    You don’t understand how many videos I’ve had to wade through to find something like this. This is the simplest to understand and it’s given me the know-how and confidence to continue my cat enclosure project. Thank you so much for the video.

    Best explaintion ive seen of how to make a rafter bird mouth. Ive seen so many that required calculating angles without telling you how and giving so much useless info.
    This was short and sweet and made my project so much easier already

    • @Buildsum
      @Buildsum  4 роки тому

      Hi Isabel, Thanks for you comment. Yeah it is quick and easy on a small roof however on a larger roof those who understand the angles and required calculations would find that quicker and easier that having to access the roof on order to do the scribing.

    Smartest video ever about cutting rafters in UA-cam, others are too much calculation, too much talk, video angle show not clearly, seem to showing smart when they lecture.... So on, thanks Sir

    Brilliant. This guy really does explain things in plain english at the nitty gritty level.
    Buildsum please keep all your items on the site. Have you considered making a wikipedia entry for birdsmouth joints-- none of the other sites which come up on google etc search is a patch on yours.
    One Q, in your diagram lower level b/m has its vertical cut outside the wallplate but top vertical cut is inside-- could you make both verticals inside so that bottom vertical presses against inside of wallplate and the top presses against the top horizontal beam. Equally could the top vertical be cut outside the top beam or even both inside or both outside cuts? Would this affect your basic description or the structural soundness of the end fixing?
    Ever thought of doing video on replacing/installing wooden windows in brick walls using simple techniques and dealing with practical problems eg drilling into brick to screw window frame to wall where wall crumbles so won't hold wallplug, use of strongarm etc to hold brickwork up when you cut out hole for new window/doorframe where adjustable[acrow] prop won't lie flat against wall because of welded square foot on bottom of tube,how much brickwork can you leave unsupported and for how long as you play with new frame to allow for not square original old wall opening or fitting metric new in place of imperial old.Most instructions just assume rolls royce materials and perfect situations.
    By the way when fitting rafters what's wrong with laying up two rafters side by side bolted at top to pivot forming an x shape with very short arms above the pivot and the near full length rafter below pivot back down to wallplate and then cutting to adjust to take top horizontal beam either above or below the apex pivot point. Is this structurally unsound ie because rafters are not completely opposite each other just touching side by side. If it's ok it should remove hassle of getting wood cuts perfect before erection+
    Keep up your good work-

    Thank you for the video. It is great and simple. Question: What is the minimum length of the rafters need to be extended at both ends?

    • @Buildsum
      @Buildsum  2 роки тому

      Hi Mate, the maximum overhang is usually stated in the Span Tables, at least here in Australia it is, there is no stipulation on whether that is for one end or both however I would envisage that having an overhang on both ends would be better than just having an overhang on one end as they would tend to balance each other out. As a general rule the cantilever distance is generally 1/3 the length of the beam or in other words you need to have twice the length of the cantilever supported ensuring that you don't exceed the max allowable span of the rafter.

    Hi1 have you deleted your excellent video on birds mouths which I watched some time ago?- I can't find it now2 did you ever get round to covering making hole in brick wall/removing wood window frame from brick wall, where single skin and no lintel in place and replacing--ie how to ensure top of hole doesn't fall in whilst your shaping up /fitting new frame given that old window holes are never square [bits of brick stick out and in and were just packed out with lime mortar 100 years ago to square up hole to frame] but new window frames are square so you need work time to get things right on site[ eg trimming new frame to fit past projecting bits of brick]working only from outside of wall [no access to inside of wall except by leaning through. UK has strong boy tool on scaffold tube but that requires additional holes in brickwork making new weak points

    I think another way ..is to place your rafter on the side edge high and low side of the roof top plate..then trace it with marker or pencil....then cut the traced out wood ..check fit...if rafters fit correctly ....then trace the same cut out on the other rafters.

    • @Buildsum
      @Buildsum  6 років тому

      Of course you could do i that way however it may need 2 people to do it accurately

      Thanks...I will approach my build the tracing way, I will get them all traced out, cut, screwed and nailed in.....I have sons...but they are lazy as heck....they love to eat food, and sleep under my roof..lol....its not a rush build..wont mind too much going it alone..Thanks again.

    Excellent video once again thank you. For trimming the ends of the rafters so they are plumb, would you do that on the ground? And if so how do you then determine the angle? I mean I know how to do the math, but if you're scribing, how does that help you find the angle of the two end cuts?

    • @Buildsum
      @Buildsum  7 років тому +4

      Hi Uri
      While you are scribing the birdsmouths the plumb bevel at the back of the birdsmouth will be the same angle as the plumb bevel for the ends of the rafters.
      The only problem with cutting them on the ground is then having to install them exactly straight so your fascia remains straight, this will depend on how straight your top plate is.
      If you are using Metal Fascia this won't be a problem as the brackets are adjustable however if you are using timber Fascia I would install the rafters first then use a string or chalk line to get the rafters tails cut off in line.
      Hope this helps

    So could you just leave the end wall top plates at an angle (miter the studs) so you could lay the rafters flat across the top ?

    • @Buildsum
      @Buildsum  2 роки тому

      Hi Lawrence, you could however this would tend to redirect the forces that are acting on the wall so it would tend to want to be pushed over rather than the forces pushing straight down.
