6:56 To not to do that, you have to revmatch when you downshift. I mean, rev matching and heel-and-toe is just something you don't have to cover for 'how to drive' video because you don't need it to be able to 'drive' a manual, but like others said you can't show other people that you are riding clutch little bit much.
EDIT: DO NOT grab shift knob like how this guy does. This could cause you to mis-shift into lower gear when you are having fun accelerating. For example, you are in 3rd and going to shift into 4th gear. If you hold the shift knob sideways, you could accidentally shift into 2nd instead of 4th, mess up the motor big time. I have seen it happening many times online to people. You have to hold from top with palm of your hand, not like this.

It seems that you are not qualified to teach other people driving manual, because you did so many wrong things that I don't even know where to start. I'll say the most incorrect one, the one that you should never do in a manual car: never ride the clutch.
omg I just noticed that he was doing that. Also he forgot to mention how after starting the car you put it in neutral and let off the clutch pedal
Or even better, make sure it's in neutral before turning the key. (well, those of us who still need to turn keys to start our cars.. heh)

Never? You have to rid it a little bit at times, and you're much safer on the road if you need to ride it a bit so you don't stall. Riding the clutch > stalling. These things were built to be used, not babied.
vince5260 You're getting "slipping" mixed up with "riding" the clutch.
Of course you need a little slip of the clutch when you're moving from a stop. Shifting uses a little slippage, too, so changing gears isn't jerky.
What we're talking about as "riding" is leaving your foot on the clutch pedal after you've shifted. You may think you're not pressing it far enough to disengage, but I'll guarantee you're helping it slip when it's totally unnecessary.
He's doing it all the time in this vid. Not once does his foot leave the clutch. After every shift, he SHOULD be putting his left foot on the "dead pedal", which is the plate on the floor to the left of the clutch pedal.

I have a 2014 Si sedan in Orange Fire Pearl. I use it for Uber in San Antonio, TX and sometimes passengers ask to see what it can do. I red line it all the time. I do it with traction control off. Makes it even more fun. :-)

2nd. if the engine is cold dont shift at 4k rpm just do 2 or 2.5 also for feul accomodatie

I love the enthusiasm of the driver for manuals but feel compelled to point out some really glaring mistakes in this guy's technique:
1. Riding the clutch - as others point out, after the bite that left foot needs to come completely off the clutch pedal...
2. Resting hand on the shifter - a bad habit that causes wear-n-tear
3. Wrong grip on shifter - driver's hand is sideways (neutral) rather than pronated...the palm should be facing down on the head of the shift knob...should always shift with your fingers/hand/wrist, not with your arm/elbow/shoulder...the pistol grip will inevitably lead to missed shifts.
4. No rev-match on the downshifts - bad for the engine, extremely unpleasant for driver and maddening for any unfortunate passengers...need to have better timing and that means engaging the brake and stabbing the gas just before re-engagement (heel-n-toe or just a tight sequence of brakes/clutch/gas...gotta engage with all 3 pedals on a downshift
5. Every car is different, and different situations call for you to stay in gear longer than others (including some rare instances where you might need to get up near the red line) but *normally* you don't want to be upshifting at over 4K RPM

Hah, I learnt manual the hard way in the 90s. Parents: here you go son. Me :ummm. The beauty of being an 18yr old is you’re willing to trial and error cause you don’t care your just happy you have a beater car to get you around. Fast forward decades as a 40yr old and I still love driving manual, wouldn’t change it, in fact whenever I drive auto I feel bored .

you need to rev match or you can really hurt your transmission and take your foot of the clutch or your gonna ride it and waste it

hey edward, quick question, I really am leaning towards purchasing the 2016 honda civic, but i've been hearing that a ton of people have been having major problems with the infotainment, and the overall new digital system in these cars. I've heard there have been a few recalls, and I'm really worried that the civic is going to break down on me. This will be my first car purchase and I don't want to purchase this car only for it to fail on me within a few days/weeks/months. Can you clarify any of this information for me? has honda fixed these issues yet? Should i get electrical insurance to be safe? it just sucks that since the car relies so heavily on the battery ( ex, infotainment, Air conditioning, digital odometers, push to start, smart key entry etc.) cause If the battery were to die, wouldn't I be screwed? I have a 2020 Si Coupe. Really fun car. Love it. One thing I noticed in your video.... You're riding the clutch severely. Not a good ideas to do that. You're wearing out your clutch faster by doing so. I would recommend getting into the habit of putting your foot on the dead pedal next to the clutch. Great video though. I enjoyed it.

Keep your foot off the clutch when not changing gears... I know this is an old video LOL... So you're probably not doing it anymore! I know someone who $$$(burned out)/killed 2 clutches in 2 weeks because he was resting his foot on the clutch the whole time he was driving those 2 weeks. Just the slightest separation of the 2 discs causes serious wear and tear. It' defenetlly takes time to comfortably have the left foot away off from the clutch when being a newbie manual driver :)
Yep. You said it. It was called Red lining. People who race do that. But in video games the red line is much lower lol like 5 or 4000

I bought a new honda civic ex-t manual transmission model. While stopped and in neutral, if I press the gas pedal all the way down to the floor, the rpm is reaching to only 5500 and dropping... shouldn’t it be reaching up to the redline which is around 8000 rpms?
Any idea or its supposed to be like this? Got it brand new recently. Year 2018.
It's supposed to be like that. I have a 2020 Si Coupe and if I'm stopped and in neutral and floor the gas, it'll only reach up to 4000rpom I think or a little less.

I agree with you that you do not need much RPM to get going. I only drive manuals and I give very little RPM to get started unless I'm in a big hurry. One glaring error I cringed at is your stopping with the clutch and coasting in neutral. Big NO, NO ! Here's the correct way to stop. You want to slow your car with engine compression and make your clutch last the life of the car. So to make a normal stop you use the brake, NOT THE CLUTCH, until the RPM is almost down to idle, and then you clutch, and pop it into neutral or downshift to another appropriate gear. The only time you would ever clutch first before idle is in an emergency (wheel lock up) stop, or on ice etc. I would be glad to show you how to do correct downshifts with rev matching. Yes, you too can make your clutch (and engine!) last the life of the car. Hope this helps

I guess real life cars, you can accelerate at lower shifts a lot more than the cars in video games. I remember if I do that in racing games, the car messes up and loses control, spins around. So I would always shift the gear up if I feel like I accelerated just the right amount. Racers would over accelerate a little bit and then shift up, but I don't know how much over acceleration a car takes and thus I lose control and spin (in a racing game)

Foot off the clutch foot off the clutch foot off the clutch TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF THE CLUTCH PRETTY PLEASE ah dangit, man. Doesn't the Engineering Explained guy say to take your foot off the clutch pedal when you're done shifting?
+ running on high speed with neutral + clutch... ehh seems like its his first ride with manual but.. who will stop you to teach others anyway?
Shifting at 3000 rpm is fine for a high rpm natured engine like this one, but you’re better off shifting at 2000-2200 rpm if you’re just driving normally. And you can cruise (not accelerate, hold a steady speed) in the highest gear that will allow the engine to run smoothly (usually no more than 1250 rpm, but as low as idle for larger engines 4.0L+). You’re going to get way better fuel efficiency. It pains me to watch people go 35 mph in 3rd gear for miles and miles, because they’re just wasting fuel. Its one thing if you’re in traffic and you need the engine braking effect of higher rpm and/or the need to accelerate suddenly, but for accelerating normally and steady speed cruising shift early.

Anyone who wants to learn manual, the easiest car to learn is a civic. Or at least the ones from like mid 2000's. You pretty much can't stall that car in terms of getting it going from a dead stop. The biting point is right at the bottom of the pedal and you don't need any skill to get it going.

Coasting in neutral, or stopping with the clutch depressed is very amateurish. The clutch will fry prematurely and I would not want to buy that car. Some guys should just stick with what they know...automatics. Correctly shifting a stick is a lost art.

heel/toe downshifting is definitely a necessity when adjusting lowering speeds/gears, hills, slippery conditions (and a fun necessity) on curves, freeway lane changes, passing maneuvers etc....but not when coming to a planned stop (such as a red light or stop sign). In those situations, coasting to a stop is very often the better option, since brake pads are cheaper/easier to replace than your clutch.
Lot of faux machismo/silly dogmatism out there when it comes to this question. Engine breaking has many important applications but it is not meant as a replacement for braking - certainly not on modern cars.
You should learn how to drive manual properly first
