- Hello Music lovers! Welcome to episode 2 of the Woodshed! When i asked what you wanted me to cover in this episode you spoke and i listened! You guys asked for a guitar lesson on emulating the sound of guys like Eric Johnson and Joe Bonamassa. This is NOT a "heres the EJ or JB lick" rather, this is a lesson on the concepts i use to emulate their phrasing, and "sound" When Im playing this stuff, im not just reusing specific licks, but instead im trying to use these 3 steps to sound more like them
Thanks so much for the feedback guys! Im enjoying digging through the comments and there will be lots of content for me to look into! Subscribe please, and visit andywoodmusic.com for music, merch, videos, gear etc! Let me know what you'd like to see next, cheers all!
Fantastic content, thank you for being open to share it. Thoughts to your friends and family or anyone affected in Nashville. Let us know if there are legit donation funds we can support.
Thank you so much! Wish I saw that 5 years ago) Also where we can find this axe-fx preset on your website? Or you gonna release like a preset pack in the future?
If you can, teach Guthrie Govan's playing style❤️🎸🙏🏼
Great lesson and teaching style. Thank you so much.
I would say stick to the way your doing these lesions. Your covering the right amount of material and do fantastic job. I sure appreciate it. Thank you very much.
So stoked I found out about you Andy & the Woodshed. Thanks to Travis Toy (guest on Music is Win with Tyler Larson) .
Great lesson here, can't wait to practice it. Thank you very much kind sir. Inspiration appreciated!!
I don’t know why I’ve never stumbled upon your channel until now. But I have and still am binge watching all your videos. The more I watch the more pissed off I get at myself for not diving in deep years ago. I have always been a very good guitar player but I can’t even hold a flame next to you dude. I am mostly self taught and never had support to progress when I was young but I grew up with a bunch of musicians older than me that took me and a few others my age under their wings and showed us the way. So I have progressed slowly through three marriages, three daughters and eight years in the Air Force and everything else life has thrown in my path...anyway enough of my useless ranting.
Thank you, great lessons, very overwhelming but awesome and humbling...
🎸🤓🎸🇺🇸☮️🙏
I watched a couple of pedal reviews and people on them kept saying "You should listen to Andy Wood", "Andy Wood is awesome", blah blah blah. So here I am. This is GOLD!
🙌🏻🍻
This is the man this whole community needed
strongly agree!
@@KelsterVonShredster A Savior.
Yes
This helped me get this style better than any lesson about the subject.
the best eric johnson style lesson out there by far!
Fantastic lesson
I love your awakening story! I couldn't buy all those albums fast enough in the 80's ... or Paul Gilbert's instructional videos back then.
Brilliant lesson. I've subscribed. Uncle Ben Eller sent me here :)
David Yates eeeeyyyyy!!!!
Same!!!
Me as well!
I had all the puzzle pieces, but I needed Andy to put them together. Thanks man!
Thanks for the great vid, Andy! Great teaching, now a sub of yours!!
Wow! This was about $400 bucks of guitar lessons. You understand what we guitar players are wanting from the inspiration of EC and JB. Thanks a Million!!!
That tone just rocks. Thanks Andy.
Thanks Andy really enjoyed this lesson
I believe the word you were looking for was "traverses". But son, you are so awesome you speak using whatever words you wish, I'll just keep sitting here in awe of you're insane talents. I will also get to bookmarking this entire series. Amazing. Just amazing.
You're a great teacher, Andy. Cheers from Brazil! :)
great lesson Andy....& nailed the Tone too !! great stuff !!
Bruh! That's an action packed lesson. It's harder than you think to find a great teacher. But your stuff is always accessible.
And I used to teach similarly..."don't try to cop the exact licks, instead cop the VIBE, and the licks will fall into place.."
Another great lesson! Thanks Andy!
GREAT JOB....GREAT ATTITUDE....GREAT PLAYER
I really found your tips helpful, and practical! Thanks for doing this video!
This guy is disgustingly good he and Uncle Ben ought to start a band 😉 seriously this lesson was awesome !!!
really really excellent instruction
I'm digging this. I have always wanted to learn some of Joe's and Eric's phrasings. I hear Joe using Eric's phrasings a lot in his playing. Great stuff. I was just in Gatlinburg through January 7th-11th. Awesome place.
Simply awesome. The first time is everything celar about those guys.
Excellent lesson - Cheers Andy
Very cool, looking forward to jamming with this preset too!
This is such an awesome lesson, thank you. I have been practicing the fives in the pentatonic boxes as per the Troy Grady primer, but this puts it together for me for improv big time. I would love to see the next level of the EJ/JB style when improvising over changes for blues. Would you consider a video for that maybe???
Been teaching and playing 50 some years, all your lessons are excellent and this one is the best!
very inspiring!!keep up the great stuff !! love it
This is teaching. Thanks, Andy. So clear, both conceptually and practically. I'm just up the road from you in Seymour. Hope to see you at Open Chord.
Loving the channel!
Excellent lesson on a difficult style to emulate properly. Muchas gracias, cheers.
Dude, this is pure gold!!!
Love your style bro, amazing lesson for sure !!
Thanks for this excellent video. This is so much more digestible than Troy G's over produced videos - humble, down to earth, pragmatic and useful as hell. Troy's stuff tries to make it all sound like some kind of magic, that being said while over complicated and borderline irritating they are still useful(ish) resources. This was better though IMO.
Great lesson. Hearing your thought process is what I find most helpful.
Andy Wood = Bad Azz MortarForker ... !!! Very Awesome ... Thank's for sharing . I'm learning so much from you . Thank You
So glad Any is finally on the internet. His absence was saddening
Shout out to Uncle Ben Eller’s Guitar WankShop for turning me on to Andy. Now one of my favorite guitar players. I’ve seen Eric Johnson in and around Austin in the early to mid eighties many times while in college. Also SRV. Andy is legit. Thanks for sharing.
Andy Wood, #1, with Pete Thorn.
"Reach'" at The Bijou '15, available here in YT, was simply virtuosic.
This is so helpful!!! Thank you for posting
So much talent and taking time to share some with other musicians is admirable to say the least sir, thank you very much!
Great job Andy. very professional quality! you should do a tutorial of some of your songs. these guys are legends but some of us want to see your approach to your own songwriting!
Thanks for doing this Andy. This is great and much appreciated. Outstanding lesson!!
Really appreciate the mentioning of note names and scale degrees!!
Hi! What an awesome video! Could you please cover how to practice and strengthen my time? As a hobbyist guitar player it's especially hard to keep time during live gigs...
Like someone else said Andy, you are the man. You have a very good teaching technique not to even mention guitar technique. Great work and you are very appreciated.
Regards,
David
Dang! Great playing, great vibe, subscribed 🙏
Best lesson ever, Andy! Love the use of scale degrees and intervals to describe what you’re playing rather than fret numbers. You explain things so clearly and logically and it’s also so melodic and musical - thanks for this and please keep it going!
You're the man, Andy. Great video that I'll be referring to as I woodshed this for the next 10 years.
Many thanks Andy, you managed to keep my attention all the way through and make the lesson easy to follow. That linear clue instead of a box makes so much sense. Must practice now. All the best man. 🎼
Wow ... fantastic teaching and explanations, Andy. Thanks for doing this!
Great lesson
Love you Andy! Good stuff! 👍🏽
Andy, this lesson was fantastic. Very easy to follow and your energy is awesome. Looking forward to future lessons!
Those are some interesting shapes for fingerings
Fantastic lesson. Thanks Andy for sharing your talent with us. Besides being a GREAT player, your are an excellent teacher! 👍👍
So happy you are doing lessons. Really cool that you're talking conceptual stuff beyond just licks.
Can you please break down the playing of Andy Timmons?
Great playing as always.
Thanks again!!
Brotha....where have you been?!?!???? Awesome 👍 awesome stuff!!! Thank you! From Texas 💯😎🎼👍
This is a seriously awesome lesson in how to approach this style well done man. I would love to see how you approach the more laid back technique you use in Imagine Love. Btw Junktown is the instrumental album of the decade for me. Tone. Chops. Dynamics. You and Uncle Ben rule!
Andrew Muller well shucks!
That just goes to show you how naturally gifted you are Andy, if you sounded like Gilbert, Johnson, and Morse at 17, and didn't even know anything about them, that to me is incredible. You've slowly worked your way into my top ten favorite guitarist, and are making you way to the top. I hope you continue to make music, as I will buy all of it. I would like to see you do live streams in the future if possible. Great video.
This is a really great lesson, dude. Thanks very much for posting. Really great way of breaking this stuff down. It's such a signature sound and it's so crazy to see how "easily" it breaks down. So much of these lessons focus on the groupings but this lesson captures the sonic texture of these runs in a much more sensible way. If that makes any sense...
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
well done andy! I think I spent countless frustrating nights looking for a decent video/lesson on EJ/JB peculiar licks - talking about those licks where you only have minor pentatonic but, only God knows, THEY play in a way, YOU don't ... finally I got here and, look, when a REAL guitar player like andy is, and not a youtuber does a video on this, can you guess? it is the first time somebody is able to go through some examles that really sound like they are supposed to! somtimes it's better to go the old way, when we used to have our REH videos, where REAL guitar players was teaching tips and not guys with plenty of time and a good camera ... but little more than that! thanks Andy for sharing with us!
Im impressed because the cd your friend made to you is almost the same that my guitar teacher made for me! Same songs! Same influences! Im glad that I found your youtube channel! Regards from Rio de Janeiro!
This is gold-thanks!
I need to spend a week with this video. Killer stuff man.
Hi Andy !!!
Shorter message here 😉😊...where is the Ep 1 of this great video please ?...Thanck you so much...
Take care...Pat.
Pat Lesage it’s in the video listings on my channel
hey man can u do an episode of displacement 8/16 th notes there is so lil information on the net -love these episodes
Stellar!
Discuss or demonstrate stuff that your really into! Your starting ot just fine! Thanks
A Shawn Lane lesson would me AMAZING! Would love to hear you talk about his playing a bit too dude. Thanks for a great lesson. The EJ style playing in the background of this vid was incredible. Nailed it.
zaccyo thanks! That background tune is on my album Junktown. It’s called “Back to Austin”
Great lesson my man!
This is such a useful lesson. It's finally helped me unlock how to play those awesome Bonamassa style ascending and descending licks. Liked and subscribed :-)
Thanks for the lesson!
How’s about deep diving into your rule#3?
The concept of tying the chord tones in is something I could benefit from.
I’m not too hip on chords other than the
cowboy variety.
Dude you are an amazing player. Glad I found your channel. This is how to make pentatonic lines really sound good, mastery. I have trouble with my right hand (been watching some Troy Grady but the counting of the notes throws me off). I'm so used to hammering on and pulling off that its hard for me to alternate pick every note quickly like you do. Can you achieve the same precision and speed using hammer ons and pulls offs without getting lost on your picking hand? I feel like even if you don't pick every note you still need to follow that alternate pattern.
Awesome Andy, never hit subscribed so fast!
Great content man!!!🔥🔥💯
Breaking down chicken pickin' lead licks with double stops and single note country stuff. And the rhythmic syncopated stuff you can do with that technique. I have had such a hard time getting that stuff to feel natural. So maybe a way to practice/approach that? Love the playing, Andy. Thanks!
Really enjoyed this lesson, even the "Holy Triad" joke!! (I'm gonna steal that!)
We just want to learn your style!
Great stuff, Andy! Finally, you push your channel! I've always enjoyed your videos. :)
Since I've struggled with (downward motion) vibrato for a very long time, I'm always curious, how pros like you approach or even practise it. It's finally working relatively fine. But some advice is never wrong. :)
As a side note: sooner or later, you should use an extra mic to record your voice. I can hardly understand your words, but when you play, I have to decrease volume quickly, so that my boss doesn't hear it. ;-P Keep it up, man! Cheers from Germany! :)
Woodshed is cool.
Hey dude I used to jam with you up in Pigeon Forge with Kirk Heinsohn at the Brewery sometimes. I remember you telling me about Brent Mason. Great to see you doing well. You're still awesome man!
So cool. It is disconcerting to hear him play like a god and talk like your buddy. Re Austin City Limits Cliffs Of Dover ... Eric's intro always made be think of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now". Am I crazy or did anyone else pick up on that vibe?
Can you cover your reverb and delay settings, and overdrive for this sound?
First timer .....good stuff 👍
How are you getting that wonderful tone in this video? Thanks for the lesson!
Tab please!!!!! What looks so easy for wizards like you is not super easy for us earthlings!
Tab (Uncle Ben style is fine) helps slow people like me focus on the phrasing versus rewinding continuously to see what you're playing :)
SHAWN LANE PLEASE!!! Any thing Shawn.
I actually cackled out loud at the G Sus joke
Can someone please explain to me what Andy is playing over the A base note. Are they double stops or triads? And is it only notes from the minor pentatonic or are they 3rds? from the whole diatonic scale? Loving the lessons!
Love your work Andy, check out Irish guitarist Simon McBride, he plays phrases like these, a monster player :)
Traverses.
Great lesson. 🙂
Look up Dweezil Zappas pentatonic lesson.
You have the DiMaggio pickups Eric uses in that strat ? Because it sounds nice
great channel! heres a strange request. say you have to learn the jazz tune love for sale for a gig in a week. and lets say there is no real book and the only recorded version is Ella Fitzgerald with a big band. What is your process?
