I lived near a library when I was younger and whenever I visited I always thought the librarian hated me for some reason. I went regularly every school year and I always thought that she was being rude to me. When I went to that library for the last time my mom told her that we would be moving a few hours away and she said “I’m so glad I got to see you grow up” and was super nice to me when I took the time to talk with her. I feel so childish for just jumping to conclusions and thinking she disliked me for something I don’t even remember. We still keep and touch and she even mails me cards for my birthday and holidays!!💖

When I was a kid, I thought the library was magical. It felt almost like a place of worship to me (and I’m religious, so I’m not saying that lightly). So much possibility just waiting, patient but expectant, on the shelves. So many possible lives to slip into. The victory and defeat, the love and hate.... I’d mourn and celebrate with the characters in turn and it was like having the most reliable friends to turn to, no matter what.
When I was able to get a permit, I mostly got it and learned to drive so I could go to the library. It was my haven, my sanctuary.
I moved to a bigger town, but the main library is on the other side of town and the branch closer to me is open only on normal work hours during the week and Saturday morning from 9-12. It hurts me that so many people won’t get the opportunity to stroll through the shelves at their leisure. By 11 on a Saturday, the shelves are pretty depressing.
I’ve since gotten on several ebook lists that alert me when books are on sale for the day and I’ve had Audible for ten years, and I buy sparingly to increase a core collection (hardbacks; my vice) so I have a lot of books to choose from anyway. But it just... makes me sad that I don’t have a magic place like that now, to just commune with myself and all those adventures waiting to be picked up and embarked upon.
When I do go, I inevitably feel bad because I can afford to get some books here and there, and if I rent out that copy, that’s maybe someone’s shot at getting it. Maybe they hardly ever get to leave work an hour early, but because of a doctor’s appointment they have some time before closing. Or they’d pick it up on Saturday when they can sprint in with everyone else on their day off, but it’s not there because I’m camping out on it.
Now that I’m learning Spanish and would love some books that have an English and Spanish version, I’m going to be in there more. But I still feel a bit conflicted. I’d be swiping some middle schooler’s Spanish copy of Matilda or something. I wish our branch was less stressed, and then not only would we have more options without making an order, but we’d not feel conflicted.
I hope the next time I move, I find a town with a wonderful and gorgeous library that is well staffed and stocked. It would be a joy and a pleasure to roam the isles again like when I was a little girl. I know these magic places still exist and are even flourishing. I just have to stumble into the right wardrobe to find my way back to my literary Narnia, most likely when I least expect it to appear.

DO NOT feel bad about checking out books. You have no idea if that book has moved or not. And it not moving means it will probably get purged sooner rather then later. Besides, every circulation helps fund the library. Numbers mean a lot when it comes to funding.
Does your library have interloan? That's another option.

I think what these librarians are getting at is: libraries are the physical centres of knowledge of a people, and as new methods of learning this knowledge become widespread, such a centre must adapt.
Great video and love the illustrations. They look like something you'd see in an illustrated book, which gives me all sorts of warm fuzzies inside.

My town's public library is within biking distance and they have a big collection of DVDs and movies. Apart from the books, I love borrowing classics films from the 80s and 90s. It's a great way to experience great films without commercials on tv, or having to subscribe to a streaming service. Blockbuster may be gone, but libraries are keeping what made video rental stores great alive today.

Yeeess! As someone who’s worked in a library my entire working life, this is something I wish more people would realise. Libraries have and are evolving, we’re no longer that “hush hush” space; We’re a social arena, for people of all walks of life. At my library we do live music during lunch, every now and then, and that’s something I often tell others who might still have that old, narrow view of libraries to kind of “burst their bubble” a bit.
We literally do everything from making food, and hosting events to helping disabled people take of their jacket, or do some heavy investigating to try and find that book you loved when you were twelve 💙.

People need to use their libraries otherwise they'll close due to government funding cuts (because libraries are easy to close as it's something, sadly, most people won't notice). Libraries are constantly changing so they can stay relevant to the communities they serve.

I also realized how different libraries and how much they do are depending on the country and size of the city! Like my home library is in a German small town, they do have online services but very limited and also only a few events because its only a small town, but when I then moved to New Orleans in the US for a period of my life, there the library had any book I could think of, locations all over the city, an app, a lot of free online streaming stuff, free classes, like I did a journaling workshop, and you could even get free tickets to otherwise expensive museums through the library! SO amazing!

What I discovered just recently from my library technician program was that on the library's website there are databases (which are basically just websites that need a subscription to access) they have a lot of information. All you need is a library card and you can access them. The ones in my library have general information which you can search articles for academic purposes, you can learn a new language, some others are subject specific. Just take a look at your library's website under the databases tab to see what you have, it could help a lot.

I take my kids to free drop in activities at the library all the time, and my library has groups for people to meet and do things unrelated to books like knit, play board games, learn computer skills, etc. People really need to check out their local library's website and see how many great things they offer.

I had to work in a library at my old high school as a substitute, and it was the most grueling BUT gratifying work at the same time. I loved my 2-3 weeks as a librarian helper. I had to shelve books, organize books, put barcodes on them, and so much more. Towards the end, I was giving the stink eye to students who wouldn't put books away or put in the wrong spot. LOL. I think of that particular assignment quite fondly because the librarians were so nice as well.

When I was a kid I used to go to the library all the time for books. Then we moved across the world and I had to get used to libraries where the English section was only one shelf, both in my school and in the public library. For a while I stopped going completely. During college the school library was a great resource for studying and research books, but for probably 10 years I didn't step foot in a public library. A few months ago I started studying for the legal bar, and I discovered the massive public library in my city. I've been going there almost every day for months. They have an enormous selection of books, dozens of computers, helpful librarians. They have a kitchenette to make coffee, clean bathroom, nice couches, little study cubbies... I have completely fallen in love. It's also great to see the different types of people who go there. I feel like it's this underrated gem that I just discovered even though I've lived in this city for two years. I know that even after I finish studying I'll continue to go back for the events they hold and the resources they have. It's also so nice to have a place you can sit for 10 hours without having to pay any money whatsoever.

I really enjoyed this video! I don't know if I mentioned this already, but I'm really liking the direction that you're taking with your channel.
I love libraries so much. I used to volunteer at my local library with homework help and I saw other volunteers who helped immigrants with their citizenship tests and with English language classes. Libraries are such an important part of our community and I love that the resources are free and accessible.

Omg I love this video so much. Libraries have been a blessing for my education. As a student with a small attention span, my public library puts me into a mindset to really get stuff done. The last time I was there, there was an older lady tutoring a younger woman on English and it was so cute :,)

Thank you so much for this! I’m getting my masters degree in Library Science and I couldn’t be more excited! It’s a cool time to be a librarian-the field is changing and people would be surprised how awesome their public library can be. I’m hoping to work in a school library which has a lot of exciting aspects to it as well ☺️☺️
