I found several quite large pieces of crazy quilt at a little country yard sale. The lady who was selling them said they belonged to her grandmother who was a crazy quilter. They are old ...hand stitched and partially embellished. The threads she used for embroidery are something you don't see anymore, and the only reason I have not worked on them is I can't find thread like she used... Today's threads would look hideous beside her's. I wish I could share them with you... One of them I use as a table topper and it still has the basting stitches in it. Awesomeness...as you say! I would love to fund that book. I just recently purchased a vintage singer featherweight machine. It became a fascination quickly to learn more & more about the vintage machines. I have owned a Elgin for years & years. It's a beautiful & very functional sewing machine. It only has a suitcase no cabinet. I redid that part a couple of years ago. The old machines where made to last forever. When they have need takin care of. My husband bought that one at a second hand store years years ago for about 30$. It runs like a well oiled machine.
also just note... when I want to buy buttons that MATCH and are really NICE, I will go purchase a shirt for $1.00 at the charity shop. You can get incredible buttons on shirts or the clearance area. I know people like the big jars of buttons but I need some that match at times. Buttons on cards are expensive when NEW.
Sometimes I "wash" my non-washable thrift store clothes and items by putting them on high heat in the dryer for awhile. I may add a dryer sheet if I think it needs a bit more "refreshing." It works for me! That crazy quilt is gorgeous and so very much loving work to make!

This is just a thought, if anyone was concerned with dust mites, depending on the size of the item they could fold it up and place in a plastic bag and if they have the space place it in the freezer. It is the same method you can use for stuffed animals to kill the dust mites. There is a product you can buy in any grocery store or Target that is called Dryell, I am not familiar with the product but it claims to be a Dry Cleaners in your clothes dryer. The clothes dryer can be set on air/fluff which does not heat up but I am not sure if that works with that product, these are just ideas. Also some fresh air can do wonders to freshen up if house odors become trapped. Again like you said, it is decorative masterpiece, treat it as such and all should be well.
I have heard of Dryell but never used it. I will on occasion take my wool coat to the dry cleaners but I wear washable fabrics myself. I hang stuff that needs to be freshened out on the line for a few days. My neighbor thought my dryer was broken and offered me the use of hers just recently lol
@@danceswithpitbulls I also wear "washable" fabric but I was enlightened by watching a segment on Martha Stewart years ago. She had one of the famous behind the scenes people from Broadway. She does all the fitting, dressing, repairing and washing of the garments. Now think about that, actors sweating and stinky with makeup all over the garments. She literally went through garments and was set up in a washroom with basins and machines. She said most everything can be washed and it is all in the process and most is done by hand and also it can be a trial and error thing too. She gave me more confidence in washing a majority of items. These mix fabric quilts can raise and eyebrow on what will shrink, bleed, etc., along with threads and decorative beads. However I guess if one was inclined they could make a sample square of all the fabrics and dunk it is a basin of cold water with gentle soap, roll up in towels (which was the preferred method of removing excess water by the Broadway lady) and lie flat to dry and see what happens.

This is very beautiful work, but I think I will never do such complicated quilts. I am too simple. My mother was very fussy with beautiful quilts, my aunt made quilts you could use for birthing goats. I am in the middle.
Hi Rebecca! I was searching for help to make a crazy quilt and found my old friend from Junk journals. I have not done anything sense my grandson got hit by the drunk guy.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge 💜.. Um. Yes I have a question... I worked 150 thousand hours on my quilt.. putting 72 different materials together... and vintage lace and buttons ..do you think I can put in washer and agitate it til buttons fall off and heat dry til it melts... huh huh .. whataya think 🤔 🙄🙄😂😂love your video! Feeling judgemental today 🤨
Yep throw that sucker in the washer with the hottest water you have and don't forget the bleach. Then you can spend another 150 thousand hours making a new one to replace it. Love ya Bette Jo Montague
@@johannahaineshergenrider8379 I really can't answer that. Maybe get at least a half yard? Around here (east Central Illinois) the thrift stores have bag sales, half off tag days, or .99 days. I will get fabric yardage only if it is on clearance or from a thrift store.
My embroidery skills are very limited & poor. My mother was an absolute artist at it. But I always end up getting the threads tangled & spend to much time on that! It's frustrating!
Ummmm… I actually, truly like your crazy quilt 'style' MUCH better than Judith Baker....hers is way too busy for my taste. I think yours are...just enough. And absolutely gorgeous!! ~ A newbie quilter from Texas. Howdy! :-)
What a sweet thing to say! I hope you are still saying that later hahahahaha! I am busy with my Whackadoodle CQ at present. If you want to contribute a block either finished or just pieced let me know.
You could but it is easier to just keep it clean by being careful. If you want to actually wash it, make it out of cotton or polyester with only thread decorations
Have you ever thought about mounting one of those beautiful, heavily embellished blocks on a canvas painted black? I saw someone doing it with slow stitching pieces. I went to the thrift store and picked up some canvases and wood signs that were kitschy for cheap, gessoed and painted them and gave it a whirl. Your pieces are gorgeous. Just throwing it out there for you for your next craft fair or video idea. I’ll link the video if I’m not explaining it well. I love piecing and working on blocks however, I don’t always want them to become a quilt. She used gel medium, I tried mod podge matte and it worked great ua-cam.com/video/rBXWd8YJTJI/v-deo.html
i guess i can't wrap my head around a "decortive" quilt or even a "wall hanging." a decoraive qui;t serves no purpose, and Wall hanging quilts are waaaay outdated as most people don' live in real castles any more. which is what wall hangings were made for. to block drafts from coming in, o help keep hem warmer. It wasn't to make a place look prettier, however since they were wealthy hey were quite beautiful.
May I suggest a trip to a quilt show or a virtual tour of one. People do indeed use wall hangings for art. There are magazines dedicated to them, quilt guilds who do art quilt challenges, and just plain sewists who enjoy making smaller decorative quilts for display. They can be thrown on a couch or on top of a regular quilt too. Not every quilt has to be used on a bed and not every bed quilt has to be plain and utilitarian. I am working on a queen sized neutral crazy quilt for my daughter.
@@danceswithpitbulls @danceswithpitbulls First of all i'm sorry if i insulted you by my comment. that wasn't my intention. i was only stating my opinion. i personally believe that something can be beautiful and be utilitarian. Otherwise i wouldn't invest so much time, effort, love, & money into it. Each person has a right to do with their quilts as they see fit. I've back watched quite a few of your videos and i find all of yours to gorgeous. and have learned quite a bit from you. most importantly, since i want mine to be utiltarian, don't choose fabrics that can't be washed in some way. whether in a machine on gentle cold or dry cleaned. it may take more time, but watching you make yours, i can see they are works of art & love. And since time is not of an essence for me i can afford that luxury. However, i compare this to my cooking. i would never cooking a 7 course meal, set it down in front of people and say, " i've spent hours upon hours creating this but you can only look at it, you don't get to eat it. however there's a McDonalds down the road if you're hungry." same principle..to you and others it may be fun, as it fun for people to cook the wonderful dishes just to take pictures of then toss out. to me it seems .... wasteful. It goes against everything i was taught by my grandmother.
@@marytramp5678 I wasn't offended at all. You stated your opinion and I defended mine. You are absolutely correct in stating that everyone gets to do their quilts the way they want.

Love ya Bette Jo Montague
danceswithpitbulls 😂😂💜
I would love to see the stitch you are using to border the colors.
My go to stitch is the Cretan stitch. Look in my crazy quilt playlist for a video on it.
@@danceswithpitbulls , I will thank you, it's an absolutely beautiful stitch. The first thing I noticed about your crazy quilts.
I have an old magazine that has butterflies from handkerchief s a n entire quilt.
In today’s market thrift stores are charging more and more for clothing. If I was to buy fabric what size should I get - 1/4 yard? 1/2 yard?
@@johannahaineshergenrider8379 I really can't answer that. Maybe get at least a half yard? Around here (east Central Illinois) the thrift stores have bag sales, half off tag days, or .99 days. I will get fabric yardage only if it is on clearance or from a thrift store.
I recently bought some pearl cotton thread is that what you use??
yes that is my favorite- sizes 3, 5 and 8

Your friends book ...Nancy is beautiful
I never mastered the art like she did but I like trying
I was wondering about the washing of the quilt. Do u think u could have it dry cleaned?
I think it's a better idea to protect your quilt. You could take to a dry cleaners and see what they say but I bet it will look different afterwards.
😍😍😍
My embroidery skills are very limited & poor. My mother was an absolute artist at it. But I always end up getting the threads tangled & spend to much time on that! It's frustrating!
Keep trying. Once you get a rythym going it gets easier.
What do you put on back of crazy quilt?
I like to use a heavier fabric like a tapestry, curtain or upholstry fabric. You can use cotton or flannel too
Ummmm… I actually, truly like your crazy quilt 'style' MUCH better than Judith Baker....hers is way too busy for my taste.
Couldn't you wash by hand in the tub? I'm learning all I can from your vids.
You could but it is easier to just keep it clean by being careful. If you want to actually wash it, make it out of cotton or polyester with only thread decorations
How about Applique for those curves?
What time in uk for live chat
I'm on at night here (very infrequently) so that would be way after midnight for uk
I did ask to join your secret fb page today...still waiting
show us your art!
what is the name of the stich you are using
Eva Villa probably the Cretan stitch as it is my favorite. I will rewatch this and tell you if it is something else.
Rebbe a it is I’m watching the whole series. Love them
Have you ever thought about mounting one of those beautiful, heavily embellished blocks on a canvas painted black? I saw someone doing it with slow stitching pieces. I went to the thrift store and picked up some canvases and wood signs that were kitschy for cheap, gessoed and painted them and gave it a whirl. Your pieces are gorgeous. Just throwing it out there for you for your next craft fair or video idea. I’ll link the video if I’m not explaining it well. I love piecing and working on blocks however, I don’t always want them to become a quilt. She used gel medium, I tried mod podge matte and it worked great

I watched this video and I LOVE IT! I will be thinking about this for one of my future blocks. Thank you so much for suggesting it.
@@danceswithpitbulls you are so welcome! Your embroidery is so beautiful, when I saw this, I had to tell you about it!
i guess i can't wrap my head around a "decortive" quilt or even a "wall hanging." a decoraive qui;t serves no purpose, and Wall hanging quilts are waaaay outdated as most people don' live in real castles any more. which is what wall hangings were made for. to block drafts from coming in, o help keep hem warmer.
You think you could quoif
Definition of 'quoif'
1. a close-fitting cap worn under a veil, worn in the Middle Ages by many women but now only by nuns. 2. any similar cap, such as a leather cap worn under a chain-mail hood. SO, NO!
Cut your bangs. Ugh. Maybe all hair
BAHAHAHAHAHA! Thank you for voicing an unasked for opinion on my hair from a video that is FOUR YEARS OLD! Well done Bella, well done! Now go lay down.
Think she has ADHD
You're probably right. I feel like I do occasionally. Look SQUIRREL!!!!!!
