The tourist vs Kenyan prices actually has interesting origins.Kenya used to market itself exclusively for high end tourists. Budget tourists, like the British who like to throng the coasts of Spain could not afford Kenya's luxury safari and beach packages. Back in 2000s when election violence was commonplace, Western countries would react disproportionately by claiming their citizens would be in danger if they travelled to Kenya and essentially banned them from coming. Obviously that had a devastating effect on the tourism industry. So tourist establishments and destinations, which were facing complete ruin decided to set separate prices to appeal to the domestic market and that saved the industry. And it stuck. And it's a good thing too because it was domestic tourism that kept the industry afloat when foreign tourism all but dried up during Covid. Now there are families from upcountry who couldn't afford it before but make a point to vacation at the coast every year.
Very true! From the onset of Safari tourism which was pioneered in Kenya, the target market was the filthy rich, aristocrats and their peers and corporate clientele. Budget tourists and backpackers are a recent phenomena hence the pain in pricing to suit every category.

Plus it’s our country. Why should l be charged the same amount in my own backyard? Charge the tourist more and with their exchange rate I’m sure it’s a lot cheaper. South Africa does the same with certain tourist spots like Cape Point. There’s different prices for Citizens, SADEC region & the rest of the world.

You have not seen diverse until you have been to South Africa. I've traveled to a lot of African countries and I've yet to come across an African country which offers as many options of eateries as South Africa. The country oozes with different eating options from local cuisines, American, Asian, Italian, Greek- think it and chances are that down the street you'll find it. Also it has to do with the fact that it is a very racially diverse country thus there is no short of diverse cuisines. Thus from a South African traveling in most parts of the continent they will find that the food options and taste is limited and bland compared to a country like South Africa.

Balanced honest review. Nairobbery is a local term that is used by Kenyans to compare crime in Nairobi and other Kenyan cities/towns and is by no means a comparison to other cities in Africa or the world. But many have misinterpreted the term, exaggeraring crime in Nairobi/ Kenya by people who never understood its origins well and many people just regurgigate what they hear wothout actually having experienced the crime themselves. Even the rough streets in Nairobi CBD where incidents like phone snatching happen are very few and it does not across the whole CBD or city.The safe steers and neighbourhoids actually outnumber the rough ones. Many who are used to the ugali consistency cannot stand pap either, do not surprising there. I guess it is what people grow up getting used to that influences these preferences. Your dislike for coriander seems your personal preference and yes generally people have an acquired taste to food. Social media streets can be rough, i tend to give hard tackles to the rude ones but i think that for you as a UA-camr, you will have to develop a thick skin and just pass on some. You are a likeable, positive and honest person so those people are just being mean for nothing or simply riding on the negative comments from others. In Wasini, they have to verify your nationality. In Kenya's National parks, the Kenyans pay way less than the foreigners because the government considers the parks their National Heritage. Zambia also had major loadshedding at the peak of it we would go for 20hours in a day without electricity and that was from like 2015 to 2020 but then the government upgraded our energy generation capacity and we haven't had loadshedding since 2020

Kenya's traffic is organized chaos you will get the rhythm and not be so afraid Kenyans are also careful otherwise you'd be seeing accidents all the time we don't even hit animals, the ugali is only meant to be eaten with soup and vegetables and meat stew that's how you soften it sorry about the corruption and harassments that needs to change all the others likes and dislikes were spot on am a big fan and ope you get all the best Kenya has to offer. Yes police corruption is a reality, the driving is super crazy, and sometimes Kenyans can be very blunt on certain issues (in most such cases they don't even mean what they are saying in real life. Our own President, now former, had to literally run away from the social media). All in all, we love ❤ you and we love your content.
Don't take the tourist and local's prices personally. The government realised we were too dependent on tourist to promote business in those tourist destinations or parks and when tourism was down, revenue was down so it was a way or promoting local tourism to encourage Kenyans to also visit and enjoy these places within our country and it has boosted the business and like especially after COVID, nations should learn their biggest benefactors or clients need to come from within especially when global movement is restricted.... I said it before, u are so much on point and u have found all the ups and downs within 60 days😁... Kenya is a wonderful place and its people are just as great as the country is beautiful wherever you go. But! Because of corruption and those "Big Man" that can bully you anywhere and out of nowhere, u find yourself in situations, that you would never expect. It's somehow accepted that people push other people around and the only solution to that, u have to become arrogant and difficult yourself, the moment u bow down and accept the treatment they will ran you over. About the food, you know as a Luo (from Kisumu) we are used to the hard or tough ugali, especially if you have a nice meat stew or local vegetables. 3. About the corruption and the bad behavior it is a big issue, especially among the police service. It is one thing that will take years to correct. 4. Traffic and bad driving is especially a big issue in Nairobi. There is just alot of lawlessness and rogueness. 5. About social media, that is a battle you cannot win, it is good you learnt to assume even the mean comments. For instance, on Twitter Kenyans are notorious, even chased the 4th president away from it. Yeah, being behind keyboard and faceless has made a lot of guys mean, hateful and just stupid without the consequence of being punched in the face. I don't know what fuels it, maybe people just are jealous of the little you have.

I hate corruption with all my heart, especially the one which is committed on our day to day lives infront of us. I was dissapointed in Nigeria, a simple que to a bank you gotta pay someone so they help you, things just cant go in order. If you do not have money you'd wait there the whole day.

Different prices,well Kenya’s economy is solely dependant on agriculture and tourism this is how it manages being 6th largest economy in Africa.We do not have natural resources in big quantities like oil in Nigeria or gold and diamonds in SA.So its cheaper for locals to encourage domestic tourism,theres also a price for members of East african community and permanent residents in Kenya and also a price for tourists.

Loadshedding is also scheduled…we have an app that notifies each area of when they’ll get load-shed. Depending on the current stage of loadshedding, you might not have electricity for 2 hours at a time or 4 in some cases. But load shedding isn’t a daily thing as well..there are some years where it’s really bad and you’ll get load shed maybe 3 - 6 months then the rest of the year there’s no load shedding…some years will be really good where you’ll get 2 years straight without it… Another thing to consider is that although SA is the largest producer of electricity on the continent, we also sell a lot of it to our SADC neighbouring countries…so Eskom’s (our power producer) electricity has to go a long way
Do you mean to tell me in South Africa you pay the same rate as foreigners when it comes to game parks and tourist spots? The reason in Kenya we have the two tier system is to encourage locals to visit the country and to reduce the over reliance on foreigners.

I m a Kenyan who lived in South Africa and hated their mixed spiced food, South African food was just mixed spices nothing else,and the south african cook chicken legs which they sell in supermarket while in Kenya chicken legs are used to make chicken soups, South african are not used to fresh Kenyan food for they fry everything, and most people line up in KFC Nandos etc to eat,while we Kenyans are used to fresh cooked food eg githeri, pilau, Ugali with different vegs eg managu, etc I missed Kenyan food eg nduma, sweet potatoes etc while in south africa.And most south africans have entittlement about their country as very developed but are shocked about a country ,like Kenya catching up in comparison with South african. Many young south african girls sleep with old men, even marry them and its common in south africa for girls to get pregnant when very young even at nine years I witnessed that in their schools Over all we Kenyans are much more aware of world news, than South Africans

I like the honest perspectives. Glad you haven't tried "mashakura" Kikuyu food. It is bland, potato and cabbage filled with copious amounts of soupy broth. Your distaste for coriander (dhania) would be quickly overcome. Regarding "tourist prices", local charges are subsidised to encourage them to visit tourist attractions. You might have noticed the price for school students is the lowest. If prices were to level out, most locals would be unable to afford visiting our museums and parks. There is obviously a high cost to maintaining such facilities. Hope you enjoy the rest of your stay in Kenya!

Balanced honest review. Nairobbery is a local term that is used by Kenyans to compare crime in Nairobi and other Kenyan cities/towns and is by no means a comparison to other cities in Africa or the world. But many have misinterpreted the term, exaggeraring crime in Nairobi/ Kenya by people who never understood its origins well and many people just regurgigate what they hear wothout actually having experienced the crime themselves. Even the rough streets in Nairobi CBD where incidents like phone snatching happen are very few and it does not across the whole CBD or city.The safe steers and neighbourhoids actually outnumber the rough ones. Many who are used to the ugali consistency cannot stand pap either, do not surprising there. I guess it is what people grow up getting used to that influences these preferences. Your dislike for coriander seems your personal preference and yes generally people have an acquired taste to food. Social media streets can be rough, i tend to give hard tackles to the rude ones but i think that for you as a UA-camr, you will have to develop a thick skin and just pass on some. You are a likeable, positive and honest person so those people are just being mean for nothing or simply riding on the negative comments from others. Seem like you encountered rude extortionist cops..glad you had the document with you otherwise they would've likely taken money from you and threatened you with arrest. Very disgusting really!

Even in Nairobi CBD, it's relatively small rough part of the so-called "downtown" where your phone could get snatched.
Zambia also had major loadshedding at the peak of it we would go for 20hours in a day without electricity and that was from like 2015 to 2020 but then the government upgraded our energy generation capacity and we haven't had loadshedding since 2020

Kenya's traffic is organized chaos you will get the rhythm and not be so afraid Kenyans are also careful otherwise you'd be seeing accidents all the time we don't even hit animals, the ugali is only meant to be eaten with soup and vegetables and meat stew that's how you soften it sorry about the corruption and harassments that needs to change all the others likes and dislikes were spot on am a big fan and ope you get all the best Kenya has to offer. Yes police corruption is a reality, the driving is super crazy, and sometimes Kenyans can be very blunt on certain issues (in most such cases they don't even mean what they are saying in real life. Our own President, now former, had to literally run away from the social media). All in all, we love ❤ you and we love your content.
Don't take the tourist and local's prices personally. The government realised we were too dependent on tourist to promote business in those tourist destinations or parks and when tourism was down, revenue was down so it was a way or promoting local tourism to encourage Kenyans to also visit and enjoy these places within our country and it has boosted the business and like especially after COVID, nations should learn their biggest benefactors or clients need to come from within especially when global movement is restricted....

Kenya is a wonderful place and its people are just as great as the country is beautiful wherever you go. But! Because of corruption and those "Big Man" that can bully you anywhere and out of nowhere, u find yourself in situations, that you would never expect. It's somehow accepted that people push other people around and the only solution to that, u have to become arrogant and difficult yourself, the moment u bow down and accept the treatment they will ran you over.
Let's hope corruption and the attitude towards women will get better, I would also suggest price tags on any item or service, because I also hate that I can only shop with one of my friends to avoid a total robbery at shops...I do tip a lot, but they still trying to cheat me even when I go for a manicure...at least they try😅

First i have been waiting for this video because I know coming from S.A which developed than us here was going to be some sort of a reality check for us here . secondly,siz you're very objective.I think I would love to see more people from the south visit .... finally corruption stinks and the cost of corruption and it's implications to our economy is Soo huge and a times unbearable but with challenges comes an opportunity and for Kenya the opportunity is the 2010 constitution which when fully implemented we will have our country back...we love you
1. Loadshedding, hahaha, sorry for laughing and thanks for introducing me to that term.
2. About the food, you know as a Luo (from Kisumu) we are used to the hard or tough ugali, especially if you have a nice meat stew or local vegetables.
3. About the corruption and the bad behavior it is a big issue, especially among the police service. It is one thing that will take years to correct.
4. Traffic and bad driving is especially a big issue in Nairobi. There is just alot of lawlessness and rogueness.
5. About social media, that is a battle you cannot win, it is good you learnt to assume even the mean comments. For instance, on Twitter Kenyans are notorious, even chased the 4th president away from it. Yeah, being behind keyboard and faceless has made a lot of guys mean, hateful and just stupid without the consequence of being punched in the face. I don't know what fuels it, maybe people just are jealous of the little you have.
I think we don't experience that's why we don't even know what that mean

Different prices,well Kenya’s economy is solely dependant on agriculture and tourism this is how it manages being 6th largest economy in Africa.We do not have natural resources in big quantities like oil in Nigeria or gold and diamonds in SA.So its cheaper for locals to encourage domestic tourism,theres also a price for members of East african community and permanent residents in Kenya and also a price for tourists.

Loadshedding is also scheduled…we have an app that notifies each area of when they’ll get load-shed. Depending on the current stage of loadshedding, you might not have electricity for 2 hours at a time or 4 in some cases. But load shedding isn’t a daily thing as well..there are some years where it’s really bad and you’ll get load shed maybe 3 - 6 months then the rest of the year there’s no load shedding…some years will be really good where you’ll get 2 years straight without it…
Another thing to consider is that although SA is the largest producer of electricity on the continent, we also sell a lot of it to our SADC neighbouring countries…so Eskom’s (our power producer) electricity has to go a long way

The reason in Kenya we have the two tier system is to encourage locals to visit the country and to reduce the over reliance on foreigners.

They are just hidden in serene places and some you access through reservation. In the capital as opposed to Mombasa you'll find everything that you may want anywhere in the world. Nairobi is ranked 12th globally and 1st in Africa by exparts for a reason

I m a Kenyan who lived in South Africa and hated their mixed spiced food, South African food was just mixed spices nothing else,and the south african cook chicken legs which they sell in supermarket while in Kenya chicken legs are used to make chicken soups, South african are not used to fresh Kenyan food for they fry everything, and most people line up in KFC Nandos etc to eat,while we Kenyans are used to fresh cooked food eg githeri, pilau, Ugali with different vegs eg managu, etc I missed Kenyan food eg nduma, sweet potatoes etc while in south africa.And most south africans have entittlement about their country as very developed but are shocked about a country ,like Kenya catching up in comparison with South african. Many young south african girls sleep with old men, even marry them and its common in south africa for girls to get pregnant when very young even at nine years I witnessed that in their schools Over all we Kenyans are much more aware of world news, than South Africans

I like the honest perspectives. Glad you haven't tried "mashakura" Kikuyu food. It is bland, potato and cabbage filled with copious amounts of soupy broth. Your distaste for coriander (dhania) would be quickly overcome. Regarding "tourist prices", local charges are subsidised to encourage them to visit tourist attractions. You might have noticed the price for school students is the lowest. If prices were to level out, most locals would be unable to afford visiting our museums and parks.
