  • I take a break from bodywork to start preparing my LS3 Engine for installation into my Datsun 280z project car. This isn't the first engine I had planned for, but in the end, this will be the perfect package for the project. In this episode, I get started on the first steps when LS swapping your car, choosing an accessory drive layout, and oil pan for the engine. I'm going to share my experiences through the entire swap and build as we continue getting this car ready for the street this summer.

    In the END.. we all just want Smiles and Miles. There are PLENTY of issues in any swap.. .but a reliable known chassis shell with a known reliable running gear. Still has issues to work thru.
    I don't blame you for ,fore going the eco- boost.
    Nobody can beat the light weight compact ,easy to get parts for LS motor.
    You can have your cake and eat it to with the LS.
    Reliable power per dollar per pound you CAN NOT beat.
    I'm building two Z cars with L28's.
    But I subscribed because I like ,you thought it thru.. and here you are FORD dropped the ball and Chevy is " on the ball !"

      Thank you! I wouldn't give up hope, most of my experience was when the engine was just released. You might find it easier now, but it'll still be an expensive swap for the package!

    Sadly, Ford motor swaps just can't compete with LS swaps as far as cost, and LS have been swapped into damn near everything. So there is a lot of info out there. Just build it to enjoy it, it's gonna be sweet.

      As interesting and unique as it would've been with the 2.3, I wouldn't have loved it as much as I know I will with the LS. I'm just an unsophisticated big V8 kindve guy I guess 🤣

    I'm 19 and I just bought a 77 280z a couple months ago and was going through the exact thought process that you did, I was set on an RB swap but it had to be RB26 or RB25 but then after doing about a day or two of thinking I just decided on an LS1/T56 combo because you really can't beat it. I'm 2 months into the build and I already got the lightweight Wilwood kit all the way around from Silvermine and I have the motor at the machine shop right now getting rebuilt and getting the Texas Speed Chop Monster cam put in it. I'm focusing on getting the car running and prioritizing drivetrain parts first like brakes and suspension and then do interior and body work, I know it would just eat me alive to not be able to drive the car for another year or two if I waited until last to do the motor, so hopefully my car will be on the road in maybe a month or two? I'm also going carbureted because it makes the swap 10x easier and I think it does justice to the fact that all the classic S30's were carb'd as well, and even with going carb over efi I should still be looking at a little over 400whp, and I'm gonna eventually put a 100 shot on it so it'll be rowdy. I'm also not cheaping out on the build but I'm saving money wherever I can because that's the main thing keeping me back, but your build is awesome and I can't wait to see it on the road! I know I'm pouring thousands into my setup so I can't even imagine what you're throwing into yours, keep up the good work!

      That's awesome! Sounds like you're moving really quickly! Momentum is huge in projects like this. If I were to do it all again I would do smaller stepped improvements where I could still drive and enjoy the car in between. That'll still be a blast to drive, looking forward to hearing about your progress!

      @@GrindhousePerformance Thanks a lot! I'm gonna try and post videos of my own, but probably not of the restoration itself just documenting progress because if I were to film everything and edit it then my build would take way longer than I'd like.

    • @GrindhousePerformance
      @GrindhousePerformance  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, I'm finding it takes 3-4x longer for me to film, script, and edit the build process, but it's honestly really, really cool going back to watch the progress made from previous videos. It's also hugely motivating sharing with fellow builders or enthusiasts. I'd say record as much as you can!

      @@GrindhousePerformance Nice! What was your reason for not going 2JZ?

    • @GrindhousePerformance
      @GrindhousePerformance  4 роки тому

      The 2JZ would've done a good job satisfying the Japanese inline 6 roots of the 280z, but if I was going to go with an engine manufacturer that wasn't Nissan, I preferred the LS to 2JZ. The debate to me was more RB versus LS, but that might just be because I haven't had a lot of personal experience with JZ engines. Maybe in the next build??

    Hey man, great build and nice videos! I am also using the same oil pan for my 280z build. Not sure if you are going to add an oil cooler. I did and I have some header clearance issues with the inlet and outlet fittings. I spoke with MAST since they only want you to use the fittings that are included with the pan. The only way to use different fittings like a banjo or otherwise (which are low profile) is to take a freeze plug and plug the hole that is in between the inlet and outlet holes inside the pan. Doing this will allow you to run any type of fitting. This was recommended by MAST technical support.
    Thought this might help if you run into clearance issues if you decide to run an oil cooler.
    Keep up the good work!

    Awesome content. My question for you is how/where do we research if an engine works (reliably) in an application. I had some of the same concerns but really have fallen in love with I6 M-series engines. Information on N55/S55 to Datsun are limited shy of B 4 Build.

    • @GrindhousePerformance
      @GrindhousePerformance  4 роки тому +1

      I'm definitely the wrong person to ask that for haha. I was so excited about the 2.3L that I bought a totaled EcoBoost Mustang without ever taking a tape measure to anything. This wound up with the shifter basically planted next to the seat-backs in such a tiny car. I'd definitely see what measurements, if any, you can take before spending money on anything. I hadn't really considered how much larger/boatier the new Mustang is compared to the old Z. I think the approach would be finding information on N55/S55 swaps into -anything- and then having to use your context clues to see what may or may not apply universally, or what may apply to your specific install. I do think I've seen a couple of those though, do think it's doable.

    The comment you made about not having parts on hand at a track day; you really should have a few parts on hand at an event especially if you are gonna be getting into tracking the car hard and frequently

    • @GrindhousePerformance

      Right, I'd rather have things on hand if given the option and will keep spares of what I can. However, if parts are having to be sourced on short order, you'd still have a much easier time sourcing LS components over RB
