I took a 3 hour manual lesson a couple of months ago and I have to say, out of all of the UA-cam "how to drive a manual", this is the most realistic and authentic virtual lesson. Excellent job! It definitely is ALL about clutch control 🙌😉

@@ryanlenigan7517 Honestly I find the "best" way to learn is on a dirt bike. Very sensitive clutch most of the time and the bike is usually light so if you fuck the clutching then you'll get thrown off. I taught a lot of my cousins how to use a clutch doing that and learning to use a clutch is all you really need to learn manual.
Other than that, just get in a manual paddock bomb and fuck around. You'll figure it out eventually if you know the basics of how you're supposed to use a clutch (pedal down when you're changing gears and when you're stopped). It helps to have someone in the car who already knows manual but its unnecessary if you aren't on public roads.

This was hands down the best explanation I've seen yet. Nate was a great teacher! I used to ride manual quads and totally thought I would.know what to do when it came to a car but needed a little more explanation. I watched and rewatched this probably 5 times and rewound it until I understood. But by the end I feel really confident getting behind the wheel and giving it a shot.

There is a difference with driving a manual transmission gasoline vs diesel. This was a very good tutorial.
I learnt to drive manual with a diesel truck. With diesel you don't have to stress too much about balancing clutch. It is pretty hard to stall a diesel manual. It runs when you come up off the clutch without applying gas.
My first time driving a gasoline manual car, I stalled it about 10 or more times before I got it to roll lol!
I love this tutorial. Thanks man!

Coming to DirtFish (from Vancouver, BC) at least once is on by bucket list for sure, especially me being a big rally/motorsports fan. I hope to get more proficient with a manual gearbox before then. Is there a need to heel-toe during downshifting/braking when driving at speed in this car? Is this a synchro gearbox?

    • @DirtFish
      @DirtFish  5 років тому

Great! We can actually teach you to drive a manual really well in about 5 minute when you are here for a class! We don't use heel-toes here at all, but some people do in rally. When you are up-shifting, you can pause just enough, a second or so, as the stick goes up to the next gear, to allow the RPM to drop a little (no extra gas), because the new RPM in the new higher gear is going to be a little lower at the same car speed and the engine and transmission will mesh more smoothly that way.
In other words, the opposite of racing the engine a little when downshifting to more closely match the speeds of the engine and transmission.

You can do it either way. If you're slowing down, it's good to keep it in gear so that the engine is helping you slow down. It save your brakes a bit.

5:57 how did the car not roll if you were on a hill and in neutral? I didn't see any parking brake engaged? Or disengaged?

13:19 when you downshifting you don't blip the throttle ..and many people suggesting you NEED to blip while downshifting...is this necessary? i own a 2020 STI ..i followed the way you taught downshifting form 3 rd to 2nd and SLOWLY release the clutch and the rev indeed rev match itself without any throttle applied...and the car run smoothly.......i wonder am i doing the right thing?? will this wear the clutch or bliping is acutally a better technquie to minimze the wear and tear thing...........thank you,

You don’t need to blip on newer car because they have synchros. But it does help match the engine rpm for a smoother shift.

It would be great if Americans realized their own car would be so much better with a manual gearbox. That would keep the manual alive, since America is a huge market.

The cars without the lever parking brake usually have hill assist i think

My 2011 Mini has hill start assist, it has a lever handbrake. Some new cars also have a feature that make the car rev for you when you are sitting in traffic all you have to use is the clutch

Theoretically, if you have driven a manual motorcycle or four-wheeled, you should be at a better position for learning

I thought that to I’ve been riding dirt bikes my whole life but it’s different from releasing the clutch with your hand then foot I learned the hard way being then preceded to stall at every light.

Just simply basics for Americans used to automatic gearbox, no heel toe, no matching revs, shortshifting, engine braking.
Not to much for a FULL TUTORIAL.
