I think it's misleading in that..there are fewer good pitchers around, but most teams are just sending out bullpens full of the same basic pitcher, which is the power pitching strikeout artists. I'll never classify bullpen arms as good pitchers, because quite frankly..they're usually not. They're highly erratic from year to year and flame out quickly outside your outliers like the very best closing pitchers, or the above average guys who carve out a good career. And as others say, striking out doesn't have the stigma it used to be teams have decided that there's no difference between a flyout and a strikeout say...so you might as well go big to get the 'maximum value'.
instead of maximizing velocity we need them to focus on what pitching actually is being locate your main strike pitch and change speeds thats the very soul of pitching
Pitchers back then were actually pitchers not just a flamethrower prime examples being Nolan Ryan, Greg maddux, Randy Johnson, Pedro etc plus pitchers back then were more durable. Nolan Ryan was throwing in the upper 90s his whole career and never got tommy john, is 5th in innings pitched and has 222 complete games. What im tryna say is pitchers nowadays have elite velocity and movement but they aren't pitching as many innings as before. Nolan Ryan touching 100 regularly and maintaining the upper 90s on his fastball for 27 seasons while always going at least 7 innings or more per start which SP nowadays arent doing
No they're not too good. It's just that most hitters are swinging for the fences while pitchers are maxing out velo. More K's... but the art of pitching and hitting has been left behind for the present styles. I think in about 10-12 years, the game will steer a bit more back toward contact hitting and pitching with less velo and more accuracy/placement, and less velo .
Pitching injuries will force this eventually. But its funny when 60mph position players take the mound, batters tend to struggle. Messes up their timing. I expect lower speeds to come back
feel like this is a different version of the steroid era. It’s like pitchers were meant to shine now because of the hitters that shined during the steroid era. Sure there were good pitchers during the steroid era, but you could say the same with hitters now facing modern pitching.
