I just bought a brand new 2019 Passport. Love the way it drives, but I don’t do off road! Interior is really spacious. Mine is a Touring and has more bells and whistles and safety features than I’ve had on any other vehicle I’ve owned and I’ve owned some really nice vehicles in the past. We are also getting better gas mileage than they state for it, which is good.
Great video, thanks. The Honda Passport just made my short list of future SUV purchase options. Thank you for the real world review, keep up the good work. Love the Jay's toque, nice touch.
This is such a Terrific comprehensive review of the Passport. Really excellent and well said .... I feel I have a much more complete understanding about the vehicle together with its features. A much better focus in my opinion instead of the standard speed comparison with another vehicle. Thank you guys for this evaluation and commentary.
Great unbiased review. I only wish (and I’m sure others as well) you shown it handling a few more off-road oriented obstacles. Like actually testing the approach and decent angles in different scenarios, testing the traction of the vtm4, seeing what type of rutted out inclines it could handle etc. Then we’d know it’s capabilities and limits a little bit better in order to make a more accurate assessment of how it stacks up against its competitors. But overall, I appreciate what seemed to be a true unbiased assessment of this PASSPORT👊🍻
This car is meant for road use and to have some off road capability. All the people comparing it to purpose-built body-on-frame offerings from other manufacturers are being hysterical.
@@f181234 They are certainly advertising it as an off roader. automobiles.honda.com/future-cars/passport "Watch the Passport take on rugged terrain, as it tackles sand and mud with ease." Great review on that passport! Just wishing Subaru doesn't sanction TFL anymore. We love to see those Subaru's by TFL. What I'm getting from this is if you want a hardcore offroader get a 4Runner or jeep. But if your after a nice Family hauler that you can take a family of 4 and a tent camping off the beaten path the passport might do the job. As long as your not trying to make it into the really rough stuff.
I wish Suzuki would partner with an American company to release the jimmy here. But would this compare to forester?? Personally I would buy pilot just to avoid cvt. With some proper tires I would think that the passport would be ok on light trails, there’s just no under body protection or after market to produce it. Great review I love the direction and staff that TFL has taken over the past couple of years really completely changed the channel in a positive way
Personally, I love the new passport! I think it looks great and does truly have a niche in the market. To explain this, I am going to compare it to the Honda Ridgeline (of which I am a fan). I think the ridgeline is fantastic but the styling is off and many people who buy midsize trucks do want the ability to have maximized off-road performance even for most of us including myself will never use many of these features or do any heavy offroading. Simply put, the market is limited and I much prefer the unique look of the 1st gen. Why does this matter? As mentioned the Passport carries Honda's comfortable ride and on-road handling characteristics while also allowing the weekend warrior to tow a small camper, ATV, boat, etc and have plenty of room for luggage at an affordable price point. Now realistically no one is buying the passport as an offroad vehicle but it is small and nimble enough to get to that secret fishing lake or forgotten log road while also providing superior traction in dust and snow covered roads. Now here is MY biggest worry with the passport, I believe the engine is too large... now hear me out, this is a smaller SUV and yes compared to the 4 runners it will most likely get better fuel economy but as much as I love Honda's 3.5 L V6 its a bit large, heavy, and thirsty for a vehicle this size. Now Honda is passing this off is smaller and dare I say sportier SUV what I would LOVE to see and believe would be a FANTASTIC engine choice for this vehicle is the 2.0 L 4 cylinder engine used in the Type R. Likely a sportier feel, more fuel efficient, and more exciting engine for everyday driving. Because once again how often is this vehicle going off road??
The 6 is a tried and true bullet proof engine. I personally love the power. If you keep it long term the 6 will outlast the turbo 4. But we all like what we like.
I hear you and I agree! I like what you said about engine choice availability. That is just the one little item Honda can tweak on the Passport model! Thanks!
To me, the best off-roader is always the oldest and cheapest 4WD/AWD car you can find. That way, you can save the money getting a proper lift for at least 8.5 inches, a basic oversized rim/tire upgrade, a substantial brake upgrade, and a good skid plate. If you have the funds to buy a brand new car like the Honda Passport, it’s still a mighty fine choice and the best Honda has to offer. No CVT like the Subaru Forester and Murano; while still getting great fuel mileage
It's also not a significant loss if you accidentally total your vehicle during an off road adventure. Still costly, but not as costly as destroying a pricey new vehicle.
Attention Honda: Please upgrade to the Accord Infotainment Interface, include a panoramic sunroof, and do away with all of that piano-black trim for the 2020 version.
Nice review. Will be interesting to see how one of these will do with a lift and more offroad oriented wheel/tire combination. Obviously it won't be able to compete with real 4x4 trucks in more extreme situations like rock crawling and really rutted trails, but it seems like it will be able to handle some rough and slippery roads. Want to see how it does up Gold Mine Hill and how it compares to Subarus AWD system.
Willow flats road? I know the jokes is "I could take my accord on that!" but, kinda yeah. Last time I was out there I passed a geo metro filled with a coupla hippies. Not kidding. Granted they were working hard, but we say them pass by our campsite later so they made it.
I know a family member who has that drive train. Engine and trans replaced at 44k, and then on second engine at 30k, fuel rail and all injectors replaced. All covered under ext. Warranty.
I just finished to watch and I loved the review... Thank you for sharing all this information with us. I have a question about the park... Can we take whatever car we have and go there to drive and have fun? I'm not from the US so I was wondering if we can do that.
It would be nice if they positioned this to be closer to a Cherokee Trailhawk competitor. IMO there is an unfilled gap for offroad-capable crossovers that have good predicted reliability.
Torque vectoring and traction control are the 2 best technologies the early 2nd millennium automotive scene will have ever seen. If i'm not mistaken, torque vectoring was pioneered by Mitsubishi while traction control was from Mercedes but developed by Land Rover to the rotary knob systems that we see now.
So...considering TFL, Redline and KBB released pretty much the exact same video at the same time, and the three videos all appeared in my feed in a row...are we *ever* going to get a collab with all my favorite auto channels? Still waiting!! Let’s make it happen people :)
I am not a fan of Honda products in general ( long boring story ) but I will admit that this Passport seems to be built to do just what Stephen talks about here. I would rarely ever take a vehicle like this off road. BUT, I know that if I have to,.I can get through that type of terrain. I think it will be a nice winter time daily driver. ( the all wheel drive system is what I am referring to here.) Good review TFL-C
Thanks! Price and luxury aside, for pure capability off road, how would you say it compares to Jeep Patriot 4WD manual for off roading? The Jeep Patriot has more ground clearance and better approach and departure angles I believe, but less HP and torque.
Great review, Thanks!! I like it except for too much blacked out, exterior is a little blah. Maybe the blah styling is due to the silver color. You didn't say which is AWD in the pricing! Is AWD standard with the EX-L, Touring, and Elite? Some reviewers are saying it rides hard and you feel the road bumps. Is that true?
I think that more aggressive off road courses should be used to showcase a vehicle's AWD capability. For example, in this case, I think a tougher off road course could have been chosen. Furthermore, I would suggest putting the FWD version of the Passport on the course to prove that an AWD vehicle is indeed warranted for the course. Then they can showcase the AWD capabilities of the Passport, and that makes it look better. Maybe kill momentum too on those hills on off road courses so that all the pressure is on the AWD system. And don't forget tires make a massive difference too.
Hey gents when the inevitable comparison comes between the Blazer and this. Please do not neglect to mention the passport is made in the USA and the Blazer is made In Mexico.
I love that it looks like the rear seats can fold completely flat, but what are the hatch opening size? Do you think you could get a sheet of plywood, even on a angle?
Isnt it because the companies fly them over to utah where they hold the press events? I dont think everyone just decides to go to moab all at the same time.
Wouldn’t it compete more with the highlander not the rugged 4Runner especially in the capability department but yet again the highland kinda also competes with the pilot so I am not really sure
People get butt hurt when they compare it to a 4 Runner because the 4 Runner is a more capable off road vehicle. However the Passport is more on road capable. It’s a good competition between the two depending on the consumers needs.
The Touring Elite seems to offer most of the extra options that I will have to pay more for if I buy another Grand Cherokee. I was looking at the Overland or Summit trim if I want everything the Elite has? My only problem is how much am I giving up in the driving and traction difference between the two vehicles. I drive cross country to Utah and spend the winter in challenging snow conditions. During the summer I drive 5 hours to Maine to sea Kayak. Often have to launch at low tide and drive on slippery rocks so off-road performance is important. Can the new Passport handle this as well as the Grand Cherokee?
What is your opinion on the 9 speed versus the 6 speed from Honda? I noticed the lag between shifts with the 9 speed and it's not as responsive at the 6 speed. What do you think?
I’ve seen the ridgeline do good off-road. This will be better for sure. I already want one. But I have a 2010 Murano LE that is very close to this. The new Murano is not even as good as the 2010
In the end it seems to cost as much as the Pilot. It has the same space as the CRV though. You're paying for off-roading. If you've priced a Jeep Wrangler lately the price is about par. In the end, the decision comes down to the kind of deal they will give you.
Good review. Not sure why two videos. The same intonation for every sentence gets old quickly. No one ever mentions how the display is part of the dash instead of popping out of the top of the dash like many models. Comparing this to a 4-Runner is comical...I suppose they both have 4 four doors, that’s a similarity ...
If you are on the market for a Honda, you can purchase them via leads makers CarsDirect.com or TrueCar. I've done that 4 times since 2006 and every time I was able to get plain Honda $1500 to $6000 below MSRP and equipped them myself. I was even able to special order one. Never walk-in to purchase a vehicle, that's the biggest mistake people do.
f181234 man no one can markup anything in Canada? How does businesses stay open markup = profit government controlled no markups = no profit and at that point why have a business? Are you sure “mark ups” are illegal and it’s not maybe price gouging that’s illegal
i visited the truecar site once and checked their prices for a vehicle i was curious about. it showed this curve reflecting what % of the time this car sells at different prices, but it says if you want actual quotes you have to complete a form. i made up a fake phone number but i used my real email address. because i was researching a toyota and i had purchased a toyota before and i was in the toyota database (gave my number to the service department), immediately (less than 1 second) after hit send my (real, which i did not provide truecar) phone started ringing off the hook and my email account, of course, was spammed for days. there was no quote sent as promised. i also got lots of solicitations from dealers of other brands i did not inquire about. you can EASILY beat whatever truecar says is a rare deal on the curve they show by just emailing all the dealers in your area. you can also go to those car buying services from AAA, sam's club (which uses truecar's database), costco, USAA, etc, which actually DO get you a real quote instead of just immediately selling your contact info to insurance companies and dealers, but their quote is still not as good as you could get just by emailing dealerships in your area. don't even listen to anyone talking about MSRP. except for a few west coast dealershjips, paying MSRP is unheard of. what you are shooting for is below invoice, which is what i bought my last vehicle for. lots of carmakers and dealerships regularly discount below invoice, especially high volume dealers in december.
Passport, Pilot & Ridgeline have the same captain front seats as the Odyssey and since it's all based on the Odyssey platform, I think this should be compared to the Toyota Sienna AWD... :-P
I wonder what would Honda do to compete with Toyota Land Cruiser. I'm a Honda fan. If Honda can do a little bit more than just family cars & cross overs (i.e. a truck to go against Toyota Tacoma), it would be nice.
John Maher size wise it would compete more with the 4Runner but you are very correct in terms of capability it competes with the Rav4 and now that the Rav4 has Toyotas new torque vectoring system I think the Rav4 would be better on the trails its smaller and has the new system as mentioned !!
RAV4 is compact, this is Midsize. However, this compares closer to the Highlander than the 4Runner just because the 4Runner is truck based. Toyota really doesn't have a midsize two-row crossover though, so nothing in their arsenal truly compares. The Nissan Murano, Ford Edge, and Hyundai Santa Fe are the only other midsize crossovers without a third row that I can think of, and all of those are definitely on-road biased, so this compares favorably against them for someone who wants light off-road utility without a third row or a truck frame. Not that I can think of many shoppers in that category; Most of these will go to on-road folks who want to look like they go off road.
Jaanfo Basically what I said but yeah the market here isn't very big people either want big 3 row crossover or compact crossover I think it will do okay just because it's a Honda but other than that it's nothing extraordinary
I hate all the people talking "it's not body on frame, so it's not a real offroader". The mythical Jeep Cherokee was unibody. The real measure of an offroader is the suspension. Live axles, legit. Double wishbone independent, okay. Transverse engine forcing a MacPherson strut suspension, you have a economy car that will fold a wheel under it in high lateral loads. This my friends, is an economy car pretending to be a SUV.
There is a video already done... it's the snow comparison. Just a spoiler alert, Acura has been perfecting their SH-AWD system for a good 15 years and it's the same hardware on the Honda.
D Kracker: Yes, I don’t like painted bumper covers on SUV’s or pickups. Trucks get bumped! With cladding, the inevitable scratches and dents are less noticeable and therefore easier to live with.

Does it have the same rear gearbox as Ridgeline? As i remember Ridgeline gearbox was overheated at some off road. There is video on this channel
I love your tunes
How does it compare to the Subaru Forester ? Seems like that should be in the same class?

In the end it seems to cost as much as the Pilot. It has the same space as the CRV though. You're paying for off-roading. If you've priced a Jeep Wrangler lately the price is about par. In the end, the decision comes down to the kind of deal they will give you.
Good review. Not sure why two videos. The same intonation for every sentence gets old quickly. No one ever mentions how the display is part of the dash instead of popping out of the top of the dash like many models. Comparing this to a 4-Runner is comical...I suppose they both have 4 four doors, that’s a similarity ...
For a big man like you how comfortable was your ride? Driving non stop for 3-4 hour?
ya take it up gold mine hill!!! I like the new Passport. Thanks TFL
Do you have to plug your phone into the USB for apple car play, or will it work with just bluetooth?
Pricing problem is Honda dealers will be adding $3k - $5k of fluff to the MSRP...
I hear they usually discount their vehicles well. I'm sure they up price on the Type R
0228mustang no markups are illegal in Canada 🇨🇦
f181234 man no one can markup anything in Canada?
Intro a la Quentin Tarantino hahah even the music
I wonder what would Honda do to compete with Toyota Land Cruiser. I'm a Honda fan. If Honda can do a little bit more than just family cars & cross overs (i.e. a truck to go against Toyota Tacoma), it would be nice.
Your music is too loud, but thanks for the review
What is the name of the music from the intro (the Western style music)?
Sick blue jays cap 🧢!
A Passport on the Ike would be great
I’d think this would complete with the RAV4 than the 4Runner.
Ford Edge
Toyota4__Life like what this video said, it kinda settles in the middle in terms of capabilities in midsize division. Crv is the counterpart of rav4.
I wanna see any honda AWD vs a RAV4
There is a video already done... it's the snow comparison. Just a spoiler alert, Acura has been perfecting their SH-AWD system for a good 15 years and it's the same hardware on the Honda.
Great review. Does anyone really like that piano black trim. I am NOT a fan.
D Kracker: Yes, I don’t like painted bumper covers on SUV’s or pickups. Trucks get bumped! With cladding, the inevitable scratches and dents are less noticeable and therefore easier to live with.
Thank you 🙏
