Doing that with a single infantry served weapon is not such a good idea, due to the issues that arise from increased wear with weapon systems. The M2 was used to reach out and touch enemy infantry at extreme distances but more importantly it can punch through Russian IFV armor. The M2 can tear through BTRs, BRDMs, Tunguskas and Shilkas. The REAPR will blend the reach out range of the M2 and the weight of an M240, problem is, it wont be as lethal as the M2 against harder targets and it will wear out faster than the 240. Its pros are massive and its cons are bypassable, but it will never replace the M2. Dont replace what works, replace what doesnt. TL;DR its entire job isnt to replace the M2, but to give infantry the same reach out and touch capabilities as the M2 without requiring a HMVVW or JLTV/MATV with an M2.
Ok so I know the guy that made the .338 norma... Lol he gets .02 for everyone manufactured him and my uncle are very good friends. So the cartridge was kinda a dud till the 300smk came out so it has to use match bullets essentially to get the good properties your talking about, the larger the caliber the higher the BC. If you put match bullets in a .50 it would smoke the.338, that's just a bullet change. They are going back to war calibers 😉 the are replacing 556 with a intermediate magnum and 308 with long action Magnus... The US is planning to win something 💀 and the civilian market needs to keep up before we get out paced lol
Depends on what you're shooting at. At 1500m a 300gr 338 will be moving at 1200fps and hit with 950ft-lbs. At the same distance a 660gr 50bmg will be going at 1400fps and hit with 2800ft-lbs. The 338 is unlikely to penetrate modern body armor. The 50bmg would go straight through it, and most unarmored or lightly armored vehicles. This isn't meant to replace the M2. It's meant to supplement the M240.
MMG, GPMG, two terms for the same thing. Most MGs, including the 240/MAG are MMGs. This is a lot heavier in terms of ballistics. This is an actual HMG optimized for anti-personnel rather than anti-materiel. The range for the weight is awesome if the logistics can be made to work.
13:31 Ah yes, the .762 very common caliber. Amusing the grafics are larger, too, based on the typo. I don't think that gun could handle almost 20mm cannon rounds. (It should be 7.62)
True, but the optics have made the battlefield longer than before, at least for accurate fire. That won't go away. The enemies of the US have the internet too and have learned to stay our of range of the M4, so there will be an increasing amount of battles started at over 500m. It had gotten to be about 1 in 6 engagements in Afghanistan starting at over 500m, FWIW (based on NDIA presentations concerning overmatch, a decade or so ago). I personally think the US should use a "weapons locker" approach and choose whatever weapon will work best in a particular situation. In other words, use 5.56 when kicking doors, and something longer-ranged in open country.
@@jfess1911 Now now, we can't have that, it would make too much sense! Joking aside, the logistics would be a little more complicated, however, they do need to bring both .556 and 7.62 anyway, so it shouldn't be that hard to manage.
@@nate2838 I just hope that it does not take a disaster with a lot of US Soldiers lost to switch the thinking. I could see 7.62x51 largely phased out for handheld weapons and replaced with something that works better at distance, but I am not sure that the current 6.8x51 is the right answer.
@jfess1911 the way i see it the 6.8 phases out the 5.56 and the 338 replaces 7.62. Basically doubling effective range of infantry units. We will see if the 6.8 works, i personally think it might be too much, and that the training ammo works good enough, but i dont know the ins and outs of body armour capabilities.
The quality of Ohio Ordnance on my M1919A6 with tripod was top notch! When I opened the box’s was really taken back with the looks. After cleaning and reading TM’s on them M1919A6. Most,of the parts were Israeli made, but the receiver was Ohio Ordnance. At the range it was a head turner and function almost flawlessly. They had an Argentine Colt Machine Gun in 7.65 Argentine that was just stunning in polished blued finish and believe brass was polished too on the original bipod! They made/make a BAR M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle in 30-06 Springfield a semiautomatic really close to the original! They’ve been making firearms for awhile you probably never heard of them, but tne have incredible skill and talent. So happy they are getting some real exposure!
@task and purpose I don’t want you to think I’m talking trash. I really am just trying to help you avoid mistakes with muzzle energy. You said that gun had 50% more energy. It’s actually close to double the energy. If a bullet weighs 2X as much and is traveling at the same rate of speed it has 2X the kinetic energy. If a bullet is traveling 2X as fast as another identical bullet it has 4X the kinetic energy. Also, some easy ones to remember or you can get close enough to remembering. 22.3% faster is 1.5x more energy, 41.4% faster is 2x more energy, 73.2% is 3x and finally 100% faster is 4x the muzzle energy. This is why when looking at a slight change in velocity make sure you realize 20% is a huge. Keep up the amazing work. We know they didn’t trust you with the calculator.
Fn evoly doesnt really do anything that the saw or mark48 doesnt already do. Plus it has a weird barrel change system that isnt quick. Looks cool might be more reliable.

German G8 / HK21 did exactly fulfill that rule back in the day, you could convert it from bolt action to belt fed with only a few simple steps. It was just as big as an G3 but had a heavier and longer barrel. It could be used as a LMG or a sniper rifle.

I think the concept has absolute merit. The m2 is such a stable and effective tool, but just too heavy for mobile use. This comes somewhat close to the performance while being very portable.
I too have done a lot of hiking, my mother is actually a famous long distance hiker. I could carry it in my bag but this gun weighs as much as her entire loaded pack
Kinetic energy is actually 1/2 mass x velocity ^2. So increasing the mass of the projectile nets small gains while increasing the velocity nets exponentially more gains.
True. But a lighter bullet will lose a far greater % of its energy sooner, making it less useful further downrange. Accurate long range fire is the key for this weapon. I'd love for a 3 round burst mode of this MG in addition to the single fire mode. I've never been a fan of full auto outside of emplacements. Ammo is heavy.

there is an argument to be made that the 556 range is fine for 99% of engagements an there are only a few circumstances that are very rare where 762 x 51 doesnt cut it , which would mean its not worth changing entire regular units weapons in most cases yeah
Also it should be said, the cost of 'expensive' firearms for all our NATO troops is approximately naff all compared to you know, having to go to their mum's house and explain why they're dead. We can easily afford to have the technological advantage in this area and in every instance in history it's been worth the investment for the dominant military of the time. If you want to save the money, all you need to do is properly control the military procurement procedure and get fair prices for aircraft carries, vehicles, and Coke vending machines.
Its not about range its about armor Body armor has become common place and easy to get for basically anyone 5.56 rounds are ineffective 7.62 is slowly becoming ineffective 50 cal will penetrate any body armor as well light to medium armored vehicles but 50 weapons are extremely heavy 338 is a happy medium because its powerful enough to defeat armor and damage light armor but still light enough to be carried by squad level on down
8:38 not only is it "over 50% more kinetic energy power bullet", it's almost double .338 having ~1.9 times the kinetic energy of 7.62 At least, based on the masses and velocities stated in the video.
I remember shooting some magnum rifle cartridges with a friend over 10 years ago, .300 and .375, and commenting that a medium MG in .300 and .375 would give an infantry unit extended range and an ability to smash things that while not quite M2 browning level, would exceed an M240 or a Mk48. Glad to see someone is trying the concept with an even better cartridge

How many of these drones that can reach 1500 yards and be lethal can you carry? And how long can you effectively keep a group of enemies suppressed? I don't know the answer to these questions. Just seems to me like that would be what they need to balance. Another thing with drones is if they had jammers active in the area. You can jam a drone, but you can't jam a bullet.
Interesting Video, thank you! Small correction; video time line 12:01 - the depiction of the weapon being refered to as the MG3 is not a MG3. I served in a Jägerbataillon and was a MG-Schütze, so I remember what the darn thing looked like which I lugged around the forests :-)
One thing the reapr needs to do is mount itself to the soldiers body armor. Back in the day, knights use to set their lance inside a hook under their arm that was mounted to their torso armor. This helped stabilize the lance while riding the horse. Imagine being able to take half the weight off the reaper by hooking it to the plate carrier while the soldier is in motion, that would be wild.
I´m not sure what kind of abdomination M249 you show at 12:03 in the video, but that is everything but an MG3. The MG3 looks basicly like th eMG42 on the outside with some changes to the muzzledevice, bipod and an additional anti air sight. THe other changes are on the internals (parts of the bolt) and ofcourse the calibre changed from 8x57 to 7.62x51. Hell during my time in the german army as an armorer (around 2010) We had MG3s in the armory who had the WW2 markings crossed out on the reciver and simply new markings put next to em.
.338 is not a new caliber, however there are new cartridge sizes. I bought a BAR grade II hunting rifle in .338 Winchester in 1991, and it was old then. It served me well. The .338 Lapua came along later, and now the .338 Norma. The .338 Win Mag is a really versatile big game hunting round, so I can imagine the Norma version can be a good anti-material round with a tremendous punch.
The .338 Norma is a re-worked .338 Lapua. The OAL is the same, but the case is shorter, allowing longer bullets to be used. That helps with AP, API, ammo as well as tracers.
I love how slim the mg is. It's called the "REAPR", and is sleek like a scythe, kinda neat isn't it? And there's just something so aesthetically pleasing to me about a (bigger than regular) rifle-sized gun that's slim like a stick and prioritizes simplicity like an AK, but spits heavy lead at a satisfying rpm.
So we have SMG, LMG, MMG, HMG, GPM (and maybe Lightened Machine gun for the MG08/15) and now LMMG. Is the designation really necessary? It is just a GPM
I love how a real semi auto switch is becoming more prevalent in modern machine guns. Makes it so much easier to zero the gun and also has some combat applications.

A Javelin Anti tank Top Attack rocket launcher is far more effective and has the same range as an M2 for anti light armor purposes but the cost of one of those is the same cost as easily 100 belts of 100 rounds of SLAPP for an M2.
The M2 is far more effective than most people give the old Ma credit for, and even a graze from a round from an m2 (not center of mass, but hitting the meat of the arm. Dont believe the BS of a near miss still killing. Not physically possible) will put you down, Bloodloss from a loss of a limb leads to loss of life in around 60 seconds-ish without a tourniquet.
Another great infantry tool evaluation!
Amazing that 80+ years later, the MG42 is still largely the inspiration for modern machine guns. What an insanely well designed gun for its time.
Amazing, yeah, but not as amazing as still being in use 100+ years later like the M2.

It goes to show the brilliance of the MG-42 design. This looks like a great weapon. Fingers crossed that a home-grown gun gets the contract.

Ah, the perfect squad weapon for long range engagements in Afghanistan.
Militaries always adopt the best weapons to fight the last war.
I understand the desire to only deal with one type of ammo and weapon for for logistics sake, but 5.56 will be around for for non-frontline-combat troops anyway.
I could see 7.62x51 largely phased out for handheld weapons and replaced with something that works better at distance, but I am not sure that the current 6.8x51 is the right answer.
wouldnt that just be a 308 PK?
@jfess1911 the way i see it the 6.8 phases out the 5.56 and the 338 replaces 7.62. Basically doubling effective range of infantry units. We will see if the 6.8 works, i personally think it might be too much, and that the training ammo works good enough, but i dont know the ins and outs of body armour capabilities.
