We have a 33 year old umbrella and have had him for 31 years. If you don’t dedicate enrichment time every day you’ll be disappointed. Great message Doctor!
please listen to what the vet said at the end, think a lot before purchasing this (or any other) birds, check other videos about moluccan, see how loud they can scream, how they can destroy anything with their beaks no matter how friendly they are just because they got bored or thought this table looks fun to chew on, they're fantastic pets/friends, but they need so much time, care, attention, money (vet, food, new toys all the time since they destroy them etc etc), think about it, once you done, think it over again, they deserve it
I'm only 12, I got my bird and I had to give him up, we taught him so much, that had been his 3rd rehoming. He learned yo speak and dance and sing. And when I have him up he called for my mom ( His best friend sometimes I thou ht he wanted to mate with her bc of how he acted with pecking and favortisim) he cried and screamed he said " MOMM MOMMM HIII MOMMM AHHHHH" and I remember crying, but soon after the people we sold him to had sent us pictures of him on their shoulder ( He never stood on our shoulder bc he would be grumpy and we'd be scared, my mom picked him up and I played with him ) But overall he messed up some stuff, and I learned that if he messes it up it's my fault for not watching him or paying attention to his movements and his voice changes. He also would get grumpy if we left and he was home for 2 hour( even if the tv is on SPONEGEBOB, HIS FAVORITE!) so yeah, and I had no experience. But my passion for animals will always support me within new pets

@@donnafinney9192 if she was to give us a detailed message of bird care this video would go over 10 minutes. she kept it short, gave the warning. the rest is up to people to research the birds, all information you need is already out there in the internet.
I’ve had three umbrella cockatoos for 26, 27 and 28 years. They’re wonderful birds. My birds are very friendly and will talk to anyone and allow you to handle them in all types of situations. But then they go everywhere and do everything with us. They even go camping. They love the outdoors.
Awe, I wanted to adopt a bird that age or older but never did fine one in the tristate area where I am that didn't have severe plucking problems (normally I wouldn;t care about plucking, but the family went through something tragic in relation to it so we couldn't do it). So now, yah, we have Onni the baby cockatoo. Lalala is his vocabulary. But we are working on it. LOL.
I wonder what the oldest memory that bird has. Not what science claims it can have but what it actually has. I am sure this bird has years of knowledge and experience. Imagine the intelligence of such a creature.
I've had parrots for 34 years. I'm convinced they never forget anything. Every so often they come out with something from many years ago that I had forgotten, but they haven't! They're not only highly intelligent, but have prodigious memories as well. It's also been established that birds think faster than we do, due to the different structure of their brains and the shorter nerve pathways that are dense with synapses. When I ask them if they want something or to do something, I habitually repeat it 2 or 3 times (for no good reason, I guess like how people foolishly speak louder and more slowly to non-native language speakers, lol), and then I remember reading about how fast they think, and I think they must think I'm rather slow and dense, but they patiently wait until I'm done repeating myself, 🤗
Great advice for people who are so impulsive in getting an animal when they haven't a clue as to the responsibility that goes into taking care of an animal. Then what they do is, they just throw it away like it's nothing. Birds & parrots require a lot of time & attention. They need mental stimulation. The doctor is kind & the bird can feel it & that's why there's no problem with her examining the bird. Love that parrot 💘
Beautiful bird. 58yrs old is amazing. He is in beautiful condition. A lot of times you see them with their feathers all plucked out. I hate to see birds when they get that way. Makes me think they are bored or neglected.
Ted Nugent - Day-um! So, having a cockatoo is like having a two-year-old running around with pliers who weighs up to 35 lbs?!? That’s a challenge. Love to watch them on UA-cam though.
Is there any way to tell the age of a bird ,I just rescued an umbrella cockatoo 3 months ago but I don't know how old he is , plus he's aggressive if my hand gets close,
Dave Scheer there are some subtle ways to get a rough idea but no way to tell exactly. I would recommend you have him checked out by an experienced avian vet who can help ensure he's healthy, give you a rough idea about age, and help you with his behavior. issues.

It's traumatic for a pet to lose its humans that its comfortable with and be with new people it doesn't even know. You can't just do whatever with these little lives and expect everything to be peachy keen. They do have feelings and emotions. Hell, people can't even treat other people properly. I'm ready for another dog and he/she will stay with me until one of us dies just like my previous dog that passed away earlier this year at 13. If he was still being took care of like he was when this video was made then yes he would still be alive. The bird can live to be anywhere from 100 to 200 years old and longer.
Man... I used to have an exotic bird, and I thought the same thing. They belong in trees, not (literally) imprisoned in a cage :( so I won't get another one
Sl S These birds are bred in captivity and not taken from the wild anymore. They would have no idea how to take care of themselves in the wild. When cared for properly, captive-bred parrots can have very happy long lives.
People with parrots don't keep them locked up in cages. You've obviously never had one. They have a cage but the door is usually open so they're standimg on the top playing or they're on their owner.
Captivity doesn't mean not locked up. It means keeping them from their natural habitat in the jungle. I would love one but could never be so cruel. Imagine if you were the parrot would you like to be thousands of miles from your home and family?
As a vet she should know that stroking his back like she did is the bird equivalent of making a sexual advance. The bird thinks she's asking to mate with him.
You have a very good point here. In general, petting should be confined to the head, not the body, so as not to send a confusing sexual message. In this case, however, this bird is a long term patient that was exhibiting no sexual behavior and that is very used to being handled. But thank you for you very helpful comment.
That bird is beyond that kind of stuff. You should be able to see that. He knows her behavior is only gentle and loving. The bird has 'been around the block' and knows the difference.
Man, Everything she just said is on the money. If you want a bird, never, ever, make a Cockatoo your first bird. They are a handful, and can be extremely dangerous to a person who has no exspierience with these animals. However, l made that mistake, and beleave me,,,l learned all these things,THE HARD WAY. I at one time owned a cockatiel, but saddly she died in my hands, from being egg bound. And it DEVASTATED ME. She was a baby when l got her, and she bonded to me quickly, and followed me every where. And l thought l knew what l was in doing when l rescued Peaches, a 15 year old Mulucan Cockatoo. I WAS WRONG. But l have had her now for nearly ,7 years, and we have COME A LONG WAY.Sgr was severely neglected, and abused, had been EXSPOSED to violence, and screaming family fighting, and was an emotional, and physical MESS. She was plucking herself, to the be point of bleeding severely, her chest was virtually plucked clean, and she had a broken tail. She was unable, and still is unable to fly, due to her chewing her wing feathers. P suffered countless vicious bites, to the bone. These birds,"Parrots"",have tremendous jaw strength, and is nothing to inflict very ugly bites, and l own the scares to prove it. None the on less, after none stop one, on one, contact, round the clock relationship, she today is a marvelous, very content, happy girl, and is a favorite, at the vet's office. Everyone there knows, and loves Peaches. They are extremely intelligent, and can offer a very special loveing companion to the right person. One more thing, they need alot of care, nail triming, bathing, and are quite exspensive, as bird gets don't come cheap. And she has needed several trips to the vet, some 100 miles away. So my advice would be should you desire getting involved with these marvelous creatures, would be to get a cockatiel, first, a WONDERFULL, LOVEING bird, but if you do not have the time to invest, forget it. For in my opinion, a bird is not an ornament, to be locked in a cage, and that's it. If your not going to make them a member of if the family, don't bother, for a bird just locked in a cage, and nothing more, is as cruel abuse be as any. My Peaches cage by is open all day , she is free to come and go at her choosing, and when she wants contact, if l am not occupied, she gets it. Is she nuts she’s trying to sell this type off bird yes you have to give them more attention then a real life baby if not they scream the house down that’s why there known as Velcro birds off course it looks cute and cuddly right now when your stroking it then leave it for 20 min or less it will scream for your attention if it does not get it it will pluck its feathers out and mutilated it’s self , don’t buy one they don’t belong as our pets they need to be in the wild or have a partner bird in a large enclosed area and one in the garden please let people know this ? Don’t show a bird looking all cute and tell not tell the whole truth on owning one your a vet ? You should know better this video will make people go out and buy one without knowing spending time with it is not just spending time it means you need to be with it 24 - 7
Make sure you want a cockatoo first then when you think you're ready, do some more thinking also do as much research as you can find out about their life style, how they eat, what they eat, how they sleep do they need complete darkness in to sleep can they can have a little bit of light yes, no, maybe.
Find out as much as you can before you even think about getting one don't buy or adopt on impluse. think, think, think, think and oh yeah think
Not suppose to pet or scratch their body just their head.
