. Enjoying watching your adventure guys. x
It's so cute! We've started hiding treats in there too and Scout shoves his entire head in, so funny 😂
Just found you guys. How fun to see the road in the snow. Just did my epic road trip in September 2022, but went up to Tuktoyaktuk instead. Have fun and safe travels.
Hello! And welcome 🥰 Ah amazing, would love to do that road one day. And yep, lots and lots of snow this time of year! Playing Russian roulette as to whether we can stay in a camp spot... might be clear, might be buried in 8ft of the white stuff!
So glad you got the windscreen sorted. We really thought there was no way they could be different. That was some ding though! Amazing scenes once again and so exciting to see the moose. Really looking forward to this next leg ❤
Thanks guys, we were 99% sure it would fit but had a niggle of doubt. Big relief! Those lorries can come at us! (But please no more big rocks, thanks) 💛 xx
safe travels❣
Thank you 😌💕
Glad your windscreen was fixed quickly. Speedy Glass have shops across Canada. Loved River’s birthday toy. A number of years ago while driving in northern New Brunswick we saw a family of moose. A huge male, a cow moose and their two very young calves. Thankfully they were standing on the side of the road. Moose are fascinating creatures but are a danger to themselves and motorists on forested highways. Stay safe and have a week full of amazing adventures. 💕💕💕💕🇨🇦
Ah so amazing to see a whole family! Definitely good to see them from the safety of the car... and a safe distance 😅 We've heard so many stories about moose accidents, aggression, everything. Still excited to see our first one though! 💕
@@OverlandingSophia Like most animals most dangerous are cows protecting their calves and bulls during mating season otherwise it's just people being really stupid trying to get to close and not understand they are wild animals and are use to fighting off wolves and grizzly bear with no problem taking out a person or two along the way.
Very cool driving the dalton highway. I used to love ice road truckers . And now your doing it ✔️
My 15 year old self would be so happy 😃
When you get into southern Yukon keep an eye out for wild buffalo -- you're sure to see them. And perhaps some caribou. Whitehorse is epic too.
Yes yes and YES!
Hey guys, well done on calmly dealing with the windscreen and great to see you start the epic road. Another lovely vid ❤
Thanks so much guys, just so relieved to know we can get it replaced. This road just keeps getting better and better. You haven't seen anything yet! 😳 💛
Have fun guys! I have done your route before. Only thing I regret is not slowing down even though it seems like you gotta go go go in the moment
Thanks Tyler! Orrr, when you have your brother's wedding you have to fly back to the UK for from Vancouver 😢
So glad you are so positive about Canada....you enjoyed the lovely East Coast, and now good experiences, so far, on the West Coast. There are many Speedy Glass locations in Canada - so happy they were able to help you... Good luck on your crazy next part of your journey..
Thanks so much Anne, we've really had nothing but positive experiences in Canada... on both sides!
Wild….. we always watched the ice road truckers too lol. Would have been fun to see you guys drive on it if it was earlier winter. Always a fun new different adventure every week! Take care happy birthday to the 🐶.
Safe travels
Must be so surreal to be driving over a lake... and a little nerve wracking too 🥴 But would love to try it! Hope all is good with you Russell, must be much warmer in NS than it is up here 🥶 💛
Hi guys, good job on getting the windscreen changed, its so nice to meet people who will go out of their way to help.
I know you'll be careful, please watch out for those moose and the dogs, they are so big and can do so much damage. The scenery is fabulous. I watched ice road truckers too, hope you get to drive on one, very cool. Stay safe, love Sue and Bryn xx
Thanks Sue, the people you meet can make the biggest difference to your experience of a place. And yes of course, we are super cautious around the wildlife. We have a zoom on the lens which is why it looks so close but we were only just a hop into the open door of the van. Although saying that, we really thought she'd gone when we got out 😂 🙈 Hope you're doing well, love and hugs xx 💕
Happy Birthday River!! 🥰💖🎂
Woof woofer! (Thank you!) 🐶 💕
I love how typically you kinda dodged the "bad" weather and it was always warmer where you were currently staying in contrast to where I was watching the vlogs from. Now that the weather gets sunnier and warmer (finally), you're diving deep into the cold. It's such a different watch because I was super envious about your ability to wear lighter clothes and not wear warm jackets all the time. Now I can just enjoy the views and vlogs without becoming even remotely jealous of your cold toes and freezing winds. 😂
And of course happy birthday River! Her bunny ears as a puppy were everything, can't believe she's already 3!
(I'm so glad you reached point 0 of the highway adventure! Worth the wait! 🎉)
Until next week xx 💕
Hahah oh yes I don't think anyone would be jealous of the weather right now 😂 All the locals are telling us winter is hanging on tight, usually the snow would be 2-3 weeks gone by now. Typical! Kind of adds to the adventure of it all, can't have us being too comfortable now can we. Hope you're doing good, are your exams all over now? Much love xx 💛
Yeah! One of the best Turkish vanlife souvenirs!!!
Absolutely!! A sticker and a dog, what more do we need?!
Hi guys. Congratulations on the successful repair of the van. Such beautiful places you have there, enjoy nature. Summer has already begun in our country, the weather is + 25 ° C. On Friday we leave for a journey of 1100 km through three cities. Enjoy Alaska!
Thank you Sergei! Enjoy the warm weather for us, and safe travels on your next adventure!
@@OverlandingSophia thanks
You got an upgrade on the windscreen, there's a sun strip on your new one ❤
Yess! Well spotted! Ben is loving it 😎
Happy 3rd birthday River! James xxxx
Woof! Thank you 🐶
Seems like you are set with a beautiful clear new windshield without even those tiny pinprick sized holes that one normally collects so quickly. Perfectly timed for epic vast views in the Yukon.
I always enjoy the super straight roads that go on for miles to tantalizing vanishing points and sometimes in hotter climes with mirages.
I used to watch Ice Road Truckers too. Scary stuff !
Sending a hug and a smooch to River for birthday number three and we can't forget Scout.
Looking at the Yukon on the map gives me goose bumps of excitement for you. Have always wanted to go driving that far north.
As always , safe travels filled with memorable experiences, magical vistas and hopefully a whole lot of wildlife.
Chesca, Ben, River and Scout - love to you all. Onwards💞💞💞💞
Exactly! If we were going to have a new windscreen, now is surely the best time! Ugh I can't say I love the straight roads 😂 They go on forever and just when you think you're going to have a change of scenery or an epic view emerge over a false hill... nope, more of the same! But I'm not complaining... spoiler: The scenery this week went up about 10 levels. AND we might have seen some wildlife! 🐻 But sssh 🤫 Wishing you a lovely week ahead. Love and hugs from all of us xx 💕
@@OverlandingSophia Those straight roads can make one a bit catatonic and as I was writing the last message a little voice in my head was saying 'yes but where are the surprises around the next corner when there is no corner?'🤔...Not breathing a word about what you might have experienced this week. might it be🐻🐻🐻? just an educated guess but 🤫🤫 🤫 Heading out to dig some holes in the garden (with no upper body strength this time of year) where the ground is some of the worst gnarly rock and matted roots and hardly any soil. May not be successful. May wait for rain to soften stuff up. May...
Love and hugs to you as well and as always safe happy travels oxxo❣
Haul trucks are notorious for throwing stones! I've worked in the forest industry for over 30 years now and I've lost count of the number of windshields I've replaced. This time of year is particularly bad. My advice, give them as much space as you can.
So many people have told us that they don't go a winter up here without at least one windshield replacement 😅 We'd have felt left out if it didn't happen!
Awesome Be safe guys❤
Thanks so much Suzanne, sending love 💕
The map helps, someday I would like to try. Thanks for posting
Thank you for watching 🙏 💛
I made the journey mid April. The worse stretch has been and continues to be from Destruction Bay to Tok. Lots of frost heaves. Just prepare for extra time and patience to get through it. I’ve made this drive over 60 times. I still enjoy it.
Thank you for the heads up! Will be heading that way next week so grateful for the info 🙌
I love watching your videos to relax after long days and they are truly inspiring I hope to be an artist and travel and travel the world and your videos have made that seem possible❤
Love this so much! You can do absolutely anything you set your mind to, don’t let anyone tell you anything otherwise ✨🧡
@@OverlandingSophia thankyou so much
What an epic intro! Great achievement on reaching mile 0, such a shame about the window screen :(
Ah thanks so much guys 💛 By the sounds of it, we can't even say we've done the Alaska Highway if we don't have at least one windscreen replacement 😂
I used to live in Dawson Creek. I'm glad you got to take a photo in front of the Mile 0 sign marker! I've driven the highway between Dawson Creek and Dawson City. Whitehorse is awesome! If you have the opportunity, visit Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre and walk the boardwalk.
Ah just Googled it and it looks like it's temporarily closed! Finding a lot of that at the moment, maybe it will re-open later in the year? Can't wait to get to Whitehorse though! Think a drink is in order when we get there 😃 🥳
If you get the chance don’t miss The Liard River Hotsprings. Their beautiful pretty much year round and well worth the stop. Also when you make it to Haines Junction, The Village Bakery is really good and has pretty awesome views! Safe travels!
Two amazing recommendations, can’t miss Liard hot springs!! These cold, aching bones need a good soak ✨✨✨
You do have to pinch yourself when you hit the Alaska Highway, you can't believe you are finally there and driving it. It's such awesome countryside and landscape. I remember when we saw our first moose, it was the start of our morning drive and out of nowhere this moose steps out into the road and we had to stop and luckily didn't run into him. We saw a lot of wild horses back then too. Glad to see you got some good windshield work from Speedy Glass, we endured a crack too, I think it's something you just have to expect. Enjoy your trip throuth the Yukon, you'll love it. Happy Birthday River🤗🎂🍗
Before we got here we didn't think tooo much of it, but it really does feel different knowing you're on the Alaska Highway, there's definitely a different energy once you pass Dawson Creek! Think it's still too early for most wildlife, happy to continue the sightings from the safety of the van, at the side of the road 😂 Sending love xx 💕
Speedy Glass - Dawson Awesome!
Hahah this should be their new tagline 🤪
Hi as always great dialogue, as a ex windscreen technician, the only issue we had with different windscreens was with Japanese imports regarding windscreens , sprinters are the same all over , so if that if it happens again don't panic the windscreen will not fall in or shatter , the cracks may get longer, but is still safe to drive ,and if you get pulled by the police they can't do anything because they don't know when it happened, unless the drivers view is obstructed , save journey have fun 👍👍
Thanks so much for this Mark, always good to get proper advice from the professionals. Not so worried about the windscreen shattering as thought it has tempered glass, or something like that?! But rather just don't want to be driving through snowstorms and on bad roads with poor visibility. At least knowing it will fit is a huge weight off our mind 💛
Next summer im making a trip from Maine camping accross CA into the Yukon to Alaska, then down BC to Washington state, then accross back east home.
You are making me want to see more of my own country! I have travelled in all 10 provinces, but never to the Territories. Time for a trip on the Alaska Highway, maybe next year. In the meantime I’ll continue to live vicariously through your vlogs! Stay safe. Watch for large animals on the road! (They do more damage than just a broken windshield!)
Take this as your sign to get on the Alaska Highway! Honestly it's something else. The last few videos have been nothing compared to what we've seen this week. Got to keep an eye out for the Bison now, they're out in herds on the grass verge!
@@OverlandingSophia Most people plan to travel the highway in the summer months, when the weather is significantly better. Can I ask why you are going so early in the season? And yes, the bison, moose, elk, bears etc are an extreme danger and will wreck a vehicle. No night driving!
We have to be in Vancouver in July to fly back for two family weddings. They fall pretty awkwardly in the year (beginning and end of July) so we have to do Alaska before or after. Leaving it until after messes up our schedule for shipping the van from Mexico to Colombia, so we have to go now. Ideally we would have waited another 2-3 weeks but we're making the most of it and enjoying the quiet roads, snow covered forest and cosy campfires 😍
Love this I’m from Dawson Creek
Awesome little town 💛
Turkish HGS is an important detail :) We hope to see you again here 🤩
We have to come back for a new one now 😍
Great video as usual, we had a stone hit our screen there was some very bad words that came out of my mouth, as usual Laura laughing at me.
😂 It catches you off guard. This one sounded like the lorry had hit the front!
If I remember right Eddie March did that route in winter on his own on a c90. He's a great character and good watch if you search c90 adventures. He's been all over the world on his little red honda.
Yesss! First saw Ed when he saved Noraly in Utah last year. Such a cool guy and completely mad, in the best way 👌💛
Fabulous video. Clame to fame. My mate Joey Barnes was on the 1st and a few other series of ice road truckers. He now well famous up there now. Got a few other British drivers who do the winter rds up there. Awesome to see you start from mile 0 of the highway. Bloody Epic is an understatement. This is the Best. Looking forward to following you on the Greatest highway in the world. Safe Travels Both. Love and Hugs 🙏❤️
Ah no way!! I'd definitely want an autograph 😂 Bloody loved that show, and Lisa Kelly was just so badass. Feels surreal to be here on such an iconic road. Can't begin to imagine what the Dalton Highway is going to feel like! Big hugs and love to you 💛
Holo 👋from New Mexico🌶️🌵...I didn't realize that was such a big hole in your windshield😮. Wonderful people and service in Dawson City. Happy birthday to River🎉 . I really like how you show us the map. I used to watch Ice Road Hwy. also. Thanks for sharing. Angels all around you and the fur babies and your home on wheels.🙏💖🤗. Oh it was in the low 80' s temperature down here today.
Oh yes she was a big one! Could almost push through the bullseye and create a hole in the glass! River says thank you for the birthday wishes and sends puppy kisses 💕 🐶
Thanks for another great vid, sorry about your windshield, glad Speedy helped you, I think as you travel further north you will be above the tree line, like being on the moon. There is a cog railway train you could take from the Yukon/Alaska border at the Klondike trail, but I don't believe it runs this early in the season, another time perhaps. Stay safe, Rick and Susan
The cog railway sounds really cool, will have a look and see when it's running. We might be able to catch it on our way back south if it's not too far out of our way. Scenery heading north has just been incredible. Mountain passes, deep valleys and now endless forest as far as the eye can see, deep into the Yukon! 😍
We lived in Ft Nelson 1972 to 75…always make sure you have loads of gas…lots of rocks
The highway has obviously had a major upgrade since I was last on it in 1978. Lived in Fort St John for a few years, a town/city you would have passed through 30 miles north of Dawson Creek. Back then the pavement ended about 50 miles north of FSJ and from there it was gravel all the way to Fairbanks.
I ran a building centre in FSJ back when I wore a younger man's clothes and you would not believe the amount of sand screen we sold to the Americans for windshield protection when they hit the gravel "highway". It was illegal but they still built screens and shrouded the fronts of their cars. You are headed towards some beautiful country, some amazing people, and some unusual sites. Keep having fun.
Ah someone else said it was gravel way before the Yukon but that was 20 years ago. Pretty sure it might be tarmac all the way to Delta Junction but don't quote me on it. We'll find out soon enough! So cool to hear you lived there for a few years. We've made it past Fort Nelson now and wow, the landscape is getting better and better. Road trip of our lives, easily! 💛
By the way, don't get to up close and personal with the moose or any other animal for that matter. Where I live there are approximately 15,000 wildlife incidents a year, of which 600 to 700 are moose.
@@WayneHeath-b9t Yeah we've heard how volatile they can be. We were right next to the van with open doors, have a friend who was charged by a moose and don't fancy replicating that 😅
Hi we’re hoping to travel to Canada next year, with our cockerpoo, and wondered have you did it and what sort of costs are involved
Love it when the pen comes out ❤ this map will stay with you forever 😊 u should just write my name on it already 😂
Haha yess the map is a highlight every week! Just love seeing the route develop and evolve 🗺️
Make sure you stop at Liard Hotsprings it's wonderful . The Buffalo 🐃 are so cool too ... enjoy
Absolutely! Cannot pass them by! 😍
Hey, hope you’re all well, I’m loving the intro’s it’s all film like. That must of been so scary to go experience especially from the passenger seat! 😮. It must of been nerve wracking waiting for the call but overall I would be confident the van body’s aren’t all that different. I love signs like the Alaska Highway sign! Yay on the moose sighting! Cheers 🥂. Happy Birthday River! 🎉 a map doesn’t make it look that far. The parkup view is amazing before fort Nelson. I’d be worried to death about ice roads.. but I’m sure as soon as you’re on it, I’m sure it would be amazing!
Anyway, safe travels ahead, see you next week! X
We were 90% sure it would be okay but there's always that seed of doubt... so thankful it worked out as it's really put our mind at ease about getting another bad one on the road to Prudhoe Bay. Hahah yeah driving the ice roads has got to get the adrenaline pumping! 😅 Hope all is good with you Mark, love from all of us! xx
@@OverlandingSophia all is good with me, just getting my little camper through it’s mot although it’s 18year old steering rack hasn’t survived so replacing that, I’ve set up my own travel channel but it’s not going to be anything spectacular like yours. Love from a still cold and rainy Devon x

@@OverlandingSophia absolutely I will. I’ve called it Loid Travels as my nickname is Loid. youtube.com/@Loidtravels.
Did you bring an offering to leave at the Sign Post Forest in Watson Lake? We left our Washington State RIGBY license plate there. Hope you get to check that place out!
No we didn't! Didn't even know about it until we began planning the Yukon a couple of weeks ago. Will just have to admire the forest!
@@OverlandingSophia Well maybe you can paint a sign. We saw lots of those there too. Many people show up with nothing and get creative right there on the spot. Enjoy your trip! Can't wait to see what you guys think of the Dalton Highway - that was a highlight of our trip!
When you head back south if you take the 37 there is a cool place to stop. Jade city is a very small spot that also had a tv show. They are Jade miners there and the store is full of pieces you can see and buy that they mined themselves. Some good luck with getting the windshield replaced and it didn't take long at all.
Not sure how big of a fuel tank you have but you may want to consider having extra fuel on board. Even in the summer fuel stations that you think might be open aren’t. You are travelling during pre summer and I’m sure there will be even less. Minimally 300- 400kms between fuel stops possibly more.
Excellent point, particularly for when we’re on the Dalton. We have a 25l fuel Jerry can on order to pick up when we reach Fairbanks 👍
Even before the Dalton in my opinion. I have done the trip and gas stations we were expecting to be open were not. If your van has good range of 600km per tank or more you should be fine. Once you get into Yukon and Alaska you will notice many vehicles that carry gas can on the roof.
This time of year, there will be no pesky black flies.
Silver linings right! On one hand we would love a bit of warmth… but then out come the mozzies and flies. Catch 22 😅
Must have been a few weeks ago that you were here because its apr 25 and it's quite nice here Nd most of the snow is gone. Hope you have a great trio. Glad Shaun and his staff at speedy got you looked after. Safe travels. Oh and it won't be the last moose you see lol
We were there only last week! We had the windscreen fitted exactly a week ago today! Yep the guys there were awesome, made what could have been a stressful situation into something completely worry-free. Legends 😊
Welcome to British Columbia. 😃🇨🇦❤️
Thank you!! We are so happy to be here!
fabulous
I used to live in Ft. Nelson BC in the 1980s. We had to constantly replace our windshields as the alaska Highway was not paved from Ft. St. John north. There was al ot of construction during that time that did make the drive.
Yes someone else mentioned they lived there in the late 70s and it wasn't paved. Must have been 100x worse. But by the sounds of it, we haven't driven the Alaska Highway if we haven't got at least one cracked windscreen 😂
@@OverlandingSophia There was a story that the highway was purposely built to wind back and forth and snake around and up and down hills to prevent enemy strafeing convoys of vehicles. The reconstruction in the 80 built a long paved stretch through a valley instead of going up through Trutch. It cut hours off the drive.
@@susanrybak7192 That makes sense given the time it was built. So fascinating!
Ha I just asked you if you've heard of Ice Road Truckers then you say you used to watch the TV programme, loved that programme too
Ah just seen this 😂 Yep loved it growing up! Lisa Kelly was so badass, loved her 💪
Yay Canada! BC knows how to do glass! 🤣
Now you see why I warned you about transport truck traffic, try Canadian tire for a deflector sheild that attaches to the leading edge of your hood (sorry bonnett)they deflect bugs birds rocks, etc.and don't speed up there , many Bored RCMP officers with radar guns
Yep I think the trucks are the one thing everyone warns you about, silver lining is we aren't paranoid about a crack heading north now we know it can be fixed. And speeding?! In a fully laden van! 😂
@@OverlandingSophia drive carefully, safe travels ,watch for forest fires on the way to Vancouver, they're here early this year
Hi ya Chesca Ben River and Scout, happy birthday 🎂River, didn’t realise I had been watching for all that time. Still watch IRT on Foxtel and Lisa Kelly has her own channel on UA-cam. Take care and stay safe cheers from Australia 🇦🇺🥵🤩🥶🚐
What now! I loved Lisa! Going to have to check that out immediately. Yep, you've been with us for a while Barry! Hope you haven't got bored of us yet 🥰 xx
Moose can be aggressive and are known to charge when feeling threatened, so I wouldn't get out of the van or get too close when one is around!
We were actually outside reassessing the road ahead, when we thought she’d long gone! Turns out she was just hiding. Will always keep distance though, have friends who’ve been charged and heard enough horror stories! 😨😨😨
Hey guys and happy birthday River. Glad to see you got the windscreen sorted. And not a bad price considering location.
Question tho, have you thought about fitting a CB radio to your van?? It will make that highway all the more safer as Big Rigs shout out what corner and hill they are climbing or bad bends that they are coming to.
Am so jealous of your journey right now. Lol hope all goes ok.
Cheers Dave, yeah we've been reading on some forums and groups about CB radio. Some get it, others say it's not worth it unless you're doing the road in the dead of winter when there's a risk of stuck lorries, other vehicles blocking the road and dangerous white outs. Still debating though! What are your thoughts? 💕
Did you visit the Sign Post Forest in Watson Lake?
Not there yet! But we will do 😃
@@OverlandingSophia If you want a super scenic (but scary) adventure, drive the road between Dease Lake BC, and Telegraph Creek (a 'ghost' town). You can also cross over into Alaska (for a few minutes) in Stuart BC. It is a little detour off the Alaska Hwy.
@@femalism1715 Sounds very interesting! Will have a look 👀
Thanks for another great video. I was so afraid you were going to drive across that ice!!
Did you ever hear of, or watch, the show, Dawson's Creek? Not sure if it was shown in the UK, but my kids watched it all the time when they were children and they're probably close to your age. Stay safe 💖💕
Omg noo!!! It was already melting at the side 🙉 Yes heard of Dawson's Creek and know it was a huge TV show but I was a little bit young for it and never watched it! Was it actually set in Dawson Creek BC?!
@@OverlandingSophia No, Actually I just looked it up. Figured it was and my kids watched it, although I never did. It was actually a fictional town and was filmed in North Carolina. Lol
