    Great video! I especially like the attention to the dial spacer. I've been looking for how flat dials are managed on main plates that are designed for domed dials. Also the complex repair of the broken case screws. That's one of those things that's generally more trouble than it's worth but it's super interesting to see how it can be done, and UA-cam makes it worth doing because so many people are curious about things like that. I really appreciate the time you put into this, subscribed, and look forward to more! Fantastic work! Thanks so much for sharing!

    I stripped a screw in an old G-Shock years ago trying to swap the battery, and I’ve been curious ever since as to how you can get past stripped/broken screws that are so tiny in something so important and delicate. Watching your solution, there’s really no short cut is there?! Lol that’s one of those things that requires the long way around but it looks great and I know it’s not popular opinion but I love Tag Heuer, especially the Monaco! Thanks for an awesome video man.

  • @redneck4528

    They make left handed drill bits which if you center them correctly will back out the broken screws and leave the threads undamaged.

    • @awatchdiary
      @awatchdiary  Рік тому

      Thank you for the comment.
      I have thought of it. For the suggestion to have chance of success I would need a 0.7mm counter drill, difficult to find and very easy to break. And there is the problem of a centre hole I need a very precise press or lathe to achieve drilling a 0.5mm hole in a 0.9mm screwbody. I do not have such precise drill or equipment for the necessary accuracy. Usually we use a ball deburring bit for this, or a square broaching tool.
      Back story is I asked the laser welder to weld a stainless steel 1mm rod to the screw stump and unfortunately due to the rust rot, the turning force fractured the screw remnants even smaller. He tried for a few hours and gave up this attempt.

    Well done! First time I’ve seen a steam cleaner used, do you usually use on steel brackets? Well done drilling and tapping the holes, did you use a dermal?

    • @awatchdiary
      @awatchdiary  Рік тому

      I usually pre-clean with steam if there is large buildup of dirt to make it easier for the ultrasonic. And yes its a Dremel work station with a dremel press.😅

  • @9426sunny

    I know, I know... Never buy a watch with screw hole case back. Screw down case back (usually diver watches) is the best. By the way, when did you put the gasket??

    • @awatchdiary
      @awatchdiary  Рік тому +2

      It was greased and put on to the caseback prior to casing. Theres a lip on the caseback edge that nicely holds in the gasket. I find that to be easiest way to ensure it seats properly rather than laying it on the case itself.

    • @awatchdiary
      @awatchdiary  Рік тому

      I had a poor experience with extracting stainless steel stem in crowns. That took weeks in a heated alum bath. It may work, but didn’t want to potentially spend too long a time. If its just steel, yes, dissolving it can be fast. Haven’t much experience with this method, definitely open to learning more and experimenting! Thank you for the comment!

      @@awatchdiary On the other hand if the screws had been stainless steel, they wouldn't have rusted shut?
      Any way I would have applied heat and WD-40, lots of both before proceeding to try to unscrew the stuck feeling screws. Possibly the screws still would've snapped, but at least I would've tried my best.

    • @awatchdiary
      @awatchdiary  Рік тому

      @@Ba_Yegu yes that is a very good idea. WD40 and torch it with gas lighter and try. On hindsight I should have tried it first. I was too confident with the screwdriver when disaster struck.

  • @mitchd949
    @mitchd949 Рік тому

    You seemed careful enough to use cutting and tapping oil. Why didn't you try some penetrating fluid/oil before snapping off the screws in the first place? A can of PB Blaster is less than $10 USD and you'd likely only need a few pennies worth. Certainly worth a try before just applying force and having to go down the path of weld repair, re-drilling, and re-tapping.

    • @awatchdiary
      @awatchdiary  Рік тому

      Overconfidence as 2 screws came out ok. Screwcaps looked ok and it usually isn’t an issue with these kinds of caseback. But now, I know better😂
