I really miss that guy. I have not been able to watch any of his docs since he died untill today.. Loved the way he pulled out his smoke as soon as he hit the door at Katz. I feel bad for how troubled he was...for some reason I think he hated himself. My Newfie dog died years ago and my work partner bought me Bourdain's book " A Chefs Tour"...she was just trying to cheer me up. Great read!...became a big fan of all his work...learned alot. Thank you Anthony Bourdain
I came in on a bus from Kansas City via Providence in 2009. In Kansas City, we have like five pound BBQ sandwiches, so I wasn't expecting much from Katz' Delicatessen. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised. I paid like fifteen bucks for a pastrami on rye and a knish. I was still eating it six days later. Go to Katz' Deli, if you're from out of town. It's near the Brooklyn Bridge and WTC memorial. Don't be an idiot and miss the chance to eat the best deli sandwiches in America.
The one thing I love about katz's aside from the great food, and I'm 63 years old is that katz's deosnt change, it's exactly the way it was when I was a child and it had been that way before I was born, it's a time capsule which is so rare. there are many places that are retro, designed to look and have the feel of the old days but they never actually do of course, this is the real deal, it's not Disney. The place wasnt made for tourists, it's no tourist trap, tourists go there, I hope they never ever change. If you want a cheap sandwich that tastes that way, there are plenty of fast food joints to get a crappy burger or whatever.
Katz has got the best deli sandwiches ever. Coming from Detroit, I know of some good corned beef, but Katz truly is the holy mecca of delis. I defy you to find a better sandwich like that in New York.
I used to work in a deli : great brand of pastrami & cornbeef & pastrami & cornbeef straight out the cooker without cooling with water ; take taste out ;; alot of ny custumer go to other deli for pastrami & cornbeef ???
Loved Anthony Bourdain. Read kitchen confidential before he was a household name. As far as pastrami goes, Harold's in Edison NJ. Had it at Carnegie deli and it was not good. Never been to Katz's
"Back in the day"actual New Yawkers went to Katz's deli for a meal. Now after years of media hype, tourists take selfies and celebrities bring their film crews to "KATZ'S DELI"( as seen on TV, social media, and in trendy foodie "lifestyle" magazine articles). Like the "Original Nathans,"it just ain't the same thing. But go anyway......
Tourist here; Been there and bought the T-shirt. They sell T-shirts too. The closest I got to being mugged in the neighbourhood was paying for the meat between two slices of bread.
i'm a canadian refugee from rene levesque, now living in miami beach, i remember chenoys on the west island and the brown derby on van horne, used to go there with my family in the 70's, loved their ikra with onions, heard from someone it shut down; god i miss montreal smoked meat, does anyone know if i can pick some up in south florida? miss montreal too, my montreal, pre-pq, 1973- 1981, my beloved duddy kravitz montreal
the food here is worth the money. i do feel like im being ripped off, but i keep coming back because the pastrami and turkey are legendary and theres NOTHING like it anywhere else
Countless "fusion" restaurants have opened and closed within a few months on the Lower East SIde, but Katz's Deli has been open for years. It shows that if you keep things simple and high quality, you can still turn a profit.
@nyrmcfc6814 Bourdain is far superior to Fieri, I agree with you, but I must say Guy's show Diners Drive-in's and Dives really showcases some of the best blue-collar food in America. It's the type of every day, non-pretentious "peasant food" of America that I'm sure Bourdain appreciates.
the two best pastrami sandwiches are 2nd avenue deli and katz deli. katz should be a landmark since of how good and to be honest i think katz is the best but someone will disagree. LONG LIVE KATZ
I like Bourdain,,,sometimes hes a little full of himself, but hes a hard worker who knows what hes talking about,,,Yeah hes a little pretentious,,,but then at times very self critical when he pontificates too much,,,,hey ,,at the end of the day ,,,your still not bored with Bourdain,,,,Hey Bourdain,,,don;t ever change!!!!!
I've personally dropped $180 on a dinner for two and it was one of the best eating experiences I've ever had. For good food, and I mean REALLY good food, price is just about meaningless.
@sharkl11 LOL, good question, I wish I knew. Never been to Katz's but my friend from NY says Langer's is better and I can't imagine a better Pastrami sandwich than Langer's.
Can’t agree with him more. If you want Katz’s pastrami, get your ass to NYC and get some. Get a lot for all I care. And, if you’ve never been to NYC, please do so before you die. Its absolutely amazing.
nah man. the quality of each piece of meat is lower but they pile it on really high. having a huge impossible to eat sandwich isn't as good as having the best quality pastrami and turkey out there
Kosher beef always costs more. They do give you good quality for your money, though. And please do not spell "Jew" the wrong way. If you were trying to imply that we're thrifty, that's fine, but if you want cheap, go to Subway.
@jvandugan I always wonder how some people can go through life without being able to tell when something is done exceptionally well. A good wine... these people drink Kendall Jackson. A good car.... They drive Toyotas and think people who buy BMW's are just buying a name. These same people eat Boar's Head pastrami injected with salt brine and liquid smoke and think it's just as good as real homemade cured pastrami which takes 3 weeks to make. I wish I couldn't tell. I'd save a lot of money.
we are glad u left then. katz's in atx may not be no deli in NY but dont even try and talk about the food scene here thats ignorant and ridiculous. go refine ur pallet
What a bunch of crap. Everybody knows that Katz's is totally down the drain. It's turned into a complete dump and tourist trap. You can get a better pastrami sandwich at practically any diner. Try the new place right up the street on Houston if you don't believe me.
i dont think so if you are downtown. i wouldnt tell anyone to make a trip from upper west side down to katz's, because you can get something good in almost any area of the city. if you are near katz's, you should go
PartiZAn18 it used to work a deli for a long time had ton of pastrami eat pastrami is best with come out the cooker but i never to katz deli i hear their pastrami is prepared differently, handcut is better than the slicer pastrami

Yeah, what a legend. It was a sad day when he passed
Anthony Bourdain's show is def my favorite to watch.
such an iconic place, like hundreds of millions of visitors, or what? everyone in the world has been there. how amazing.
Bourdain had such a swagger about things… a polite, but powerful, swagger
Rip Tony 😢, still can’t believe you’re gone
He was an atheist so he won't rest in peace without Yah is Salvation Jesus Yah'shua. No rest for the unrepentant unbelievers wickeds.
Wtf nutcase comment
I miss Anthony very much. I'll hit up Katz's Deli when I'm oin New York this month and a few of his other favs
I'm a chef and I totally agree with you. I've been to Katz's and it's the shit. I sat at the Harry Met Sally table.

Just because a place is a tourist attraction doesn’t mean its a tourist trap - new yorker
Chef and Author Anthony Bourdain has chosen the Katz's Deli as one of his top ten favorite places in NEW YORK CITY, so here he is...
Tourist here; Been there and bought the T-shirt. They sell T-shirts too.
The closest I got to being mugged in the neighbourhood was paying for the meat between two slices of bread.
