Yeah, I was a bit sad that we talked very little about ILS/OPAC/LMS in any of my courses at SLAIS. Fortunately I have a lot of experience with Point of Sale systems in retail jobs and an ILS is very similar. The only course that addressed some of the nuts and bolts everyday library work was collection development/management.
I personally found that the tech I learned about in school versus what I ended up using in my actual workplace was VASTLY different. A lot of my MLIS was theoretical and nothing was very hands-on, but ultimately, you learn on the job. So far every place I've worked in since has required knowledge of different softwares/programs/tools etc. 100% agree with the ones you listed!
Learn cataloging in school. Even if you never have to catalog, you'll feel so accomplished and in interviews you can be all, yeah, I took a semester of cataloging as an elective, nbd. Been a librarian for about 10 years, learned html in school, never used it in my actual career.
Currently teaching a course about Library Technologies and I am going to talk about : ILS (theory as well as hand-on practice), OPAC, Discovery catalog, metaresearch, fablab, ERM, EDIFACT, Sushi/counter, CMS like LibGuide, electronic repository, online databases, kbart, technologies available to help people with handicap, etc

Tech is another place where there's an overlap in the theming, if not the specifics, with the publishing side. I was also on the technology & design track, so I got more of it than the folks in the business & marketing or editorial tracks. We had to learn a bit of HTML + CSS, discussed and experimented with CMS, and got into a (very) little bit of the use of and coding for a few book building softwares.
I don't remember learning about an integrated library system for my MLIS degree. However, Fulton County Library System (Atlanta] uses SirsiDynix Workflows. I have a new coworker who worked for Miami-Dade Library and he said that they used Polaris, which he finds better.
Yes, but depending on where you are you won't see the database itself. Rather, you will work with the interface of the ILS or LMS, which is what makes the database usable.
Do you know if there are any legal regulations for the records management (retention and disposition) of small museums/archives (not associated with government) in BC? Been having a hard time finding this info online.
Good question! You could reach out the the folks at UBC's iSchool, which has a focus specifically on archival studies. Otherwise, off the top of my head I can tell you that if they are nonprofits as recognized by the BC Societies Act, it does explicitly lay out record keeping requirements that are available for free online.
I think that GVPL uses Symphony, but in my job classification, I am not told anything and don't interact with the software outside of being a patron, so I could be wrong.
