Pinetop Perkins -- How Long Blues

- July 7, 1913 - March 21, 2011--Pinetop Perkins began playing blues in the late 1920s, and was widely regarded as one of the best -- and certainly most enduring -- blues pianists. He forged a style that influenced three generations of piano players, and continues to be the yardstick by which great blues pianists are measured.
Born Willie Perkins in Belzoni, Mississippi in 1913, Pinetop started out playing guitar and piano at house parties and honky-tonks, but dropped the guitar in the 1940s after sustaining a serious injury in his left arm. He worked primarily in the Mississippi Delta throughout the 1930s and '40s, spending three years with Sonny Boy Williamson on the King Biscuit Time radio show on KFFA in Helena, Arkansas. Pinetop also toured extensively with slide guitar player Robert Nighthawk and backed him on an early Chess session. After briefly working with B.B. King in Memphis, Perkins barnstormed the South with Earl Hooker during the early '50s. The pair completed a session for Sam Phillips' famous Sun Records in 1953. It was at this session that he recorded his version of "Pinetop's Boogie Woogie," a song originally written and recorded by pianist Clarence "Pinetop" Smith -- the influential blues pianist who had died from a gunshot wound at age 24 in 1929. Although referred to as "Pinetop" when he played on King Biscuit in the 40s, it was his sensational version of this song that secured his lifelong nickname.
Although he has enjoyed success as a solo artist since the 1980s, Pinetop is known for holding down the piano chair in the great Muddy Waters Band for twelve years during the pinnacle of Muddy's career. Replacing Otis Spann in 1969, Pinetop helped shape the Waters sound and anchored Muddy's memorable combo throughout the seventies with his brilliant piano solos. In 1980, Pinetop and other members of Muddy's crew struck out on their own and formed the Legendary Blues Band -- a group that recorded two records for Rounder and toured extensively, culling several GRAMMY® nominations.
Perkins won a Grammy in February for best traditional blues album for "Joined at the Hip: Pinetop Perkins & Willie "Big Eyes" Smith." That win made Perkins the oldest Grammy winner, edging out late comedian George Burns, who was 95 when he won in the spoken category for "Gracie: A Love Story" in 1990.
Pinetop Perkins passed away peacefully at home on
Monday, March 21, 2011 in Austin, TX at the age of 97.

i knew pinetop, he was my friend...cared for him and traveled with him...he had a heart of gold and i never heard him say a bad word about anyone.
some of you could have learned a thing or two from the old man...god bless you Top!
I just found him mentioned by Daryl Davis. He taught Daryl how to play the piano.
You probably ran into him, he's hard to miss. What a great guy. I'm always happy to see comments like yours on UA-cam.
I met him in a cab in 2010 when times were hard here in Austin. I guess I am fortunate. Super nice guy, funny too.
@@allenjackson9399 Were you a cab driver? He knew a ton of them from getting rides home after his usual Antone's Gig/Hangout, I took him to the Grammy's when he won with Willie Big Eyes Smith...loved them both.
mr.jimmiesboy Yes i was. Was working real estate and had troubles so i took a night job as a cab driver. You guessed it..Antones!!
word..
we have to keep this music alive!
I STILL play much of this stuff in MY Bluesband
I knew Pinetop Perkins personally. My partner Dante Kobek and I Pete Wehle formed a "Blues Inferno," promotion company when we both lived in South Bend, Indiana. We formed the company mainly because we got tired of going to Chicago and seeing our Blues buddies and coming back late in the AM back in South Bend from Chicago. Anyway, Pinetop was one of the very first acts that we promoted at the old Z.B. Falcons club in South Bend. I do remember Pinetop saying to me....."You find em' and I'll grind em"." Yep, that was old Pinetop what a guy and what a blues musician. I shall be forever grateful in knowing him here on planet Earth.
South Bend still plays/has a blues station- I look for it when I ' m in that area-
I hung out with this god for awhile when he was up in years, he was always dressed to the nines, a young girl on each arm and a drink in hand talking about heavy metal late in the morn.... a true God! what an honor for me that he would tolerate my company
That blues has a groove so deep you can drive train right through it!
For years ? What kind of bluesman are you? Who hasn't heard of this man if your any kind of a blues fan.
This music makes me the happiest man in the world. It makes me think about how rich I am!! 'cause this makes me realize the beautiful soul I've got and you all people, this music is for people with a great heart and beautiful soul :D

Finest piano blues man !!
BjavaBbotBme Hi Bea. I had been listening to 'rag-time' piano,&,after a while, wanted to hear blues,'on the ivories',so,I selected Pinetop.
I met Pinetop one New Years Eve at a blues club/bar in Chicago, probably in the mid 80s. I was dating a blues guitarist at the time. Loved his music and Pinetop was one gracious, talented gentleman. Have never forgotten that special New Years Eve, his music and what a sweetheart he seemed to be…very humble.
This is a great blues musician AND that piano seems exactly in tune & a high quality one because all those wacky minors, & sevenths & sustained chords come through so beautifully when Pinetop hammers them.
what joy n seeing a man who loves his job
He us adorable lol sharp piano picker as well

Thank you my dear old friend, for all you taught me. Your memory will stay with us our whole lives. You were and still are an inspiration and will remain a legend. We in the blues world, will miss you deeply. Rest in Peace.
I didn't know he played piano for muddy waters....wonderful blues...
How long, how long will this immortal gem stay alive? Just about everybody played it, but I never get tired of it, it's definitely one of my all-time favorites. I also loved Jimmy Rushing and Count Basie doing it... way back in my younger days!

Une des meilleures versions de la chanson de Leroy Carr (1905-1935)
One of the best version of the Leroy Carr's song
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful song and all these informations about Pinetops Perkins! I didn't know him untill today! Someone says he's not a "good pianist", I don't play the piano so I can't say if this person is right or wrong...But there's one thing I know for sure: my ears love his playing!!!! A belgian blues fan...
If he makes music that people love, then he's a good pianist. What other criterion could there be?
Very good blues piano played a long time.

I got to see Pinetop perform live at The Bayou with The Nighthawks. Back in the mid-70's. Was underage, but bought some Coors at Dixie Liquor; smoked a big fat fatty fatty and snuck into that Georgetown Bar when the bouncer got distracted by a cute lady wanting to get her three girlfriends in for free.. Stood rfont row for most of the show.... Incredible talent......and a lasting lifetime memory.
I feel his music
Rest well Pinetop Perkins. Thank you for all you did.
My mother used to bartend at the club Pinetop considered home for many years, much later in life. Regrettably, I only met him once - played bass for him on Mojo Workin' when I was 22, a little drunk and then some... so this morning I found myself crying when the subject came up. If only I had listened, rather than letting the ego-muchies and the unfun-FunK take over, I would have heard true knowledge! Awesome! R.I.F., Pinetop!
Jibrail Jones Thank you for this
Gorgeous!!!
Why oh why no more music like this. Sunday lunch an feeling comfortable and lazy
The best music!
My friend Michael Bloomfield loved you, man. Say hello to Michael and Muddy for us all, Pinetop. See you in Blue Heaven.

RIP.
I listened all of them. Really I was in an other the world. :)))
he's amazing :D love it
makes you dream
Pinetop and Otis Spann. True Blues pianist!
and Memphis Slim
This is probably my second favourite version. Jimmy Yancey has done an absolutely fabulous piano solo of this number. (He's also recorded it with his wife singing. I don't like her and think she spoils that version.) The piano solo version is the great one. Simple, but incredibly haunting slow blues.
nice song, i like it :)
Love it....
This, right here, is what its all about. And I mean what its All About. As a Bluesman, as a musician, this is the unadorned, decorated buh loo hooze.
