  • Today, I'll be installing an R200 Differential from an R32 Nissan Skyline GTR into my Datsun 280z restoration project car build. I also install techno toy tuning coilovers, wilwood big brake kit, and custom, shortened Q45 axles to finish installation all of the suspension upgrades onto the car. I try to explain some of the differences in Nissan R200 differentials and some cautions about some of the misinformation online about them.

    You could use a diff form a 350z/370z or G35/G37 and saved some money its the exact same diff! :D

    • @GrindhousePerformance
      @GrindhousePerformance  3 роки тому +1

      Hey, thanks! Although the 350z diff is an r200, none of the internals or rear mounting cover are compatible with older Nissan R200 differentials. The 350/370/G35/G37 R200 is also a viscous LSD, where the R32/33 GTR is a clutch type mechanically locking 2 way. The viscous could be upgraded to a clutch type, but the cost on it wouldn't have made it worth it, especially with the rear mounting covers not being interchangeable for the R200 conversion kit I purchased

    Rear calipers mount on the top of rotor if you’re using the cable ebrake.

    • @GrindhousePerformance
      @GrindhousePerformance  3 роки тому

      Hey that's really interesting, is there a reason it needs to be on top with the cable? It looks like there's plenty of clearance having them forward?

    • @derrail_who4450
      @derrail_who4450 3 роки тому +1

      @@GrindhousePerformance After speaking with T3 they had mentioned that when using their supplied cable that the caliper should be at 12 o’clock. The orientation of the caliper I believe depends on the length of the cable being used. They had also mentioned that different cable lengths would allow you to use the caliper at any orientation. However the cable T3 supplies is meant for the caliper to be on top.

    Wow that is an awesome swap, if my OBX detonates this will be the next upgrade.
    I got an OBX unit despite the bad reviews and it came delivered awfully. Stripped bolts, almost a half a mil off on the warped casing. Took it to a driveline shop and paid them 1400 to fix it. Biggest waste, wish I went with this option.

    Awesome I am also building a Datsun and I also want to use the Kit form technotoy and I also want to use the R32 Diff but i dont see the 6 bolt driveshaft in the kit where did you buy these? or do you have any other recomandations about what diff to use because R32 GTR diffs are quite expansive these days

      I believe apex engineered sells a Ford 8.8 IRS conversion kit nowadays which will be way easier to find parts and upgrades for. I had purchased Infiniti q45 axles, and sent them to techno toy tuning to have them shortened

  • @williamparker3dartist472
    @williamparker3dartist472 Рік тому +1

    I have been really struggling with what rear end to go with. I am doing an LS swap as well with a t56 magnum behind it like you. I have been looking into the 8.8 rear end out of the explorer combined with the Apex Engineered kit, but I really like your setup. Is there anything you did to strengthen the gear set and axles, or does the R200 with the Q45 axles alone going to be enough to handle 500hp? Thank you so much for posting what your doing. It has given me a ton more to think about.

    • @GrindhousePerformance
      @GrindhousePerformance  Рік тому +1

      The answer is a little confusing, there's several different R200's that Nissan produced. The R200 I have is from an R33 Nissan GTR, which uses stronger internals and stronger axles than the ones found in S13/S14's. I've known a lot of drift folks to shy away from S13/S14 diffs after breaking axles/stub shafts, but drifting is much harder on these parts than other racing applications. Those use either the 5x1 or 6x2 axle patterns. Going off of a fuzzy memory, I think the R32 and R33 GTR Diff is the only R200 housing that uses the stronger 6x1 axle pattern that mates to the TT 300ZX R230 or Q45 R200. The Q45 R200 uses a 200mm ring gear, but smaller bolts to hold it together. The 350Z/Q45 R200 is totally different and not at all compatible with S13/S14 R200s from what I remember. There's also the difference of short nose and long nosed.. it's all a can of worms trying to make sense of old forum discussions and conflicting information... If the Apex 8.8 kit existed when I first started building the car I would've gone that route, the 8.8 is an incredible rear end with a ton of clear, concise aftermarket support and parts available. If this diff ever fails I'll probably go that route replacing it.

    the fact you didn't use the Russians kit to install the super 8.8 from the s550 bothers me.

    • @GrindhousePerformance
      @GrindhousePerformance  3 роки тому

      Truth be told, if anything in this rear end breaks there's a good chance it's being replaced with an 8.8 conversion kit. Most of the parts for my build were purchased several years ago, and at the time, an 8.8 conversion wasn't on the market. If I were to start over, or have to do it again, the 8.8 would be my choice 10/10.

    You should number your titles #1,2,3... so it's easier to follow and make a playlist. So how does this rear compare to a 280ZX turbo rear? I see they're both R200, but what's the advantage of the short vs long? I get the stronger shafts, and rear options, but are those made for all R200's?

    • @GrindhousePerformance
      @GrindhousePerformance  4 роки тому

      I hadn't really looked at z31 differentials because I looked at what 240sx drift cars upgrade to, which was typically a Q45 R200 or 300zx TT R230. The R33 takes features of the r230 without the weight, and didn't have the viscous found in the Q45. R200s seem to have a lot of conflicting info out there, so this one seemed like a safe, reliable bet for the power I'm targeting
