    Your videos have been an immense help to me. I found your channel shortly after deciding to go into LIS and you helped me weight the pros and cons before diving in head first. Now I’m waiting on my acceptance letter from Evergreen State so I can move on to a Master’s at UW and start an actual career doing something I care about. Thank you :)

    Hi, thank you so much for your videos! I'm considering a Master in Information Studies program and I was wondering if you could do a video or a post on what other jobs, besides becoming a librarian, this master's degree could lead to. There is a list of jobs on the school's website but I was hoping you could explain more thoroughly what that means in terms of day-to-day work. Thank you again!

    Peter, that was a great overview. If you have experience with a faculty level job application/interview process, you might want to do a video on that. It can be a really overwhelming experience for someone who is new to the process (typically 2 or three stage process with the final stage a 2+ day onsite interview).

    Great job! Please keep recording! You could create a job search only for academic libraries. Some big schools require a second master's degree. Another video for public libraries and how they are divercified. Adult librarians, children's or teen librarians. A short video for each type of a library will be appreciated by our fellow librarians. Of course, if you have time and interest. Thank you. 🌞

    When I was searching in my last semester of grad school, I was advised that ALA Joblist has a higher placement fee than the job boards run through state library organizations, so the ALA positions posted tend towards management/admin positions (supervisors, directors, etc.). State library organization websites are a very mixed bag in terms of usability and search functions but can be helpful if you're in the US and are limiting your search that way.

    • @StacksFacts

      Hard to tell -- most libraries in North America require an MLIS from a program that's accredited by the American Library Association. Corporate librarianship may be an option though!

    Im curious, what are some of your interests outside of libraries and librarianship? Besides languages, since I know you've mentioned speaking other languages before!

    • @StacksFacts

      Oof, good question, although somewhat hard to separate at times. Because of some work I'd done before librarianship, i have a keen interested in trauma informed practices and nonviolent communication; I also grew up with ready access to tech and i occasionally dabble in coding, but only enough for any given task as it comes up -- a lot of relearning happens every time I need to do something :P
      Otherwise I enjoy computer and tabletop gaming (although much more the former than the latter this past year), and do my almost-best to enjoy whatever nature I live near.

    This was very helpful! I'm pursuing an undergraduate degree in engineering, but after a few not ideal co-op experiences, I'm thinking about getting an MLS specializing in Science Librarianship after graduating with my undergrad. I'm aware that jobs would mainly be available at academic institutions, but do you think there would be positions available within that niche?

    • @StacksFacts
      @StacksFacts  3 роки тому +1

      Definitely! there's a huge lack of librarians with a background in STEM fields. I wouldn't say that your employment is guaranteed (I promise nothing!) but I would expect yo to have a much easier time of it than most people when you get around to the job hunt.

    Hi! I have a (?) is it possible to get a job in the library without any experience what’s so ever? I have my h.s. Diploma and an associates degree on early childhood education. Does each state have different policy’s when it comes to library’s and the way they hired?

    • @StacksFacts

      You might be able to get a job, but probably not as a librarian. You may be able to look up job descriptions with your local government to see what requirements are for any given position.

    • @StacksFacts
      @StacksFacts  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, good question! Unfortunately I don't think many institutions will sponsor librarians for a work permit in the US. Further, many employers require MLIS degrees to be accredited by the ALA (or an equivalent overseas institution) which I don't think any Indian schools have.
      Otherwise if you're looking for non-librarian jobs, you'll likely have to get your degree formally assessed for US equivalency by an organization like NACES.
