      Satch could get 98 percent with a little bit of listening to it. And rehearse. He just didn’t remember it. Wasn’t his ability. It was odd on how they attacked him. Sammy probably called him up said hey hey get on a plane. Show up for stern. Play this and that. When your hits. He will have 98 percent perfect.

    Go into a bar in just about any major city in the country on the weekend and you can hear bands covering popular current songs as well as the classics. Many of these bands have guitar players that have spent countless hours practicing to learn the songs of others. Now there is an art to covering someone elses music to a tee. Getting the tone , speed & phrasing just right. However if you're not writing your own original songs you become basically a sports bar rockstar playing covers every weekend. Joe Satriani has put out 18 studio albums , 5 live albums and 5 compilation albums. 3 of his albums have gone gold and 1 has gone platinum. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say i don't think Joe has ever attempted to sit down and learn Mean Streets note for note. He was too busy writing his own music and touring the world. All these bedroom rockers that spent god knows how much time learning to play the intro to Mean Streets need to sit back and compare Satch's career to where they are. Satch makes a living playing music , his own original music. When these critics match his output of music & tour the world several times over then maybe , maybe they could throw some shade at him.

      Not only that, but Joe's 70 (?) years old, too. From what I've heard, he's struggling to keep his fingers in physical shape because of the rigors of the road and touring. So anything he tries to do nowadays, I'll give him a pass on, just out of respect. He's not going to keep up the Professor Satch routine forever.

    The intro to mean street is tough. I had to practice a lot just to do it as well as Satch and I can't imagine how much I'd have to do it to replicate Eddie. Whenever they got into "5150" though, Satch's tone and feel were so spot on...sounded killer.

  • @marcelomorem

    This is the best comment I've seen about the episode. Suddenly the community of dungeon guitarists was offended that none of them were invited by Sammy Hagar to honor Van Halen's classics. So they decided to vent their anger not only on one of the greatest guitarists of all time, but one of the most humble and polite. Joe Satriani is, first and foremost, a class act. Joe is also a musical genius and innovator. That's why Sammy invited him. And that's why none other than Alex Van Halen had already invited him too. Anyway, here's a lesson for all these kids who think they're better than Satch just because they spent months uselessly trying to be the best copy of Eddie Van Halen: history has no place for imitators.

      They invited him because he had played in chicken foot with them. They would’ve felt like a-holes if they didn’t ask him first. Anyone with ears knows Pete Thorn would’ve been a better choice to capture the spirit of Eddie’s playing. Of course Satch can get the job done but I just don’t feel he was the “best” choice.

    • @marcelomorem
      @marcelomorem 7 місяців тому +3

      @@thatsamazin- Pete who? We have Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony, two former members of Van Halen. And we have Jason Bonham. I don't know if you understand the context, but we're talking about legends paying tribute to the greatest rock guitarist of all time.
      And legends play with legends. Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, George Lynch, Uli Roth and Neal Schon are legends. Eric Johnson, Steve Morse and Yngwie Malmsteen are legends. Then we have the great guitarists, like Paul Gilbert, Nuno Bettencourt, Jake E. Lee, Warren De Martini, Zakk Wylde or Reb Beach, for example.
      Then, much later, at the end of the line there are guys like Pete Thorn. I'm sorry to say this, don't get me wrong, I respect guys like him a lot, because I'm not capable of doing what he does.
      But understand: this tribute is not about who plays the best copy of Eddie Van Halen. Sammy and Michael aren't putting together a cover band. This is no stage for imitators.

    Andy your a BEAST! I have been a longtime fan of yours, you have great tone, amazing chops, and your extremely generous with your time. But this rant is sooooooo spot on!!!! I am 60 years old, and I was lucky enough to have studied with Joe in my 20’s during the time he was recording “Surfing With The Alien”. Joe was really only known locally and by a few hardcore guitar enthusiasts but when Surfing came out THE WORLD CHANGED, but you know what didn’t change….. Joe. He has always kept his head on straight, he has never lost sight of his vision and he is STILL a student of the guitar, ever growing, ever developing, and ever pushing the envelop of what instrumental rock guitar can do. We played “Always With Me” together before the song was released as an example of B Major composition, but when I heard the final recording I was just floored. Even after playing it with him I had no idea of how far he would take that piece. Joe is the most incredible musician I have ever had the opportunity to be in the same room with and I will always be grateful for that. These fools that want to tag Joe and act like they can do better….. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Most of us are not just hiding in our mothers basement like trolls. But, he really should not have tagged Satriani. Nonetheless, maybe Satriani does get a good kick in the butt to learn the songs better to the point where what he brings to the table actually keeps it fresh. I really did not hear him interpreting the songs in a unique and personal way. I heard him fumbling and getting through. Which again just proves the fact that she should not have been put in that position at this time. They were not ready for the Howard Stern show.

    was unrivaled. Ed could do things Satch can’t do, and vice versa. Imagine if the roles were reversed, and Ed was still alive and had to pull off Joe’s catalog. I don’t know why Van Halen fans in general have to be so toxic. Thank you Andy for always flying the EVH flag, and calling out BS when needed.

    1000% man! Gotta call the basement dwellers out. Joe is an Icon, but more than that, He's close friends with Sammy. Anyone who has actually played live in bands or done anything in the music business knows that being a great hang and bandmate is the #1 priority. If Alex, Dave, and Wolfie(on guitar) could all agree on a "Best of All Worlds" tour with Sammy and Mikey, That would be the lineup, but unfortunately it seems like that's never gonna happen.

    The fact is most of the guitar players in any of the Van Halen tribute bands could probably play any of the songs better then Joe, but is Sammy gonna hire a person he doesn't know to go on tour with him? No absolutely not. Joe is a pioneer who has taught many of the famous and iconic guitar players we know today and his style is not a copy of Eddie so he will be putting his touch on the songs as Sammy does when singing the old David Lee Roth songs. The fact of the matter is not even Eddie himself played those songs the same way twice, watch any live performance of him there are mistakes and blunders everywhere. Eddie always said the reason he didn't have a second guitar player for so long was because he needed to be able to go off and do whatever he wanted to at any given time. So if Joe is not your choice for this venture then don't follow it

      Mistakes and blunders WHERE precisely? Eddie doesn’t make mistakes and blunders, Ace.

    • @MISFIT-lz2wc
      @MISFIT-lz2wc 7 місяців тому

      @@RobertMJohnson you are obviously obsessed with Eddie and think he's a God, he is not and even Eddie admitted that many times mistakes and blunders turned into a new found sound or riff. But if you need real proof just watch any live video from the 2004 reunion tour and you will no longer think the way you do, Sammy use to have fights with him about screwing up so bad he had trouble singing over it. And then there was the reunion with Dave that was also horrible... see for yourself here's a couple examples, Ace! ... By the way he was a terrible drunk and coke head incase you didn't know so of course he screwed up many times. Don't get me wrong I loved Eddie he's why I started playing guitar 36 years ago, but don't be unrealistic man and please no a thing or two before you comment on things 😉

    I agree. Wanting to have someone who can recreate Eddie's sound and style 100% (or 95% realistically) is almost dishonorable to his legacy. Get someone who can play the song on a functional, enjoyable level but also create the good time that EVH was known for.

    Hello Andy. You hit the nail right on the head. I made a comment similar to what you just said on another video about how others felt about Joe Satriani, and how he performed on the Howard Stern show. I think Joe did an excellent job for not being rehearsed. Joe plays his own material, and to agree to play in the Eddie Van Halen spotlight, takes lotta guts. All eyes will be on Joe, but I guarantee he will kill it when the time comes for the tour. Besides, I don’t remember anyone stepping up to the plate to play in Eddie‘s position.
