I never knew about the name of Jacob' s Ladder I thought it was the name given to many steep slopes in the Derbyshire area. Many thanks for your lovely photography I used to live up there and was up there many many times and am so pleased to watch this. Edale Rocks and all that. Lovely, thanks.
Great vidio And you could the moment just right, all the best Pat
Thanks Pat love it up there as i know you do & there's not many nicer places on night's like that.tfw..Andy.
I didn't know about Jacob's Ladder. Lovely video.
lots of history in the peak district its part of the romance to the place that draws me in tfw.
Lovely film again Andy.
Some of the shots have been framed beautifully.
Thanks again for sharing.
John
Thanks John & tfw much appreciated..Andy.
Hi Andy, good to see the Alpkits on test, interesting design, they look like they'll be really warm. Look forward to seeing some more feedback in the wind. Thanks for sharing and happy camping. A
Hi Andrew had actually been looking for a while for a lightweight option without spending a fortune & had actually watched a few of your'e vids on the 3f-ul gear tents.was literally decided on ordering one of those but then alpkit released this one & it made my mind up on the spot,i know they do great gear & if ever theres a problem with it i know i can take it to the hathersage store as i live near & they will sort it no problem.tfw mate..Andy.
@@AndrewBeavers Actually could you do me a big favour if you get a chance ( and even video it ) ? I'm wondering if you place a set of walking poles in an A frame outside the fly and in line with the side pullouts. Im thinking you could turn this into a 4 season beastie if i can brace poles at the handles and wrap the side guylines round each pole before pegging out ? If so it will be bomber in side gusts ? I may be mad but if it works I could really use one of these ! A
@@AndrewParkOutdoors Hi Andrew i sort of get the jist of what your'e suggesting but im heading on hol today & wont be able to have a look at seeing if that was viable for a t least 3 week.ill have a look though when i get chance.Andy.
Super video Andrew on one of my favourite places. Tent looks interesting. Look forward to seeing how it works long term.
Thanks Alan one of my fav regular spots up there too..first impressions of the tent are good but will see how it copes in worse weather.tfw..Andy.
Great informative video as always. I’d sleep t’other way round. Only downside if it’s pissing it down inner pitched first.
Stunning footage & music. 👍🏻
Thanks Michael ayy im gonna try other way round next time & ayy thats my only concern with it if i ever get caught out in bad weather.tfw..Andy.
Andrew Beavers I’ve just watched a video which shows how to pitch it outer first, a bit fiddly but handy for if it’s lashing it down.
Any new videos due 🥾⛺️✌🏻
Good on Jacob Marshal ey Andrew. A nice felloow who has left a cracking legacy in the hills there. I'm not up there but can appreciate that. I think the soloist is a good little tent. Dave at Boder Rambler featured the same tent in his last video. Well, it was good to see you going light and indeed out with your dad. A fine wild camp. All the best. Mark
Hi Mark how you keeping mate..yes there's a lot of history in that area,a massive ancient trade & packhorse route.it always amazes me the work these people put in selfishly centuries ago & as you say their legacy's still in use & appreciated today..yes iv'e just watched Dave's video as i'd uploaded mine..haha Dan isn't my dad mate he's a friend & believe it or not he's only a few year older than me but then i'm like a fine wine i get better with age lol....tfw Mark & take care..Andy.
@@AndrewBeavers I'm evolving Andrew. Yeah their energy lingers in them paths and ways they built for us. It's beautiful! I thought you might have seen Dave's video - the Alpkit is getting popular. Ha ha - I thought you said 'Dad' and not 'Dan.' You must excuse me Andy. Peace!
Hi andy Beautiful mate looked a great camp That tent looks ok mate as you say it wants a good wind test be interesting to see how it performs in wind Enjoyed that andy great watch Till next time take care atvb chris
Thanks Chris ayy i need it out in some rougher stuff to see how it performs,i'm sure it'll perform well with how it's constructed as it's pretty sturdy but we'll see.tfw mate..Andy.
Nice bit of background info there, on a place I know very little about. Looks a nice, small lightweight tent to be fair, although, a bit snug for me. Loved the time lapse and shooting stars, looked like you picked a great night for a camp. Cheers Alan
Thanks Alan I like to know a bit of history to places especially the peak district as i frequent it regularly.the tent is a lightweight option for some longer walks iv'e planned so won't be my main tent, first impressions though are good, just need to get it out in some rougher weather to see how it performs.tfw mate..Andy.
Great one Andrew.. Do like that tent.
Thanks & i do but need to get it out in some rougher weather to see how it fares. tfw..Andy.
Cracking video mate, nice interesting info on Jacobs ladder, I'm hoping to do a wild camp up there myself one day, that alpkit tent looks great, seen it on a few videos now and I'm impressed, really well filmed as always, 👍👍
Thanks..like to know a bit of history to the places I hike & camp.i know quite a bit regarding that particular area & surrounding just by reading up etc..cracking place up there & the tent on first impressions is good but need to get it out in some rougher stuff see how it fares.tfw mate.Andy.
Great to see your opinion on this. I’m 6’1” too and thought it would be too short but it looks big enough.
H mate ayy it's comfortable for us 6 footers but any taller & you would be touching the inner.tfw Andy.
Lovely introduction about Jacobs ladder, really set the scene for what was to follow. Just finished watching Dave’s video ( Border Rambler) showing his new tent then would you believe it two more appear in your video! Lol! I would be very interested to see how this performs pitched into the wind, with those sloping sides it looks like it should do well. Love those time lapses and soundtrack 👍👍👍
Thanks Anthony yes i like to know my history with the peak district & along there it's quite steeped in history going back to the 16'th century with the trade routes etc..I'd seen Dave's vid just as i'd uploaded mine so good to see them being popular early doors, looking forward to getting out in some rougher stuff to see how it performs,i'm sure it will do well as the way it's constructed it's pretty sturdy.tfw.Andy.
Great vid mate. Some great editing and background music. I'm a big fan! 😉
Thanks Andy & tfw much appreciated..Andy.
I was up there last night mate,if you where over near mushroom rock I saw you catching the sunrise,I was over ner seals stone.
Hi Liam we were at the woolpacks but i do know who was over at fairbrook,a guy called Chris Hall we follow each other on twitter,he's an oldish guy & we spoke yesterday & he said he was heading to there so it will have been him you saw..seems it was quite busy up there last night,we saw at least 6 others this morning but who can blame us it was a grand night & morning.tfw mate..Andy.
Great Video, I'm look at getting the Soloist... looking forward to see how it gets on in different weather conditions and your views
Thanks Graeme my first impressions are good but like you say the real test will be in some harsher conditions which will give me a better idea of it's capability.tfw..Andy.
@@AndrewBeavers Thanks for the message back... you are inspiring me to get back in the mountains... just in the process of sorting new gear out to get wild camping... Just dead expensive... I'm keen on 2 tents and you have both... the big question... which one... Soloist or Zephyros?
@@outdooradventure4590 I'm glad it's an inspiration for you Graeme as thats what i like it to be to show folk like your'e self whats out there for us to enjoy..
Ooh now the zeph or soloist..there's two main factors in choosing here..i'm 6'1" so being able to sit up in a tent is a big thing for me,the space in the soloist is ample i can get my bag in & other bits of kit easily so plenty for me for the reason iv'e bought it & i can sit up right quite easily but the porch space is limited, room for boots & limited cooking gear.
now the zeph if you go with the 2 manner as mine is is very spacious inside, has a good porch size the full length as it's a side entrance where as the soloist is front entry.very good tent that has served me well over 4 years..but the main thing is i cant sit up right in it so thats the main issue with it for me.
weight wise the soloist is 1380kg with footprint,1200 with out so a very lightweight tent..zeph is 1800 all in but doesn't have a footprint.
The answer for me if i was buying from scratch with the info i have on both tents would be the soloist, purely because i can sit up in it,the porch size is just something i will have to work around.
hope this helps Graeme..the choice is now your's lol..Andy.
@@AndrewBeavers Thanks for the Andy... See I'm only 5'10" so I prob would be able to just sit up in the Zeph... I love the Soloist and love all the kit Alpkit do... I'm in the process of ordering a bag and mat off them... I like both tents... but in my view the only thing that lets the Solo down is the porch... love to see how you get on in wind/rain for cooking... that is the only thing that puts me off the Solo... are the zips two way or just up and down on both side... was thinking maybe you could put an eye loop on both corners of the door and use walking poles on lowest setting and maybe make some sort of shelter over the door... but thanks so muck for your thought and keep them videos coming... they are all belting!
Check out @Border Rambler new upload... its made up my mind what to go for...
I wish my two lads were into wild camping I’d love to do it with there help of course, great video Andy thanks for sharing pal.
Thanks Neville ayy it'd be great getting the young un's up there if they were interested im sure they'd love it.tfw..Andy.
Great video mate, some awesome time lapses as always 👍🏻 looks a good little tent does that alpkit, seen quite a lot of people with them on the FB groups too lol hopefully getting some longer trips out myself this year so I’m also after some lighter gear
Thanks for sharing Atb Mark
Thanks Mark..first impressions are good mate but need to get out in some rougher weather to see how it fairs.main reason i bought it really for the longer walks ive planned limestone way, gritstone trail etc so a good option for lightening & lessening the pack size.tfw mate..Andy.
Got limestone way on my list, are you doing full route or just Matlock to Castleton?
If full, do you have a route map of it as I’m struggling to find the part leading to Matlock 👍🏻
@@MarkTayloroutdoors Hi Mark..im doing the full route mate south to north starting in Rocester.i could send you a link to the route via twitter or fb messenger if you like.the bit you a re on about though the route comes in from sw into a place called upper town & then takes off again nw through winster.from upper town though theres an alternative route that carries on into Matlock too.
I traced it on my Os map and I think it goes past Matlock, but you can take a alternative route through it if you wish. If you could send it on Fb messenger that would be awesome 😎
Ps I’m also going to go south to north
I enjoyed that thanks Andrew. I own the Alpkit Tetri and have done a couple of vids on it on my channel. I'm tempted to invest in the Soloist though. My only query was how it would handle in wind or stormy weather. Have you tried it under different conditions at all? Thanks again and a very relaxing, chilled video. ATB - Ben aka Londoner Outdoors.
Hi Ben it's not an intention to take it out in rough weather really,it's more an option for summer lighter weight longer walking & camps.if i get caught in bad weather i'd have to see how it faired obviously.i think it would take a fair amount with how the poles are constructed but rear end into wind.decent tent imo the inner space is good,my only nark with it is the porch space & the one way zip from the bottom other than that im happy with it.tfw.Andy.
By-eck that’s a fine Lancashire accent 😉
Awesome vlog I’m gonna have to binge watch your other vlogs now mate.
Lancashire 🤔😂 Yorkshire born & bred me lad 😉 TFW mate & hope you enjoy the others 👍 Andy.
Nice one Andy, Bet you had a laugh at Dan for Wye Explorer's comment, must admit I wasn't sure if you said "dad" the first time as well lol. Don't know if you had any joy with the milky way, unfortunately in the UK in mid summer you never get a true astronomical night as the sun is never more than 18 degrees below the horizon - I find earlier or later in the year to be better. Anyway thoroughly enjoyed it (and the history) and always amazed at how quick you get your vids on to youtube. ATB Phil
Thanks Phil ayy i had a laugh at it & especially as someone else has commented too thinking he's me dad lol.he's a mate & actually only a few year older than me lol..ayy the milky way id hoped for some good stuff but it was way too bright even gone midnete, was a shame as the core is best at this time of year but as you say the sun never drops low enough.a better dark sky area may be a better bet.always like to know some history to places i go as it makes for a better experience & the peak district is steeped in history.tfw..Andy.
Cheers - if you want to improve on your milky way pics you should investigate a star adventurer or similar - mind it's more weight to carry! regards Phil
Fantastic mate, recipe for a good watch....glorious sunshine, rolling hills, fluffy clouds and a new tent to boot 👌. The tent looks ace especially for the price and weight, significantly reduces the pack weight and bulk. Was there any condensation at all? Shame about the astro side but cant win em all buddy. Anyways cheers for sharing and will try n get something sorted for July mate. Spk soon Steve
Thanks Steve ayy can't beat it when the conditions are like that any where you go.the tent was just the thing i'd been looking for & it certainly lightens the pack up.had a bit of condensation in the door & entrance but there were zero breeze all nete mate & as you know that's a recipe for condensation no matter what tent your' in.It's pretty well ventilated too & the inner is a third mesh at the top so with a bit of wind i think it will perform well.
I was hoping for some great star stuff & the milky way core as this time of year it's at it's best but it was way too bright mate it was unreal even gone midnete, need a better dark sky area for that like wales or similar.tfw pal & catch up soon.Andy.
Hi Andy Enjoyed watching that mate. Nice review, glad your supporting a local brand and nice to see your Dad up there with you. When will your Mrs be joining you on a wildcamp? 😜 Cheers Simon
Thanks mate i'd been looking for a lightweight option for some longer walks & this came up at the right time..haha your'e the second comment thinking Dan is my dad,he's a mate & only a few year older than me lol...as for my mr's getting out wildcamping there's no chance mate, she likes her creature comforts way too much lol.tfw..Andy.
@@AndrewBeavers oops haha sorry Dan / Dad! Still trying to mek out your accent mate. As for the Mrs, she's obviously sensible. Going to go up Kinder proper for the first time next month. Fingers crossed for the weather. Not as good as last year eh. Final question mate... LAKES OR PEAKS. Which wins?!?
@@123flibble321 haha ayyy a lot of folk struggle to understand me sometimes i am quite broad yorkshire but proud of it..ayy my Mr's is the sensible one lol..hope you enjoy your'e first outing & the weather is kind.
ooh now lakes or peaks..i love the lakes mate the mountains, tarns, lakes the views are amazing & has a unique pull & the fact im on with the wainright's currently 95 done of the 214..but..the peak district has a special pull for me mate & will always win over the lakes, yes it's not got the mountains, tarns & lakes & an amazing beauty but the peaks have that special rugged beauty to it,the history the place has & the folk lore & tales are just amazing & is something which you don't get anywhere else & that is what always pulls me back to it.so yes the peak district will always be no1 for me.
@@AndrewBeavers good to hear the Peaks wins mate. I love the history of the peaks as well as the fact that it was the first national park, the mass trespass, the sad but intriguing history of the b29 and sabre jet plane crashes, and the legends of the lost lad, cut throat bridge and jacobs ladder that you have furnished me with. Thanks for the inspiration to get out there. I also love the Lakes. Went up helvellyn many time as a young lad. But love living right near the Peaks now and hope to get up there as often as possible. There's a couple of nice spots right here in Matlock. Have you heard of Giddy Edge on High Tor?
@@123flibble321 iv'e heard of giddy edge but never been or seen pics of the place so you've just put me on a little mission as i'll be looking that up now to see if it's viable to get a tent up top ;-)
Hello Andrew. I enjoyed the intro regarding Jacob Marshall, never knew that! Not a wild camper myself. Prefer my creature comforts, ie a bed, central heating etc. I was hoping you were going to show us the sunrise. I was thinking of going up to Mam Tor to take some images of the sunrise, but I didn't quite make it! Who chose the music? Diabolical! Keep the vids coming. Regards Robert
Thanks Robert i like to know a bit about the history especially the peak district as i'm frequently up there & it's a nice thing to be able to let others know a little bit about these places.good conditions evening & night so the sunset & sunrise were good.tfw.Andy.
Great video Andrew , I have camped on woolpack many of time and found some great spots to pitch , I have been looking at getting a Alpkit Soloist do not sure I would get the labrador in with me , subbed you Atb Mally
Hi Mally thanks for the sub much appreciated..woolpacks is a great spot camped up there many times plenty spots up round there.great little tent the soloist but no i doubt you'd get a labrador in there with you lol.tfw.Andy.
You still using the soloist, and do you still rate it
I heard that Jacob let his pack horses follow the route and he took the shortcut so he could have a break and a pipe.
Hi Norman..that could well have been the case, the higher longer route was the original route the horses used to take & there is an old barn type structure ruin half way up where i suspect they used to stop off.either way great history to the place & love the area.tfw.Andy
Did you get any shots of milky way. I'm dieing to try and shoot it. But always out of view 😊 brilliant video by the way
Unfortunately not Jason it was way too bright, even at midnight the sky was still dark blue & the ambient light was just way too light.need to be in a better dark sky area to get a better view of it really.the Yorkshire Dale's & north York moors are good places,I've seen it really well up there.tfw mate..Andy.
It’s a sub from me mate! - Ben aka Londoner Outdoors👍⛺️👍
Thanks & tfw.Andy.
Great stuff Andy, beautifully filmed mate. Did you manage to get a view of the stars? the reason I ask is we have been parking up at the bottom of Mam Tor the last six months or so on a Friday night and I never seem to be able to get a good starry night from this location, maybe its the light pollution from Sheffield? also have you heard from Chris Pinnel at all? would love to catch up with him. The new Alpkit tent looks nice and light, well a heck of a lot lighter than the soulo lol. :) Tim/Mandy
Thanks Tim..didn't get any Astro unfortunately mate as it was just way too light even gone midnight shame really.peak district isn't too bad in winter but in summer it just doesn't get dark enough with the light pollution from Manchester & sheffield.the tent on first impressions is good, just need to get it out in some rougher conditions.
I've not seen not heard owt from Chris in a long time Tim,seems he's disappeared off Facebook too.shame as I'd have liked to have kept in touch with him too.tfw mate & atb..Andy.
Nice filming Andy , looks like you had better luck with the weather than me . How did you find the Soloist ? It is an ideal overnighter tent but does lack space . I notice you got ur bag in , I left mine outside and covered it with the rain cover . But for the money I just had to get one . Another belting camp atb Dave 👍🏻
Thanks Dave.had been looking around for a lightweight option for a while for some longer walks iv'e planned so this came up just about the right time.found it ok on first impressions but ill see how it copes in some rougher conditions.i thought there were plenty space inside actually,i'd say more floor space than the soulo.just the porch space that lacks but enough for boots & minimal cooking gear.tfw mate..Andy.
Great video… thanks. Can I ask, is that the standard size, or the extra large? I am 6’ so not sure which size is best. Also, do you still use this tent or have you gone on to something better. Any recommends appreciated. Just started wild camping after a 40 year gap! So looking for lightweight, but functional. Thanks again, Andrew.
Thanks Ian..yeah its the standard size soloist..im also 6' & i got on fine with it.just the porch size is unusable if tent bound in bad weather..not used it in a while as i bought the pretents soloist which is a pyramid style tent which im prefering at the moment.tfw.
Great film, as ever Andy. I miss your little table and growler though 😂. If you’re going lightweight though, a growler would weigh more than that tent. Take care mate ATB Jiffy 👍🏻
Thanks Jiffy ayy main reason for the tent is to go a bit lighterweight for some longer walks iv'e planned & it ticked the box just nice.things like the table & other little luxury bits like a few stronger drinks ;-) will be sacrificed when going lighter & ayy one of those growlers weighs quite a bit lol.tfw mate..Andy.
Great video mate! What a beautiful place. I've got the same pack as yourself! How are you finding it? Subbed BTW :)
Hi mate & thanks..ayy the exos is a great bag nice, light & extremely comfortable.had it around 18 month now & really like using it.tfw mate & the sub.Andy.
