FMS Reflex Gyro How-To (Sort of)

  • I made this fairly quick video to show someone how to add a custom configuration to the FMS Reflex gyro programming software. I have never actually reprogrammed a Reflex gyro for a non-FMS aircraft and flown it. And, I don't know what all the values should be, but I did figure out how to create a new set of configuration files and get the FMS Reflex software to read them. I've been reprogramming Spektrum AS3X/SAFE receivers for 3 or 4 years, so I do know a little bit about how they work. I also have some experience with PID controllers.

    Hello out there. MODELMODE stands for 0= normal fixed wing 1= fixed wing 2= flying wing 3= V tail
    You only have to pick a similar model and set the gyro direction right.
    I picked the Flash for a flying wing and changed the direction of aileron and elevator and it works for me.
    MODELMODE =2 for flying wing

    Thank you so much for sharing this useful info. I needed to reverse the gyro action on my rudder. After watching this video I went to the model file and changed the rudder from 1 to 0 and the problem was solved. There's actually a lot of good stuff in the help section of the parameter file.

      @@txkflier I aquired an old hobby king 1400mm j3 cub and wanted to possibly gift it to a friend as a RTF with a gyro but all I had laying around was the reflex out of my Pa-18 1300mm which was perfect except if the reflex orientation was correct, the elevator was reversed. So your walkthrough of editing the parameters really saved me from having to buy a spektrum setup or similar.

    Thanks for what you provided - it's a great deal more than what I had going into this process. I wish you knew what the meaning is for each individual field inside the parameter file. That would make it complete. I sent a message to FMS requesting that information but who knows if they'll comply with my request - probably not. If I do get lucky I'll come back here and let everyone know what I uncovered. It's probably not as difficult as we're making it to safely modify an aircraft parameter file but that's just a guess. If push comes to shove I'll modify the parameter file that I use in my high-speed non FMS airplane by reducing ONLY the gain entries for AIL/ELE/RUD and test fly to see what happens. Maybe someone else will already have done what I'm suggesting by the time I get around to it 🙂.

      well my thoughts on the video wow but let say this my pitts 1400 mm came with this reflex 2
      had all the wires marked to go on your receiver on the bottom of fuse it had a sticky tape on it to lay your reflex gyro on it wires to receiver facing the nose of plane hook it to spare channel 5 put on a single switch to turn it on -off on my Futaba set up my throws turn on my transmitter plugged battery on turn on gyro it on a series of a test ailerons and rudder elevator moved on all directions for two seconds it set picked airplane moved it up down side ways all the throws nose down elevator recovered side ways rudder recovered dropped wing left _right recovered to neutral so said on a fixed wing aircraft it does matter left ,right up, down it recover to neutral just saying...........out bub8

      meant to say on a fix wing it does not matter prop or EDF jet it will recover to neutral

    So Why Did You Remove all the other files when you find your model just double click and it loads those files automatically... I don't understand your reasoning. Thanks

    My brain hurts..... I'm wandering if a new reflex v2 out of the box , (as in purchased not with a plane ) ....if it has a basic all round default factory setting so you can then put it in any plane and do your set up on your TX...... good stuff 🙄😎

      I would think the gyro gains would be set to zero just like an open stock Spektrum AS3X/SAFE receiver and it would pass the signals straight through to the servos. And if that’s the case, why would you want it. You have to make sure the gyro reacts in the proper direction; otherwise, it’ll destroy your plane.

      @@txkflier I slept in and have thought a lot more about my attempt at this...... My brain still hurts but I just rewatched your video........I originally thought finding the closet plane would be enough..... if what I'm trying didn't work..... I've found the the reflex directions were backwards.....I'm thinking the servo direction on the superez maybe opposite to what I have as I mounted the V2 same as superez...... I'm sure I heard you say that is changeable on the programming page...... what I'm now thinking is use the fms "easy trainer' file and it's reverseing setting if needed? Am I making sense? 🙃😉😎

      @@deanedeane4318 Ok, I've watched the video again to see what I said. As I said in the video, you need to pick an FMS plane that is similar to the one you have. The gyro will need to be mounted in your plane the same way it's mounted in the similar FMS plane. Otherwise, you'll have to edit the mounting parameters. After the gyro is mounted and wired up, you may need to change the channel reversing in your transmitter so that the sticks move the control surfaces in the proper direction. Then, the reversing in the gyro configuration must be set so that the gyro moves the surfaces in the proper direction to compensate for turbulence or make the plane self-level. I like to put my planes in self-level mode to check the gyro direction. I tilt my plane about 45° from level to the left, right, nose up, and nose down. When I raise a wingtip, the aileron on that tip should deflect upward (the same direction I moved the tip). Raise the other tip, and the aileron on that side should go up. Raise the tail and the elevator should deflect upward. Lower the tail, and the elevator should deflect downward (same direction the tail was moved). When I bring the plane back to level, the surfaces should come back to center. The next most critical setting is the gyro gain (that's the P of PID). Too high and it could make the surface oscillate at higher speeds. If the gain is too low, the gyro just doesn't compensate for turbulence as much as it should.
