This is at Home Depot and it’s a pretty good price
That's cool! Didn't even think of that.
When you started, did you have any issues with deep drop points or tips?
Lighten your pressure as you approach the tip . It might be helpful to stop before the tip and get closer to it as you go along. Also, stop and flip over the knife to check how close you are to the tip. That helps you get a feel for the tip
Way too long to sharpen that. Use a Dremel, remove burr, done......

Does the wen 10 inc sharpening bug fit the tormek t8?
Sorry, I don’t know if the WEN stone fits a Tormek. It’s a lot cheaper but definitely needs to be trued to be comparable. The truer is $100 but still cheaper to buy the WEN stone and tormec truer if the WEN stone fits.
Your video sucks, didn't learn anything

Nice Vid! Your kids are the Greatest
Thank you.
Ha!
Did you record this with a calculator?
Yes😊thanks my mistake. Thank you for watching my video
You mention degrees and percent. I believe you mean degrees even though you wrote the symbol for percent. Is that correct?
I could imagine it being easier to use if it were lower. I use that table to do a lot of other tasks where the height is helpful. I guess I’m to lazy to set up a new spot that’s lower. I also haven’t tried sharpening from the front. I think that might make it easier as well. How do you like your wen?
I'de lose it if I had to have my WEN that high up. The base mine sits on lets me sharpen much more comfortably. You should try using it lower and see how much easier it is. I'm 5'10", and the base is 23" from the floor at its plateau.
I have the wen sharpener, did it come with the angle jig?
No. It comes with a chisel jig. You have to order the knife jig separately. www.amazon.com/WEN-42704B-4-Piece-Sharpening-Accessory/dp/B087D58LNQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?crid=3J7A4EB62M7WH&keywords=wen+knife+jig&qid=1686825944&sprefix=wen+knife+jig%2Caps%2C124&sr=8-1
Thank you for your video. I don't have the jig, but have the WEN KNIFE accessory. How do you find the right angle.
Two ways to get the right angle. Use the angle guide…..I have a video for using it. Or try to match the original which is usually the best option. To do that mark the edge on both sides with a sharpie ( dark red blue or green). Guys the angle as you set the jig ang rotate the stone by hand. Then check the edge to see where the sharpie is worn off. If it’s coming off on the edge only then you are to high so lower the angle. If the marker is being removed from the bevel side of the edge… you are too low so adjust up. You know the angle is matched when the marker is being removed from the middle of or the entire area between the edge and the bevel.
Thanks for sharing. Very helpful.
I could have sharpened 10 knives on a 1x30 in the same amount of time
True. Sanding belts are faster. Thank you for watching.
Looks like a dull knife to me
What is the knife holder called
I’m using the small knife jig by Tormek. It attaches to a regular knife jig.
Not sure how rotating blade at curve changes angle... Not sure it does. When I make knives I do this all the time angle stats the same. It's like Roof that wraps around a corner... Angle doesn't change because of the wrap
When I sharpen and make knives, I do the same thing as you, but when, sharpening on a round stone, it’s not flat using a jig it will make a difference, and your edge will look uneven
In full disclosure, when I first got the Wen, I rotated my knives and the main difference is that the tip and areas out past the belly get Sharpened at a much lower angle.
Sorry to blow up your question with comments, but I was thinking about it and if you don’t use a guide and you keep the knife in the exact cross section across the stone on that line, the angle will stay the same as you rotate as long as the place, the knife is touching, is on that same Cross section as it rotates
So clever!!
Thanks Mom!
Where do you get one of these jigs?
This is a site I find to be well priced.. www.sharpeningsupplies.com/Tormek-Small-Knife-Jig-P470.aspx Thank you for watching and commenting Bill.
I have access to as much aluminum as I need and a welding rig; would it make more sense to make my own jigs instead of buying what Wen is offering? I see you bought the jigs - how do you feel about them? Also, I'm looking to sharpen a type of blade that's roughly 3" in length that's made for a Southern Snow 110v Snowball Machine - Is that something one of those jigs could handle? (I work for the manufacturer and we're looking for a new way to sharpen dull blades we get in our blade exchange program) You can search that type of machine if you'd like to see what I'm talking about. I bought that Wen sharpener for myself for my turning tools and planer blades, and my boss is curious to see if this thing can sharpen the blades I mentioned. Thank you so much for this video, by the way.
If you have the equipment, time, and skills to make the jigs…. Do it. It might be a fun project. If $49 for 2 different knife jigs, a scissor jig, and an axe jig seems worth it….go that route. I like the wen jigs although the Tormek jigs are able the sharpen at a steeper angle right out the box. You can modify the Wen jigs by changing one bolt and grinding one side a little to make it more low profile. Regarding resharpening the ice shaving blades…tha Wen is capable of making them very sharp again and better than new….use the sharply method to match the angle. Thank you for watching. Feel free to contact me again if you have any more questions.
Is is fairly easy to keep correct angle
You find the correct angle in the beginning using a sharpie and the angle guide. One you set your angle, make sure the knobs are tight holding the bar in place. It’s pretty easy to keep the correct angle if set up right from the start and you lift the handle while maintaining contact between the bar and jig to follow the belly (curve) of the knife. You will get the feel after sharpening a knife or two and rewatching a video to grasp the concept. The more belly in the knife, the higher you’ll lift. Oh,…when you lift the butt of the knife, it should lift towards the ceiling not the guide bar. Lifting toward the guide bar will change the angle significantly
I have a question about the Wen; it seems to me that when using the guide bar to sharpen chisels against the rotation of the wheel, the guide bar is too short on the left side. I cannot use about 3/8" to 1/2' of thew grinding wheel on the left side because the hand plane blade support falls off of the guide . Do I do something wrong? Thank you for your help.
I did the same thing when I first tried it. Just pull the guide off the bar spin it around 180° and put it back on the opposite direction knobs up and you’ll be right in the Sweet Spot.
What’s the best platform to use on that so the bench won’t get wet? I’ve used mine and gets pretty messy.
I use an upside down lid to a storage container. Do to the shape of the lid..I also put two strips of wood under the lid to support the feet of the machine. If I had nothing else I would build a base from plywood and epoxy coat it to waterproof. Also I use microfiber cloths to remove the water that collects.
The yellow lids from the yellow/black containers at Lowes/Costco/Home Depot have a large lip and work well. Wish I had it on my first attempt. My uneven garage floor was an unplanned gotcha.
I’m just unboxing my wen and having trouble getting the correct angle. Any suggestions?
Do you have a knife jig? It doesn’t come with the unit. It is necessary to have the best cleanest edge. Spend 50 and get the best one from Tormek or spend 50 and get a decent knife jig that can be modified to be almost as good but also comes with a scissor Jig (works perfectly) a flexible knife jig and an axe sharpening jig. If you are going to sharpen pocket knives (narrow or small ones). The tormec small knife jig is awesome. It works with a knife jig. Check out my 40 second video “don’t sharpen that knife until you watch”
@@PlayingwithKnives911 yes I purchased the wen jig kit along with the sharpener.
You Can sharpen a knife on the Wen Without a jig but you need to use a laser or a wire pointing in a spot on the stone so you have a reference to hold your angle across a specific line as you move your knife across the stone. Otherwise, if you go forward or backward, the angle will change.
Whether using a jig or not, I always mark the edge with a sharpie, so I can make one pass and see if the ink is being removed, where I want the metal to be removed in other words in the middle of the bevel not on the shoulder, or only on the edge
If you want to try it without a knife jig, I recommend you use a knife that you don’t really care about to learn on
On the guide it calls for 40 on that one why did you go 18?
40 is for axes. 25 and 20 are for knives. Kitchen knives are usually 20 to 12 degrees depending on the use and type of steel. Thank you for your question. Are you interested in getting into sharpening?
Have you needed to true the stone? Have you used the tormek truing jig? I've seen conflicting information on if it is compatible.
I I’ve used it twice in the last two years. The first time was to get my stone true. About 1.5 years later I used it to make my stone edges sharper after because I rounded them off too much sharpening a recurve. You have to go slow and shallow at the edges especially as you exit the stone. Let me know if you need more explanation. Thanks for your inquiry.
Great info. I'm ordering one.
Thank you for the compliment. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Where can you get that knife jig??
Tormek SVM-00 Small Knife Holder for Use with SVM-45 Knife Jig / For Sharpening Small Blades. I bought mine on Amazon.
Kurt Ison, thanks for watching.
Ingenious that's pretty slick
Amigo. Cual es el ángulo que pusiste? Yo tengo esa maquina y estoy navegando en poner los ángulos aveces pienso que esta mal el dispositivo de los ángulos.
For western style chefs knives I use 18 to 20 degrees. It’s softer steel so a lower angle will risk of edge damage or loss of edge longevity. I did a video of how to use the Wen angle guide to get close to the angle you want. With all that said …you can color the edge bevel with marker and position and change your angle until it is erasing the marker, ie. removing metal, where you want. If you want the new angle lower than the original, erase marker from the top or shoulder of the edge bevel. If you need a more robust edge, a higher angle, than remove marker closer to the edge itself. Let me know if that doesn’t make sense.
@@PlayingwithKnives911 gracias amigo
I like how you went from the WEN to the whetstone and your boy was funny! Keep up the good work.
Thank you. The Wen leaves a sharp edge. But I really enjoy using water stones. It’s therapeutic.
I thought the chef knife was supposed to use 40 degrees?
No sir. If you have high hardness high quality steel, you could go 12 to 15 degrees if you are careful with your knife. But for normal quality German style victornox category chefs knives, 18 to 22 is the range you want. Thank you for commenting and watching. I forgot to mention on the video that the WEN ANGLEguide is calibrated for a 10 inch stone and becomes less accurate less the smaller the stone gets.
I went ahead and got the angle master from tormek.

Great Job Kid!!!
Thanks Eric.
nice video, just wanted to mention, is your kaowool insulation hardened? if that stuff is still fluffy then its a pretty big lung cancer risk, you may want to look into covering it in refractory cement. also, your forge is sputtering because it's not getting proper oxygen, the chamber might be too small.
Thank you watching and taking the time to comment. I do have the wool covered in furnace cement. It came with the hells forge. I’m still playing around with air fuel mixture. As of now I leave the air wide open and the propane med high until the forge heats up…5 min. Then I limit the oxygen to lessen the oxidation and lower the propane because I’m cheap…thanks again for commenting.
@@PlayingwithKnives911 Good to know, just wanted to check. My forge also has a small chamber, i like your idea of limiting after its hot, thanks for that!
Is the wheel going down or towards you?
The wheel is coming towards the edge of the knife. Edge leading. This leaves less of a burr at the end
@@PlayingwithKnives911 do you deburr after the stone work ?
@@Cleymant yes. With scissors I keep the edges pulled away from each other as I close them. Then squeeze them together as I open them. The remainder of the burr falls off in use. It’s important to keep the edges from touching the first time you close the scissors after sharpening.
shouldn't the stone be rotating the other direction
It can be argued that edge trailing leaves a sharper edge but it’s considered by some to be less durable. Also the edge leading direction is faster and leaves less of a burr. If you use the corner to sharpen the inside part of a recurve blade, only use edge trailing so you don’t gouge
Great Job Guys
Thanks Mr Davies. Kenneth strikes again. That was my alternative title
How longste (cm) knife, can man to scharp by Tormek machine
I think it can sharpen knives up to just over 24 cm. For $ 100 on Amazon, you can buy an extra long an wide rest that allows you to sharpen longer blades like machetes and wider knives like cleavers. It is not compatible with a wen. Honestly though I wouldn’t sharpen a machete with it.
Quality work...
Thank you.
