      Thank you. The Wen leaves a sharp edge. But I really enjoy using water stones. It’s therapeutic.

    I have a question about the Wen; it seems to me that when using the guide bar to sharpen chisels against the rotation of the wheel, the guide bar is too short on the left side. I cannot use about 3/8" to 1/2' of thew grinding wheel on the left side because the hand plane blade support falls off of the guide . Do I do something wrong? Thank you for your help.

      I did the same thing when I first tried it. Just pull the guide off the bar spin it around 180° and put it back on the opposite direction knobs up and you’ll be right in the Sweet Spot.

      For western style chefs knives I use 18 to 20 degrees. It’s softer steel so a lower angle will risk of edge damage or loss of edge longevity. I did a video of how to use the Wen angle guide to get close to the angle you want. With all that said …you can color the edge bevel with marker and position and change your angle until it is erasing the marker, ie. removing metal, where you want. If you want the new angle lower than the original, erase marker from the top or shoulder of the edge bevel. If you need a more robust edge, a higher angle, than remove marker closer to the edge itself. Let me know if that doesn’t make sense.

    Not sure how rotating blade at curve changes angle... Not sure it does. When I make knives I do this all the time angle stats the same. It's like Roof that wraps around a corner... Angle doesn't change because of the wrap

      When I sharpen and make knives, I do the same thing as you, but when, sharpening on a round stone, it’s not flat using a jig it will make a difference, and your edge will look uneven

      In full disclosure, when I first got the Wen, I rotated my knives and the main difference is that the tip and areas out past the belly get Sharpened at a much lower angle.

      Sorry to blow up your question with comments, but I was thinking about it and if you don’t use a guide and you keep the knife in the exact cross section across the stone on that line, the angle will stay the same as you rotate as long as the place, the knife is touching, is on that same Cross section as it rotates

    What’s the best platform to use on that so the bench won’t get wet? I’ve used mine and gets pretty messy.

      I use an upside down lid to a storage container. Do to the shape of the lid..I also put two strips of wood under the lid to support the feet of the machine. If I had nothing else I would build a base from plywood and epoxy coat it to waterproof. Also I use microfiber cloths to remove the water that collects.

      The yellow lids from the yellow/black containers at Lowes/Costco/Home Depot have a large lip and work well. Wish I had it on my first attempt. My uneven garage floor was an unplanned gotcha.

    Your edge leading? Wheel supposed to go other way.

    • @PlayingwithKnives911
      @PlayingwithKnives911  2 роки тому +1

      Edge leading is more aggressive and faster. I find that alternating sides using just the weight of the knife right at the end gets a fine edge that can be realized once the burr is removed. I started out with your thinking, but this works.

      @@PlayingwithKnives911 I’m going to need lots of practice. I also have chosera stones 400 and 800.

    • @PlayingwithKnives911
      @PlayingwithKnives911  2 роки тому +2

      The most important thing is to get a burr established all the way across. After that use light pressure and alternate sides ( on the Wen) to thin out the burr. If you’re using stones next, skip the leather until the end. Once you get all your knives sharp….watch out family and friends. Then your skills and equipment will have improved and you’ll start over making everything even sharper. I hope you have a great time learning.
