This is great! Thanks for the video! Like I mentioned on the previous video, would be awesome to see a step by step on 2 things: 1) Migrating data from my Synology to the UNAS Pro (assume a simple drag and drop with both NAS's running) 2) Build out a mini PC (beelink, etc) for synology pointing back to the UNAS pro. Would love docker containers with Plex, etc etc Regardless, amazing stuff!
Am I the only one who thinks it’s silly we can backup to other services but we can’t use the UNAS to be the backup for said services? (Would love to have the UNAS hold everything so I can just offload everything and keep using drive as the easy upload access but trying SMB) Thanks for the guide! Very in depth and makes this easy!
Glad/hope it helps bud. Not sure if I will make a 'part 2' until UniFi does more on the software, or if they do further integration into the rest of UniFi, but this video covers everything you will need for your main setup. Have a bloody great week mate
Great video. I already have the UDM-SE, but was looking for a really good NAS that meets my specific requirements. I think that RAID6 suits me best but good to know that the UNAS can use a single disk
Thanks bud. Greatly appreciated. Hope this setup guide helps when your unit arrives. If not, buzz me on email on robbie at nascompares dot com . Cheers
Hey, thanks for the video! I have a question about the backup feature with two NAS setups. If I set one up at home and the other at my business, will I still be able to use the home NAS for personal data while also having it back up the business NAS? Or will the business backup limit my home NAS to only serving that purpose? Thanks!
umh ... on the UDM-PRO, the SFP+ port you showed has number 10 because it's the 10th port, the globe indicates it accepts a WAN (WAN_2) connection like port 9 (WAN_1) port 10 can be switched from WAN to LAN interface
I do not see ability to make groups and assign users to groups. Missing also is subfolder access permissions which allows you to connect to share within windows as an admin and set the file permissions using the groups created within the NAS. I just setup a Buffalo Terastation which allows subfolder permissions, QNAP has Advanced Folder Permissions and I think Synology does it also can use its own UI. TrueNAS too! This is missing in UniFi NAS it seems... please clarify.
is there any info on the storage system they are using? like is it hardware raid, software raid, a type of ZFS, or did they make something from scratch?
You can 100% use it standalone! No need to have a pre existing uniFi setup or switch, can be setup solely on its own. Apologies for not mentioning this in the vid intro
Thank you. Since the UNAS does not have its own usb port: is it possible to shutdown the UNAS via ethernet if the UNAS is directly connected to a battery UPS? Or do I need the Unifi UPS-RSP in addition as a sort of "power supply controller". If so, does the UPS-RSP communicates with a battery UPS?
@RobertoCarlos-tn1iq Thats only because you don't understand that tariffs tend to be used as a negotiation tactic for one thing. For two...even if a tariff does end up in place, the entire point is to help America in the medium term thrive internally with more businesses making the things we need instead of being reliant on Mexico or China. But low information voters are also low information news consumers as well. Maybe you remember that everything was cheaper pre-Biden.
@@TheTastefulThickness Negotiation you say... 🤣 Once a country imposes tariffs it will take decades to rebuild trade trust and get the OTHER SIDE to call-off their counter tariffs... Finally I got an answer, can UNAS run with just one hard drive. YES It can. Thank you.
@@yannick_yt same, it’s asking me for two also.
So currently it works with only disk. But I cant answer if it need two for setup i used 4
@@yannick_yt I had the same warning but as soon as I installed the first drive it was willing to let me proceed with setup.

YES! Just got mine today, i'm waiting for 2 ironwolf pros coming next week. This video will keep me going til can set it up
Oh no i just realised my first mistake! Ordering 4tb drives to get me going!!

@@nascompares Yeah its great! Roll on new features and part 2. Missed the seagulls in this video 🥹
Me too!

Awesome video. Many thanks for this as I'm just waiting for the UNAS to come back into stock before I buy one.
perfect timing, thats my job tonight! :-D Thanks for the great content!
These videos are great. I used your affiliate link to buy a UNAS Pro, so much sure UI gives you a commission!
Thanks bud. Greatly appreciated. Hope this setup guide helps when your unit arrives. If not, buzz me on email on robbie at nascompares dot com . Cheers
Brill! Pity my NAS just keeps going as this would be great if it had 2 storage pools and was 4 bay. A migration assistant would be nice too
Don't use "SFP" (100 Mbit/s) cables with this NAS.
Only use "SFP+" (10 Gbit/s) cables.
😉
True, I took that for granted that people would know. But yeah, what he said!!!!! Cheers

If you start with 3 drives in Raid 5 can you add additional drives to expand the capacity without starting over?
umh ... on the UDM-PRO, the SFP+ port you showed has number 10 because it's the 10th port, the globe indicates it accepts a WAN (WAN_2) connection like port 9 (WAN_1)
port 10 can be switched from WAN to LAN interface
Have you been able to discover if the 8GB of RAM are ECC?
No mixed drives is a disaster. Wish this was made possible so I can add extra large disks later on. Currently have 2x 4TB.
Because it’s using standard raid
I assume you can connect the Apple TV through SMB and use the UNAS as media streamer?
I would be interested as well.

can someone explain to me what is "failover"?

Nothing yet I'm afraid. Just haven't had the chance to dig into it yet. Sorry man
Is it possible to use as standalone, like other brand Nas or I do need to have a cloud key or gateway as well?
You can 100% use it standalone! No need to have a pre existing uniFi setup or switch, can be setup solely on its own. Apologies for not mentioning this in the vid intro
@@nascomparesThanks for clarifying it!
wish i could actually buy one lol
Is there a way to access the SMB from external networks IE over internet? Not looking to VPN if possible.
Port forwarding
Waiting for Raid 6 and more then one storage pool.
Is it only me and my users who can’t use identity endpoint to download files, videos and pictures from the app? Everything works perfectly except that

You can SSH into the UNAS to issue a shutdown command, you just need some kind of computer with a script to automatically do the shutdown.
Now I can afford a cheeky ol' NAS in the Trump economy lets gooooooo
too bad you won't be able to afford hard drives with the crushing tariffs. you can't win with that guy.
