No surprise that John Madden treated a D-III game like an NFL game. For over 60 years, football was his life. He knew those kids were in it for the love of the game, like he was.
Pretty incredible timing for this to pop, and now to hear he's passed away. The guy was the embodiment of what I love: he loved football and he made you love football too. RIP Coach.
Just heard of John Madden's passing. What a legend he was, and no other John Madden story could possibly explain what a legend he was better than this one. The man just loved football and couldn't have cared less that it was a D3 game.
You could tell that Madden and broadcast partner Pat Summerall had passion for football. That the 1982 NFL strike created this opportunity is wild. It just adds to the iconic duo's legend. I'm proud to day I grew up listening to Summerall and Madden call games.
I'm a Wittenberg graduate, and I never heard about this while I was there with the late 2000s. I'm surprised that they don't use it as part of their pitch to potential students
John Madden is a living testament to the adage "being happy leads to a long life"... The man is physically a giant and overweight and whatever else you want to say but he always has a smile on his face and he's 85 years old!
@OneHairyGuy Closest is the Division 3 game between University of San Diego and Occidental, with Dick Stockton and Hank Stram, it's on UA-cam. Even Stram was puzzled by the offensive sets by the two teams.
I really enjoyed this video. I never knew this story, and I'm a huge fan of Madden. To me he seemed like a really great teacher. He obviously knew a lot more about football than a casual fan like me, but he never came across like he was talking down to the viewers. He would point out a key block that resulted in a big gain, and I never would have known but for his showing it to us on the replay. Live, I just watched whoever had the ball. As an ex-coach, he watched everyone. He knew the players' strengths. He knew their jobs. He knew which coaches were ex-players. When Bo Jackson was shoved out of bounds while sprinting down the sideline, and ran into some assistant coach, knocking him cold, Madden said "Ten years ago he'd have made that tackle."
Unfortunately the majority of CFL games (at least during the regular season) nowadays are behind a paywall via ESPN+ with the occasional game shown on ESPN2 or ESPN News.
@@chrisguardiano6143 Used to watch CFL Football when Baltimore had a team during US expansion, it was good but not on a level playing field because US teams were exempt from the import rule.
Baldwin Wallace is literally a few miles away from my home here in the Cleveland suburbs. They actually have a very nice field now with field turf (George Finnie Stadium).
I was actually fascinated with watching the CFL games on NBC. I was 13 and just becoming a CFL fan at the time, but my parents wouldn’t spring for cable to get ESPN. Love to see something about the CFL fill-in games during the strike. Unfortunately the games that were broadcast weren’t competitive (there were other games on the same weekends that were entertaining shootouts).
Remember that too. I still think the 3 down, wider and longer field, make the cfl better. Imagine a single point on kicks in the nfl! As the nfl players get faster and bigger, the cfl rules make more sense to me.
The first weekend, NBC gave the CFL the full DH treatment-with NFL 82 going in-depth on rules, teams, recognizable faces, etc. Then Don Criqui/John Brodie were in Toronto for Ti-Cats/Argos, then Enberg/Olsen were in Edmonton for their game against Calgary (the first US OTA appearance for Warren Moon since the 78 Rose Bowl) Dick and Merlin were supposed to be in San Diego for Raiders/Chargers-Dick even said that on air-but they put their all into the broadcast. To this day, Moon should give a cut of his income to the Enberg and Olsen families-as they were his biggest supporters that day. The next weekend, NBC was back in Edmonton (with Charlie Jones/Len Dawson) for the game with Winnipeg, but as you stated, the game was a blowout-and the novelty had worn off...
I got recruited by Wittenberg and Baldwin-Wallace back in the early 2000's. Both schools recruiting coordinator's brought this game up in the meetings I had with them. Wittenberg actually had a wall in their pressbox that had pictures of Madden and Summerall at practice, I imagine they are still there. I had forgotten about that until I saw the title for this video.
Thank you for a very interesting presentation. It must’ve been pretty awesome for those kids to play in a game broadcast on CBS and called by two of the best NFL announcers ever.
Well, as if Division 3 college football games are bad, NBC went as far to air Canadian Football League games during the 1982 strike. The experiment only lasted a month, all 4 CFL games were blowouts, and NBC abandoned the idea due to poor ratings.
On Oct. 3, Saskatchewan was leading Calgary 53-8, and NBC pulled the plug on the telecast before the game was over. Unlike with the Heidi game, there were no complaints. A week later was Thanksgiving weekend, and all four CFL games were close and exciting except the one on NBC, which had Edmonton beating B.C. 30-1, ending the experiment.
I'm sure players on both teams to this day still talk about the time Madden and Summerall called their game. These guys are the GOATs because they had a combination of talent and passion for what they did.
This was an enjoyable watch as usual. I love the fact that Summerall and Madden prepared like they normally would for an NFL game even though it was Division 3. That's being a true pro, and why they both deserved their reputations for being among the best ever.
Of course they would. For these schools, it was THEIR biggest telecast ever and Summerall and Madden took it just as seriously as they would any other broadcast.

I am a Dolphins fan and the John Madden coached Raiders ended the Dolphins 18 game win streak with a game in Berkeley in 1973 and the sea of hands playoff game in 1974 that ended the Dolphins dynasty but still like and admire Madden for efforts like these in this video and the Daryl Stingley episode when the Patriots receiver was paralyzed by a hit by Raiders player Jack Tatum in 1978 but Madden visited Stingley often in the Hospital when Stingley was in the West Coast Hospital before moving to Chicago later and in the time Stingley was in California Madden wanted Stingley's Wife and Child stay at his home until they moved to Chicago .John Madden is a great coach color commentator but most of all a great human.
I VERY vividly remember that incident! So VERY, VERY sad! 😢 However, I never knew that about Madden looking in on Stingley. I never knew about how he took care of his family. I don't remember that EVER being reported by the media. I don't remember hearing ANYTHING about that at all! He sounds like a VERY compassionate human being! We DEFINITELY need more people like that! Thank you so VERY MUCH for sharing that story! 👌😁👍
I remember this broadcast of the Baldwin-Wallace and Wittenberg game. I had figured it was done by CBS to put pressure on the NFL players and league to settle their strike. But now I learn Madden and CBS took this game very seriously. Glad I saw this video. Great job... I also remember on the NBC broadcast at that time slot, they were talking about some game they had covered when Pete Axthelm was asked for his opinion. He repleied, "I don't know. I'm watching Wittenberg and somebody."
CBS had a requirement in the TV contract with the NCAA to do four D3 games. Since they had no football this Sunday scheduled they got four games to move used NFL crews and got the requirement out of the way in one day.

However, I never knew that about Madden looking in on Stingley.
Game link ?
CBS had a requirement in the TV contract with the NCAA to do four D3 games. Since they had no football this Sunday scheduled they got four games to move used NFL crews and got the requirement out of the way in one day.
Great story! A nice preview for the John Madden documentary airing on Fox later.
RIP to one of the greats. Hope he and Pat are calling games in the afterlife.
I need Jaguar to do a video about NBCs coverage of the CFL and why it flopped in 82... YOU OWE IT TO UR CANADIAN FANS, JAGUAR!!!
I remember watching Occidental play San Diego in 1982.😀❤️
RIP football announcer god.
I remember watching the game plus NBC was televising the Canadian Football League
Huh, no shit. Wittenberg was in my conference when I played D3 volleyball. Never heard about this story, but it's very interesting
GREAT story for Christmas!
Absolutely agree
Really amazing even though it was a division III game he was still giving it his all. John Madden was truly an amazing commentator.
RIP John Madden 😕😞🏈
I could only imagine how special this whole event was for the players. Once in a lifetime meeting with Madden being the locker room helping the team.
Football is football, I can see Madden drawing all over the TV screen while commentating on a pee wee football game..
Merry Christmas!
Rest in Peace John Madden
