Can we appreciate how much Martin was enthusiastic and respectful with Taylor and this interview. A lot of people don’t think she deserves this kind of recognition and he didn’t seem egotistical about his work

It's amazing how well she can speak about her craft while also showing appreciation for the work of others. She was incredibly articulate, and her discussion of Martin's incredible work reminded me of why I love film and hearing from directors so much. Taylor is so well spoken it's crazy. she speaks in such a similar way to her lyrics that it just baffles me, especially this being a conversational thing not a written speech. I could listen to her talk about her work and creative process forever!!! Her taste in movies seems so niche and refined too now I need to watch everything she mentioned because she spoke so highly of them.

What a natural conversation! This didn’t feel like watching two strangers try to interview one another, this was just such a pleasure to listen to.
People just don't give Taylor enough credit for just how much she's studied and learned along the way in her career and she really is ready to make a feature film and I can't wait to see what she does!!

The purpose of art is the creation and expression itself, which propels you to even more creation and expression. It's a continuous, never-ending process, and perfectionism ends up being a hindrance.
I want to say that I've never listened to Taylor Swift's music much, but this interview has really opened my eyes to how brilliant of a person she is. What fantastic insight and understanding she has about the creative process. It's so refreshing compared to what you hear from most modern pop stars. I believe she would be capable of writing/directing a feature film.
I hope this realization makes you decide to sit and be present with her music you didn't hear on the radio. Buckle up, you're in for a ride.
Seconding the comment above! I’ve been a fan of Taylor’s music for over a decade and I always recommend her 9th album ‘Evermore’ to other creative adults. It’s such a good exhibit of her storytelling ability and song writing skill.

She has many many many co-writers. They are credited on her albums if you read the album liners, or look up each album/single on Wikipedia.

I would never have conceived of this pairing for a directors on directors video so it's a major surprise how damn good this is. The key is they are both writers/storytellers at heart and even though their approaches are different there is a definite bond here because of that. I thoroughly enjoyed the discussion.

It focused on the only one thing that she wants us to focus on: Her Career, instead of who she's dating at the moment, or any other private personal life things of hers.

Do you feel proud that she is using her power and privilige to be on a stage that she doesn't deserve? She directed a short-film and not even a successful one. These interviews used to be about renowed directors who released some of the most important features of the year. Why is even Taylor Swift on this?! This is as weird as watching her playing an NBA game.
As a person who is a director, hearing Taylor talk about directing and her love for it is absolutely amazing. I relate to her in so many ways because we've both dealt with our image among people being altered and impacted, have taken inspiration from it and turned it into our own ways of creating art. I love Taylor so much because like her, I do so many different art forms that sometimes I can't even keep up with myself and my friends always wonder what I will do next. Thank you Taylor for always being that massive force of inspiration for my generation and many others. Your creativity and intelligence will create the creatives. I think mine will too very soon.

This is just another proof of what an incredible intelligent, witty, wise, clever and talented woman she is. Those Taylor Swift haters often say they don’t like her music bc it’s „boring and girly“ or whatever but those people just don’t understand the depth and meaning of her work. I mean the profoundness that’s put in her art and lyrics really shouldn’t be gone unnoticed. But only a few really have the capacity to understand that.

Most critics do say that she's a fine songwriter and lyricist. Her "haters" are probably a small demographic, I wouldn't classify or categorise those who don't enjoy her music as "haters". Musical tastes are subjective, and I know people that don't like her music but can acknowledge her way with words and ability to craft hits.
Also "profoundness" isn't an actual word, you mean *profundity*.
Taylor Swift is a multi skilled and confident person who believes in herself and was definitely on her own when making decisions about her career at a very young age. Having to listen to people who had 'experiences' and then making choices which probs offended some but felt good at the time.

If I’m being honest, I could have watched about 3 hours of this! They are both different in such significant ways but it was amazing to see the similarities in their work I’d never seen before. Such a great convo!
What a great conversation. So often when I see interviews of Taylor Swift, it's like she can't forget the audience is there and she kind of has a vibe of still being in performance mode, and the interviewers don't usually seem especially interested in her as a person, which doesn't help. But here, both participants were so relaxed and engaged and just having a very genuine conversation. It brought out so much more depth.
Her long pond sessions documentary for her album folklore has a similar vibe. If you have time you should check it out!

I absolutely love how Martin is so invested in learning about her direction. She talks about her work for a majority of the video but thats only because Martin is so kind to keep his answers short and turn the question back on her
Because he probably has been in the game long enough to know that most people are coming to this video to see her, not him, and he does not want to be dragged by her huge fanbase for mistreating an "upcoming" "female" director that frankly isn't in the same league as him when it comes to output and quality of output at the moment.

I’ve been a fan for … 10 years exactly and this is her best interview to date. I’ve watch her grow and I’m just in awe of how she has reached this stratosphere of talent and work ethic. Hands down one of the best talks I’ve seen recorded

Taylor is so talented and smart. I often get emotional when I think about how her music has been with me and grown with me for 15 years.
I love how humble she is. I also appreciate how well aware she is of celebrities who act one way in the public eye, but behind close doors they’re not who they appear to be. And that she’s not covering up for them just because she’s famous. So glad she’s staying away from such celebs and that she’s definitely not one of them. She’s just trying to have fun and create art. Plus, she’s so supportive of everyone❤
Taylor really is one in a million, a once in a lifetime artist and we should be glad to witness her making history whether it’s about music or movies. Future generations will be jealous of us that we got to experience this. I still don’t think she gets the appreciation she deserves.

I discovered martin McDonough very recently and binged his three films in preparation for three banshees. Now that I've seen all four, I must say he's an incredible director and writer. His dark, comedic dramas just don't miss.
The On Raglan Road montage from In Bruges is perfect cinema.
@@PurushaDesa most of in brudges is perfect cinema honestly. Three billboards is the most well made, with the most human characters. Three banshees is the most thought provoking. 7 psychopaths is a lot of fun and is hilarious.
But In brudges is absolutely my favorite. The characters, the setting, the comedy, the drama, the climax. It's all perfect.

Just watched Three billboards again. It’s definitely a little over dramatic at parts like the flashback scene but damn, I was an emotional wreck watching the 2nd half all over again

The Cripple of Inishmaan, Beauty Queen of Leenane, and A Skull in Connemara are personal faves. Also saw Hangmen in NYC this year, and it messed with my head for days. He’s truly the best of the best.
I watched The Banshees of Inisherin with my family last night after watching this interview. Absolutely stunning. Heartbreaking with enough wit and absurdity to make that pain bearable. The acting and direction are extraordinary. Colin Farrell transforms into his role and has never been better. My family is still discussing the film today. Martin McDonagh and everyone involved deserve all the awards!!

As a Drama Teacher and a Swiftie (since 2008, OG over here 😅), whose favourite playwright is Martin (The Pillowman is one of my favourite plays) and Taylor being my absolute fav since I was 11 (now in my late 20’s) this has made my WEEK!

Actually Mcdonagh storyboarded all of Banshees by hand. He certainly collaborated with his DOP of course but he knew exactly what he was chasing in the dialogue scenes. It's this combination of precision and inspiration and daring that makes his work so enjoyable.

I love listening to her talk about her art, she's so passionate. Her one liner's are epic like "I'm preaching to the converted". I can't wait to see her feature film!!!!

honestly I'm not even a Taylor Swift fan, but she seems like a really nice person and someone who is passionate about telling stories and exploring her creativity. I see some fellow cinephiles acting really negatively towards Swift but I think it's not fair. I think it's great she's exploring this side of her creative mind, and she's not harming anyone in doing so (I say this because some people on twitter are acting like she personally killed their favourite director)

Just the simple antithesis of Taylor, knowing best how she wants it done, but also believing that being prepared & organized is the way to go for her and Martin going with the flow here & there, while also knowing how things should get done from his perspective. Both sides in conversation is truly wonderful, picking notes from here, advices from there. It really shows 'experience' vs 'beginning' a process. Both while keeping it fresh, vibrant, insightful. Also, themselves learning from eachother! From music videos to short films to full on movies. Great interview.

martin mcdonagh is a legend. i can't wait to watch banshees of inisherin. it definitely must be a masterpiece. taylor swift has always been such a trailblazer. even if you don't like her music, we have to agree that she's talented and she's an ambitious woman who isn't afraid to try extensions as she says to her music and storytelling. i'm looking forward to her directorial debut with searchlight pictures. I enjoyed watching Taylor and Martin talking about their works. I didn’t even notice it has already been 45 mins? Wow!!! They both talk with such eloquence and they both have thorough knowledge of each other’s projects and work history. Martin is a great director and Taylor has started reaching new heights with directing, this was such a good pairing for Directors on Directors. Great job, Variety!
Reading the comments I realized that most people came because of Taylor - I came because of Martin as I've loved his work as a playwright for years. I'm not a particular fan of Taylor's music, (bit too old -75 - but do love some of her songs I've heard). What I have always admired is her work ethic and her avid support of other women in the industry. It was a JOY to listen to her attitude regarding her creativity and how she listens and watches others, to constantly do better. The coupling of these artists was brilliant - it would never have occurred to me to bring them together but both were so good at asking each other about their creativity and how they work. Thank you, I could have listened to them both for a lot longer! 💜

Taylor notices everything. I think that surprises people sometimes. She's curious, well read and articulate. At their core, each of them is a story seller. Martin started as a playwright and Taylor as a songwriter. He progressed to short films and then feature length. Taylor has done the same, except she is much earlier in her journey as a director. I think Martin knew she had been contracted to do the feature length, because he asked her about it.
I think it's fantastic to have this one in the can. It will be interesting to look back on this interview five films from now for both of them.

McDanagh seems quite surprised with her eloquence as she processed her directorial debut.
So martin writes the way some people daydream. You kinda know the way you want it to go but sometimes it just has a life of its own and it fully takes the reins. It reminded me of the way Dali would do surrealism, sort of dancing on and around that line that separates the state of awake and aware from the asleep and fever-dreaming one, and trusting the subconscious to do whatever needs to be done. Whatever it is that's pushing to come out, don't try to make sense of it and manage it, just let it come out and exist. It has its reasons and its rights. Honestly, creating like that feels just incredibly cathartic and fulfilling.
Hey, if I'm not wrong, Taylor basically wrote the song All Too Well just like that, didn't she? in a spur-of-the-moment, fluid and vulnerable single 15-minute take during rehearsals.
