Lyrics: When that fat old sun in the sky is falling Summer evening birds are calling Summer Sunday and a year The sound of music in my ears Distant bells, new mown grass smells so sweet By the river holding hands Roll me up and lay me down And if you see, don't make a sound Pick your feet up off the ground And if you hear as the warm night falls The silver sound from a tongue so strange Sing to me, sing to me When that fat old sun in the sky is falling Summer evening birds are calling Children's laughter in my ears The last sunlight disappears And if you see, don't make a sound Pick your feet up off the ground And if you hear as the warm night falls The silver sound from a tongue so strange Sing to me, sing to me
I've always thought that the members of Pink Floyd must have experienced something absolutely magical in the nights of their youths to have inspired a song as beautiful as this. Thank you Pink Floyd for bringing so much light, wonder and beauty into so many people's minds and hearts.
I grew up with this in my ears, the cow make smile to my sons now. They dance when guitars broke the air and I say the circle has been complete.❤(from Jujuy,Argentina)
I'm always amazed when members of pink Floyd talk about this album, they seem slightly ashamed of it. It's my favourite Floyd album, I play it more than anything other album, it's beautiful.
In his book Nick Mason describes the recording process of the title track as pretty fraught -- they employed a classical orchestra, who were apparently very snobbish and hard to work with, and made the Floyd members feel pretty inferior musically. I've often thought that may have coloured the band members' feeling for the album.
This is a great song for sure. Musicians can certainly be their own worst critics at times. Reminds me how Rush felt about their 3rd album Caress Of Steel.
@@trevertravis8963 Of course! 🙂I read somewhere that Gilmour performed Atom Heart Mother live recently, so perhaps he's come around a bit on it. Hope so.
I absolutely love what David did with the drums on this song. I can't say exactly why. They're seemingly.....slightly disjointed? So much character. The bass is also great, which David also played on this track, I believe.
I don't think this band has bad songs! I have been listening to them for many years and always with great pleasure, their songs do not bother me!!❤️👍👍🎶🎵
I agree with the wonderful comments about the beauty and elegance of this underrated song (and their abilities and insight at such a young age). I was fortunate enough to catch David Gilmour at one of his recent Madison Square Garden performances (Nov 5, 24- yes, election night in the US) and he dusted off this gem and proceeded to blow the lid off the Garden. While his MSG run setlist was superb (he did much from Luck and Strange too, of course), had a killer band and his amazing daughter Romany, this piece was the highlight of the night for me. I rose 10 feet off the ground. Genius doesn't even come close to describing his take on this piece all these years later. It is no secret that David always plays from the heart, and this was certainly proof, but he also brought abundant humanity and profound wisdom to it. I have ineffable joy and honest gratitude for this experience which transported me -- if but for a few hours -- from the circus of the election. Some folks think Steve Jobs saved the world. I think he made it worse in so many ways. It is my strong belief that Leo Fender actually presented the world a much better gift by creating tools for the likes of David Gilmour to inspire and elevate us all. Where would we be now if Leo had decided to create photocopiers instead?
This is my absolute favorite Pink Floyd piece, both lyrically and melodically; so that naturally puts it up there with the greatest of all-time. IMHO. ❤️❤️❤️
I Saw David Play this song Live in Chicago on his Last North American visit on The Rattle That Lock Tour, even better? I saw it with My Son I Named David > " "
Fat old sun was written in 1968 the album is Atom Heart Mother. It is not a new song it is one of their old amazing songs. How old are you young person who really doesn't know Pink Floyd at all. It angers me when young people today comment on Pink Floyd they know nothing about this band
its really amazing the fact that a single band made all this fantastic album... since The piper to Division bell....yes maybe someone its not brilliant like others one, but all are amazing.
Just for the record, (no pun intended) you may want to change the visuals for this, as the photo says "Summer "68"and this video is playing "Fat Old Sun" here. Just saying. I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan. Glad I got to be alive and growing up listening to this music at the same time as these guys were putting it out. For the record... this is actually "Summer '68: ua-cam.com/video/Ou4u4kOatck/v-deo.html&ab_channel=PinkFloyd-Topic
An underappreciated song from an underrated album. This belongs with the greatest hits of Pink Floyd hands down!
Atom heart mother is just amazing💯👏
The band never thought much of this album n couldn't understand how well received it was. But this song and Summer 68 are well worth it.
Berserkkkk
First heard it coming down off shrooms. Perfect! The last positive Floyd album.
It's very "Summer!"
Later it is optimism

This album and especially this song was one of the soundtracks of my youth without a doubt too...love this song.
@@imclumsii3595😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂was about to say that

Best prog/trip group ever💯
I don't care what the band says, this whole album is magical! It's one of their best, if not the best.
Yes!!!!! Many times artists are their own worst critics!
@@tommyrawlings3046i like that. And i agree.
Definitely David’s best song performance. The way he sings the quiet part is absolutely heavenly.

The guitar solo at the end beautiful!
one of his (DG) best
Beautifull song .....!!!
the live version in pompeï is also worth a listen
Shine On Floydians ✨️
DG played it tonight at MSG. Let's just say the solo has matured...and 17,000 people approved.
Fun fact: Gilmour plays bass and drums on this song
Really? White o can check?
Wow, incredible job by him! A one-man band!
Fun fact: it's not true. I swear. Only play lead and slide guitar.
Fun fact:😂and acoustic guitar, dude😂...enjoy your ride🛴
@@ClaudioGabrielSalgado-qt5ee Watch the Rick Beato Interview with David Gilmour. He did played the drums.
This one live at royal albert is amazing. The guitar solo/outro (that lovingly goes on for what feels like an eternity) is simply the best!
Thank you for giving me a new version to look up!

Won't never be another band like these 4 guys. I just discovered this album yesterday and it's as good as anything they ever done

The band says they hate this record, but I love it.

The bells at the end are the same as on the much later album "The Division Bell".
A creative continuity spanning decades.
